Keep Inflation in Mind When Investing
Since the double-digit rates of the early 1980s, inflation has fallen significantly and, for the most part, has stayed low. Still, over time even a mild annual inflation rate can eventually erode your purchasing power. If youre a retiree, or close to retiring, you need to plan for the impact of inflation on your income stream, which may, to a large degree, depend on the types of investments you own. In any case, you can find investments that may be able to help you cope with inflation. When you own stocks, for example, youve got an ownership stake in companies that have the ability to raise prices which make them effective inflation-fighting investments. Keep in mind an investment in stocks fluctuates and you can lose your money. But one of the biggest inflation-fighting benefits of stocks is the dividends that they may pay. Well-run companies may reward investors by paying them back with dividends and some companies have increased their dividends annually for decades. A word of caution, though: Companies can reduce or eliminate them at any time, without notice. Not all stocks pay dividends, of course. In any case, if youre going to maintain a balanced portfolio, youll also want to own other types of investments, such as bonds. But many bonds along with other fixed-income vehicles, such as Certificates of Deposit are not good inflation fighters because the fixed rate of return they offer simply may not keep up with inflation. What about the so-called inflation hedges, such as commodities and real estate? Actually, these hedges are extremely volatile and should be approached with great caution. You need look no further back than the bursting of the housing bubble to see that real estate, for instance, can go down just as fast as it goes up and once down, it can take years to recover. Make sure you choose the investments that both address inflation and can help you make progress toward all your financial goals.

Fortunately, these critical mental skills can be improved through a deliberate regimen of brain training. Similar to how weight training improves muscle strength, brain training uses intense mental exercises to strengthen key skills. The end result is permanent changes in how the brain processes information. And permanent changes to learning ability. Jacks Story

comprehension had gone up an entire grade level. And his mid-year grades were four As and two Bs. Best of all, Jenni says she no longer has a lingering doubt about his future. She knows that Jack is on track for middle school, for high school, and for anything he wants to do.
School had always been a challenge for Jack. His parents could tell that he was making progress each year, but not at the same pace as his classmates. As fifth grade came to an end, they worried about Jack going on to middle school. They considered hiring a tutor to work with him over the summer, but they just werent confident that tutoring would narrow the gap for Jack. Instead, they enrolled him at LearningRx.
Jack gives his brain a workout
If your son or daughters grades arent what you would like, consider a solution this summer that will put them on track for success next fall. Call LearningRx today and find out how brain training can overcome learning issues at the root cause. During the month of June, bring in your childs less-than-stellar report card, and get a cognitive skills assessment for only $49.00 (regularly $199). Si Pendleton and his wife were just finishing supper when the black sedan squeaked to a stop outside of the window. Si stared incredulously, then yanked the napkin out of his collar and hastened to his feet. Looks like the Pendleton House is getting another customer, he said hurriedly. You go right on eating, Stella. Ill take care of him. Grey-haired, spare, and slightly stooped, Si shuffled out to the office. He wore no jacket, and his vest dangled open. He reached the desk just as a stout, ruddy man in tweeds pushed his way through the door. The stranger looked hot and moist. He carried a grip; and as he set it down, he asked: Got a room for the night? Sure have! Si answered heartily. He turned the register. Sign your name right there, if you dont mind. Itll be a dollar a night. The perspiring man inscribed his nameJohn C. Millet. As his glance rose to the entry above his own, he smiled cryptically. Mean to say, he asked, you havent had anybody stop here since August the sixteenth? Thats more than a month. Si Pendleton sighed. Bad days, he admitted. Ever since they built the new State Highway three miles west of here, there aint many cars come through Pineville. Reckon business aint been so bad in the whole ninety years this hotels been standing here.

Ninety years? incredulously. Yep. My grandpa used to run the place. Then my father got it, and now Im the owner. Dont know how long Ill be able to keep things going, though. John C. Millet mumbled something in the way of consolation. He picked up his grip and started toward a door; but his eyes were suddenly held by a framed document on the wall above the desk. It was a letter on yellowed paper. The letter of which hed heard in Philadelphia; which he had traveled eighty miles to see. For an instant he stared at it in simulated surprise. Then he set the grip down again and went closer to the wall. Lincholn Letter, continued on page 20

Gladyce Hughes Reimer (Wayzata class of 1931) handed out certificates to the graduates. The challenges and joys of teaching and learning in a country were remembered by Josephine Kriebs Soderlund (Hackensack Class of 1928), Florence Sutton Roth (Delano Class of 1936), Alice Kuntz Noreen, (MCHS Class of 1936) and Gladyce. It was just a wonderful, wonderful experience, Jo said. Im just very happy that I had that experience. I liked teaching in a rural school, Florence said, because you didnt hear the complaints from the other teachers if your children made too much noise going down the hall. I liked working with country children. They talked about their pets, and they were proud when their mother made them a new dress out of feed sacks. They would talk about butchering that day, and some of the children saw how you did it. It was entirely different than a town school. I liked the way that the older children would help the younger ones, in some schools. It was nice to have a space to go out and play. I liked having some older people to talk to, not just the first graders. I like first graders, but your mind is a little more mature than that, and you like to talk about something else sometimes. It was really hard work, Alice said. I tell you, I never worked so hard in my life. Id come home and study all weekend, what I was going to teach. Then I had to type up my own stuff and put it on that jelly-like thing to make copies for the kids. But I really enjoyed it, and I had nice people to stay with too. Real nice people to work with. I really enjoyed it. Some of the kids were very brilliant, very smart, said Gladyce. It was fun teaching them. You know, little ones would come and sit on your lap. They wouldnt allow that, or have the teacher put their arm about the kids now. Or, if they came up to you to ask a question at your desk, youd put your arm around them. It sure is different now a days. I think we should have a state syllabus again. I think it should be almost nationwide, because children move from New York City to California. There should be some elasticity for what you want to teach, but there should be basics. They should know this, and this, and this. I used that book a lot. I know my 7th and 8th grade teacher used that book a lot. Shed get it out, and wed have to learn this poem and this and this. I think that children in a rural school really learned a lot, Gladyce said, because the little ones would listen to the older ones. By the time they were in 8th grade, they knew a lot of things.

