Looking Back at Aristo-Craft Year-By-Year
Polk's Model Craft Hobbies turns 75 years old in 2010. The Insider will be taking a look back at Polk's and Aristo-Craft all throughout the year.
Aristo-Craft started making G Gauge buildings by licensing some Delton wood structure designs and converting them to plastic kits. These were successful and later converted to fully built-up and painted items.

The Passing of Gilbert Rosenzweig
Gilbert Rosenzwieg was my adopted big brother. Ive known him all my life and worked with him for almost 50 years. Gil, was a model airplane hobbyist as a teenager and found my fathers hobby shop in Newark in the early 1930s. Gil would stop in after school and on weekends to help Nat and talk about model airplanes. Gil became a member of the famous Bambergers Jr. Airman Club run by Irwin Polk and assisted by Nat. When Nat commingled his Newark model airplane shop with Irwins in NYC, Gil officially started working with them in 1935. Gil was a perfectionist in everything he did and became the go-to guy for radio control for the thousands of hobbyists in the NY area and for some 350 hobby shops that relied on Gil for the latest and greatest in model airplane technology. He made the hobby happen and it became an industry in the mid 20th century. Gil devoted his life to model airplanes, but with the introduction of the computer, bright kids like Gil gravitated away from hobby in recent times. Gil moved into our OEM division selling motors and parts to
manufacturers. He and Irwin put Mabuchi Motors on the map in the U.S. Mabuchi shared Gils NY office for many formative years and then opened their own office in NYC. Gil continued to sell to smaller manufacturers Mabuchi Motors and has helped hundreds of them with his expertise. Gil was the originator of our firm moving into hobby manufacturing. Again, his perfectionism was instrumental in making nothing but the finest of products for the hobbyists. Gil worked with us for over 75 years and devoted his entire life to the model hobby industry. Gil will be remembered
by thousands of hobbyists he has helped over the years and by his coworkers who enjoyed his company over that time. His wife, Shirley, understood his need for perfectionism and helped him with his goals for perfectionism in his home life. Our condolences to Shirley and thanks for sharing Gil with us. With love and thanks for being part of our company and lives.

Installing Ball Bearings in the ART29101 Freight Truck
by Harry Hartman
Harry Hartman is the Large Scale Show Manager for the East Coast Large Scale Train Show.
This is part two of an article written about installing ball bearings into Aristo-Craft freight trucks. Last issue, we looked at Aristo-Craft's Modern Freight Truck. and try them on this fantastic looking show car. One of the other things that usually happens at the Spring ECLSTS is that TATE puts together the Fundraiser for the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. So start saving your nickels, dimes and dollars. Last year we had a silent donor donate $500 towards the fund as a challenge/match. Remember nickels make dimes and dimes make dollars. I know several people save their pocket change for this event each year. We hope you had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope Santa saw how good you were this year and brought you some G Gauge trains. See you in March for the next issue of the Insider and also at the ECLSTS, March 26th and 27th.

The Kuppler: A Pictorial Review
by Stan Cedarleaf
Sometime toward the middle of November 2009, a package from Philadelphia mysteriously showed up on the table on my back patio. Inside this mysterious package were 3 pairs of the new Aristo-Craft Kupplers. I was most excited to see how these much discussed Kupplers would work. As I opened the package, I was quite impressed with the quality of the product which had been well thought out and well-machined. Each individual package included 2 complete Kupplers plus parts. I had 2 or 3 cars that needed new couplers so I decided to try my first Kuppler installation. The coupler has some extraordinary features in that the shanks are quite long and very flexible. They are very different from any coupler on the market today Rather than try to explain them with many words, Ill do my best to describe them with images. The images may be larger than normal but that way youll be able to see how they work.
As it comes from the package, youll notice the 2 screws extending from the bottom of the shank. When screwed completely in, they will lock the shank and/or the knuckle from swinging.
In addition to the 2 screws that are visible above, there are 2 more screws in the bottom. These will allow you to take the coupler completely apart and configure it into many different variations.
The coupler shank and the knuckle will swing to give a wide range of movement for smaller radius curves. For this image, the knuckle and the shank were locked by the locking screws to keep them in position.

The Story Behind Aristo-Craft's New DVD
Cameras, lights, and microphones are not an everyday occurrence at the offices of Aristo-Craft Trains. However, that recently changed with Aristo-Crafts first foray into multimedia production, a DVD called How Model Trains Are Made" (ART-90010). The 35-minute DVD lets viewers follow along with Lewis Polk and Scott Polk as they travel across the world to China to visit Aristo-Crafts factory, Sanda Kan. Another Polk family member, Jonathan Polk, is behind this new video endeavor. Jonathan is the advertising designer for Aristo-Craft, as well as being an editor for television and film. The expensive price for customers to fly to China for a week did not help either. 2009 LARGE-SCALE TRAIN SHOWS
A Message From Lewis Polk
The economy is in serious trouble and JJ Productions is going to skip their SELSTS and MWLSTS in 2009 and we will see what happens going forward. The shows are for-profit shows and havent attracted enough of a following to be so. Frankly, we are not able to build for the future at this juncture of the economy and have decided to hold a second show in York in the Fall of 2009 instead of the two more distant shows. Harry Hartman has done a wonderful job putting on delightful shows and we have backed the shows financially in spite of losses. Frankly, we have no confidence in the economys success next year and will no longer undertake a losing venture until the economy is back on its feet. The York show is currently successful and like the TCA that holds the show twice a year in the Spring and Fall, we will attempt a second show at York. Will it work? We dont know, but we feel we need to give our vendors a better chance to make a profit than the other two shows have done. Therefore, we have booked the same hall in York for October 22-24, 2009, instead of continuing with the other two shows in Perry and Springfield. We regret this choice as we have had tremendous support from the local clubs in both venues and the shows have been terrific if under attended. We need to fill a demand and the demand has not been sufficient enough to continue onward. The economy is so tough that we need to concentrate on and expand winners, rather than nurturing new shows. Our thanks to all who have supported us and worked so hard to make the shows so quality successful, if not monetarily so. We felt the shows helped to build the hobby, but we need to at least break even, not financially underwrite the endeavors. We hope the economy rapidly recovers and the overall G Gauge market is not involved in a recession beyond todays tough marketplace. All the best, Lewis Polk Aristo-Craft Trains

Sneak Peek: ART-11921 Dual Track Bender
Aristo-Craft showed off its new ART-11921 Dual Track Bender at several train shows recently. The new bender can bend rails while still in the ties. A key feature of this new product is a large handle to allow for easier pushing of the bender over ties. New Aristo-Craft flex track in development will not require you to cut the ties for bending, either. Production delivery for the ART-11921 Dual Track Bender is early January and the MSRP is $225. Look for it at your local hobby retailer or call Aristo-Craft for more information!

garden railroaders not to do the same to store their trains close at hand for operation. There are a host of garden sheds available at the larger garden shops and Chuck actually copied the Silverton Station from a Pola kit to make his station house. Im sure most of you have seen shed builders on the highways who make childrens' play gyms, gazebos and play houses who certainly can provide a maintenance shed for you to use as the center of your layout. Paul Busse, who makes public displays of trains, always has hidden maintenance sheds to service the trains out of site of the public and we should follow his lead in this manner to increase the enjoyment of running our trains. Once again, our point is not to change the way anyone currently runs their trains, but to suggest we can bring more newbies into the hobby with battery and radio control operation as the preferred methodology of running trains out of doors. This is just one opinion, but we will have this approach available for our trade partners to sell and hopefully attract new customers.
