Equipment and illustrations
This book describes the equipment range specified for this model at the editorial deadline date as indicated on the inside of the back cover. Individual items of equipment may not yet be available at the time of printing or may only be offered in certain countries. The illustrations are designed as schematic images. Some of the details on your vehicle may therefore look slightly different than illustrated in this manual. example: Applies to vehicles: with Audi cd changer. This way, you only have to read the sections which are applicable to your vehicle. Although the information has been grouped into the appropriate sections, there are many possible equipment combinations which may be described in this book, but not installed on your vehicle. These are listed as optional equipment and marked with an asterisk *. Registered trademarks are marked with. The absence of this symbol does not warrant unrestricted use of a term. The paragraph continues on the next page. The square marks the end of a paragraph.

Structure of the book

The contents are systematically structured in a color-coded layout to make it easier to locate specific topics and understand them.
Chapters, Table of Contents and Index
The contents of the book are divided into relatively small sections that are summarized in clearly arranged chapters (e.g. System Operation). To make it easier to use the book, we have identified the individual chapters with the color codes from the Audi Navigation System. Each color code is shown in the bottom margin of the chapter as well as in the headings and illustrations. In front of each chapter, icons shaded with the background color code of that specific section help to make the book more attractive and also serve to differentiate the fonts and facilitate navigation. The Table of Contents, organized into chapters, and the detailed Index at the end of the book help you to quickly find the information you need.
Heading summaries and step-by-step instructions
Each section has its own heading. Then follows a summary (in large, italic print), which tells you the subject matter of the section. Under an illustration you will find step-by-step instructions (in relatively large print), which tell you what you must do. Each instruction is identified with a dash. A descriptive section offering important and continuing information for each topic follows.

B A Never play CD singles or CDs which are not round (shape CDs).
Your CD player and CD changer can play and holdstandard CDs. Do not play 3 inch single CDs.CDs which are not round, (shape CDs) must not be played. They can jam up the player and cause it to malfunction.

C A Do not place an

adhesive label on a CD.
Do not use a damaged navigation DVD You should not use a scratched or damaged navigation DVD. To avoid damage, never expose the navigation DVD to direct sunlight. Always keep the navigation DVD in a suitable jewel case (e.g. CD case). Do not attach labels Do not attach labels to the navigation DVD. Attaching labels can cause an imbalance. If the labels are exposed to heat, they can become detached and cause damage to the navigation DVD drive. Do not use protective rings Commercially available protective rings must not be used. They can jam in the navigation DVD drive and damage the drive mechanism. Cleaning the navigation DVD Use only a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the navigation DVD. Wipe the DVD in a straight line from the center outwards. Heavy soiling can be removed with a commercial CD cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Please never use fluids such as gasoline, paint thinner or vinyl record cleaner or the surface of the DVD could be damaged!
Do not place an adhesive label on your CDs. Due to heat build-up inside the CD player, the label could come loose and jam up the CD player or CD changer.
D A Do not use protective rings.

Never insert an out-of-round CD (shape CDs) in the CD slot. Never leave your CDs exposed to direct sunlight.
The use of cleaning CDs can lead to mechanical damage to the drive.
To avoid damage to the DVD drive, never use a CD protective film or stabilizer (available in stores as a CD accessory).
Never place an adhesive label on your Navigation DVD.
Tips on handling navigation DVDs
To ensure perfect, high-quality navigation DVD playback, only clean navigation DVDs should be used. In addition, observe the following:

Route without stopover (Single destination mode) In single destination mode you can drive directly to a destination page 119. If you enter a direct destination and start guidance, you are given the option of up to three different routes page 130. Route with stopover (Route plan) In this mode, you can choose up to three stopovers and one final destination page 139. For example, while on your way to your final destination, you could have three stopovers, such as: the nearest gasoline station, then a restaurant and after that a point of interest to visit page 121.
Follow the traffic laws for the area in which you are driving. If driving instructions run contrary to traffic laws, the traffic laws always take precedent.
However, the system will not provide you with any information about the meaning of traffic signs and signals!
Snow and other objects on the GPS antenna or screening by trees and large buildings can interfere with satellite reception and make it more different to determine vehicle location. If several satellites are turned off or disabled, this may result in interference with GPS reception and make it more difficult to determine vehicle location.
Your map data DVD includes the continental United States (excluding Alaska), Hawaii and parts of Canada on a single media allowing for seamless routing across coverage areas. Street and city names can be changed. For this reason, there may be exceptions where the names stored on the DVD do not match the names that have been changed. Navigation DVDs can be purchased from an Audi dealer. The dealer can also provide you with information about navigation DVD updates. GPS positioning works in only one direction, i.e. the navigation system receives data to determine vehicle location, but does not broadcast data.

