Design Goals
The Black Box was designed to be a precision monitor speaker that could produce deep bass from a relatively small cabinet and have the detail and neutrality of a studio monitor. As I have stated in the past, for me natural effortless bass is only possible with lots of cone area in the low frequency range. When using a single driver, 10 inches is about the smallest size you can get away with. Downside of these large woofers is that they need a lot of air behind them to be able to produce deep bass. This speaker shows you a way to get around that problem and still maintain a full-bodied sound. The deep-bass-small-cabinet concept is based on the principle of mounting a large woofer in a small closed box, purposely creating a slight hump in the output level and then attening the response by putting a capacitor directly in series with the woofer. When dimensioned correctly, the capacitor will react with the impedance peak of the woofer at resonance. At and just above fc it will raise the impedance, therefore letting less current go to the woofer. Just below fc it will lower the impedance slightly, there drawing a little extra current from the amplier, thus increasing the output level. So the end result is an enclosure much smaller than the equivalent version without a high-pass capacitor and at the same time having a lower -3dB point in the bass! This concept isnt new and to my knowledge has been used in many commercial designs since the late 1970s. Users of this principle (to name just a couple) are Isophon and KEF. Back in the mid 1980s KEF even had several DIY kits available with capacitors in series with the woofer. This Constructor Series CS9 for example had the famous B-300B bextrene woofer with 450uF in its direct signal path. Finally another advantage of this capacitor is that it creates a subsonic lter protecting the woofer from infra-sonic frequencies and therefore giving the woofer a little more dynamic headroom and greater power-handling.
1-1/8 tweeter to improve power-handling and maintain a coherent source rather than use a smaller 3/4 dome tweeter that has to be crossed higher and therefore stretching the radiation point at high frequencies.

Black Box

Driver Selection
The only criteria for a woofer to work according to this principle is that the driver must have a low resonance frequency fs (below 30Hz) and a high Q-factor Qts (above 0,40). Basically these type of woofers are designed for use in closed boxes or large bass-reex enclosures. Browsing around the web, I came across the Dayton RS270S-8. This 10-inch woofer is big enough, has a resonance frequency of 27Hz and a Qts of 0,41. The Q-factor will be raised slightly when there is extra resistance in the signal-path by means of the resistance of connectors and wiring and the Rdc of the inductors, in this case about 0,5 ohms. The Dayton RS270S runs very well up into the midrange, the stiff black anodised aluminium cone showing a very short decay time in the usable area. For a matching pure midrange driver I chose the Dayton RS52AN-8 which is a 2 black anodised aluminium dome-midrange because of its good on-axis and off-axis radiation pattern. Furthermore the moving mass is much lower than that of a conventional cone midrange, with speed and micro-detail in mind, a positive point. Enclosure Design

Now for the implementation of the woofer/capacitor concept. The cabinet volume for the woofer should be calculated based on a closed box with a Qtc of about 1,0. In this case it results in a nett volume of 24 litres, very small for a 10-inch woofer considering that a standard maximally at Butterworth alignment with a Qtc of 0,707 would have lead to an enclosure about 3 times as large! The midrange and tweeter come with their own sealed rear volumes so they dont need any extra air from the cabinet. All they need, practically speaking, is a bafe to be mounted on. The size of the bafe is chosen as compact as possible - the minimum width is determined by the width of the woofer, the minimum height is determined by the space required for mounting the three drivers in a vertical line as close as possible above one another. The spare space behind the midrange and tweeter I reserved for the crossover, kept well away from the high pressure inside the woofer volume.

SensorStat Wireless DDC

Description
The SensorStat is a state-of-the-art digital thermostat and occupancy sensing setback controller. Its intelligent technology manages the energy consumption of any guestroom HVAC system including: PTAC, Heat Pump, Split Systems, and Fan Coil Units. Since there is a computer chip in each unit, every guestroom actually has its own energy management system. The Wireless SensorStat (WDDC) uses several devices that work in conjunction to determine the occupancy status of a room. These devices are: a built-in passive infrared sensor (PIR), a flush-mounted door switch and transceiver and a Room Control Unit (RCU).

PRODUCT SUBMITTAL

Application
When the door opens and closes, the door switch signals the SensorStat and RCU to search for occupants. The PIR senses both body heat and motion, so it only acknowledges people, not blowing curtains or ceiling fans in the room. Once a presence is detected, the SensorStat locks into Occupied Mode giving control of the thermostat to the guest, then directs the HVAC system to accurately adjust the temperature of the room to the guest's selected setting. When the occupant leaves the room, the door switch again triggers the PIR in the SensorStat to check for occupants. After it is determined that the room is unoccupied for a certain number of minutes (selectable), the SensorStat then goes into Unoccupied Mode and automatically sets the room temperature back to a comfortable, yet energy-saving level (setback). While in Unoccupied Mode, the PIR continuously searches for motion and if a presence is detected, the SensorStat immediately goes back into Occupied Mode. Setback temperatures are programmable and they never allow a room to become too cool or warm. This enables the HVAC to quickly recover to the guest's set temperature when the SensorStat is returned to Occupied Mode.

