Looking Back at Aristo-Craft Year-By-Year
Polk's Model Craft Hobbies turns 75 years old in 2010. The Insider will be taking a look back at Polk's and Aristo-Craft all throughout the year.
Aristo-Craft started making G Gauge buildings by licensing some Delton wood structure designs and converting them to plastic kits. These were successful and later converted to fully built-up and painted items.

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2010
The Passing of Gilbert Rosenzweig
Gilbert Rosenzwieg was my adopted big brother. Ive known him all my life and worked with him for almost 50 years. Gil, was a model airplane hobbyist as a teenager and found my fathers hobby shop in Newark in the early 1930s. Gil would stop in after school and on weekends to help Nat and talk about model airplanes. Gil became a member of the famous Bambergers Jr. Airman Club run by Irwin Polk and assisted by Nat. When Nat commingled his Newark model airplane shop with Irwins in NYC, Gil officially started working with them in 1935. Gil was a perfectionist in everything he did and became the go-to guy for radio control for the thousands of hobbyists in the NY area and for some 350 hobby shops that relied on Gil for the latest and greatest in model airplane technology. He made the hobby happen and it became an industry in the mid 20th century. Gil devoted his life to model airplanes, but with the introduction of the computer, bright kids like Gil gravitated away from hobby in recent times. Gil moved into our OEM division selling motors and parts to
manufacturers. He and Irwin put Mabuchi Motors on the map in the U.S. Mabuchi shared Gils NY office for many formative years and then opened their own office in NYC. Gil continued to sell to smaller manufacturers Mabuchi Motors and has helped hundreds of them with his expertise. Gil was the originator of our firm moving into hobby manufacturing. Again, his perfectionism was instrumental in making nothing but the finest of products for the hobbyists. Gil worked with us for over 75 years and devoted his entire life to the model hobby industry. Gil will be remembered
by thousands of hobbyists he has helped over the years and by his coworkers who enjoyed his company over that time. His wife, Shirley, understood his need for perfectionism and helped him with his goals for perfectionism in his home life. Our condolences to Shirley and thanks for sharing Gil with us. With love and thanks for being part of our company and lives.

To perform the calibration at NSTX in early December, researchers used a Californium-252 neutron source. This particular source emits neutrons with energy similar to deuterium-deuterium fusion neutrons. Deuterium is a form of hydrogen used to fuel fusion reactions. Two deuterium atoms collide or fuse at hot temperatures to create energy.
trons," Darrow noted. "Physically it works because plasma is a big circle. Running the neutron source on a set of circular tracks is a good approximation of plasma from the point of view of the neutron detectors." The absolute calibration measured the production of neutrons per second and provided a realistic simulation of plasma-created neutrons. "It mimicked a ring of neutron emission that is most like the shape of the neutron emitting region of NSTX plasmas," Darrow said. And since the source was securely encapsulated, it made any possibility of a radiation release very remote.
To obtain the needed calibration data, the team mounted the small source on the model train and remotely ran it around five different circular tracks inside the NSTX vacuum vessel for three days. Two neutron detectors picked up the data from the exterior Besides helping scientists understand of the vessel. "A model train may sound low tech, but it provides us with exactly the right arrangement we need for this calibration," said Darrow. "Besides, thousands of hobbyists have tested it before us so it has high reliability for this job." Choo-Choo!

