Berlaymont-building

AKG improves EU communication
EU Parliament and other facilities use thousands of AKG headphones
Directives are not the only things that come from the EUs capital, Brussels. Orders come in from there, too. Approximately 90 % of all EU buildings in Brussels are equipped with AKG headphones. Another facility using AKG products is the Berlaymont, the new domicile of the EU Commission.
Two thousand pairs of K 10 headphones were purchased for the Commissions new official seat. Most of these timelessly elegant, featherweight phones are assigned to the interpretation systems. In the past, the EU had already chosen the comfortable K10 time and again because they provide excellent intelligibility, meet hygienic standards, are easy to clean, and come with washable ear pads. The remodeling of the 24,000-m2 Berlaymont building with offices for more than 2700 EU Commission officials took thirteen years, and the facility is due to be opened in November 2004. At present, the members of the EU Commission still use more than sixty different buildings in the so-called European Quarter of Brussels. Reconstruction became inevitable in 1991 when the old building turned out to contain unacceptably high amounts of asbestos. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 further delayed completion as increased security measures were adopted. The new building cost EUR 1.5 billion and with its star-shaped architecture is quite likely to become a new landmark of Brussels.

Elegance Meets Sound

AKG K 206 AFC provides deluxe features at a compact price.
A new, breathtakingly styled price/ performance miracle with superior sound from AKG makes it easier to find your favorite headphones. The K 206 AFC is packed with exciting features including beauty and comfort. It is vastly superior to anything youd expect to get at this price.

Technology

AKG once again lives up to the expectations of its regular listeners and fans. The K 206 AFC delivers a full, rich sound with velvety bass, clean mids, and an airy high end a mature sound that is much better than youd expect of analog wireless headphones. A PLL synthesized tuner ensures higher radio performance, even through walls and ceilings. An integrated autotuning function provides optimum reception at the push of a button. In addition, the K 206 AFC combines environmental friendliness with comfort. The supplied NiMH battery packs will power the headphones for 15 hours before you need to charge them, which is as easy as placing the headphones on the chic transmitter/charger. The battery packs live longer than comparable rechargeable batteries, are more efficient, and have no memory effect, so their environmental impact is very low. The headphones are a circumaural, semiopen design. Gimbal-suspended ear cups and a self-adjusting headband ensure perfect fit. The pleasantly soft ear pads made of skincompatible, breathing velour are of course washable and replaceable. The thin, elegant transmitter doubles as a charger and storage cradle for the headphones and blends in easily with any style of interior decoration. It goes without saying that the transmitter will cover several headphones simultaneously. The headphones are attractively styled, with gentle curves, and made of materials that are pleasant to the touch. The elegant on/off switch is flush-mounted whereas the autotuning button is slightly recessed to prevent unintentional actuation. A knurled knob allows the user to set the volume continuously. The fashionable unisex styling of the K 206 AFC catches the eyes of both female and male music lovers of any age group. And the price of this exceptional headphone system is surprisingly attractive, too!

Summary

The K 206 AFC is the ideal gift for people who already have everything or really want to have everything.

Esthetics

The K 206 AFC is simply BEAUTIFUL! It adds another showpiece to AKGs already world-famous collection of product designs. It is a designers masterpiece, whose proportions, curves, grooves, colors, and surface finish have been worked out with great care and love of detail by Michael Schaefer (www.schaefer-design.at). The surface is finished in special satin titanium enamel. The beauty of this type of enamel is that fingerprints will not stick to it, so the K 206 AFC will keep its pristine appearance no matter how many hands may grab at it. AKGReport | 67/ 102004

