Excellent!!! This is an EXCELLENT wireless system. What really made the system give me the "wow" factor, was the battery reading. Line 6 XDR95 Nice unit but try to get the battery out in a hurry very poor.

Looking Back at Aristo-Craft Year-By-Year
Polk's Model Craft Hobbies turns 75 years old in 2010. The Insider will be taking a look back at Polk's and Aristo-Craft all throughout the year.
Aristo-Craft started making G Gauge buildings by licensing some Delton wood structure designs and converting them to plastic kits. These were successful and later converted to fully built-up and painted items.

THE ARISTO-CRAFT INSIDER

by Lewis Polk

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2010
The Passing of Gilbert Rosenzweig
Gilbert Rosenzwieg was my adopted big brother. Ive known him all my life and worked with him for almost 50 years. Gil, was a model airplane hobbyist as a teenager and found my fathers hobby shop in Newark in the early 1930s. Gil would stop in after school and on weekends to help Nat and talk about model airplanes. Gil became a member of the famous Bambergers Jr. Airman Club run by Irwin Polk and assisted by Nat. When Nat commingled his Newark model airplane shop with Irwins in NYC, Gil officially started working with them in 1935. Gil was a perfectionist in everything he did and became the go-to guy for radio control for the thousands of hobbyists in the NY area and for some 350 hobby shops that relied on Gil for the latest and greatest in model airplane technology. He made the hobby happen and it became an industry in the mid 20th century. Gil devoted his life to model airplanes, but with the introduction of the computer, bright kids like Gil gravitated away from hobby in recent times. Gil moved into our OEM division selling motors and parts to
manufacturers. He and Irwin put Mabuchi Motors on the map in the U.S. Mabuchi shared Gils NY office for many formative years and then opened their own office in NYC. Gil continued to sell to smaller manufacturers Mabuchi Motors and has helped hundreds of them with his expertise. Gil was the originator of our firm moving into hobby manufacturing. Again, his perfectionism was instrumental in making nothing but the finest of products for the hobbyists. Gil worked with us for over 75 years and devoted his entire life to the model hobby industry. Gil will be remembered
by thousands of hobbyists he has helped over the years and by his coworkers who enjoyed his company over that time. His wife, Shirley, understood his need for perfectionism and helped him with his goals for perfectionism in his home life. Our condolences to Shirley and thanks for sharing Gil with us. With love and thanks for being part of our company and lives.

2010 Track Pricing Update
With the start of the new year, the pricing for track materials is still very volatile. Copper prices are up by 1/3 in this past year. We had rescinded an earlier increase when the price peaked in 2008 and gave "buy four, get one free" pricing all year; However, the high raw material prices have returned and we will stop the special "buy four, get one free" sale after February 28, 2010. Yes, it has dampened sales for G Gauge, but the prices are not much different from the early LGB prices in the 70s and 80s, when the market boomed.

This is not a personal choice by Aristo-Craft, but when a product is 80% all copper the product is commoditized to a great extent by the raw materials the pricing is dictated by the world commodity pricing. We buy by the LME pricing, which is more than $7,000 per metric ton right now. We have slightly lower priced Aluminum track, but there are tradeoffs. We cant see Copper declining in value any time soon and remember we called it the new gold last year.
2009 Copper Pricing Chart
There is no solution, but we are not profiting from this commodity price increase and see even lower grade rail in the future and battery operation as a viable solution.
Aristo-Craft Club Cars for 2010!
In honor of Polk's Model Craft Hobbies 75th Anniversary this year, the 2010 Aristo-Craft Club Car selection is a special C&O 40' Plug Door Box Car decorated with "anniversary" graffiti. There will be four different versions (as seen above). Each version will come in two different road numbers. The cars will come with metal wheels. The price for this unique series is $50.00 per car. There will not be a non-graffiti version. The 2010 Aristo-Craft Railroad Club can be found on page 12.