Room Control Unit (RCU-3)
The Wireless SensorStat (WDDC) uses several devices that work in conjunction to determine the occupancy status of a room. These devices are: a built-in passive infrared sensor (PIR), a flush or surface mounted Magnetic Door Switch, Wireless Door Transceiver and a Room Control Unit (RCU). The RCU is the Command Center of the WDDC Energy Management System and is hard-wired directly to the guestroom HVAC unit. Its highly sophisticated logic and controls ensure accurate and appropriate actions dictated to the HVAC system according to the SensorStats real-time energy management requests such as Heat/Cool decision, Fan Speed and Occupancy by RF 900 MHz Two-Way Communication.

The RCU can be installed in ANY HVAC system. Its on-board memory will store all of the energy management parameters for the guestroom such as temperature setbacks, fan speeds, and property management settings. Wireless Door Transceiver
The Wireless SensorStat (WDDC) uses several devices that work in conjunction to determine the occupancy status of a room. These devices are: a built-in passive infrared sensor (PIR), a flush or surface mounted Magnetic Door Switch, Wireless Door Transceiver and a Room Control Unit (RCU). The wireless door transceiver can either be FLUSH or SURFACE mounted and both except the two conductor flush/surface mounted door switch, which is wire to a terminal block inside the Transceiver.

The SURFACE/FLUSH mounted RF Transceiver is mounted on the door frame and accepts a wired door switch that is installed in close proximity (12 or less) to the RF Transceiver. This allows the SensorStat system to determine occupancy as follows: (Door Open + Door Closed + Motion = Occupied / Door Open + Door Closed + No Motion = Unoccupied). The SensorStat system also has the ability to control a exterior door/window, which is a simple enable or disabled feature. Magnetic Door Switches

The Wireless SensorStat (WDDC) uses several devices that work in conjunction to determine the occupancy status of a room. These devices are: a built-in passive infrared sensor (PIR), a flush or surface mounted Magnetic Door Switch, Wireless Door Transceiver and a Room Control Unit (RCU). The Door Switch is used to monitor a guestroom entry door or window position as part of the SensorStat Energy Management System.
The Door Switch contacts are wired to a low voltage input of the SensorStat DDC2F or to a Wireless Door Transceiver to provide the SensorStat and RCU door position status. When the SensorStat and RCU receive information of a change in position of entry door or window, (open or closed), it considers the event in combination with information from the PIR(s) to determine whether the room is occupied or unoccupied.

The Wireless SensorStat (WDDC) uses several devices that work in conjunction to determine the occupancy status of a room. The wireless remote PIR is FLUSH mounted on adjoining rooms of the guestroom in order to accurately detect motion within the entire unit.
The SensorStat system uses a combination of door contacts and state-of-the-art remote passive infrared (PIR) sensors with a unique tamper-resistant Flat lens, designed specifically for hotels and institutional applications, to sense the presence of people within the room. By knowing the occupancy status of any room dwelling, with HVAC control within the room, (Such as Hotel/Motel Guestrooms) the SensorStat will automatically reduce energy waste by setting back the temperature of the room to preselected temperature level (Unoccupied Set Point) when the room is unoccupied or unsold. Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV)
The most common type of varistor is the Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV). It contains a ceramic mass of zinc oxide grains, in a matrix of other metal oxides (such as small amounts of bismuth, cobalt, manganese) sandwiched between two metal plates (the electrodes). The boundary between each grain and its neighbor forms a diode junction, which allows current to flow in only one direction. The mass of randomly oriented grains is electrically equivalent to a network of back-to-back diode pairs, each pair in parallel with many other pairs. When a small or moderate voltage is applied across the electrodes, only a tiny current flows, caused by reverse leakage through the diode junctions. When a large voltage is applied, the diode junction breaks down due to a combination of thermionic emission and electron tunneling, and a large current flows. The result of this behavior is a highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristic, in which the MOV has a high resistance at low voltages and a low resistance at high voltages.
To protect communications lines (such as telephone lines) transient suppression devices such as 3 mil carbon blocks (IEEE C62.32), ultra-low capacitance varistors are used. A typical surge protector power strip is built using MOVs. In our SensorStat EMS system the MOV is installed on the 24v side of the Room Control Unit wiring to protect the RCU from spikes in voltage as shown in the illustration below.
