Test Drive Report for Abit RX300SE-PCIE Guarding the Low-End PCIe Front Line
Abit RX300SE-PCIE There isnt too much thats flashy about the Abit RX300SE-PCIEs packaging, making it easy to determine that the card is certainly made for low-end application. Small as it may be, there is no lack of content to be found inside. In it is a manual, driver disc, S-Video cable, S-Video to Composite adapter cable, DVI to D-Sub adapter. The cables are translucent so the visual effect is pretty nice.
Abit RX300SE-PCIE and accessories Adopting a low-profile PCB, the Abit RX300SE-PCIE is a cost saving design. On it is a tiny cooler fan over a rectangular heatsink that looks to be covering both the VPU and the graphics memory, but that isnt the truth because two graphics memory chips are located on the other side of the card unprotected.

RADEON X300 SE VPU 5ns Samsung memory makes for a maximum of 400MHz memory clock, and that is what we see here. There are 4 (2 front, 2 back) of them for the maximum of 128MB and a 64bit memory
interface. The 64bit memory interface is the primary difference to the X300 graphics card, which has a 128bit interface.
Samsung 5ns TSOPII memory chip There usually arent any problems including a set of D-Sub, S-Video out, and DVI-I interfaces on a common full-sized video card, but the low profile Abit PCB does make it a bit more difficult. Undeterred, Abit uses a data cable to connect the PCB to the D-Sub interface.

Overclocking There very little potential to be found in this card. The highest we were able to take the core and memory up to was 390MHz and 420MHz respectively, which is as good as not having done anything. Temperature Testing We used the ThermalTake HardCano 12 custom temperature and fan speed test kit to establish how much punishment the Abit RX300 SE PCIE can take, with testing done under idle, heavy loading, and OC + heavy loading conditions, with temperatures taken at the point of the heatsink closest to the GPU and at the memory at room temperature of 20C/68F.

Compared to some X300 vide cards that rely solely on a heatsink for heat dissipation, the fan-cooled Abit RX300SE runs a fair bit cooler. As the overclocking envelope is very small, there is really no need to worry about the temperatures.