The Neutron Express

A ride around toy train tracks inside a fusion experimental machine can reveal much about a hot gas called plasma. PPPL research staff recently mounted a neutron source on a toy train inside the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX), placed it on hobby train tracks that had been installed and sent it on a three-day continuous zip around the rails. The purpose: to calibrate the neutron rate during fusion experiments. Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is a hot gas that makes up the stars and is used as the fuel to produce fusion energy. Energy from plasma is released in the form of neutrons. "Since NSTX plasmas emit copious amounts of fusion neutrons, scientists need an accurate measurement of the neutron rate. They use this to compare, for example, whether the simulation code has faithfully modeled the various phenomena occurring in the plasma," said PPPL physicist Doug Darrow. Darrow, along with PPPL engineer Lane Roquemore, led the project. PPPL technician Sylvester "Sly" Vinson led the assembly and installation portion. About two dozen PPPL scientific and technical, health physics, computing, management, and review staff supported the effort.

To perform the calibration at NSTX in early December, researchers used a Californium-252 neutron source. This particular source emits neutrons with energy similar to deuterium-deuterium fusion neutrons. Deuterium is a form of hydrogen used to fuel fusion reactions. Two deuterium atoms collide or fuse at hot temperatures to create energy.

trons," Darrow noted. "Physically it works because plasma is a big circle. Running the neutron source on a set of circular tracks is a good approximation of plasma from the point of view of the neutron detectors." The absolute calibration measured the production of neutrons per second and provided a realistic simulation of plasma-created neutrons. "It mimicked a ring of neutron emission that is most like the shape of the neutron emitting region of NSTX plasmas," Darrow said. And since the source was securely encapsulated, it made any possibility of a radiation release very remote.
To obtain the needed calibration data, the team mounted the small source on the model train and remotely ran it around five different circular tracks inside the NSTX vacuum vessel for three days. Two neutron detectors picked up the data from the exterior Besides helping scientists understand of the vessel. years ago. Researchers have since used the method on fusion machines at the Lab and at other fusion research institutions. "A model train may sound low tech, but it provides us with exactly the right arrangement we need for this calibration," said Darrow. "Besides, thousands of hobbyists have tested it before us so it has high reliability for this job." Choo-Choo!

Installing Ball Bearings in the ART29101 Freight Truck

by Harry Hartman

Harry Hartman is the Large Scale Show Manager for the East Coast Large Scale Train Show.
This is part two of an article written about installing ball bearings into Aristo-Craft freight trucks. Last issue, we looked at Aristo-Craft's Modern Freight Truck. This article will deal with the freight ART29100 Modern Freight Truck trucks that have been on the Aristo-Craft freight cars (ART 29101 with plastic In fact, you do not have to take the driver; 1 course threaded long drytrucks off of the car to install these, wall screw; 1 tube of ART # 29411 wheels and no coupler). but it becomes a handful leaving the ball bearings; and one pair of vise As with any process, this is not the trucks on the car. grips. The entire assembly can be easily taken apart and put back together in many variat i o n s f o r m a n y d i ff e r e n t a p p l i c a t i o n s. I disassembled the entire Kuppler in less than 30 seconds. This will allow the knuckle to be turned over as well as the mounting bracket. The variations are many as shown below.
This image shows the shank has been inverted, as well as the knuckle and the mounting bracket. This allows for many different mounting applications and coupler matching situations. The plate and screws will be reassembled before use. Compare this image with the one at the beginning of the article.
Perfectly! Next was to match it with a standard Aristo-Craft knuckle coupler as this is the battery car for the GP40. How did this match? As mentioned earlier, this is a great looking product but just how easy is it to install the Kuppler and how does it work with the other knuckle couplers in the hobby. The first installation was on a 40 foot Aristo-Craft stock car. I took the truck off, saw the 2 mounting holes just after the mounting plate, placed the out of the package Kuppler over the holes, drilled a 1/16th pilot hole for each screw and mounted the Kuppler with the screws provided in the package. That operation took about a minute and how did is match with a standard Kadee?
Perfectly! Gee, this is kind of fun. Lets see what else we can do.