What does navigation mean?
Every car driver is familiar with the following situation: A journey to a holiday destination, driving into a unfamiliar town or city and a weekend trip in the immediate vicinity. Before you set off, you study the route on a map or street plan. During the journey, you find your bearings by reading traffic signs and noticing striking features of the landscape. The front passenger may also be helpful. For various reasons, however, he or she may not always be able to help you out. We all know what it means to get lost. Navigation involves locating the position of a vehicle, as well as determining the direction and distance of your destination and taking the necessary steps to reach your destination. Satellite-aided navigation enables you to travel from your starting point to your destination quickly, safely and comfortably without having to read maps.

SSP 199-012

Although the Global Positioning System is the primary source of information for the Radio Navigation System, the system is able to make allowance for short periods of reception interference. For this purpose, the direction of travel and distance travelled are only calculated using the information provided by the angle of turn sensor and the wheel speed pulses generated by the ABS wheel sensor.
Comparison with GPS signals is not possible, and position fixings are less accurate when reception is disturbed. As soon as GPS signals can again be received, the previously calculated position is corrected.
Dead-reckoning navigation
The system components of the Radio Navigation System increase the accuracy of position fixing. The navigation control unit calculates the route profile from the signal supplied by the angle of turn sensor for determining changes in the direction of travel to the left/right and the pulses generated by the ABS wheel speed sensor for calculating the distance travelled. Dead-reckoning navigation is the result of the interplay between these two sensors. The navigation control unit compares the route profile with the street map stored on the CDROM several times per second. This comparison process is known as map matching. The accuracy of position fixing can thus be increased to 5m in urban areas and 50m on long, straight country roads or motorways. If the vehicle is located on a road which is not stored on the CD-ROM, the message OFFROAD appears on the display. Map matching cannot be performed then. Therefore, only the straight line distance and the direction to the destination are displayed.

SSP 199/008

How vehicle navigation works
1. The driver enters the desired destination using the operating and function keys.
2. The position of the destination is determined using the street map on the CD-ROM.
3. The navigation control unit calculates the current vehicle position accurate to approx. 100 m using the satellite data it receives. 4. The vehicle position is determined by dead-reckoning navigation accurate to 5m and by comparison with the digital map data stored on the CD-ROM. 5. The navigation control unit calculates the distance, the direction of travel, the change of direction of travel, etc.

ABS wheel speed sensor The wheel speed pulses produced by one of the ABS wheel speed sensors at the rear axle is used for measuring the distance travelled by the vehicle. The navigation control unit receives this data from the ABS control unit. Effect of signal failure The navigation system cannot be started. Self-diagnosis The connection to the ABS control unit is monitored.

SSP 199-025

Switch for reversing lights The navigation control unit obtains a signal from the switch for the tail-lights when reverse gear is engaged. This enables the control unit to distinguish whether the vehicle is moving forwards or backwards. Effect of signal failure The navigation control unit does not recognise when the vehicle is reversing.

SSP 199-026

Self-diagnosis Fault type: No signal
Roof antenna for radio, car phone and navigation system Integrated in the roof antenna (Triplex) are the antennas for radio mode, car phone mode and navigation mode (GPS). In some Audi vehicles the antennas are positioned separately. In these vehicles, the antenna for the navigation system is located on the bootlid; the antenna for radio reception in integrated in the rear window and the stub antenna for the car phone is in the rear left body side panel. Self-diagnosis Fault type: Open circuit, short circuit to earth

SSP 199-027

Radio loudspeakers Audible route recommendations are played back over the radio loudspeakers.

SSP 199-028

The street map and the operating software are stored on the navigation CD-ROM. The CD-ROMs are updated twice a year. These CDs can be purchased through Volkswagen/ Audi dealers. Service The operator panel software of the Radio Navigation System can be adapted with a special CDROM. For example: Map colours, menu guidance and screen contents. In this case, the Customer Service will provide you with information about the scope of adaptation and procedure.
