A huge 5.4 metres in length and 1.3 metres in depth, the island was reinforced using a solid timber frame to ensure it was safe before it was clad with granite. Larger than life

Extending the house had been stressful, but a stunning glass and granite kitchen brought calm to Debbie Cottons bustling family home
ocation and development potential were what attracted Debbie Cotton and her partner Gordon to their modern, 1980s four-bedroom detached family home in Cheshire. Sadly, the interior of the property left much to be desired. It was so run-down that I wanted to renovate everything in the house immediately, recalls Debbie. The kitchen was very small and cramped and the cupboard doors kept falling off. The couple decided to extend the house to create a fth bedroom and bathrooms for their children, James, 18, Ella, 16, and Annie, 14. Debbie, a business unit controller for a food company, submitted plans for an extension to the rear of the property and after these were accepted, builders began digging the foundations. Once the outside work had been nished, the family moved out intending to return to the completed house a few months later. However, bad weather delayed the project and they were forced to move back into the house with no kitchen, heating or hot water. There were a few difcult weeks but eventually the extension was nished and Debbie turned her attention to the enormous space that had been created. I wanted a large family room, with the kitchen, dining room and lounge as one and a huge breakfast island where we could all gather, she says. On a friends recommendation, the couple contacted Kitchen Kraft in Formby and Debbie, with her strong ideas about design and materials, went to visit their showroom. I knew I wanted burgundy and black glass, so I asked if they could come up with something that incorporated those elements and had a large island too, she says. Graham Grifths, the MD of Kitchen Kraft, made several surveying trips to their home, to liaise with the builders and take exact measurements for the new kitchen to make sure the design worked and more importantly, that it complied with safety regulations. Contemporary and minimal, youd expect this type of kitchen to be more in keeping with a loft-style city bachelor pad, but it is, in fact, a practical family-orientated space that incorporates everything on Debbies wish list. One of my favourite elements of the scheme is all the storage it has so everything is hidden neatly away. Even though we had disruption and chaos for a while, it was truly worth it, smiles Debbie.
Debbie opted for an ultra-contemporary design in her kitchen, choosing sleek glass and granite to further emphasise the minimalist feel. The look is complemented with travertine marble ooring, sourced through Prestige Granite & Marble
Placing an extractor hood in the ceiling would have spoiled the lines of the island, so an AEG-Electrolux downdraft extractor was installed next to the hob. Electronically operated, it is height adjustable and retracts completely into the island
A designated tea and coffee area is hidden away behind a metal roller tambour unit, keeping surfaces clutter-free. The handy drawer underneath houses all the mugs and cups, so making refreshments is quick and easy
My chic kitchen was worth all the disruption and chaos

Everything in Debbies kitchen is conveniently located. The built-in wine cooler is just a few steps from the lounge and its just one small movement from the double ovens to the island or from the prep area to the hobs
With just the push of a button, an Evoline telescopic bank of sockets pops out of the island worktop to create a power source for the unit, keeping them out of view when not in use. Debbie nds the sockets useful for powering small kitchen appliances and the children use them for plugging in their laptops
