Product works well so far. Received it before the email came that said it shipped!! I find this unit is compact for my laptop backup. Dell has these WD products at a lower price than WD even on sale.

Somewhat Satisfied After two years, this drive finally went South on me. I wish hard drives were not so short lived. I guess two years is not so bad. Working perfectly with Mac OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard). Working perfectly with Mac OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard). After 10 months.

No Comment. It seems to be a good product to this point. Runs quiet and cool. No Comment. This series of disks from Seagate are reliable, quiet and suitable for personal and business use. Good balance for the price. Buffer size.

Bought this drive to replace smaller drive in new Toshiba laptop. It is quick, quiet and no problems. I was so impressed. So far it works fine, however I noticed that it is not as quiet as the other disk I had before

MaxiVista provides three different functions to intelligently use two or more PCs together
MaxiVista allows you to use any spare PC as an extended display of your Primary PC. Toolbars and program windows can be moved and extended across both screens as if it were one big monitor. No more switching back and forth between overlapping windows - Your productivity will be increased instantly.
MaxiVista Professional and the Mirror Pro Edition additionally allows to control up to three Secondary PCs with the mouse and keyboard of the Primary PC. The focus of the mouse and keyboard automatically changes to the computer depending on the mouse cursors location.
The MaxiVista Mirror Pro Edition can mirror the screen content of your PC and send it to another PC across a standard Ethernet or Wireless LAN network connection.
6 Bold, italic type in this documentation indicate either a procedure or menu items Filenames and webpage addresses are printed in italic letters This symbol indicates an important note or useful hint
All MaxiVista settings are made from the task-bar icon of the Server Program. To open the program menu right-click the icon and select the desired command from the pop-up menu. Special MaxiVista terms are explained in the Glossary on page 21.

To run MaxiVista, your systems should meet following minimum specifications:

7 ( (6 & &

Microsoft Windows XP/2000/2003 Approx. 5 MB hard disk space for installation of MaxiVista Internet Browser to view the online manual Optional: Internet access to have access to software updates Optional: Adobe Acrobat to read and print the offline documentation

Fine - You're almost done! Yellow - solid The Server Program has successfully found the Viewer Program on the network and is awaiting your command:
Double-click the Server Program icon to activate the Secondary Display If the icon does not change to green, please reboot the Primary PC to allow finalization of the virtual video driver installation and try again If it still does not work, uninstall the Server Program on the Primary PC, reboot(!) and reinstall the software

The Server program could not find the Viewer program on the network. Yellow blinking or black Solutions:
It is very important to configure any firewall properly. Please read the following chapter to learn how this is done. If this should not help, please close and restart both MaxiVista programs to exclude the possibility of a 'hiccup' in the communication between Server and Viewer Program. This might occur sometimes because of network timing issues Still no joy? Please try our online networking troubleshooter at http://www.maxivista.com/network.htm

9 &

It is very important that you configure your Firewall Please make sure that following ports are accessible: UDP Port on the Secondary PC 5999 6000, 6001, 6002 TCP Port on the Primary PC 5950 5951, 5952, 5953
Demo version Full version
Windows XP with ServicePack 2 If using Windows XP including ServicePack 2, please simply unblock MaxiVista upon request:

That's all - You are done! If you have accidentally blocked MaxiVista from accessing the network, please open the Windows Control Panel Windows Firewall tab Exceptions tick MaxiVista in the Programs and Services list to unblock MaxiVista

4& (

If you have not yet installed Service Pack 2, please follow the below procedure if you are protecting your PC with the built-in Windows XP firewall: First, you need to know the IP address: On the Primary PC, click Start Settings Network Connections. Right-click the network connection that connects to the Secondary PC, click Status Support. Please write down the IP address. tab
In the same window switch back to the tab General click Properties tab Advanced Settings Add Enter following information: Description: TCP 5950, the IP address you have just written down; External and Internal port: 5950 (or 5951 if using the full version); check TCP confirm with OK
Now change to the Secondary PC: Click Start Settings Network Connections. Right-click the network connection that connects to the Primary PC, click Status tab Support. Please write down the IP address. In the same window switch back to the tab General click Properties tab Advanced Settings Add Enter following information: Description: UDP 5999; the IP address you have just written down; External and Internal port: 5999 (or 6000 if using the full version); check UDP confirm with OK:

You need to grant MaxiVista access to the network when being asked by Zonealarm:
Additionally, you need to change ZoneAlarms security settings. Open the ZoneAlarm control panel on the tab Firewall Set the Internet Zone Security to Medium:
Please configure all PCs where you have installed MaxiVista and ZoneAlarm. If you use another firewall, please refer to the documentation of the firewall to learn how to make above ports accessible. Please note that Symantec/Norton products and other network relating products may cause problems when used together with MaxiVista. Please disable or uninstall such programs for testing if problems should occur.

