OmniStack 6300 Series

The Industrys Best Value Gigabit Ethernet Switch
OmniStack 6300 series switches are cost-efficient, fixed configuration standalone Gigabit Ethernet switches that provide wire-rate layer 2 forwarding with intelligent layer 3 and layer 4 services to the desktop. They increase network performance, improve application response times, and enhance user productivity by maximizing network capacity over existing category 5 cabling. With triple-speed capability and built-in combo ports (four 10/100/1000 or four mini-GBIC) the medium to large enterprise can now simultaneously protect its current investment and migrate to the future seamlessly with Gigabit Ethernet. A compact 1U form factor and a complete set of features make the OS6300 series perfect for the following applications: Enterprise workgroups/LAN wiring closets Edge deployments and branch offices An environment where quality of ser vice (QoS) is needed for mission-critical applications Aggregation of 10/100 L2 switches or hubs Data center ser ver clusters
The OmniStack 6300 series is the first Alcatel fixed configuration Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop series of switches and complements the existing portfolio of Alcatel enterprise fixed configuration 10/100 switches that include the OmniStack 6100 and OmniSwitch 6600 series. The OmniStack 6100 series are layer 2+ 10/100 stackable switches and the OmniSwitch 6600 series are a full layer 3 capable 10/100 advanced stackable solution. Alcatels fixed configuration switches are part of the Alcatel enterprise offering that include the larger capacity, modular-based OmniSwitch 7700, 7800, and 8800 series of core switches. Together this family offers a complete edge-to-core solution with high availability, intelligent performance, and enhanced security in an easy to manage, flexible, and scalable package. Today the OmniStack 6300 series consists of the OS6300-24, a 24 port 10/100/1000 fixed-based chassis with four combo ports. Combo ports consist of four 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports and four Gigabit miniGBIC ports. Combo ports are labeled 21-24 and either copper or fiber can be used on a one-for-one basis. MiniGBIC ports support up to four Gigabit Ethernet SFP (miniGBIC) optical transceivers. Combo ports eliminate the need to add uplink modules, provide automatic failover protection, and give flexibility when deploying into existing cabling plants by allowing either copper or fiber-based connectivity. Alcatel understands the need to control service costs and provides a limited lifetime hardware warranty on all OmniStack 6300 series switches.

Alcatel OmniSwitch 6300 Series

Gigabit Ethernet

The need for bandwidth in the enterprise is driven by the need to support newer, faster and higher bandwidth applications like CRM or ERP applications, data storage and backup, and real-time collaboration with video and sharing of large office application files. The need is also driven by many industries such as science, medical, education, and entertainment to support large research projects, CAD/CAM, X-ray imaging transfer, distance learning, and video editing. Beyond the need for bandwidth, organizations also need to make wise investments in their network infrastructure to anticipate future requirements and maintain a viable network for longer periods of time due to longer lifecycles. The OmniStack 6300s extensive feature set and very affordable pricing allows customers to breathe new life into their existing infrastructure while also giving them options for a smooth migration into the future.

Secure Networking

The OmniStack 6300 has security features that allow the network to be secured at the first point of entry preventing unauthorized users, ensuring privacy, and filtering out potential traffic that can be detrimental to the entire network. 802.1x, a standards-based approach to network access, is an effective way of challenging users by requiring a username and password before allowing network access. Learned port security is a security feature that allows only pre-authorized network devices to communicate with each other, providing protection against rogue devices such as unauthorized WLAN access points or unsecured and potentially virus infected laptops or PCs. Access control lists offer the flexibility to deny unwanted communication between devices and provide a first line of defense against network attacks by filtering out and dropping the attack. The private VLAN feature can be used to isolate user traffic and forward it to the uplink for further classification, preventing users local to the same switch from snooping on each others data. Private VLANs are perfect for locations where multiple user groups or departments must share a common VLAN, like university dorm rooms or shared commercial locations. Administration of the switch is also secured by encrypting remote management with secure shell (SSH) for Telnet, Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for web-based management and SNMPv3 for network-wide management systems like Alcatels OmniVista enterprise network management platform. Additionally all administrators can be centrally authenticated through a RADIUS or TACACS+ server. A local database is also provided on every switch for administrator authentication.

High Availability

A high performance network means nothing if its not available for use. The OmniStack 6300 series is built to provide features to minimize network downtime and increase availability for mission-critical applications.
Standards-based features like Per-VLAN Spanning Tree (802.1s) and Rapid Recovery Spanning Tree (802.1w) can be used to provide added resiliency, fast failover to redundant links and layer 2 load sharing on otherwise unused bandwidth capacity (network links). Dynamic link aggregation (802.3ad) can provide inherent failover to remaining existing links in the aggregate should one or more links fail, along with automatically building multi-Gigabit capacity with other network switches. By deploying the OS6300-BPS backup power solution, customers have simultaneous one-forone (1:1) backup power for all OmniStack 6300s in case the internal power supply fails. Having a 1:1 solution means each switch has backup power available that is not shared with other switches.

Advanced QoS

To ensure mission-critical applications get the quality of service needed, the OmniStack 6300 series has the ability to classify, prioritize, and forward mission-critical traffic with the intelligence and expediency required using flow-based traffic characteristics. The OmniStack 6300 classifies traffic, marks packets with layer 2 or layer 3 priority values, and prioritizes traffic into one of the eight per-port hardware queues that support strict or weighted round robin (WRR) queuing algorithms. Two different queuing schemes give you more flexibility to support your particular needs.

Manageability

Because switches at the edge of the network are typically deployed in large numbers, it is essential that they are easy to install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot. The OmniStack 6300 uses an industry standard command line interface (CLI) to simplify configuration and reduce total cost of ownership through reduced training costs. An intuitive webbased element manager with built-in help provides point and click configuration for newer features, which reduces the risk of misconfiguration and speeds up the introduction of new features. Integration into the SNMP-based OmniVista allows network-wide management, trap monitoring, statistics gathering, and a MAC address locator to locate end-devices for troubleshooting. Readable ASCII configuration files allow offline or scripted editing of configurations, making bulk changes easier and faster to deploy in large quantities. Every network connection begins at the physical layer, where many network connectivity problems can also occur. Each 10/100/1000 switch port on the OmniSwitch 6300 has the built-in capability, known as auto MDI/MDI-X, to determine if the cable attached is straight-through or crossover, and what network device (PC, switch, router) is on the other side of the cable. The switch will automatically create the necessary link-up condition. Auto-negotiation on each port determines what port speed and duplex setting to use when connecting network devices. The use of combo ports allows flexibility in deployment and will also reduce sparing costs by eliminating the need for separate uplink modules.
