Should I get a recurve or a longbow?
After youve decided to shoot with a traditional bow, you must still decide whether youre going to use a recurve or a longbow. The fast, natural pointing ability and the forgiveness of the longbow makes it a great bow for beginnersand experienced shooters, too. The longbow is lighter than the recurve, making it easier to carry in the field all day. Its straight, slender, and lightweight. When strung, the limbs curve back in the direction of the shooter. The superior speed and compactness of the recurve make it a popular choice among more experienced traditional shooters. Its a shorter traditional bow and it is much faster than the longbow. When strung, the tips on the recurve curve away from the shooter.

Should I get a one-piece or a takedown?
The first time you pack your bow into your suitcase and surround it with your hunting clothes, you realize how wise you were to purchase a bow that breaks down conveniently. And the true beauty of the take-down is you hardly ever have to take it down. Its a one-piece bow until its time to go on the roadwith all the performance, smoothness of draw, and accuracy youd expect from a one-piece bow. Should I use a glove or a tab?
While many of todays archers choose to use a mechanical release, there are quite a few of us who prefer to draw and release our arrows with our fingersthe old fashioned way. Gloves or tabs give you the satisfaction of drawing and releasing an arrow with the fingers while avoiding placing the fingers directly against the bowstring. Shooting gloves, which fit around the fingers much like regular gloves, offer convenience and the ability to quickly get on the string and be ready to shoot. Other activities can be accomplished without removing a shooting glove. A tab wraps around the fingers and, since it allows all of your fingers to act as a single unit, tends to be more forgiving and consistent. Pressure applied to the bowstring is kept even through the flat surface of a tab and the tendency to pinch the arrow is greatly reduced. If as a finger-shooter your priority is convenience, youll want a glove. If accuracy is your focus, youll choose a tab.

Selecting And Building Arrows
Wood? Aluminum? Carbon? Which kind of arrow does your bow prefer? Actually, your bow doesnt really care! As long as an arrow is undamaged, of proper stiffness, and has a minimum of mass weight, it will shoot from your bowregardless of what its made of. (Most bow manufacturers require six grains of arrow weight per pound of draw weight; Martin bows require only five.) So what makes one material better than another? It all depends on what youre looking for as an archer. If you appreciate the traditional aspects of archery, youll favor wood arrows. Wood arrows are easily tapered to accept many traditional-style heads andsince theyre non-metallicare arguably quieter as they pass through the bow. If youre looking for an arrow material thats superior to wood in weight consistency and in straightness, youll use aluminum arrows. While wood arrows must be straightened and carefully weighed to match, aluminum arrows eliminate this need. If you want cutting-edge technology, youll get carbon arrows. Carbon is the very latest in arrow materials. Not only can carbon arrows be relied upon for straightness, they stay straight when other arrow materials bend. Carbon shafts are stiffer than wood or aluminum of comparable weight, so less material is requiredresulting in lighter, faster arrows. Carbon makes a more effective hunting arrow, since its more efficient at dissipating vibration, and the reduced energy loss upon impact provides increased target penetration.

Which Arrow Rest For Y ou?
Choosing the right arrow rest can seem confusing because there are so many different designs available. But you can simplify your choice by dividing arrow rests into two categoriesthose designed for finger shooters and those designed for archers who use release aids. Arrow Rests

Choosing the right arrow rest can seem confusing because there are so many different designs available. You can simplify your choice by dividing arrow rests into two categoriesthose designed for finger shooters and those designed for archers who use release aids. If you draw and release your arrow with your fingers, youll want an arrow rest that offers side or horizontal support, such as a plunger button or spring arm. Because arrows drawn and released with the fingers flex horizontally as they pass through the bow, these types of rests are most suited to stabilize this arrow flight and give the best results. If you use a mechanical release aid, your arrow flexes vertically as it passes through the bow, and you dont need side support for it. The best arrow rest for you is one which gives support from below, particularly one that includes a form of tension adjustment. As youre making your choice, keep in mind that simplicity in an arrow rest is goodbut high-tech features such as micro-adjustability and overdraw compatibility can make your bow more versatile and easier to tune.