If you have multiple network adapters installed on the Secondary PC, you can manually define the IP address of the desired network adapter of the Secondary PC in the MaxiVista Configuration Network settings
If using multiple network adapters in a Windows XP computer, it is strongly recommended to define different subnets for each adapter to avoid a potential slow-down in performance (due to a Win XP bug)

* '& (

You must purchase a license for each installation of MaxiVista on your site. Not only because of the license policy, but also for an important technical reason: For each license key, the MaxiVista installation dynamically creates a unique pair of Server and Viewer Program. This mechanism ensures that multiple Viewer Programs on the same network show the screen's contents of their corresponding Server Programs. A Viewer Program created by the MaxiVista installation using license key A cannot be used together with a Server Program with the license key B! The demo version may not work with multiple installations on the same network as it has no license key mechanism
To uninstall MaxiVista click Start

Programs

MaxiVista
Uninstall MaxiVista on both PCs.
If using the full version of MaxiVista (vs. the demo) the Viewer Program is removed by simply deleting the single program file. There will be no traces left on the Secondary PC A reboot is required on the Primary PC to remove the virtual graphics adapter driver Afterwards you can safely delete the MaxiVista program folder c:/program files/MaxiVista via the Windows File Explorer.

If the virtual graphics adapter driver should not be removed, you can do this manually: Right-click the My Device Manager Computer icon on your Windows desktop Select Properties tab Hardware double-click Display adapters. If you find the MaxiVista driver is still listed, right-click on it and select Uninstall and reboot the system. Under Windows 2000 you may need to delete the file maxidemo.sys or maxivista.sys from the folder c:\winnt\system32\drivers after the reboot before to make the uninstallation option of the virtual graphics adapter available

Make sure that the Server Program is running on the Primary PC and the Viewer Program is running on the Secondary PC and that both have a yellow taskbar icon (also see chapter MaxiVista status conditions on page 19). Following methods activate the Secondary Display:
Select Enable Secondary Display from the Server Program pop-up menu Double-click on the Server Program taskbar icon Select Configuration from the Server Program pop-up menu and select the desired resolution and color depth for the Secondary Display. However, only standard screen resolutions are shown here To set higher screen resolutions or portrait mode resolutions please click on (the three dots) from the MaxiVista Configuration menu to open the Windows Display Properties Select the monitor icon associated to the MaxiVista Secondary Display and choose the desired screen resolution with the slider tick Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor click OK Short flicker on both screens directly after activation is normal
To deactivate the Secondary Display either.
Select Disable Secondary Display from the Server Program menu Double-click on the Server Program taskbar icon Select Exit from the pop-up menu to quit MaxiVista Short flicker on both screens directly after deactivation is normal
You can temporarily minimize the Secondary Display window by clicking on the Secondary Display area with the Secondary PCs mouse. The Secondary Display is still transmitted to the Secondary PC but not displayed. To retrieve the Secondary Display, click on the task button located in the task bar.

Select Configuration from the Server Program menu and enable Mirror Display to duplicate the screen content of the Server PC:
When mirroring the Primary PCs display content, the Primary PCs screen resolution may change and adapt to the Secondary PCs screen resolution. If you would like to send an extended desktop area of the Server PC, disable the option Mirror Display and MaxiVista will send the extended virtual screen to the Viewer PC. If you move program windows out of the desktop area of the Primary PC it will show up on the display of the Viewer PC:
Please refer to chapter Change the location/orientation of the Secondary Display on page 14 to learn how to change the location of the virtual desktop area. The mirroring feature is only available in the MaxiVista Mirror Pro Edition. Further information can be found on our website at http://shop.maxivista.com The remote control mode cannot be entered while mirroring the screen

MaxiVista includes two basic user modes: 1. Using the Secondary PC as an Extended Screen (Extended Screen mode) 2. Control the Secondary PC with the mouse and keyboard of the Primary PC (Remote Control mode) Please activate the Secondary Display first to be able to switch between both modes.