MicroPen MP 40 and Miniature Receiver PR 40
Claus Plaass, free journalist, specialized in non-fiction early on: reporting, documentaries, features, interviews, small concerts, travel reports.
This means a lot of traveling, working in tight quarters, no way to plan ahead, hardly any stands, chargers, lighting available. Since the stations industry-standard, professional equipment is too heavy, large, complex, and delicate for this kind of use, I purchased my own equipment in 2003, shopping for light weight, small size, multifunctionality, and ease of use: Sony DSR 170 P DVCAM format video camera AKG MP 40 wireless microphone and PR 40 receiver Home made rain cover, lamps, stand, bags While the video camera is a reference model in its class, I chose the AKG devices because the PR 40 receiver fits below the camera handle where it is protected from damage; the antennas do not protrude above the camera outline; the MP 40 microphone contains a lavalier mic and transmitter; a clip enables the mic to be fixed on clothes or in a pocket; the available ISM frequencies are legal here; the AKG equipment was the least costly. The last technical questions having been sorted out quickly on the telephone with Mr. Dderlein of AKG Munich, I ordered the MP and PR from Music-Town Neubrandenburg. The thick XLR connector is soldered to the thin receiver cable. The PR 40 Velcro-mounts elegantly between the lens and handle. The tiny slide switches are less than ideal for thick fingers. The clip on the lavalier mic should be handled carefully. GPS tests showed the range of the setup to be 50 m (2 m). Within this range, the small C 417 gives a clean and full sound. Unfortunately, green 1.2 V/ 750 mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries only provide half the life AKG states for 1.5 V batteries. The one hour of juice left warning lamp is very helpful. The receiver keeps a low profile and adds virtually no weight to the camera. Several shootings under the above conditions, e.g., at a rock concert, on a fast motorboat, or at the World Bodypainting Festival in Seeboden in the Austrian Province of Carinthia proved my decision to buy the AKG equipment right. The size of a marker pen, the mic may sit in a vest pocket and clamp, say, on a body painters shirt five seconds later, exactly where the sound comes from, with no need to fuss with cables, explain, touch, use a fishpole, or interfere. Once the camera runs, the picture and sound will be perfect. In order to use the small MP 40 on a table or stage, too, I built a light, compact stand. It consists of a swiveling suspension for the MP, 14 cm in height and expandable in 40-cm increments to 160 cm (or more). All tubes easily plug together and are made of unpainted brushed aluminum. The base is made of 6-mm steel enameled in matte black. The two MP 40s and PR 40s fit into a 44-cm diagonal AKG microphone case. Although a fishpole, sound engineer, mixers, etc. may give better results, they are impossible to bring in, or even irritating, in some shooting situations. I feel that less than optimal but finished footage is better than no footage at all because the equipment was too heavy, slow, high-profile, and awkward. Except for some minor details that may be improved yet, the AKG Microtools MP 40 and PR 40 are still the best choice for me. Another MP 40 + PR 40 rig is in use by now. Claus-Christian Plaass

My short-form CV (Plaass about Plaass)
I was born in Kiel, Germany, on the Baltic coast, on March 20, 1962. My parents and teachers fostered my creativity early on. Never say I cant! Do it right. Help yourself for nobody else will! My fathers admonitions had their effect on me from my earliest days. I became familiar with Lego, Fischertechnik, bicycle, furniture, moped; wood, metal, plastic, textiles, and electricity. I got my first camera at age eight and an SLR for my confirmation along with a Framus twelvestring guitar. After graduating from high school, I became a fitters apprentice, an intern on a Shell tanker, and studied naval propulsion and control technology and foreign trade. I worked in shipping management and industry, mostly at engineering/marketing interfaces. From 1997, I have worked as a freelance journalist and correspondent for international technical magazines (multihulls, composite technology). I did freelance work for a citizens radio station called Offener Kanal Kiel, where I was trained in TV/radio editing and technology.

GN 30/50 Minijack Set

With the help of the GN 30/50 Minijack Set it is now possible to enable a fixed installed wiring in a meeting or board room and still being able to disassemble the microphones fast and easily.
This becomes possible due to an adaptor mounted into a table surface. The wiring is fix installed underneath the table. On the upper side a threat (known from the AKG Conference systems) holds the gooseneck module safe and firm. If no microphone is needed a discreet plastic cap is hiding and protecting the hole and the contacts. An installer easily can feed the large LED ring externally to show the user, that his microphone is activated. The easiest source for that is to use the logic output of an automixer (e.g. AS16x12). The GN30/ 50 Minijack-Set consists of: GN 30 or 50 CS gooseneck module HCS tabletop adaptor DPA phantom power adaptor with app. 30cm cable, soldered Mounting bracket for DPA + screw

