Disassembling ISIS iQ UNO
Before you use your breast pump for the first time and every time before use, you must disassemble, wash and sanitize as per Cleaning and Sanitizing ISIS iQ UNO on page 7.

Disassembly

If you have already used your ISIS iQ UNO, turn the pump off by pressing and holding down the One-touch Memory Control until the light goes off. Unplug from the electrical wall outlet and disconnect the wall plug or battery pack cord from the control handle.

You can be quite firm when removing the control handle. First pull directly upwards away from the diaphragm. Now unhook it from the stem by moving it towards the funnel.
Remove the funnel cover and gently pull the Let-down Massage Cushion away from the funnel.
Remove the silicone diaphragm and stem, unscrew the milk container and remove the white valve.
Cleaning and Sanitizing ISIS iQ UNO
Clean with a Damp Cloth when Necessary:
These components DO NOT come into contact with your breast milk.
CAUTION: NEVER PUT THE CONTROL HANDLE, BATTERY PACK OR WALL PLUG CORD IN WATER OR A STERILIZER, AS YOU CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE PUMP.
Disassemble and Clean Before Every Use (including first use):

Cleaning Instructions:

Wash in warm soapy water and rinse, or wash on the top rack of the dishwasher. Sanitize in a steam sterilizer (electronic or microwave) or by boiling in water for 5 minutes before every use.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE ANTIBACTERIAL OR ABRASIVE CLEANERS/DETERGENTS. TO CLEAN THE VALVE, RUB GENTLY BETWEEN YOUR FINGERS IN WARM SOAPY WATER DO NOT INSERT OBJECTS AS THIS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE.

HELPFUL TIP!

The Philips AVENT Electronic and Microwave Steam Sterilizers are designed to hold the washable components of the ISIS iQ UNO and the entire ISIS Manual Breast Pump.

Preparing to Pump

When using the pump for the first time, your ISIS iQ will have retained factory settings stored in the memory as a result of quality control testing. If the One-Touch Memory Control is pressed prior to squeezing the control handle upon first use the pump will operate at these settings, which may or may not be comfortable for you. We recommend that prior to engaging the automatic mode, you establish a comfortable rhythm manually, then press the One-Touch Memory Control to continue your preferred rhythm. Using a breast pump takes practice. You may need to make several attempts before you succeed, but because ISIS iQ UNO is so simple and comfortable to use, you will soon get used to expressing milk. 1. Choose a quiet time when youre not rushed and unlikely to be disturbed. 2. Having your baby or a photograph of your baby nearby can help encourage your milk to flow. 3. Warmth and relaxation can also help, so you might like to try expressing after a warm bath or shower. 4. Placing a warm cloth on your breasts for a few minutes before you start pumping can encourage your milk flow and soothe painful breasts. 5. Try expressing from one breast while your baby is feeding from the other, or continue expressing just after a feed. 6. Repositioning the pump on your breast from time to time can help stimulate your milk ducts. 7. Some women may prefer to use the pump without the Let-down Massage Cushion. The Let-down Massage Cushion has petals that flex in and out to gently massage the area around the areola. This is intended to help stimulate a fast, natural milk flow. When using the breast pump without the Let-down Massage Cushion, the maximum vacuum level achievable will be higher. 8. To relieve engorgement, we recommend gentle, slow single pumping to relieve the pressure. Practice with your pump to find the best pumping techniques for you. Dont worry if your milk doesnt flow immediately, relax and continue pumping.