Select the option Switch to Remote Control Mode in the server program menu Alternatively you can hit the hotkey (Scroll lock by default) to change between the two MaxiVista modes
When you switch to the remote control mode, the extended screen minimizes into the background and once you enter the Secondary PC screen, the Primary PC's mouse takes control of the Secondary PC's mouse cursor. Additionally, keyboard input made on the Primary PC will be processed by the PC which has the mouse cursor focus. MaxiVista also synchronizes clipboard contents between all PCs. Synchronization is limited to plain text contents: If you copy text into the clipboard of the Primary PC, it will be transferred to the Secondary PC's clipboard and vice versa. To switch back from remote control to the extended screen mode with following actions:
Select the option Switch to Extended Screen mode in the server program menu Alternatively you can hit the hotkey (Scroll lock by default) to change between the two MaxiVista modes Click the Viewer program icon in the system tray of the Viewer PC VERY IMPORTANT: Any change of clipboard contents overwrites the clipboard contents of the alternate PC! The remote control mode is not available while MaxiVista is in window mode (refer to chapter.Switch between Full-screen and Window mode on page 16), mirror mode, or if the extended screen is rotated The extended screen remains active but contents stays invisible in the background when you change to the remote control mode. If you have placed windows in the extended Display area, they will instantly become visible when you switch back to extended screen mode The remote control feature is not available in all MaxiVista versions. Further information can be found on our website at http://shop.maxivista.com
By default, MaxiVista uses the Scroll Lock key to toggle between the remote control and extended screen mode. If you need this key for any other application you can select another hotkey under Configuration Define Hotkey for Remote Control Mode in the MaxiVista Server program You should also define separate hotkeys for each Server program if you want to control multiple Secondary PCs. If MaxiVista detects that the selected hotkey is used by another application, it reverts to using the Scroll Lock

!! ( !

Select Configuration from the Server Program pop-up menu and select the desired resolution and color depth for the Secondary Display. However, only standard screen resolutions are shown here

To set higher screen resolutions up to 2,560x1,600 pixels or portrait mode resolutions please click on (the three dots) from the MaxiVista Configuration menu to open the Windows Display Properties Select the MaxiVista secondary display icon and the desired screen resolution tick Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor click OK
If you disable the option Remember last used resolution, MaxiVista will always use the screen resolution that is set on the secondary PC. If you would like to change the screen resolution in Mirror Display mode, please change the resolution on the Secondary PC.
You can set the location of the Secondary PC monitor in the standard Windows Display Properties dialog: Right-click your Windows desktop Select Properties tab Settings and arrange the monitor icons corresponding to your setup:
You can also access this dialog more conveniently by clicking (the three dots) from the MaxiVista Configuration menu When selecting a certain location and screen resolution, the secondary display switches to Portrait mode. If you enable the option Rotate 180 in the MaxiVista configuration, the screen will be rotated by an additional 180. Combining both options allows setting any orientation of 180 and 270 , , The remote control mode can not be entered while the extended screen is rotated

The speed of the Secondary Display depends on following MaxiVista options: Option Hints to optimize speed Trade off

Screen resolution
Select a lower screen resolution for the Secondary Display (e.g. 800x600), to significantly reduce the screen data to be transmitted Select one of the options from Maximum display speed to Maximum quality. When choosing Maximum display speed, please make sure to disable the option WiFi

When selecting a lower screen resolution than the Secondary PC's physical resolution, the screen may get slightly fuzzy The performance of the Secondary Display is a compromise between speed and display quality. Please experiment with the options and observe the changes. A technical explanation of the display mode settings can be found below Please experiment with this setting and observe the changes. Unfortunately, we cannot make a clear recommendation here. Please disable WiFi when using the option Maximum speed

Display Compression Mode

Option WiFi
This option optimizes a few network and compression parameters. It especially changes the way how window contents is analyzed. This can be best recognized with movie player windows.
2 Description MaxiVista uses a lossless picture compression, preserving all details of the screen. 16.8 million colors (24 Bit) are transmitted for each pixel. The CPU load is low on both PCs MaxiVista uses a lossless picture compression, preserving all details of the screen but at a slightly reduced color depth of 65,536 colors (16 Bit). The CPU load is low on both PCs All pixels are transmitted without loss but the color information is reduced with the YUV420 algorithm. Slight color Recommendations 100 MBit Ethernet or Firewire network connection is recommended due to relatively high network load
Display compression mode Maximum display quality
High display quality (default mode)
10 MBit Ethernet network connection is recommended due to moderate network load

