INTRODUCTION We congratulate you on choosing an ART 4x4 Power Distribution Unit. You will find that they have been designed for easy use. The latest advances in power technology have been utilized in the design of these units. Please read all instructions carefully before operating. All 4X4 Models (Power Base, Smart Power and Power Station) Feature: Front-Mounted Circuit Breaker Reset Switch Surge & Spike Protection EMI & RFI Filtering Unique 4X Distribution on the Back- Four of the Eight Rear Switched Outputs are wider for Wall Wart Devices Total Power Capacity of 1800 watts Rugged All-Steel Chassis Occupies 1u Rack Space Smart Power (SP) adds: 2 Front Shock-Mounted Light Posts Backlit Linear Meter to Monitor Input Voltage Separate On/Off Light Switch Adjustable Dimmer Dial Power Station (PS) has all SP features, and adds: Backlit Ammeter to Monitor Load Current The 4x4 POWER DISTRIBUTION UNITs protect your delicate electronic equipment with a high voltage varistor (MOV) surge and transient suppressor. The fast-acting suppression circuit responds in less than a nanosecond, clamping transient voltages to safe levels. OPERATION MAXIMUM LOAD The eight circuit breaker protected outlets are rated at 15 amps, which is equivalent to 1800 watts at 120 volts. If the total load on the 4x4 POWER DISTRIBUTION UNITs outlets (and rack lights on the SP & PS) exceed 15 amps, the circuit breaker will trip, cutting off power to your rack. If this happens, reduce the load by unplugging one or more units from the 4X4 POWER DISTRIBUTION UNIT. Then push the circuit breaker button in to reset it. LAMPS (SP & PS)
The 4x4 POWER DISTRIBUTION UNITs lamps pull out easily and may be aimed to provide the best illumination for your equipment. Each lamp is supplied with a 7-watt night light bulb. Replacements are readily available at most hardware stores, or wherever household light bulbs are sold. Adjust the DIMMER control for the desired brightness. The lights do not turn off automatically when the tubes are pushed in, so be sure to switch the RACK LIGHTS switch to the OFF position before pushing in the tubes.
CAUTION-BURN WARNING: The caps and light tubes become hot during normal operation. Avoid burning your fingers by allowing the cap to cool completely before unscrewing it. Do not push the tubes in while the caps are unscrewed. If you find that the heat from the tubes is excessive, reduce the setting of the Dimmer control, or substitute a 4-Watt bulb.
BULB REPLACEMENT (SP & PS) Bulbs are easily replaced without removing the unit from the rack. Simply unscrew the cap on the end of each light tube, remove the old bulb and replace.
POWER SWITCHES The 4x4 POWER DISTRIBUTION UNIT has a master POWER switch for the rear outlets as well as the lights (SP & PS). This switch glows when the unit is on. Warnings
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. All operating instructions should be read before using this equipment. To prevent the risk of electrical shock, do not remove the cover or the back. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Please refer servicing to a qualified service technician. Do not expose this unit to heat sources such as radiators, stoves, or other items that generate excessive heat. This unit should be cleaned only with a damp cloth, audio solvents or cleaning detergents. Do not get moisture inside the unit. When moving this equipment, it should be placed in its original carton and packing, to reduce the risk of damage in transit.
WARRANTY AND SERVICE INFORMATION

Limited Warranty

Applied Research and Technology will provide warranty service for this unit in accordance with the following warranty statement: Applied Research and Technology (A R T) warrants to the original purchaser that this product is free from defects in workmanship and materials for a period of one year from the date of purchase. A R T will, without charge, repair or replace, at its option, defective product or component parts upon prepaid delivery to the factory service department or an authorized service center, accompanied by proof of purchase date in the form of a valid sales receipt. EXCLUSIONS: This warranty does not apply in the event of misuse or abuse of the product or as a result of unauthorized alterations or repairs. This warranty is void if the serial number is altered, defaced or removed. A R T reserves the right to make changes in design and make additions or improvements upon this product without any obligation to install the same on products previously manufactured. A R T should not be liable for any consequential damages, including without limitation, damages resulting from the loss of use. Some states do not allow limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific rights and you may also have other rights, which vary, from state to state. For products purchased outside the United States, service will be provided by an authorized distributor of Applied Research and Technology products.

SERVICE

The following information is provided in the unlikely event that your unit requires service. Use this procedure to return units in the United States only. For service outside the United States, please contact your authorized A R T distributor. 1) Be sure the unit is the cause of the problem. Check to make sure the unit has power supplied, all cables are connected correctly, and the cables themselves are in working condition. 2) If you find the unit to be at fault, write down a description of the problem, including how and when the problem occurs. 3) Contact our Customer Service department at (716) 297-2920 for your Return Authorization number or questions regarding your repair. Customer Service hours are Monday through Friday 9:00AM to 5:00PM Eastern time. 4) Pack the unit in its original carton or reasonable substitute. The packing box is not recommended for a shipping carton. Put the packaged unit in another box for shipping. Print the RA number clearly under the address. 5) Include with your unit: a return shipping address (we cannot ship to a P.O. Professional Power Distribution Systems with Advanced Power FilteringTM

4x4 PRO SERIES

Presenting the 4x4 PRO SERIES Power Distribution Systems from ART. Built on the foundation of the popular 4x4s, the PRO SERIES are durably constructed, reliable power conditioners for use in many applications. Wherever power management system is required, the 4x4 PRO SERIES provide the surge protection you need to keep your rack safe from unwanted disruption. ALL PRO SERIES models have an additional internal discrete module called APF (Advanced Power Filtering) which filters out digital and dimmer hash as well as any high frequency noise that is above the audio range. Some off-the-shelf add-on modules saturate and lose their filtering effectiveness as the load increases, but by using a high power discrete design we were able to create a filter that stays effective over the full operating range. By using both Common Mode and Differential Mode topologies in series for the filter design we are able to block virtually all of the unwanted noise that is between the AC line and ground, and also the two sides of the AC line. This has the additional benefit of reducing ground loop problems in your
system. High frequency noise currents in particular are highly attenuated in both directions so that any line noise that could be generated by one of your components is not allowed to get back into your main A.C. wiring so if you use a number of PRO SERIES Power Conditioners in your setup, you can distribute and isolate the noisy components from the sensitive components in your system. Additionally, any signals above 10kHz are filtered from the line with over 40dB of attenuation above 100kHz and beyond. Every PRO SERIES power conditioner is designed with a power capacity of 1800 Watts, surge/spike protection, APF with EMI & RFI filtering, front-mounted unswitched power outlet and an adjustable rear-mounted gooseneck light source for bright illumination behind the rack. The spacing and alignment of the rear outlets to accommodate various size power plugs and AC adapters. The SP4x4 and PS4x4 are equipped with pull-out light pipe lamps with an auto-off microswitch built-in for a quicker shut down.