CAUTION: IF AFTER 5 MINUTES NO RESULT IS ACHIEVED,TRY AGAIN AT ANOTHER TIME OF DAY. IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN IN THE BREAST AREA, STOP AND CONSULT YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL OR BREASTFEEDING ADVISOR.
How much milk can you expect?
On average you will need to pump for 10 minutes to express 2-4ozs or 60-125mls of milk. However, this is just a guide and varies from woman to woman. If you find that you regularly express more than 4ozs/125mls of milk per session, attach a 9oz/260ml milk container to the pump body.
Assembling the Pump Body of ISIS iQ UNO
Before assembling, make sure that your hands are clean and you have correctly washed and sanitized the pump (see Cleaning and Sanitizing ISIS iQ on page 7). Also check that none of the pump components are damaged.
Parts you will need for steps 1-4:

Pump body

White valve
Silicone diaphragm with stem

Let-down Massage Cushion

Milk container

White stand

Insert the white valve into the pump body, so that it fits securely into the small round hole. Make sure the pointed side of the valve is facing down.
Fit the clear silicone diaphragm with stem into the pump body. Ensure a perfect seal around the rim by pressing down with your fingers. (This is easier if assembled while the diaphragm is wet.)
Screw the pump body onto the milk container until securely in place.
To ensure that the pump is completely stable, you can use the stand with the 4oz/125ml milk container.
Insert the Let-down Massage Cushion and secure the rim around the funnel making sure there are no gaps. Run your thumb on the flat surface between each petal to ensure there are no air pockets. (This is easier if assembled while the Let-down Massage Cushion is wet.)
Connecting the Electronics of ISIS iQ UNO
Parts you will need for steps 5-8:

Assembled Pump Body (see pages 9-10)
Firmly push the control handle onto the pump body so that it sits securely on top of the silicone diaphragm.
For electric use connect the wall plug cord to the control handle and plug into an electrical wall outlet.
For battery use, open the top of the battery pack and insert 4 x AA batteries. (For batteries compatible with ISIS iQ UNO, see page 2.) Connect the power cord to the control handle.
Batteries will last for approximately 6 hours. The light on the control handle will display a continuous RED pulsing flash to warn you when it is time to replace them. There will be enough power for approximately 1 more pumping session, with no drop-off in performance, before the pump switches itself off.

Pumping with ISIS iQ UNO

Before you begin pumping, make sure that you have correctly washed, sanitized and assembled the pump. Consult the Preparing to Pump section on page 8 for tips on stimulating let-down and milk flow. Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your breasts are clean. Relax in a comfortable chair and lean slightly forward so that your milk flows easily down the pump funnel into the milk container (you can use cushions to support your back).
Turn on Pump: Connect the power cord to the control handle and plug into an electrical wall outlet if necessary. Press and hold the One-Touch Memory Control until the light flashes ORANGE and you hear the pump turn on (this can take up to 5 seconds). Once the light turns a solid GREEN, the pump is ready to use. If the light is flashing RED, refer to the Troubleshooting Guide on page 23.
Create a Reliable Vacuum: Press the pump against your breast to form a complete seal, ensuring that your nipple fits into the funnel. Check you have a reliable vacuum by compressing and releasing the control handle so you can feel suction.

Control Handle Light

Flashing ORANGE Control Handle Setting Up Solid GREEN Motor Ready/Pump in Manual Control Flashing GREEN Pump in Automatic Mode Flashing RED Warning (see Troubleshooting Guide on page 24)