High display speed

This mode works fine on Wireless LANs. The CPU load is low

Maximum display speed
A JPEG like compression is applied which provides the highest screen performance suitable for video playback. The CPU load is high while the network bandwidth is the lowest of all display modes
This mode ensures minimal network load and works perfect on Wireless LANs. Make sure to disable the WiFi option when using Maximum speed
Select a Windows desktop background with a single color instead of a image pattern or a photo (Rightclick your Windows desktop Select Properties Tab Background Choose None (the first selection) as your wallpaper Reduce other network traffic when MaxiVista is active. E.g. avoid transferring large files between the connected PCs Router/Switches, Virus scanners and Firewalls between Server and Secondary PC may also decrease the speed. Ideally, use a dedicated network connection for MaxiVista, e.g. with a cross-over ethernet cable (refer to www.maxivista.com/lan.htm) The network speed may drop drastically if you have multiple network adapters enabled at the same time (e.g. WirelessLAN together with an Ethernet connection). Either deactivate all adapters which are not used for MaxiVista or avoid using the same subnet

!! & !

The Secondary Display content can be either displayed in a window on the Secondary Display or in full screen. Click Configuration from the Server Program pop-up menu and select Use Secondary Display in full-screen to use the full display viewing space. If the screen resolution of the Secondary PC is higher than the selected Secondary Display resolution, the picture will be zoomed to fit to the screen. When using a flat-panel display, the screen may appear a bit fuzzy because the display monitor extrapolates the picture to the actually higher physical screen resolution You get best results if the Secondary Display resolution matches the physical resolution of the Secondary PC display

Small Secondary Display content is shown in a window on the Secondary PC display Advantages Suitable if you want to see the Secondary Display and Secondary PC display content at the same time Required settings Disable Use Secondary Display in full-screen and choose a Secondary Display resolution under Configuration which is lower than the resolution defined on the Secondary PC
Secondary Display content matches the Viewer display's resolution
Small Secondary Display content is zoomed to fit to the higher Secondary PC display's resolution This way the 2nd display can be used as a magnifying glass
This is the default mode with optimal resolution
Disable Remember last used resolution and enable Use Secondary Display in fullscreen
Enable Use Secondary Display in full-screen and choose a Secondary Display resolution under Configuration which is lower than the resolution defined on the Secondary PC
MaxiVista also works on computers with multiple monitors installed. The screen resolution of the MaxiVista can be set independently from the other installed displays.
If you run a Dual Monitor setup on your Primary PC, MaxiVista simply adds yet another monitor to your Primary PC and its content will be displayed on the Secondary PC. No special configuration is required. You may only want to tweak the positioning of the displays in the Windows Display Manager
If you have installed multiple monitors on your Secondary PC and wish to use only one of the displays to display the extended screen, please right-click on the Viewer Program running on the Secondary PC and select the desired monitor from the pop-up list:
If you, however would like to use multiple monitors of your Secondary PC to display the Primary PC's extended desktop, you would need the MaxiVista Pro or Mirror Pro Edition:

Note for users of previous version 1: As you can see, the way of using multiple monitors on the Secondary PC has been changed compared to the previous version.
On the Primary PC, make sure that you have chosen the suitable amount of extra virtual VGA drivers during the installation, corresponding to the amount of monitors installed on the Secondary PC. E.g., if you run a total of three displays on the Secondary PC, install two extra VGA drivers (in addition to the one of the standard installation) to obtain a total of 3 virtual video drivers Copy all new Viewer Programs onto the Secondary PC and run them Right-click each Viewer Program and select from the pop-up menu, which Viewer program shall display its content on which physical monitor Launch all Server Programs on the Primary PC. You may need to adjust the arrangement of the new monitors in the Windows Display Manager

Select Configuration and Auto-connect on startup from the Server Program menu. From now on the Secondary Display will be automatically enabled on startup of the Server and the Viewer Program. However, this still requires you to manually launch the Server and Viewer Program. To do this automatically, copy the Server Program icon to your MS Windows StartUp folder of the Primary PC and do the same steps correspondingly with the Viewer Program icon on the Secondary PC. Then the Secondary Display will automatically be activated after each system startup of both computers. The option Auto-connect on startup will be temporarily disabled if you deactivate the Secondary Display via the Server Program. This prevents the Server Program from immediately enabling the Secondary Display again. With the next start of the Server Program, the option will be re-enabled again
Enable the option Remember last used resolution in the Configuration menu of the Server Program. If you disable this option, MaxiVista uses the screen resolution and color depth which is currently set on the Secondary PC. These settings can be changed on the Secondary PC if you right-click the Secondary PCs desktop Select Properties Display tab Settings