Big Brothers Watching Bangkok
UBC Bangkok produced a casting show for its Academy Fantasia reality/ talent search program. Twelve young actors shared an apartment for two months and all their activities were recorded around the clock. A WMS 4000 multichannel system with C 417 L lavalier microphones and PT 4000 bodypack transmitters was used for the production. The sound engineers were full of praise for the system. Thanks to its excellent multichannel capability, fail-safe operation, and ease of setup, the WMS 4000 turned out to be the ideal choice for the extreme stress expected during the shooting. The MCS 4000 software running on a central control computer proved extremely helpful, too. The high transmission and reception quality of the system allowed the antennas to be hidden in the talents' clothes. The miniature transmitters and C 417 L lavalier microphones provided maximum intelligibility with no loss of comfort for the users and were hardly visible for the audience.

and is run by high school students. It offers MP3 streaming and audio on demand. Twelve students from Lower Austria and Vienna were first trained in speaking, interviewing, audio basics, reporting, and creative writing for radio broadcasting. Quality was extremely important, and such AKG industry standard broadcast microphones as the C 2000, C 4000, and C 414 deliver just that. The C 1000 ensures high audio quality in interview and ambience recording on location. As more and more Internet users have wideband connections, Internet radio is no longer an illusion. We aim at linking www.schulradio.at to highly frequented radio listings such as those included in Media Player, adds Hrastnik.
A first step in the right direction has been taken already. www.schulradio.at uses a database and streaming technology developed by Team Teichberg, promoted by the European Union, and successfully used by Internet radio stations in four countries. Austrian stations using this technology include sterreich 1, literadio Live Radio from the Frankfurt book fair, Radio Orange, and Radiobande. As the studio at the headquarters of the Volkswirtschaftliche Gesellschaft Wien/ N will be opened next semester, www.schulradio.at will make the transition from the first test run to regular operation with word programs about economics and society produced by high school students for the Internet community.

MADE IN ENGLAND:

Julian Lloydxxx Webber
Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation, Julian Lloyd Webber has collaborated with an extraordinary array of musicians from Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel, Neville Marriner and Georg Solti to Stephane Grappelli, Elton John and Cleo Laine.
Julians twenty-year partnership with Philips/ Universal Classics has produced many outstanding recordings including his BritAward winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine) the Dvorak Concerto with Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic, Tchaikovskys Rococo Variations with the London Symphony under Maxim Shostakovich and a coupling of Brittens Cello Symphony and Waltons Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was described by Gramophone magazine as beyond any rival. Julian has also recorded several highly successful CDs of short pieces for Universal Classics including Made In England, Cello Moods, and Cradle Song: It would be difficult to find better performances of this kind of repertoire anywhere on records of today or yesterday Gramophone. Julian has given more than fifty works their premiere recordings and has inspired new

compositions for cello from composers as diverse as Malcolm Arnold and Joaquin Rodrigo to James MacMillan and Philip Glass. Recent concert performances have included three further works composed for Julian Michael Nymans Double Concerto for Cello and Saxophone on BBC Television, Gavin Bryars Concerto in Suntory Hall, Tokyo and Philip Glasss Concerto at the Beijing International Festival. Julians recording of the Glass concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic conducted by Gerard Schwarz will be released on the Orange Mountain label in September 2004. Delays for AKG

The highly credible contemporary darlings of UK indie are appearing at major festivals throughout the summer and are currently in the US on a showcase tour promoting their acclaimed debut album Faded Seaside Glamour.
The AKG deal was put together by Andy Duffield, and at the moment includes 3 sets of AKG C 5900 condenser vocal mics. It started with Harman supplying one microphone for lead singer Greg Gilbert. This was such a great success that they came back to Harman wanting additional C 5900s for the backing vocals of Aaron Gilbert (keyboards) and Colin Fox (bass). Harman are also looking into supplying C 414s for the kit. The high SPL C 5900 was chosen for its amazing sonic quality and virtual indestructibility! An Acoustic selection switch enables the user to fine tweak for their specific acoustic needs, and the C 5900 provides excellent pitch, high resolution and supreme fidelity with a supercardioid polar pattern. These and other features introduce a whole new level of sound clarity, whilst maintaining the mics incredible feedback rejection facilities. It is an ideal mic choice for a sharp, kick ass band like The Delays. Their sound features an elegant, dynamic and very powerful vocal cocktail of raw-edged sexiness, and AKG is the perfect medium to bring out the intense extremes of Gregs vocal from visceral falsettos to a dark grungy growl. Harman Pros Andy Duffield says, The Delays are one of the UKs most exciting up-andcoming bands, I think they have a great future, and its great to be associated with them.