Lincoln Letter, cont. from pg. 12
Narrowing his eyes, he read the framed note: January 2, 1862, Hiram Pendleton, Esq., Pendleton House, Pineville, Pennsylvania. Sir: Let me express again my gratitude for your kindness and care during my stay at the Pendleton House. It is meeting men like you, sir, which lightens the burdens of these unhappy days. I offer you my most sincere thanks. Yours, A. Lincoln. The stout traveler looked in astonishment from the yellowed letter to Si Pendleton. Say, he exclaimed. How did you get this? Si sent bony fingers crawling back through grey hair. It was sent to my father, he explained. Reckon its about the nicest heirloom weve got. I should say it is! Millet agreed. I imagine the thing must be worth something. Si nodded. I been offered as much as fifty dollars for it, he confessed. But shucks, my wife and I wouldnt part with it. Fifty dollars! John C. Millet knew where he could easily get two hundred and fifty for it. Howd your father come to get it? he asked casually. Well Si looked at the frame. Its a story youll never find in history books, Mr. Millet. The way Dad used to tell it, old Abe Lincoln came through this part of the state on his way to Philadelphia. It was winter, and hed caught a mighty bad cold. When he got here he was sniffin and feverish and altogether in a bad way. There were two other men with hima Cabinet member and a doctor and they were scared about the news of this Lincoln sickness getting out. The country was panicky enough in those days. If thered been a rumor that Mr. Lincoln was in danger, it might have cracked the courage of quite a few people. Well, seems like my father played nurse to Mr. Lincoln. Kept him here two days and tended him personally every minute of the time. He never hardly slept. In fact, he waited on Mr. Lincoln until the President was completely over his cold. After the President left about two weeks laterthis letter came. Weve kept it ever since. Lincoln Letter, continued on page 24

John C. Millet drawing a wallet from his pocket. He smiled broadly, encouragingly.
Si Pendleton parted his lips. You mean that, mister? I certainly do! Seventy-five dollars in cash. Si stood dazed. He rubbed his chin, while his startled eyes traveled from Millet to the framed letter and back again. Well, thats a good bit of money, he finally said, hesitating. If youll just wait a minute, Mr. Millet, Ill talk to my wife. After all, seventy-five dollars is something to think about these lean days. I dont mind telling you its more than weve ever been offered before.

A Tale of Two Brothers
by Steve Goodier, http://LifeSupportSystem.com. A story tells of a merchant in a small town who had identical twin sons. The boys worked for their father in the department store he owned and, when he died, they took over the store. Everything went well until the day a dollar bill disappeared. One of the brothers had left the bill on the cash register and walked outside with a customer. When he returned, the money was gone. He asked his brother, Did you see that dollar bill on the cash register? His brother replied that he had not. But the young man kept probing and questioning. He would not let it alone. Dollar bills just dont get up and walk away! Surely you must have seen it! There was subtle accusation in his voice. Tempers began to rise. Resentment set in. Before long, a deep and bitter chasm divided the young men. They refused to speak. They finally decided they could no longer work together and a dividing wall was built down the center of the store. For twenty years hostility and bitterness grew, spreading to their families and to the community. Then one day a man in an automobile licensed in another state stopped in front of the store. He walked in and asked the clerk, How long have you been here? The clerk replied that hed been there all his life. The customer said, I must share something with you. Twenty years ago I was riding the rails and came into this town in a boxcar. I hadnt eaten for three days. I came into this store from the back door and saw a dollar bill on the cash register. I put it in my pocket and walked out. All these years I havent been able to forget that. I know it wasnt much money, but I had to come back and ask your forgiveness. The stranger was amazed to see tears well up in the eyes of this middle-aged man. Would you please go next door and tell that same story to the man in the store? he said. Then the man was even more amazed to see two middleaged men, who looked very much alike, embracing each other and weeping together in the front of the store. After twenty years, the brokenness was mended. The wall of resentment that divided them came down. It is so often the little things - like resentments - that finally divide people. And the solution, of course, is to let them go. There is really nothing particularly profound about it. But for fulfilling and lasting relationships, letting them go

Lot of people, he assured Si, have been selling family treasures this year. Weve come to a time when cash means more than anything else. In the morning, when Millet had departed with the Lincoln letter, old Si Pendleton and his wife climbed wearily to the attic of the dilapidated hotel. There was a battered desk in a corner. From its drawer Si drew a sheet of yellowed paper. He sat down somewhat creakily, dipped a quill pen into an inkwell, and fastened his eyes critically on the framed Lincoln letter that hung directly in front of him. As he leaned forward to write, squinting, he muttered: If it wasnt for this old yellow paper Pa left around and for my practisin all winter to copy Lincolns handwriting, gosh knows what would be happening to us this summer! Probly starve. That makes four weve sold so far, Stella. These city slickers think they make suckers out of us. Yet not one of them noticed that I didnt come right out and say that Lincoln wrote the letter. A fine way to make a living, Stella bristled with selfrighteousness. I never thought Id see the day when you could write anything worth seventy-five dollars!