Initiate Let-Down:To encourage let-down, lightly press the handle in a way that feels comfortable and similar to your babys initial rapid suckling action. The petals on the Let-down Massage Cushion will flex in and out around the areola, creating a massaging effect, similar to babys natural mouth and jaw movements during breastfeeding. You can choose to automate this let-down phase by pressing the One-touch Memory Control after two compressions (flashing GREEN light). Once your milk begins to flow, press the One-touch Memory Control to return to manual control (solid GREEN light).
CAUTION: LET-DOWN CAN OCCUR IMMEDIATELY, EVEN AFTER JUST A FEW STROKES AND SHOULD NOT TAKE LONGER THAN 5 MINUTES (REFER TO PREPARING TO PUMP ON PAGE 8).
Milk Expression:To create a natural and effective breast pumping rhythm that can be maintained for the rest of your pumping session, compress the handle slowly and more fully (to increase the intensity of the suction), hold for 2-3 seconds and then slowly release. Once you are happy with the level of suction and rhythm, after two compressions, press the One-touch Memory Control and ISIS iQ will continue your personal pumping rhythm (flashing GREEN light).
Note:You do not need to compress the handle fully, only until it feels comfortable. The further you compress the handle, the more suction the pump will provide. If the pressure is uncomfortable, stop the automated pumping by pressing the One-touch Memory Control and break the seal between your breast and pump funnel with your finger.
Let-down is your bodys physiological response to the suckling action of your baby on the breast. This stimulates the breast to produce milk and send it towards the nipple where it is available for baby. Milk Expression occurs after let-down is achieved and milk begins to flow. It is the phase that is induced by the babys deeper more comfortable suckling rhythm.
Changing or Ending your Pumping Session: To change your pumping rhythm at any time, press the One-touch Memory Control to revert to manual control (solid GREEN light). You can then set a new pattern by repeating Step 4. To end your pumping session, press the One-touch Memory Control to revert to manual control (solid GREEN light). Break the seal between your breast and the pump funnel with your finger and remove the pump from your breast.Turn the pump off by pressing and holding the control button until the light goes off. Remove the plug from the electrical outlet if necessary, then remove the power cord from the control handle.
Storing your milk: Make sure that you have not over-filled the milk container and carefully unscrew it from the pump body. Add a sanitized screw ring and sealing disc to safely store your breast milk in the refrigerator or freezer.
Next time you turn your pump on: Resuming saved session? Even after ISIS iQ is turned off, it will remember the last programmed rhythm. If you have had a short break and your milk is still flowing, ensure you have a good seal against your breast, press the One-touch Memory Control and ISIS iQ will continue as before. Need to re-establish let-down? If you need to re-establish let-down, refer to the beginning of Pumping with ISIS iQ UNO on page 13.

CONSULT THE GUIDELINES FOR STORING EXPRESSED BREAST MILK ON PAGE 21

Troubleshooting Guide

Check for any damaged pump parts and replace if necessary. Check that all the pump components have been assembled correctly and that the white valve is positioned correctly. Ensure that the silicone diaphragm and Let-down Massage Cushion are fitted securely to the pump body and that a perfect seal is created around your breast. Make sure the Let-down Massage Cushion is pushed far enough down the center of the funnel. Run your thumb on the flat surface between each petal to ensure there are no air pockets. Make certain that the control handle is firmly in place.

Lack of, or no suction

No milk being expressed
Ensure the pump is correctly assembled and that suction is being created. Relax and try again, as expression may improve after practice. Refer to the Preparing to Pump section on page 8.
Pain in the breast area when expressing
You may be squeezing too hard. You do not need to use all the suction the pump can generate.Try compressing the handle halfway. Try squeezing the handle more gently and remember the 2-3 second pumping rhythm (refer to Pumping with ISIS iQ UNO on page 13). Consult your health professional/breastfeeding advisor.
Try leaning slightly forward so your milk flows easily down the pump funnel and into the milk container (you can use cushions to support your back). Remove and re-fit the Let-down Massage Cushion to ensure it is firmly attached and pushed far enough down the center of the funnel (This is easier if assembled while wet).
Milk is drawn up the Let-down Massage Cushion
Avoid contact with antibacterial or abrasive detergents/cleaners as they can damage the plastic. Combinations of detergents, cleaning products, sterilizing solution, softened water and temperature fluctuations may, under certain circumstances, cause the plastic to crack. If this occurs, do not use.The pump body and breast milk containers are dishwasher safe but food colorings may discolor them. Follow guidelines in Cleaning and Sanitizing ISIS iQ UNO on page 7.

Cracking or discoloration of pump parts

Lost or damaged parts

Use the spare parts included with your ISIS iQ UNO or contact Philips AVENT for replacements. Call 1.800.54.AVENT or visit www.philips.com/AVENT Ensure the pump is correctly assembled and switched on with the power indicator illuminated GREEN.