Julian lLloyd Webbers new band project !Bossa Nova! selected AKG microphones for some tracks on his new album. Julian Lloyd Webber selected a C 414 B-ULS on his cello and a C 900 for voice. Tickling Seven Senses

Peter Wolfs Sense-ation Symphony In Seven Senses at the 2004 Ars Electronica
Although it is a fact, we are hardly aware that besides the familiar five senses hearing, vision, touch, smell, taste we humans also have intuition and imagination.
These two hidden senses were only discovered and showcased, though, by Peter Wolf who depicted them musically in a truly sensational symphony entitled Sense-ation. 110,000 spectators watched and listened to this years Klangwolke (Cloud of Sound) on the banks of the Danube in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, on a late summer night in early September. Unless a soccer game between Austria and England had been broadcast on TV at the same time, the relatively narrow area around the Brucknerhaus concert hall might have become dangerously overcrowded. Almost all members of the Wolf family lent a hand in the performance on September 4, 2004. Peter Wolf conducted the orchestra, his wife Michelle who had co-written Sense-ation appeared as vocalist, his son Alexander on keyboard, his daughter Angelina, a young actress, spoke the linking texts, and to be precise, the youngest baby Wolf was involved too, although he or she will not be born before late March 2005. The Bruckner Orchestra played in the Brucknerhaus hall while the band with Michelle Wolf, Johnny Sutherland, Jeff Beale, Vinnie Colaiuta, Brad Warnaar, and Alexander Wolf played on the riverbank. Peter Wolf conducted both groups from a boat anchoring in front of the Brucknerhaus using a video link to video walls set up in the concert hall and on the lawn outside. Just imagine a relatively mild late summer night on the banks of the Danube in Linz. As the orchestra plays the first bars of the symphony a boat passes the crowd, drops anchor,
Dummy Head (composer Anton Bruckner) with built-in AKG microphones
Ars Electronica reminiscences
the conductor appears on the bridge, hundreds of spotlights come on, creating a pool of light around the conductor. As overwhelming as the visual effect, the music by Peter Wolf actually awakened the audiences seven senses. Peter Wolf is a world-famous composer, musician, and producer who worked with such great artists as Frank Zappa, Jefferson Starship, Chicago, Santana, Natalie Cole, and many others. He wrote the music for a number of successful films including Pretty Woman, Top Gun, Weekend At Bernies and is currently working on the scores for another two Hollywood productions. In his latest work, he once again merged elements of jazz, classical music, and pop to create a perfect, uniquely personal musical statement. While conducting Sense-ation, Peter Wolf even charmed the audience by picking up an accordion to add a folk-pop touch to the music in just the right places. The Symphony In Seven Senses was congenially visualized by Christian Weikirchner who already had designed the laser effects, lighting, and fireworks to support the music of previous Klangwolke concerts. Chords turned into long bundles of laser beams cutting through the night sky, every bar became an arc of light, and the drum beats in the finale set off breathtaking fireworks that illuminated the city for seconds as brightly as daylight. I take the audience along on a sensual voyage of discovery, says Peter Wolf. Sense-ation is the second symphony he composed for the Klangwolke concert series. Obviously, the audience understands the language of music better than many a critic does. If you werent at the concert you did miss out on a great experience, but you can (and should!) make up for that by buying the CD Sense-ation (Universal) that is available already. Has it really been 25 years? The Ars Electronica developed from a combination of festival and workshops of rather local significance to an internationally representative mega event attended by the greatest celebrities from the worlds of music and film. Hollywood meets Linz, and the great animation artists regularly bear away the coveted Prix Ars Electronica. AKG already contributed to the first Ars Electronica in 1979 by providing microphones, headphones, and digital delays (AKG TDU 7000s) for the event. The then CEO of AKG publicly shook hands with the first Ars Electronica sensation, the Spa 12 robot. In 1980, AKG was represented on the jury for the Prix Ars Electronica, and in 1981 contributed the Bruckner dummy head, a cast of a bust of Anton Bruckner that was used as a dummy head with builtin AKG microphones. Placed next to the conductor, the dummy head picked up the sound of the orchestra playing a symphony for transmission to a number of AKG headphones in the foyer. Over the years, we collected many pleasant memories of exciting events at the Ars Electonica. Happy birthday, Ars Electronica, and keep up the good work!

