1. Do not drop, puncture or disassemble the camera; otherwise the warranty will be voided. 2. Avoid all contact with water and dry hands before using. 3. 2. Loading the battery
Please use two AA batteries.
Slide the battery cover in the direction of the indication to open it.
Follow the indication to load batteries into the battery cover with the correct + and - ends.
Close inward and slide upward the battery cover to lock it.
1. We recommend you to use rechargeable 1.2 V Ni-MH batteries as this will increase time of usage. 2. You can also use 1.5 V alkaline batteries. For details of the battery life, please see the "Battery life" section on page 48.
3. Inserting and removing the CF card
Inserting the card
Open the Card cover.

Insert the card in the direction of the indication and push it in till the end of the card plot.

Close the Card cover.
Removing the card
Press the Eject button to remove the card.
The camera comes with 16MB flash memory built inside for storage. If you do not insert a CF card, the data will be saved in the built-in flash memory automatically.
The LED indicator lights red while the camera is processing data. Never eject the CF card while the camera is processing data.
4. Attaching the strap
For convenience and safety, you may wish to attach the carrying strap.
Thread the strap loop through the hook in the direction indicated.
Fasten the strap as indicated.
5. Using the tripod
Use the tripod to minimize camera movement and ensure optimal image quality, particularly while taking self-portraits, longer movies, video conferencing or in the macro mode.
Attach the tripod to the port on the bottom of the camera and rotate the serrated wheel to lock it.

Unfold the legs to set up. Then adjust the alignment to the desired position.

If the camera is idle for over 60 seconds, the LCD display will be turned off to conserve battery power; press any key to wake up the camera. If you do not operate this camera for over 3 minutes, the camera will shut down automatically.

This camera provides auto focus (AF) function. Please follow these steps to snap stills.

Auto Focus Center the target subject in the LCD display or viewfinder, then press the Shutter button halfway down to start the auto focus.

When pressing the Shutter button halfway down, you will see a yellow target mark (AF frame) flashing in the LCD display and hear two rapid high tones.
The camera provides a macro close-up shooting distance of 8" (20 cm).
If your target subject is not in the center of the image (AF lock)
If your target subject is not in the AF frame, the camera will focus on the background instead of the subject when pressing the Shutter button halfway down. The following steps will teach you how to lock the AF on the original subject and get the best result. Basic Operation
Compose the view that you wish to take.
Center the target subject in the AF frame, then press the Shutter button halfway down.

Keep pressing the Shutter button halfway down and re-compose the view that you originally wanted.
Press the Shutter button all the way down to take the picture.

Viewing movies

While playing a movie on the camera, sound playback is not available. Please copy the movie to your computer (for details, see page 33) to view it with sound playback.
Deleting pictures and movies

Press the Control button to pick the image you wish to delete.

Using the flash strobe
When the lighting is not sufficient for your shooting environment, the flash can provide the extra light you need.

Press the Control button ( ) to switch the flash mode to cycle through four modes - Flash off, Auto, Red-eye reduction, and Flash on on the LCD display. While the flash is being recharged, the icon on the LCD display flashes red and the LED indicator beside the Viewfinder flashes.

The strobe does not fire. The strobe will automatically fire as more light is needed. The strobe and the red-eye reduction flash always fire. The strobe always fires.

Charging the flash strobe requires more battery power. When the battery power is low, the flash strobe On cannot be set. Please change the batteries.
Using the self-timer
The self-timer allows a delay of ten seconds before the shutter fires when taking a self-portrait picture.
Press the Control button ( ) to set the self-timer to On. Then you will see a icon on the LCD display. When the Shutter button is pressed, the camera will have ten seconds delay with the Self-timer lamp flashing and ten beeps emitting before taking a picture. After the shutter fires, the selftimer will be automatically disabled.

Setting the resolution
Changing the resolution affects the number of pictures that can be taken. The higher the resolution is, the more memorydemanding the images will be.

Press the RESOLUTION button to switch the resolution mode to cycle through four choices - 2272x1704, 2048x1536, 1600x1200 and 1024x768 on the LCD display.

The most memory-demanding option. Select the 2272x1704 type when you want to develop 6*8 photos or smaller.
2048X1536
The default setting. Select the 2048x1536 type when you want to develop 5*7 photos or smaller.
1600X1200
Select the 1600x1200 type when you want to develop 3*5 photos or smaller.
1024X768
The most memory-saving option. This selection is suitable for computer screen displays and email.
We recommend you to use 2048X1536 to optimize image quality and memory use. For details, please see the "Storage capacity" section on page 49.
6. Using the QUICK EFFECT button
The QUICK EFFECT button allows you to immediately apply the frequent photo effects - Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Tungsten, Back light and B & W - of this camera, as well as view the real-time change of effects on the LCD display.