Pump not responding

Make sure the cord between the electrical wall outlet or battery pack and the pump is correctly connected. If using the battery pack, use recommended batteries and check they are inserted correctly. 3 flashes, delay, 3 flashes etc if the pump stops working and the power light is flashing RED the pump has detected a vacuum fault. Disconnect the power and check the control handle and diaphragm for obstructions or damage. Continuous RED pulsing flash Low battery warning. You should consider replacing the batteries.

Pump light flashing RED

Difficulties in separating the control handle from the pump body
The pump must be switched off via the control button in order to separate these parts. If the batteries go flat mid-pumping, you may experience difficulty. Replace the batteries or connect the pump to an electrical outlet.Turn the pump on by holding down the One-touch Memory Control until the light flashes ORANGE and you hear the pump turn on (this can take up to 5 seconds). When the light turns to a solid GREEN, press and hold the One-touch Memory Control again, to turn the pump off.The light will go out and you can now disconnect the pump from the power supply and separate the parts (refer to Disassembling ISIS iQ UNO on page 6).

1. Introducing the AVENT ISIS Breast Pump
CLINICALLY PROVEN AS EFFECTIVE AS HOSPITAL ELECTRIC* AND BATTERY PUMPS
The AVENT ISIS Breast Pump is a breakthrough in breast pump design. Its silicone diaphragm provides 100% reliable suction, whilst the letdown massage cushion naturally imitates your babys suckling action to provide fast milk flow silently, comfortably and gently. The pump is easy to assemble, discreet to use and all parts are dishwasher safe. Doctors recommend breast milk is the best nutrition for babies during the first year, combined with solid food after 6 months. Your milk is specially adapted for your babys needs and contains antibodies which help protect your baby against infection and allergies. Your AVENT ISIS Breast Pump will help you breastfeed longer. You can express and store your milk so that whether you are out for a few hours, taking a well deserved rest, or back at work your baby can still enjoy the benefits of your breast milk, even if you cant be there to give it yourself. As the pump is so silent and discreet you can take it with you anywhere, allowing you to express milk at your own convenience and maintain your milk supply. Since the AVENT bottle and teat were specially designed to mimic breastfeeding, your baby will switch easily between breast and bottle. So working mothers can continue to breastfeed morning and evening and another carer can give their expressed breast milk during the day.

5. Using the AVENT Disposable System with your ISIS Breast Pump
Simply replace the reusable AVENT bottle with the AVENT Disposable Bottle Holder fitted with a disposable bottle bag.
6. How to assemble your AVENT ISIS Breast Pump
Separate all parts and ensure pump has been cleaned and sterilised as in section 3: 1 Wash your hands thoroughly. Click the white valve (g) into the pump body (f) from underneath making sure the flat side of the valve is downwards. Place the pump body (f) onto the bottle (h). Twist gently clockwise until it clicks in place. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN Place the silicone diaphragm and stem (d) into the pump body (f). Make sure it fits securely round the rim by pressing down with your fingers to ensure a perfect seal. (This is easier if assembled whilst wet.) Place the forked end of the handle (e) under the diaphragm stem (d) and push down gently on the handle until it clicks into place. Carefully insert the let-down massage cushion (b) into the pump funnel (f) making sure it is perfectly sealed all round the rim of the funnel. (This is easier if assembled whilst wet.) Click the pump cover (c) onto the pump body (f). To make the pump completely stable insert the bottle into the stand (i).
3. To clean and sterilise your pump
Before you use your breast pump for the first time and every time before use: Separate all parts, then wash in the dishwasher or in warm soapy water and rinse. Do not use antibacterial cleaners/detergents. Sterilise in an AVENT Steam Steriliser (electric or microwave), or by boiling for 10 minutes or in a chemical sterilising solution, following the manufacturers guidelines. If using an AVENT Steam Steriliser, the pump will remain sterile in the Steriliser for 3 hours provided the lid is not removed. 4

