Having seen this old model at a recent yard sale it was hard to pass it up. This is a very old computer. It was made for a few years. The design of this computer is impressive. There are many colors available for it. The iMac G3 is nearly ten years old, in computer terms that may as well be a thousand years!

2006-11-11 06:38:33 I wished Apple had waited a little bit before making a big deal about these. I ordered my 17 inch iMac and received it in 4 days. Everything from the second I took it out of the box was a first class experience.

What if I have a problem?
If the computer wont respond or the pointer wont move:
First, make sure the mouse and keyboard are connected.

Then do this:

If the problem occurs frequently when you use a particular application:
m Unplug and then plug in the connectors and make sure they are firmly seated.
Then try to cancel what the computer is doing.
m Check with the applications manufacturer to verify that it is compatible with your computer and the version of system software your computer is using.
If the problem occurs frequently:
m Press the Command (x) and period (.) keys at the same time. If a dialog box appears, click Cancel. m If that doesnt work, hold down the Option and Command (x) keys, then press the Esc key. If a dialog box appears, click Force Quit. If you return to the Finder (the Finder is checked in the Application menu; see page 4), restart your computer.
If the computer still doesnt respond, restart it.
m Choose Finder in the Application menu (see page 4). Then open the Help menu and choose Mac Help. Look at the section on how to prevent and solve problems. You may need to check for extension conflicts or reinstall your computers system software.

Other problems

If you have a problem with your dial-up Internet connection:
m You probably started up your computer using the system software on a CD instead of your hard disk. If this is the only way that you can get your computer started up, you should reinstall the system software on your hard disk. Look for instructions in Mac Help or use the Installer application on your software install CD.
If the computer wont turn on or start up:

If that does not work, reset your computer.
m To resolve problems with software, contact the software manufacturer.
If you have a problem using your computer:
m Start up the computer and immediately hold down the Command (x), Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time. Then release the keys.
m Look at the information in Mac Help for instructions and troubleshooting information. m Go to the Apple Support Web site on the Internet (www.apple.com/support) for the latest troubleshooting information and software updates.

How do I work comfortably?
The guidelines in this section can help you work more comfortably with your computer. For detailed information about ergonomics, see Apples Environmental Health and Safety Web site at: www.apple.com/about/ergonomics
m An adjustable chair that provides firm, comfortable support is best. Adjust the height of the chair so your thighs are horizontal and your feet flat on the floor. m The back of the chair should support your lower back (lumbar region). Follow the manufacturers instructions for adjusting the backrest to fit your body properly.

Keyboard

m When you use the computer keyboard, your shoulders should be relaxed. Your upper arm and forearm should form an approximate right angle, with your wrist and hand in roughly a straight line. m You may have to raise your chair so your forearms and hands are at the proper angle to the keyboard. If this makes it impossible to rest your feet flat on the floor, you can use a footrest with adjustable height and tilt to make up for any gap between the floor and your feet. Or you may lower the desktop to eliminate the need for a footrest. Another option is to use a desk with a keyboard tray that is lower than the regular work surface. m Use a light touch when typing and keep your hands and fingers relaxed. Avoid rolling your thumbs under your palms.

Computer

m Arrange the computer so the top of the screen is slightly below your eye level when youre sitting at the keyboard. The best distance from your eyes to the screen is up to you, although most people seem to prefer 18 to 28 inches (45 to 70 cm). m Position the computer to minimize glare and reflections on the screen from overhead lights and windows.
m Position the mouse at the same height as your keyboard. Allow adequate space to use the mouse comfortably.

Important

Dont lift the computer using the flip-out foot. You could damage your computer. To move your computer, grab the handle on the top of the computer with one hand; with your other hand, hold the bottom of the computer.

4570 cm (1828 in.)

Avoiding fatigue
m Change your seated position, stand up, or stretch whenever you start to feel tired. Frequent short breaks are helpful in reducing fatigue. m Use a light touch when typing or using a mouse and keep your hands and fingers relaxed. m Some computer users may develop discomfort in their hands, wrists, or arms after periods of intensive work without breaks. If you begin to develop chronic pain or discomfort in your hands, wrists, or arms, consult a qualified health specialist immediately. m Allow adequate workspace so that you can use your keyboard and mouse comfortably. Place papers or other items so you can view them easily while using your computer. A document stand may make reading papers more comfortable. m Eye muscles must work harder to focus on nearby objects. Occasionally focus your eyes on a distant object, and blink often while you work. m Clean your screen regularly. Keeping the screen clean helps reduce unwanted reflections (see page 27).