Installing Ball Bearings in the ART29101 Freight Truck

by Harry Hartman

Harry Hartman is the Large Scale Show Manager for the East Coast Large Scale Train Show.
This is part two of an article written about installing ball bearings into Aristo-Craft freight trucks. Last issue, we looked at Aristo-Craft's Modern Freight Truck. This article will deal with the freight ART29100 Modern Freight Truck trucks that have been on the Aristo-Craft freight cars (ART 29101 with plastic In fact, you do not have to take the driver; 1 course threaded long drytrucks off of the car to install these, wall screw; 1 tube of ART # 29411 wheels and no coupler). but it becomes a handful leaving the ball bearings; and one pair of vise As with any process, this is not the trucks on the car. grips. which was on the floor. The bubble was between the two level hairs but touched the one end hair. I always picked up the car after it stopped rolling forward and took it back for the next rolling. The very last rolling, with metal wheels and ball bearings, I did not pick it up because I was writing down the last batch of numbers. I looked up and the car was rolling backwards. It rolled all the way back to the "Easy Loader." So for all three experiments, the car was rolling uphill through all of the experiments. So what are some of the benefits of installing ball bearings in your freight cars? They have much less drag than the plastic wheels and will roll almost twice as far as just metal wheels and about 3 times as far as plastic wheels. Not only do you gain the less drag, but you can pull more cars on your train with out strain. Also less drag on your engines. I know and have heard, They are too expensive for me to do my whole rolling stock. Remember, you can run some cars with metal wheels and ball bearings with those with just metal wheels. As I told you in the previous article, I purchased a couple tubes at a time and before too long I had many of my cars installed with metal wheels and ball bearings. I hope you will try a couple to see how easy they are to install and how much better they make your trains run. As the one TV commercial says, Try them, and I bet you will like them!

ECLSTS Spring Show Is On Track for March 26th and 27th, 2010
As I sit at my computer and write this article, I just posted a note on the Aristo-Craft Forum that said that the Spring ECLSTS is only 100 days away. By the time you read this, it will be more like 80 days. As you read this, all of the December Holidays will have passed and we will be starting into the new year of 2010. I hope Santa brought you some Large Scale Trains or accessories for your garden railroad. I received some Christmas cards that were made at home and pictured their garden railroad. The pictures and cards were neat. I also received a t-shirt with the individual's railroad logo on the back of the shirt and I also received an ink pen with the name of the garden railroad printed on the barrel of the pen. These were all neat ideas and I enjoyed receiving them. This will be the 15th East Coast Large Scale Train Show. Many of the vendors you look for will be at the show and we will be seeing some new faces. The next issue of the Insider will carry the list of vendors that will be at the Spring show. If you have a favorite vendor and they have not been at the ECLSTS, you might want to call them and tell them to consider purchasing a booth at the show. I hear that there will be some new releases before the Spring Show.
2010 Spring ECLSTS Show Car
I know that there were some excellent bargains at the Fall Show. I am sure that there were many cars or trucks that went home with less room available than when they came to the show. We saw many goodies going out the door and the person would be back very soon with a smile. Some would be saying I need something else that I saw and I hope it is still there! The Show car is another excellent selection from the Aristo-Craft team. The cost will be posted on the Aristo-Craft Forum and in the March/April Insider. There has been lots of interesting information posted on the Aristo Forum about the history of this railroad. Remember it is a offset coal hopper and will come in 4 road numbers. We have received a paint sample of the show car and it is pictured in this article. As with all our show cars, they have been ordered with metal wheels. I also heard that the Aristo-Craft new Kuppler should be here in time for the Spring show. So you may want to purchase some Kupplers

and try them on this fantastic looking show car. One of the other things that usually happens at the Spring ECLSTS is that TATE puts together the Fundraiser for the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. So start saving your nickels, dimes and dollars. Last year we had a silent donor donate $500 towards the fund as a challenge/match. Remember nickels make dimes and dimes make dollars. I know several people save their pocket change for this event each year. We hope you had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope Santa saw how good you were this year and brought you some G Gauge trains. See you in March for the next issue of the Insider and also at the ECLSTS, March 26th and 27th.