Although classical music and jazz are known to be close relatives, only a handful of exceptional musicians have achieved blends of the two genres that equally satisfy the lovers of either style. Peter Herbert has been doing that successfully for two decades. Jazz is a mixed genre that comprises many languages. Improvisation was practiced in baroque music, basso continuo playing is an element of both baroque music and jazz, and the harmonic structures are similar. Since 1987, Peter Herbert has been a top star on the sophisticated New York jazz scene. New York is a friendly city. You are integrated as part of the whole right away. Born in the Austrian Province of Vorarlberg, Peter Herbert has become a Francophile Austro-American. He flies more than 100,000 miles every year commuting between his main domiciles in Paris and New York and various venues. Playing much more than one hundred concerts per year and working on numerous other projects, he is one of the most-booked musicians on the scene. After living in the US for sixteen years, he made Europe his home again. Why Paris? Where should a cosmopolitan go when coming back? Paris lives, it is an active, pulsating city. The people in France are open-minded, critical, curious They are nobodys fool. Paris is a pleasant and inspiring place. I like the cultural standard and quality of life here, and of course the thriving jazz scene.

Neuer Saal

Renewed Splendor and Advanced Technology

Vienna Konzerthaus

Along with the State Opera and Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus is one of the three famous institutions that established Viennas worldwide reputation as a leading metropolis of music. Every season, about 600,000 persons visit approximately 750 events including a wide range of concerts (classical music, early music, new music, jazz, world music, folk music, rock, and pop), movie screenings, revues, and readings as well as product presentations, receptions, balls, etc. The Konzerthaus was opened in 1913 and today more than ever before, it sets new directions both in music and society. One reason for the success of the Vienna Konzerthaus is certainly, as most people agree, the perfect renovation of the building from 1998 to 2001. The most important goals were to restore the splendid original appearance on the one hand, and to update the audience facilities and technical infrastructure to meet the requirements of an event center of the 21st century on the other. The Konzerthaus building houses a total of 600 rooms including one restaurant and seven performance halls differing widely in size, furniture, and acoustics to provide ideal settings for all genres. Each hall is connected to a recording studio and control room.

plains Heinz Repper. The Groer Saal is now doubtless among the ten concert halls with the best acoustics in the world.

Mozart-Saal

This fascinating hall looks light and modern and has been the venue of many performances by international top stars. With its unique acoustics, the Mozart-Saal impresses every visitor and most sound engineers prefer this hall to all others for making recordings. Many jazz groups, chamber orchestras, small ensembles, and soloists performed here. The 330-m2 audience area seats 704, while the stage area is 65 m2 and can be extended to 105 m2.

The 7 Halls

Heinz Repper, Technical Director of the Vienna Konzerthaus, oversaw and coordinated the entire four-year rebuilding effort. He gave us a tour of the completely remodeled building with a total of six hundred rooms of widely differing sizes for a wide variety of uses. The redesigned entrance hall already gives you an idea of the range of cultural events taking place at the Konzerthaus. From the entrance hall, staircases lead to seven different halls, each providing a perfect setting (size, furniture, acoustics) for a specific style of music. The center and showpiece of the building is the Groer Saal with 1865 seats, an audience area of 750 m2, and a 170-m2 stage. This hall is perfectly suited for performances by symphony orchestras, big bands, etc. As a Konzerthaus flyer aptly put it, artists, audience, and the hall merge into a perfect triad. The hall impresses the listener with its elegance and harmonious forms and colors. This large hall with its classic, harmonious proportions has seen performances by countless world famous orchestras, soloists, and legends from the worlds of classical music and jazz. During the renovation, we made a number of small, clever changes to the hall and stage in order to further optimize the acoustics, ex-