(Continued on Page 11)

Page 11

(Continued from page 10)

The next application was on an LGB boxcar. The Kuppler needed to be modified for this one. I had to invert the knuckle, turn the shank over and change the mounting bracket to so it would set on the 2 brackets on the bottom of the car. I used two #4 x 3/4 inch flat head sheet metal screws to mount the Kuppler after drilling a 1/16th inch pilot hole for each screw. How did this one match up? Not quite perfectly. The reason it didnt match quite perfectly is because the LGB knuckle is longer (more massive) than the Kuppler knuckle and the little tab on the Kuppler that keeps all other couplers matched would not allow the Kuppler knuckle to close. So I just cut it off. See the circle above. After this operation was completed, how did the Kuppler match with LGB?
These Kuppler to coupler applications have been running for many hours on our layout without a single uncoupling incident. Im quite pleased with the ease of installation, the availability of different configurations, reliability when running and the match up with other knuckle couplers on the market today. The body mounting style for the Kuppler is unique and as with any new product, it will take some thought for each application except for mounting on Aristo-Craft rolling stock with the mounting plate and mounting holes. Ive successfully matched the Kuppler with knuckles manufactured by Aristo-Craft, Bachmann, Kadee, LGB, Lionel and USA.

The Point To Point Track The start voltage settings and max speed settings work great for controlling the Aristo Auto Reverse unit. I set the start voltage to 25% and the max speed to 75%, which works well for the small locos I run on the point to point. Plus I always know I have the The Mainline correct polarity for the reversing unit Since I would be using track power for Revo receivers in either locos or by watching the direction arrows.

(Continued on page 6)

The Narrow Gauge Loop The Revo control settings, such as momentum and start speed, make the Revo a great wireless system for track power control. All of my narrow gauge locos ran smooth with great low speed performance. The PWC power did not cause any noticeable problems with my non Aristo-Craft locos, although I did not test all brands.

(Continued from page 5)
control box cars I wanted this track to come up to full power quickly. With the speed steps set to 5 and the start voltage set to the max of 25, the Revo receiver supplied full power to the track in seconds. The Revo receiver has handled three 4 axle locos on this loop without overloading or overheating. When I add two sound box cars, it will overload at 65% speed. Since most of my running is below 50% max speed, I am happy with this. All locos ran smoothly with good low speed performance. The Revolution System as a PNP Receiver The first PNP installation was into a GP40. I opened up the loco, pulled out the dummy plug, installed the receiver board, and installed the capacitor board and remote link button. I put the remote link button under the top cover and fed the wire into one of the clip holes, then to the receiver. The capacitor board is recommended when using track power. It helps the receiver run smooth on dirty track. I had made the decision to include the board with all of my installs to help ensure no power problems. (Fig. 2)
went quickly. A little playing and I the power wires and connected them had the start speed, momentum and to the track power connections of the PNP board. This supplied power reverse delay set up. to the RX. I did the same with the The GP40 ran great with the PNP motor wires, connecting them to the receiver. An added bonus I did not motor output connections on the PNP expect was the headlights remained board. (Fig. 4) off until I applied start voltage to the loco. At rest, just the cab and running lights were lit. Pretty cool! The Revo as a Non-PNP Receiver My 1998 CNJ RS3 did not have the DCC/RCC PNP board so this install took slightly longer. After opening the loco I found a plug on the main circuit board with two red wires and two black wires. Two were marked Power and two were marked Motor. Studying the board I realized that power came out of the board through the Power wires and back into the board to the motors via the Motor wires. I installed a Non-PNP board near this plug using circles of hook & loop material. In the photo below, you can see the plug with the power / motor wires in the upper right corner of the circuit board. (Fig. 3)