The resolution that is generally used by default is highlighted in the list of available screen resolutions under Configuration
& Check for Updates from the pop-up
Connect your Primary PC to the internet and select Visit our site menu of the Server Program.
MaxiVista does not transmit any personal or confidential data. It only sends a portion of the license key and the version number of the current installation. If an update has been found, follow the instructions on the website. If you want MaxiVista to stay up-to-date automatically, please enable the option Auto-check for updates. This setting is enabled by default after installation. Please do not check for updates too often. 2.3 times a month is sufficient This feature is not included in the MaxiVista demo version

MaxiVista can show three different status conditions which are represented by the taskbar icon color: When flashing, the Server Program tries to find its corresponding Viewer on the network. The blinking frequency decreases over the time

The Secondary Display is active
Latest version of this section can be found at http://faq.maxivista.com First of all, please check whether you have the latest version of MaxiVista (See section Update the software on page 19)

The mouse cursor is sluggish on the Secondary Display Try changing the WiFi option in the MaxiVista menu and read the How-To section on page 14
After I installed and launched the programs I cannot see the MaxiVista taskbar icon Windows XP only: Right-Click on Start Properties Tab Taskbar disable the option Hide inactive taskbar symbols to make sure that Windows does not hide the MaxiVista taskbar icon
I cannot activate the Secondary Display (the taskbar icons remain blinking yellow) Please first make sure that. o o o both computers meet the system requirements and are networked the Server Program is running on the Primary PC which viewing range you would like to extend the Viewer Program is running on the Secondary PC which shall act as the extended display
Reboot the Primary PC and try again. If it still does not work, uninstall the Server Program on the Primary PC, reboot(!) and reinstall the software Ensure that the network adapters and drivers are installed properly and that the network cable is firmly connected (most network adapter indicate a physical connection via a LED light) When connecting via Ethernet, make sure that you are using the right cable (so called "cross-over" cable for a direct PC-to-PC connection and a "patch" cable if you connect the PC through a network hub/router/switch) Ensure that all computers have the TCP/IP protocol installed: On both PCs, click Start Settings Control Panel Network and Internet Connections Network Connections. Locate the icon that represents this computer' connection to the other PC. Right-click the icon s click Properties. Both PCs must have the TCP/IP protocol installed and enabled To continue troubleshooting, you need to know the IP address of the computers. These are the unique IDs under which the PCs can call each other. On both PCs, click Start Settings Control Panel Network and Internet Connections Network Connections. Locate the icon that represents this computer' connection to the other PC. Right-click the icon s click Status Support tab. Write down the IP address If there is no value shown, click Repair. If there is still no value shown, then the networking is not working properly. Further assistance can be found at http://support.microsoft.com IP addresses for local network usually begin with 169.254.x.y or 192.168.x.y (whereas x and y is a number between 0.255). If the IP address does not begin with either 169 or 192, the network adapter is most likely connected to the internet instead to a local network. MaxiVista only works on a local network The value x represents the "subnet" and both computers must have the same subnet value to be able to communicate The last value y is the individual ID of the PC. This value must be different for each network adapter in both PC

If the IP addresses are correct, check whether the TCP/IP protocol does work properly locally: On both PCs click Start Run type cmd hit OK In the following window, type ping x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is the IP address you have just written down for this PC and then press Enter If you receive "Request timed out", the TCP/IP configuration is malfunctioning. Further help can be found at http://support.microsoft.com Now, try to call the other PC via its IP address: On both PCs click Start Run type cmd hit OK In the following window, type ping x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is the IP address you have just written down for the other(!) PC and then press Enter If you receive "Request timed out", the calling PC cannot find the other PC on the network. Further help can be found at http://support.microsoft.com If the last test was successful, a firewall issue is the most likely reason why MaxiVista fails to work. Please carefully inspect the firewall settings again and make sure that the ports are available as required 0 I only see a black frame during video playback (e.g. Windows Media Player) Disable any Video acceleration in the Media Player Settings (Media Player 7: Tools Options Performance. Media Player v6.4 and below: View Options Playback). In both cases slide the Hardware Acceleration slider to None Set an identical color depth on both PC in the Windows display properties dialog (Right-click your Windows desktop Select Properties Tab Settings) 0 The Secondary Display is blurry To receive a sharp screen, disable the option Use Secondary Display in full-screen under Configuration or select a Secondary Display resolution which equals the physical display resolution of the Secondary PC Alternatively, disable the option Remember last used resolution. Then MaxiVista automatically takes the resolution as set on the Secondary PC.