4. To keep your pump sterile and compact for travel
After sterilising all parts, you can clip the cover (a) over the funnel and let-down massage cushion and screw the travel cover (m) onto the pump body (f) in place of the bottle or bottle holder.
7. When to use your AVENT ISIS Breast Pump
1 If possible, wait until your milk supply and breastfeeding schedule are well established, normally at least 2-4 weeks after birth, unless told otherwise by your doctor or breastfeeding adviser
The exceptions to the above are: a) If you are expressing milk for your baby to be given in hospital. b) If your breasts are engorged (painful or swollen), you can express a small amount of milk before or between feeds to ease the pain and to help your baby latch on more easily. c) If you have sore or cracked nipples, you may wish to express your milk until they are healed. d) If you are separated from your baby and wish to continue to breastfeed when you are reunited, you should express your milk regularly to stimulate your milk supply.
Repositioning the pump on the breast from time to time can help stimulate your milk ducts. Practice with your pump to find the best technique for you. However, if the process becomes very painful, stop and consult your breastfeeding adviser.
9. How to use your AVENT ISIS Breast Pump
1 Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your breasts are clean. Gently squeeze a little milk from each nipple to ensure milk ducts are not blocked. Make sure you have sterilised and carefully assembled your pump exactly as shown in sections 3 and 6. Consult the Hints to help you succeed section. Relax in a comfortable chair, leaning slightly forward (use cushions to support your back). Make sure you have a glass of water nearby. Press the funnel and let-down massage cushion of the pump firmly against your breast, making sure that no air can escape otherwise there will be no suction. As you gently push down on the pump handle, you will feel the suction on your breast. You dont need to depress the handle fully to create a vacuum only as much as is comfortable. Your milk will soon start flowing, even though you may not use all the suction the pump can generate. Begin by pumping 5-6 times rapidly to initiate let-down. Then, hold the handle down for 2-3 seconds, and allow it to return to its resting place. These 2-3 second cycles imitate your babys natural suckling pattern and allow the milk to flow into the bottle between strokes. Milk should begin to flow after the first few strokes. Dont worry if your milk does not flow immediately. Relax and continue pumping. Do not continue pumping for more than 5 minutes at a time if NO result is achieved. Try expressing at another time during the day.
You will need to find the right times of the day for you to express your milk, e.g. a) Early in the morning when your breasts are full, just before or after your babys first feed. b) After a feed, if your baby has not emptied both breasts. c) Between feeds, or in a break if you have returned to work.

8. Hints to help you succeed
Using a breast pump takes practice you may need to make several attempts before you succeed, but because the AVENT ISIS Breast pump is so simple and natural to use, you will soon get used to expressing your milk. 5
Choose a time when youre not rushed and wont be interrupted. Having your baby or a photograph of your baby nearby can help encourage let-down. Placing a warm cloth on the breasts for a few minutes before you start pumping can encourage milk flow and soothe painful breasts. Warmth and relaxation can encourage milk flow. Try expressing after a bath or shower. Try expressing from one breast while your baby is feeding from the other, or continue expressing just after a feed.
Please remember that, should the process become very painful or uncomfortable, you should stop using the pump and consult your doctor or breastfeeding adviser. 9 Whilst some women may prefer to use the pump without the let-down massage cushion, extensive trials show that, in most cases, the massaging effect of the petals flexing in and out around the areola stimulates the let-down reflex and allows you to express more milk more quickly. On average you will need to pump for 10 minutes to express 60/120ml or 2/4 ozs. However, this is just a guide and varies from woman to woman. If you find that you regularly express more than 120ml per session, please use a 9oz/260ml AVENT bottle. Do not overfill the bottle and keep it upright, otherwise it may leak from below the pump body.
Storing your milk in AVENT Reusable Bottles If your expressed breast milk will be fed to your baby within 24 hours, assemble the teat, screw ring and dome cap and attach onto the bottle for storage in the fridge. To store in the freezer (for up to 3 months), use an AVENT Sealing Disc in place of the teat and dome cap. The storage container should be clearly labelled with the date and time of expression and older milk used up first. Storing your milk in AVENT Disposable Bottle Bags If using AVENT Disposable Bags for storage, secure bag with clip and place in disposable holder base. Allow at least 25mm/1" of space between the milk and the clip as the milk will expand as it freezes. No more than 6fl.oz. (170ml) of milk should be stored in a disposable bag. Make sure it is well protected in the freezer to prevent crushing.
10. How to store your expressed breast milk
Breast milk can be stored in the fridge or freezer in either sterile Breast Milk Storage Containers (4oz/125ml or 9oz/260ml bottles fitted with sealing discs) or in pre-sterilised disposable bags, sealed with a clip. Only milk collected with a sterile pump should be stored to be fed to your baby. Expressed milk should be refrigerated immediately. Expressed breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours (not in the door) or in the freezer for up to 3 months. If you are storing milk in the fridge to add to during the day, only add milk which has been expressed into a sterile container. Milk can only be kept like this for a maximum of 24 hours (from first expression) after which it must be used immediately or frozen for future use. NEVER refreeze breast milk. DO NOT add fresh breast milk to already frozen milk.