Schubert-Saal

A sophisticated music salon, this 240-m2 hall seats 366 in front of a 50-m2 stage. As part of the general renovation, a series of formerly walledup windows were uncovered to liven up the atmosphere of the hall. The Schubert-Saal is used for chamber music as well as receptions and lectures. One specialty is a series of lunchtime concerts by young musicians, many of whom started their careers there.
In order to provide an even better forum for the musical trends of today, a new concert hall was created in the basement of the Konzerthaus. The Neuer Saal combines modern architecture and an intimate atmosphere, seating 400 on a total floor area of 340 m2. Movable platforms allow the stage and audience areas to be easily adapted to every type of event. AKGReport | 67/ 102004

The flexible platform system along with advanced audio and lighting equipment enable the Neuer Saal to meet the challenges of todays music scene with ease. However, the Neuer Saal has not only become a new home for international contemporary music. Thanks to its nearly unlimited flexibility, it is also an excellent venue for workshops, concerts for children, recording sessions and rehearsals, artistic experiments and social functions. Three other halls are available for smaller events: The Schnberg-Saal seats 99 in a 112-m2 audience area. The Alban-Berg-Saal is about the same size and also designed for 99 listeners. The last of the seven halls is the WotrubaSalon with its 135-m2 audience area, which is also ideal for receptions and workshops. Sound systems Each of the seven halls is connected to a recording studio and control room. Equipment A wide range of AKG studio and performance microphones make sure each of the many different concerts passes off without a glitch, provide excellent studio or live recordings, and ensure great live sound. In addition to the equipment that had been in use at the Konzerthaus for years including AKG condenser and dynamic microphones (C 414 B, AKG Blue Line Series, C 480 B, etc.), AKG Acoustics supplied top-of-the-line WMS Series equipment plus a number of microphones and headphones: AKGReport | 67/ 102004

Konzerthaus sound engineers use C 414 BTLIIs, C 2000Bs, C 3000 Bs, SolidTubes, C 426 combs, C 547 BLs, C 477 WR/L-p head-worn microphones, a selection of Emotion/TriPower Series and MicroMic Series microphones, 14 x AKG Blue Line Series, 24 x C 480s. Six channels of WMS 4000 were added to the six-channel WMS 81 system that had been installed prior to the rebuilding. The WMS systems were configured for mobile use as specified by project manager Heinz Repper in order to make sure the wireless systems can be set up quickly and easily in each of the different halls. During the reconstruction, antennas and antenna cables were installed permanently and invisibly for the audiences in every hall. EXPERIMENTING WITH MICROPHONES
Recording projects by students from Graz
Constantin Co Lugers Luger Music Studios in Lower Austria were filled by solid rock sounds for a week. An interesting group of musician/ sound engineers experimented with music and recording equipment to find exciting sounds and accurately capture them on tape. The lineup comprised Roland Rath on synthesizer and organ, Markus Meister on drums, Wolfgang Nemitz on trombone, and Co Luger on guitar and bass. Each participant in the project had to play his instrument, tweak the controls on the mixer, and help set up the microphones. The diversified microphone line from AKG offered no end of possibilities for experimenting. Two C 414 B-ULSs for overhead miking, a C 4000 B inside the kick drum, a C 451 on the hi-hat, a D 19 C (!) on the snare drum, and a C 522 MS for ambience pickup provided a very powerful yet open sounding studio setup. The versatile SolidTube was used on the guitar amp and trombone. An additional D 3400 on the trombone added a nuance of presence to the warm tube sound of the SolidTube. The C 522 MS was used for ambience miking for all instruments. The bass and keyboards were connected directly to the large analog console. Headphones used on the project included K 271 Studio, K 141 M, K 44, and K 500. A classic song. The title to be produced was chosen to allow a wide range of possible instrument sounds and a maximum of improvisation possibilities. On Peter Gunn, the band combined a low-down, rolling bass line with a powerful drum sound, up-front, jazzy organ solos, and a funk-heavy guitar solo. The sensitive, multi-voiced interpretation of the theme played on the trombone intensified the jazz-rock mood of the song. All participants agreed to keep the project alive as a one-week workshop every six months. New musicians from the Graz sound engineers scene will join the group to widen the choice of songs and diversity of lineups.