iMac FAQ

Overview
Q. Whats new about iMac? A. Designed to be the best computer for the digital lifestyle, the next-generation iMac is more powerful than ever. New features include your choice of a 500-, 600-, or 700-MHz PowerPC G3 processor; a built-in slot-loading CD-ROM or CD-RW drive; 64MB, 128MB, or 256MB of RAM; and greater storage capacity. In addition, iMac offers two FireWire ports for easily connecting DV camcorders and high-performance storage devices. All models come with Mac OS X, iMovie, and iTunes pre-installed. Available in Indigo, Graphite, and Snow, the new iMac systems are affordably priced at just $799, $999, $1299, and $1499 (suggested retail price). Add it all up and the new iMac offers you the shortest route to the Internet, the best way to make Desktop Movies, and the easiest way ever to rip, mix, and burn your own CDs. Q. Are additional options available when I purchase an iMac through the online Apple Store? A. Yes. When you purchase any iMac through the Apple Store at www.apple.com/store, you can order your system with additional memory (up to 1GB) or an AirPort wireless networking card preinstalled.1 You can also buy third-party software and accessories for your iMac from the Apple Store. Q. Is iMac compatible with Mac OS X?
Yes. All iMac systems are compatible with Mac OS X.2 In fact, every iMac now comes with both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 preinstalled, so you can continue to run your Mac OS 9 applications and easily transition to Mac OS X at your own pace.
A. Q. Can I use recordable business-card-size CDs with my iMac? A. The CD-RW drive included in selected iMac models can write to standard 12-cm CD-R and CD-RW media and read 8-cm and 12-cm CDs. Business-card-size CDs and other irregularly shaped CDs are not compatible. Q. Does iMac still support the Harman Kardon iSub subwoofer? A. Yes. The iSub continues to be compatible with iMac in Mac OS 9. It works with the built-in Harman Kardon Odyssey digital audio system in iMac to enhance your enjoyment of audio CDs and MP3 titles.

FAQ iMac

iTunes and CD-RW

Q. What is iTunes?

iTunes is your passport to the world of digital music. With this intuitive, easy-to-use application, you can convert songs from your music CDs into MP3 format (also called ripping), store your entire digital music library in one place, create personal playlists, and tune in to hundreds of Internet radio stations, all with the point-and-click ease the iMac is famous for.3 iTunes features extremely high-quality, unlimited encoding and lets you download music to the most popular portable MP3 players. If your iMac includes a CD-RW drive, you can use iTunes to create playlists of your favorite tunes in the order youd like to hear them, then burn custom audio CDs that you can play in virtually any CD player.
A. Q. Can iMac burn data CDs as well as music CDs? A. Yes. The ability to create data CDs is built into the Mac OS. You simply drag the files you want to copy to the CD-R or CD-RW icon on the desktop. iMac automatically burns the files you choose onto the disc. Q. What is the difference between CD-R and CD-RW media? A. CD-R discs (short for CD-recordable) are write-once, read-multiple media. Your best choice for burning your own custom CDs, CD-R discs are compatible with most consumer audio CD players and typically cost about half as much as CD-RW discs. CD-RW discs (short for CDrewritable) can be erased and reused many times. This makes them ideal for computer data and digital music storage. Note that most standard audio CD players do not play audio files stored on CD-RW discs. Q. Are blank recordable CDs included with iMac models that include the built-in CD-RW drive? A. Yes. These iMac models come with two blank CD-R discs so you can start burning your own CDs right out of the box. You can purchase additional blank discs through the online Apple Store at www.apple.com/store. Q. How much music can be stored on an audio CD? A. Typically, up to 74 minutes of music can be stored on a CD. However, iTunes allows you to store even more music on a single CD-R or CD-RW disc. For example, while a typical 5-minute song stored on an audio CD takes up about 35MB, the same song could be stored using only about 7MB when converted to the MP3 formateven using the iTunes high-quality setting (192 Kbps). In this example, you could conceivably store over 90 songs on just one CD-R or CD-RW disc to play back with iTunes.

iMovie and DV

Q. What do I need to make Desktop Movies with iMac? A. With the exception of a DV camcorder, iMac comes complete with everything you need to make stunning digital movies. You get Apples acclaimed iMovie digital video editing software,3 built-in FireWire ports, a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire camcorder cable, and enough processing power, memory, and disk storage to let you be as creative as you can be. With iMac, making movies is not only easy, its fun.

Q. Do I need a separate FireWire or other cable to record audio from my DV camcorder?
No. Unlike analog systems, digital video camcorders transmit high-quality audio and video through a single FireWire cable, included with every iMac.
A. Q. Is it possible to use an analog camcorder to create movies? A. iMovie is optimized for digital video (DV); however, there are several adapters that enable you to connect analog camcorders to iMac using FireWire. (Some of these adapters are available at the Apple Store.) Certain DV camcorders can also be used as an adapter that lets you import analog video. For the best quality, performance, and simplicity, we recommend that you use DV camcorders with iMac and iMovie. Q. Can I get additional special effects plug-ins and audio effects for iMovie? A.
Yes. Apple offers additional special effects plug-in software, audio effects, backgrounds, and other material for use with iMovie on the web at www.apple.com/imovie.
1 Wireless Internet access requires AirPort Card, AirPort Base Station, and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with
AirPort. Range may vary with site conditions.
2 Mac OS X requires 128MB of SDRAM. 3 iTunes and iMovie are licensed for legal or rightholder-authorized use only.
