Compatibility The Hitachi Storage Integration Lab tested this family of Deskstar drives for compatibility with a wide variety of systems, Host Buss Adaptor cards, and Operating Systems. Testing was to demonstrate compatibility with the following hardware and software. Other combinations of hardware and software are expected to function with this product family, but have not been evaluated. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies recommends you back up all data before installing your new hard drive. 9) Early versions of Linux do not provide 48 bit addressing support, so will not work with larger capacities of Deskstar 7K250. See Deskstar 7K250 Hints & Tips document for more detail.

Specific notes 1) Old releases of Award BIOS do not support hard drives with capacity greater than 33.8GB. A common symptom is a hang condition during HDD detection as part of System POST. To install a Deskstar 7K250 drive that is >30GB will require either a system BIOS upgrade or use of a third party utility. 2) The Windows 2000 setup does not allow a FAT32 file system partition larger than 32GB. So with the Deskstar 7K250 family multiple partitions will be required. Alternatively NTFS file system can be used. 3) Microsoft hot fix Q260233 is required for some installations involving Windows 2000 and ULTRA100 ATA(mode 5) drives. See the Microsoft Website. 4) Windows 2000 provides ACPI support. In most situations users can benefit from this feature. However in some systems it may be found necessary to disable ACPI to avoid poor performance, or worst case data corruption due to incorrect shutdown. For details of how to disable ACPI see Deskstar 7K250 Hints & Tips document. 5) In situations where multiple Deskstar 7K250 drives are being installed within a system enclosure:- To maximize performance, care should be taken to ensure that adequate mechanical isolation is provided between the drives, to avoid operational vibration from one drive being transmitted to other drives within the system. For more details of specifics associated with RAID operation of ATA drives, see Deskstar 7K250 Hints & Tips document. 6) Due to the large capacity of some Deskstar 7K250 drives, latest BIOS will be required on this controller. 7) Service Pack 1 is required to access full capacity of 164GB & 250GB models of the Deskstar 7K250 family.