11. Feeding your baby expressed breast milk
If breast milk has been stored in an AVENT Breast Milk Storage Container, replace the sealing disc with a sterilised AVENT teat. If breast milk has been stored in a Disposable Bottle Bag, fit the bag into the AVENT Disposable Bottle Holder. Assemble blue tinted teat, screw ring and dome cap and screw onto the top of the holder, securing the bag. Frozen breast milk should be defrosted overnight in the refrigerator. However, in an emergency, it can be defrosted in a jug of hot water. Once thawed use within 24 hours. Breast milk can be heated in the same way as any other bottle feed. Stand the bottle of milk in a bowl of hot water or alternatively, for a safe and fast way to warm feeds use the AVENT Express Bottle Warmer. Always make sure you test the temperature of the feed before giving to baby. Never heat breast or formula milk in a microwave as this may destroy valuable nutrients/ and antibodies. In addition, the uneven heating may cause hot spots in the liquid which could cause burns to the throat.
12. Choosing the right teat for your baby
Teats are numbered on the side to indicate flow rate. Do not use clear AVENT teats with your Disposable System as it will leak.
Reusable (clear teat) Newborn one hole Suitable for newborn and breast fed babies. Slow Flow two holes For a slightly faster flow. Suitable for 1 month+ and breast fed babies. Medium Flow three holes Recommended for babies 3 months and older. Fast Flow four holes Recommended for babies 6 months and older. Variable one slot With a slot instead of holes. Recommended for babies 3 months and older.
By rotating the bottle and aligning the position marker on the side of the teat with the baby's nose, you can vary the flow to suit your babys needs, generally faster at the beginning and slower towards the end (align marker I for slow flow, II for medium and III for fast flow).
13. Troubleshooting Guide
Lack of suction Check that all the pump components have been assembled correctly and that the valve is the right way up. Ensure that the diaphragm and let-down massage cushion are fitted securely to the pump body and a perfect seal is created. Ensure suction is created and the pump is correctly assembled. Relax and try again, expression may improve after practice. Please refer to the Hints to help you succeed section. You may be pumping too hard. You do not need to use all the suction the pump can generate. Try depressing the handle halfway and remember the 2-3 second pumping rhythm. Consult your health professional/breastfeeding adviser. Try removing and refitting the petal massager to ensure it is firmly attached and pushed far enough down the funnel. Try leaning slightly forward. Avoid contact with antibacterial detergents/cleaners as these can damage the plastic. Combinations of detergents, cleaning products, sterilising solution, softened water and temperature fluctuations may, under certain circumstances, cause the plastic to crack. If this occurs, do not use. Contact AVENT Customer Services for spare parts. The pump is dishwasher safe but food colourings may discolour components. Spare parts are available through AVENT Customer Services, telephone or visit our web-site at www.avent.com