Fig. 4

I had previously installed new LEDs for headlights so I found those wires and connected them as shown in the Revo manual. The capacitor board did not fit under the long hood because of the smoke unit. I cut the board in half and soldered wire jumpers across the cut traces of the board. (Fig. 5)
I was then able to mount the capacitor Note - This board is a separate pur- board as two rows of three caps. This Fig. 2 chase. It has screw terminals instead allowed it to be mounted under the Setting up the transmitter with the of wire leads to make connections, (Continued on page 7) loco type, name and road number which make the install easier. connected by a circuit board trace on the dummy plug. While I had track power pick ups in my sound box car, I wanted to also pick up power from the RS3. So, I cut the traces between pins 2 and 3 and between pins 10 and 11 on the dummy plug. (Fig. 7)

short hood. I again fed the plug of the remote link button through a clip hole and down to the receiver. This install took a bit longer and a bit more work than a PNP install but it was still not difficult. (Fig. 6)

Fig. 9

Note Photo 9 shows a MU connection to the front of the loco also. I can connect another loco to this MU connector, which supplies motor power from the RX.

Fig. 6 Fig. 7

Again, setting up and linking the receiver to the transmitter was quick and easy. By separating the headlight wiring and connecting it to the NonPNP board I again had cab and marker lights lit by track power and the headlight controlled by the receiver.
Leaving the Track/Battery switch in the track position, the factory installed MU connector would supply track power from the loco to the box car.
The next step was to solder another MU connector, with a female end, to pins 3 and 4 and pins 11 and 12 after The Revo running the wires in from the area of as a Track Powered Control Car the coupler (Fig. 8)
I use sound box cars rather than installing sound cards in each loco. I decided to try the same thing with the Revo receiver. I opened a newer RS3 that had the DCC/RCC PNP board. I then went to the Aristo web site and found a DCC/ RCC Connector Wiring Diagram under the Technical Support section. Studying the diagram and notes I found that pins 1 and 2 and pins 11 and 12 were for power connections. Pins 3 and 4 and then 9 and 10 are for motor and headlight connections. The power, motor and headlight pins were

Fig. 8

With the loco wiring complete, I opened the box car and installed a Non-PNP board and receiver, again using hook & loop material. I drilled a hole in the floor of the box car behind the area for the body mount coupler. I ran two MU connectors, one male and one female to the Non-PNP board. The female MU wires were connected to the track power connections on the board and the male MU wires were connected to the motor output connections of the board. I also installed the capacitor board and connected it to the receiver. Using an idea David Bodnar presented at the York Revolution Seminar, I connected a reed switch to the wiring harness of the remote link button and mounted the reed switch on the edge of the box car floor. This will allow me to use a magnet to link the receiver to the transmitter. The power inputs of my sound card had been wired to track power. I now moved them to the motor outputs of the receiver. I plugged in the auxiliary

By having the receiver in the box car with the sound board I have sound card. full control over both the sound board I connected the control/sound box and the loco. car to the RS3 using the MU connectors, programmed the transmitter I had now used the Revolution reand linked the receiver. I powered up ceiver successfully in four completely the track, hit the forward button on different installations, all using track the transmitter and the loco slowly power. The receiver worked as a PNP moved forward with the appropriate unit, Non-PNP unit, in a control car

and as a trackside power controller. The ease of programming, controls, and features of the 2.4Ghz Revolution TE system have allowed me to move to a new way of running my trains. It has proven to be a versatile receiver, capable of several types of track power installations. I thought I was happy before, but now I am very happy!!
2009 Fall ECLSTS Is Coming Soon!

by Harry Hartman

Harry Hartman is the Large Scale Show Manager for the East Coast Large Scale Train Show.
The month of May ended with a big bang (boom) for the Hartmans. I was volunteering to help restore an old 1930s Wooden B&O Caboose. We were stripping the old rotten wood off the caboose and putting new wood on it. I was helping put water seal on the new boards and I got my feet tangled up in some sawhorse legs and fell. Well, my hand hit the wall and I broke my shoulder in 5 (yes, five) places. I fell on May 30th. I had surgery on June 9th for a partial replacement. I have a metal ball and stem in my shoulder now. I am going through rehab to regain the use of my shoulder. It is very hard to type and write since it was my right shoulder and I am right-handed. I have turned into a one-handed typist.