The Kuppler: A Pictorial Review

by Stan Cedarleaf

Sometime toward the middle of November 2009, a package from Philadelphia mysteriously showed up on the table on my back patio. Inside this mysterious package were 3 pairs of the new Aristo-Craft Kupplers. I was most excited to see how these much discussed Kupplers would work. As I opened the package, I was quite impressed with the quality of the product which had been well thought out and well-machined. Each individual package included 2 complete Kupplers plus parts. I had 2 or 3 cars that needed new couplers so I decided to try my first Kuppler installation. The coupler has some extraordinary features in that the shanks are quite long and very flexible. They are very different from any coupler on the market today Rather than try to explain them with many words, Ill do my best to describe them with images. The images may be larger than normal but that way youll be able to see how they work.
As it comes from the package, youll notice the 2 screws extending from the bottom of the shank. When screwed completely in, they will lock the shank and/or the knuckle from swinging.
In addition to the 2 screws that are visible above, there are 2 more screws in the bottom. These will allow you to take the coupler completely apart and configure it into many different variations.
The coupler shank and the knuckle will swing to give a wide range of movement for smaller radius curves. For this image, the knuckle and the shank were locked by the locking screws to keep them in position.

(Continued on Page 10)

These Kuppler to coupler applications have been running for many hours on our layout without a single uncoupling incident. Im quite pleased with the ease of installation, the availability of different configurations, reliability when running and the match up with other knuckle couplers on the market today. The body mounting style for the Kuppler is unique and as with any new product, it will take some thought for each application except for mounting on Aristo-Craft rolling stock with the mounting plate and mounting holes. Ive successfully matched the Kuppler with knuckles manufactured by Aristo-Craft, Bachmann, Kadee, LGB, Lionel and USA.

It was standing room only for this session. Thanks Lewis and Marty for a great job. One of the fun jobs at these shows is awarding the door prizes. On Saturday we had two fun experiences with two excited young train enthusiasts. The first one was when we got ready to have our drawing. We asked this little girl that was walking past the

2009 LARGE-SCALE TRAIN SHOWS
A Message From Lewis Polk
The economy is in serious trouble and JJ Productions is going to skip their SELSTS and MWLSTS in 2009 and we will see what happens going forward. The shows are for-profit shows and havent attracted enough of a following to be so. Frankly, we are not able to build for the future at this juncture of the economy and have decided to hold a second show in York in the Fall of 2009 instead of the two more distant shows. Harry Hartman has done a wonderful job putting on delightful shows and we have backed the shows financially in spite of losses. Frankly, we have no confidence in the economys success next year and will no longer undertake a losing venture until the economy is back on its feet. The York show is currently successful and like the TCA that holds the show twice a year in the Spring and Fall, we will attempt a second show at York. Will it work? We dont know, but we feel we need to give our vendors a better chance to make a profit than the other two shows have done. Therefore, we have booked the same hall in York for October 22-24, 2009, instead of continuing with the other two shows in Perry and Springfield. We regret this choice as we have had tremendous support from the local clubs in both venues and the shows have been terrific if under attended. We need to fill a demand and the demand has not been sufficient enough to continue onward. The economy is so tough that we need to concentrate on and expand winners, rather than nurturing new shows. Our thanks to all who have supported us and worked so hard to make the shows so quality successful, if not monetarily so. We felt the shows helped to build the hobby, but we need to at least break even, not financially underwrite the endeavors. We hope the economy rapidly recovers and the overall G Gauge market is not involved in a recession beyond todays tough marketplace. All the best, Lewis Polk Aristo-Craft Trains

Sneak Peek: ART-11921 Dual Track Bender
Aristo-Craft showed off its new ART-11921 Dual Track Bender at several train shows recently. The new bender can bend rails while still in the ties. A key feature of this new product is a large handle to allow for easier pushing of the bender over ties. New Aristo-Craft flex track in development will not require you to cut the ties for bending, either. Production delivery for the ART-11921 Dual Track Bender is early January and the MSRP is $225. Look for it at your local hobby retailer or call Aristo-Craft for more information!
NEW ARISTO-CRAFT PRODUCT! ART84196 - A NOZZLE EXTENSION FOR BUTANE CANS
G Gauge has a heavy concentration of Live Steamers, all who use butane to fire up their locos. The least expensive butane cans are made by Asian companies who supply them to fit into hot plates for restaurants. However, they are made to fit into special compartments that hold these cans in place. We have made our own extension nozzle to allow the can to easily reach the input positions on Live Steam locos, bringing down the cost of operation dramatically. This nozzle will become a staple in the live steam field. It works on all brands of Live Steamers. Please stock and list this new offering and watch it become a favorite. This product is carefully machined and made to the highest standards that will satisfy the entire Live Steam community. It has our usual five-year warranty on it and is a product proudly made in our factories.