Press the QUICK EFFECT button to switch the mode to cycle through seven choices - Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Tungsten, Back light and B & W on the LCD display.

This item determines the best white balance setting automatically for your shooting environment. Suitable for normal outdoor shooting under sunny (bright) weather.
Cloudy
Suitable for cloudy weather or shady (dim) environments.
Fluorescent
Suitable for indoor shooting with fluorescent lamp lighting (high color condition). Suitable for indoor shooting with incandescent lamp lighting (low color condition). Select this item when the subject is lit from behind light.

B&W
Changes the shot to black and white.
7. Using the MENU/OK button
Press the MENU/OK button to enter the MENU. The MENU provides more advanced features for you to fine-tune the camera.

The applicable value ranges from -1.5 to +1.5. A positive value indicates the display will be brighter than usual; while a negative value makes the result dimmer.

Press the Control button to highlight a setting mode that you wish to configure. Then press the MENU/OK button to confirm.
User Setting menu User Setting allows you to set some elemental functions of the camera. The following table is the description of all user setting items.
Language
This item allows you to set the usage of language on the LCD display. For details on setting, see page 18.
Buzzer
This item determines whether the beep sounds when operating the camera.
Flicker
This item allows you to set the flicker to prevent nosie and get the best image. The default flicker value depends on your country. For details, see the "More on flicker" section on page 49.
TV type
This item is related to viewing images by connecting your camera to the television. Set the TV type to prevent television display problems. The default TV type depends on your country. NTSC is for America, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, etc.; PAL is for European countries, China, Hong Kong, etc.
8. Real-time display on TV
Connect your camera and TV via an AV cable for real-time display.
Set the TV type
Rotate the Mode dial to to set the TV type. (Please see the method described on page 30-31 to set the PAL or NTSC type.)
Connect your camera to TV
Turn on your TV and switch to AV mode. Insert the video and audio ends of the AV cable to the AV-in port on your TV. Insert the other end of the AV cable to the TV-out port on your camera.

for real-time display
1. Installing the AF Cam driver
Install the AF Cam driver before connecting your camera to your computer for the first time. Please follow the steps to complete the installation.
Turn on your computer.
Do not connect the USB cable to your computer at this stage. Turn off other applications running on your computer.
Place the supplied CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Move the mouse to the
icon (AF Cam) and click it.
If no title appears on the screen, please follow the steps.
1. Double click the "My computer" icon. 2. Double-click the CD-ROM drive icon (AF Cam (E:)*). The name of CDROM drive changes depending on how your computer is set up.
For Windows XP users: Skip step 1. "Installing the AF Cam driver" and go to step 2. "Connecting your camera to your computer" if you do not use the PC Camera function.
The "Install Shield Wizard" dialogue box is occurring and the automatic installation begins. When a window as Fig 1 appears, click "Next". Then follow the on-screen instructions to continue.
Notice for Windows 2000 users
1. The "Digital Signature Not Found" dialogue box might show twice. Please simply click "Yes". The camera works well for Windows 2000.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions and click "Finish".
Do not restart your computer at this step.
When a window as Fig 2 appears, please click "Yes" or "No" according to your circumstance.
If you are not a Windows XP user, or never install DirectX 8.0 or above, click "Yes". If you are a Windows XP user, or you have already installed DirectX 8.0 or above, click "No".
When a window as Fig 3 or Fig 4 appears, please click "OK" or "Finish" to complete the installation.
The driver will be available after restarting your computer.
2. Connecting your camera to your computer
Set the Mode dial on your camera to OFF ,
Insert the USB cable to the USB port on your computer.
Insert the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on your camera.
3. Copying pictures and movies to your computer
For Windows XP users After connecting your camera with the computer, a window will automatically appear (as Fig 5). Select the "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer" item and then click "OK".
For Windows 2000/ME/98SE users Double-click "My computer", then double-click the new "Removable Disk" icon.
Double-click the "DCIM" file folder.
Double-click the "100MEDIA" file folder.
Drag the picture to the "My Documents" file folder to copy your picture or movie to the computer. For Windows XP users For Windows 2000/ME/98SE users

4. Viewing on your computer

Select the desired file and double-click it to view.
Notice on disconnecting the camera from the computer for Windows 2000/ME users
To disconnect your camera from the computer, please follow these steps. 1. Double-click 2. Click on the task bar.
(USB Disk), then click "Stop".
3. Select the camera (AF Cam) on the confirmation screen and click "OK". 4. Follow the on-screen instruction to disconnect your camera from your computer correctly and safely.
You need to install the AF Cam driver before using PC Camera or video conferencing function. ! !
If you have already installed the AF Cam driver, skip step 1. "Installing the AF Cam driver" and go to step 2. "Connecting your camera to your computer". If you never install the AF Cam driver, please finish the installation first. For details, please see step 1 in the "Enjoying your Images on the computer" chapter on page 33.