WHY HASNT G GAUGE RAILROADING REACHED ITS POTENTIAL?
Gardening is Americas number one hobby and blending it with motion in the garden with model trains seems to be an ideal partnership. Having trains operate in natural environments like the real ones do is the best way to run trains and that was the reason G Gauge trains have sparked so many people's interest. Instead of modeling a specific scene on a specific day in history on a carefully modeled table diorama, you model in a real world outdoor scene and cope with nature as the real trains do. Of course, scale is a matter of CRE-55496 Trailing RC Car perspective out of doors as a blade of with Train Engineer receiver installed grass and all the rest of natures flower and fauna can only be approximated enough of us have the time to tackle is compromised by the sparking of to scale; whereas the indoor modeler the maintenance adequately and thus the power where the wheels meet the running well becomes problematic. track and G Gauge requires far more can control all aspects of scale. garden railroaders not to do the same to store their trains close at hand for operation. There are a host of garden sheds available at the larger garden shops and Chuck actually copied the Silverton Station from a Pola kit to make his station house. Im sure most of you have seen shed builders on the highways who make childrens' play gyms, gazebos and play houses who certainly can provide a maintenance shed for you to use as the center of your layout. Paul Busse, who makes public displays of trains, always has hidden maintenance sheds to service the trains out of site of the public and we should follow his lead in this manner to increase the enjoyment of running our trains. Once again, our point is not to change the way anyone currently runs their trains, but to suggest we can bring more newbies into the hobby with battery and radio control operation as the preferred methodology of running trains out of doors. This is just one opinion, but we will have this approach available for our trade partners to sell and hopefully attract new customers.

1/29TH SCALE REASONING
We frequently get asked about our choice of producing models in 1:29 scale. If you are new to the hobby, then this article will help explain our reasoning. In 1986-7 we were looking to make a G Gauge item that was pure Americana, not the meter gauge of LGBs line (LGB is a trademark of Marklin). Nat Polk, an old time member of the TCA and formerly the Ives club knew that Lionels Standard Gauge trains were 1/29 and they literally dominated the American market in the first part of the 20th Century. Lionel was made in Irvington, NJ where Nat lived, as did Dorfan, and he had a close relationship with the Lionel management. Nat always noted the wow factor at the TCA shows where Lionel tinplate standard gauge sold in the tens of thousands of dollars and ran on a non-scale wide track to counter the higher center of gravity. Nat was also close to the Lines Brothers in England and noted that OO dominated there running on H.O. track and had most of the market as it does today. Yes, there are H.O. buffs in England, but they represent perhaps 5% of the market. People in England wanted preciseness of scale in their models, but it wasnt important that the gauge was slightly different. This is true today in O Gauge, where there is a small element of 1/48 scale operators, but O Gauge was flourishing without a scale that matched their gauge.
The Alco FA-1 Diesel, one of Aristo-Craft's first 1:29 models
Nat had sold LGB trains for almost 20 years before we entered the market and knew how many miles of 45mm track was sold. Nat was a great marketer and knew that if we produced a train that did not run on 45 mm track we would lock out the 20 years of hobbyists who have invested in those miles of rail. Nat, of course was proven right as USA Trains We might say the same thing about Code ( a copyright of Charles Ro) and now 332 rail that is far more forgiving out of Bachmann Europe ( a copyright of Ka- doors where Mother Nature affects the