When using PC Camera function (or video conferencing) for the first time, please follow the steps below.
For Windows 2000 users
The "Digital Signature Not Found" dialogue box might appear twice, please simply click "Yes". This camera works well for Windows 2000.
For Windows ME users
Please select "Automatic search for a better driver" when a window as Fig 7 appears.
For Windows 98SE users
Click "Next" when a window as Fig 8 appears. Select "Search for a best driver for your device" and click "Next" when a window as Fig 9 appears. Select the position where your Windows 98SE CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
3. Capturing immediate images to your computer
After the installation of driver and hardware, you can start to use the PC Camera function or run other video conferencing applications. (This manual provides information related to PC Camera function only.) Double-click the icon on the desktop to execute the program, then you can begin to capture immediate images on your computer.
Click the "Start" menu and go up to "Programs", then go to the folder named "AF Cam" and click it.
Open the NetMeeting interface or other video conferencing application and then start to use it.
Press the icon at the bottom on the PC Camera panel to use the functions.

Click the (Open Album) icon at the bottom on the PC Camera panel, or go to the follow path to find the files. C:\Program Files\AF Cam\Work Temp
4. Advanced settings
Click the (Format) and (Setting) icons on the PC Camera panel to bring up advanced settings.
Format settings
Color Space/Compression Set one of the following functions according to your needs. RGB 24: Better image quality. I420: The file will be compressed to add advantage for faster-speed transformation.
Output Size Set output size to change the size of the preview window. The default size is 320x240. Select larger pixels when you need a larger preview window.
Properties settings
Video Setting
Banding Filter If the screen of your computer flickers when using PC Camera function, change the "Banding Filter" item on the "Video Setting" tab to avoid noise. Select "50Hz" or "60Hz" until the screen stops flickering. If you want to restore the default setting, select "Normal AE".
Bandwidth If the controller has no enough bandwidth available for the camera, set the "Bandwidth" item on the "Video Setting" tab. The smaller the bandwidth value is, the less the bandwidth is occupied. Then it will take more time to transmit images.
Custom Setting You can use the default settings or change the settings of brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and hue on your own.
Troubleshooting
Question
When using the camera
The camera has no power. The batteries may be out of power, please change the batteries.
Answer
Cannot power on my camera even though batteries are installed.
Make sure that the batteries are installed correctly. If it is idle over 3 minutes, the camera will shut down automatically, please rotate the Mode dial to OFF, then rotate it to to switch on.
Cannot take pictures and movies when pressing the Shutter button.
The storage is full. Please free some space of the CF card or flash memory. Check if the camera is under the status of charging batteries. Check if the CF card is set to "protected". If the "MEMORY ERROR" message shows on the LCD display, please set the Mode dial to mode format the card.
I did not delete the picture and movie, but cannot find the data in the CF card.
Check if your files are stored in the camera's built-in memory. If there is a icon at the right bottom section on the LCD display, it means you are using the camera with a CF card. Please remove the card to find the data in the flash memory. (For details, see the "Removing the card" section on page 6)
Cannot set the strobe to the "On" mode.
Charging the flash strobe requires more power of batteries. When the battery is under the status of low power, the strobe On cannot be set. Please change the batteries.
The image is too blurred.
Keep the camera steady with pressing the Shutter button while taking pictures.
The image is too dark.
You may need to take pictures or movies in the place with adequate light or use the flash strobe. This situation is normal. If you want the movie with sound playback, please copy the movie to your computer and view it on the computer. Set the filter matching the place you are staying. Please refer to the "More on flicker" section on page 49. Troubleshooting
Sound playback is not available when viewing the movie on the LCD display.
Noise occurs on my camera when viewing the image on the LCD display or on the computer.
When connecting the camera to your computer
The driver installation failed. Please remove the driver and other related programs. Follow the installation steps in this manual to reinstall. Install the driver before inserting the USB cable. A conflict with other installed camera or capture device. If you have any other camera or capture device, completely remove the camera and its driver from the computer to avoid a driver conflict.
The movie cannot be played on my computer.
Please install DirectX 8.0 or above. (See the "Installing the AF Cam driver" section on page 33 or download DirectX 8.0 and get more information on Microsoft website.)
Noise occurs on my computer when using video conferencing.
Set the filter matching the place you are staying. Please refer to the "Banding Filter" section on page 45.
