"Garmin and TomTom lead the pack in GPS and for an entry level GPS this Garmin 200 performs flawlessly. "I first had a tom tom, which was stolen so when I went to purchase another GPS. We have Bike Friday Travel Consultants ready to help. 877-313-4134 How Bike Friday Came to Be The Solution to a Travel Problem AlanandHanzScholz, Bike Friday's founders, grew up building and racing performance bikes at a family-owned shop in Fargo, North Dakota. The idea of manufacturing a highperformancetravelbike crystallized during a Bike Friday co-founders trip to Europe when Alan and Hanz Scholz Hanz discovered how poorly his then state-of-the-art travel bike performed. With a knack for bike design, he created a prototype that led to the production of the original Bike Friday in 1992. Bike Friday soon attracted enthusiasticreviewsfromcustomersandthe cycling press. Alan, who founded the Burley Design Cooperative in the late 1970s, joined his brother to produce what has become renowned as one of the world's leading performance travel bicycles. Why the Name Bike Friday? Bike Friday was named after Man Friday, Crusoes trusty companion in the novel Robinson Crusoe. Eventually the Bike Friday brand name became more recognized than the corporate company name, Green Gear Cycling. The name reminds us that like Robinson's friend, a Bike Friday is your trustytravelingcompanion, unobtrusiveyet always there, ready to transport you on your every adventurous whim! 2

I just nished a two-week self-contained tour in Iceland with my new Air Llama. The tour included more than 300 kilometers of unpaved rugged roads. My Air Llama performed beautifully on the road, on the dirt, through the rivers, and of course, at the airport. The custom t made long days in the saddle pleasurable (the sun didnt set so we didnt stop). I plan to explore the rest of the world with my Air Llama. - Sue Wenberg, DC, swdctucson@aol.com

Petite Pocket Crusoe Petite Air Friday Petite Pocket Rocket Pro
I have recently bought a Petite Pocket Rocket Pro. While on holiday with my family in Majorca I was tempted to race because my new bike just begged me to. I have not raced in 30 years and I really enjoyed it. Since I came back home I have ridden a 110 mile Audax at an average speed of 20.6 kms and it was a hilly event in Wales. If that is not love I dont know what is! My Pansy is the best bike I have ever owned. -Marion Guy, United Kingdom.
Petite Bike Fridays are designed proportionally for the smaller, lighter rider who wants a high performance bike that ts right. We can custom build a proportional bike for someone as small as 40 while taking into account smaller hands, and limbs. This is our steptowardsmakinggenuineperformancebikesthatsmaller, lighter riders deserve. The Petite Bikes also do everything our other Bike Fridays do. The Pocket models fold compactly in less than 30 seconds for easy transport by car, taxi, bus, train, boat or even private plane. With minimal disassembly, they pack into the optional Bike FridayFlite Case. Add the optional TravelTrailer kit, and you can tow your gear in the Bike Friday Flite Case as your touring trailer. Bike Friday Petite Series bike prices are similar to the standard-sized Pocket Rocket Pro, Air Friday and Crusoe. Want to know more? Greetings from Niue, reads Heinz Stckes latest postcard. Yesterday I rode a hundred km around the island. The Bike Friday works beautifully. Heinz, a 64-year-old native of Hvelhof, Germany, has been touring on a bicycle since 1962, an endeavor thats earned him the Guinness World Record for The Most Traveled Person by Bicycle. Heinz purchased a Bike Friday Pocket Llama this summer to help him achieve an even loftier Guinness title, that of The Most Traveled Man. Founders Message

I always look forward to this opportunity to share with you whats happening at Bike Friday. This has been a very busy year. I want to thank all of you for your tremendous referral efforts. This year has once again reminded us at Bike Friday that our customers play the biggest part in our success. Bike Friday has grown quite a bit in the past eight months and with that growth has come growing pains. For those of you that noticed the longer waits in service, please accept our thanks for your patience. Our service department has had some trouble keeping up with all your e-mail and phone requests. In some months this summer sales demand was up over 50% and our small crew was overwhelmed. We are excited to see the interest in Bike Friday grow this year as you bought your second and third bikes as well as brought your friends in Hanz, Lon Haldeman and Alan at the 2004 to buy their rst bikes. I want to extend special Desert camp thanks to all of you that took the time to email and call with your suggestions on how our systems and products here at Bike Friday could be improved. This feedback is critical to a small business going through the throes of transition from a tiny mom and pop bike builder to a larger enterprise. Our greatest challenge in transition is to keep the personal service that we all value. Its your feedback that keeps us on track. A bright spot out of all the chaos generated by growing is that Customer Service has improved its process considerably. They now have their own receptionist ve days a week (Tuesday through Saturday) and their own toll free number. Here is your direct line into service: 877-305-4140. Thank you again for making our work at Bike Friday fun and fullling. Best in Cycling, Alan Scholz, Co-Founder

Your Bike Friday: Not Just for Travel Anymore
What does Richard Vallens do on a Friday?
Did you know that signicantly more owners use their Bike Fridays for recreational riding than for traveling? This is just one of the many interesting tidbits we learned from a survey of our recent customers. Thank you to everyone who participated! Your information is already helping us improve and grow.
Family Tandem owner Richard Vallens wins a Toyota Prius, the grand prize in the international Lovemarks poll for his Bike Friday Love Letter. In the contest Bike Friday rose above numerous popular companies including Apple Computer, Harley Davidson, and amazon.com. Vallens concluded his acceptance speech by saying, Winning this contest is not about something I did, its about something Bike Friday does, and does every day. What they make is custom bicycles, almost all of which fold and go in a suitcase. What they market is enthusiasm, dreams of cycling in far off places, and a worldwide community of owners. And in the case of their Family Tandem that we own, they market precious moments with your children.Read more at bikefriday.com/bf/ lovemarks-winner

Greetings from Bulgaria, Country #100
by Betsy Schwartz One of the most adventurous of the 10,000+ BF owners, Betsy Schwartz travels the world for 6 months of the year, then spends the other 6 months as a schoolteacher showing kids her slides and talking of faraway places. With a job like that it is no wonder she has visited 100 countries and still counting. more often that not with her Crusoe called Pumpkin. Last night I met my rst American traveler in Bulgaria - an older gentleman from Florida. He was with his wife and four friends, introducing them to what he considers eastern Europes best kept secret. Roger has been a regular visitor for the last decade and asked me to encourage travelers to come to this small but wonderfully friendly country. Bulgarias two parallel mountain ranges have challenged the four of us a couple of times as we cross the country by bicycle. We have also delighted in the views and scents of Bulgarias beautiful valleys covered with wildowers, pink roses, vineyards, cherry trees with masses of the plump ripe red fruit blanketed beneath, and tobacco elds. Our adventure began in Bulgarias capital, Soa, a city of many gorgeous Eastern Orthodox churches and a population of more than 1 million. For the rst week of cycling, we had very cloudy skies, much cooler than I had thought, and we found ourselves daily trying to outrun the storms. For the most part we managed.

We stayed a couple of days at Koprivshtitsa, a national heritage village and home of the early revolutionaries, which has been preserved as an 19th century town. Mostly horse carts are Betsy and friend LillyAnn admire the wildowers in found clopping Bulgaria. around on these cobblestone roads. I spent three hours visiting a sixth grade English class in the village school. Chatting with the kids about my bicycle travels and teaching simple English songs appeared to be a pleasure for all of us. I am writing this letter sitting on a hotel rooftop. It is a much needed layover day today. The sun is hot, and the gulls are noisily ying overhead landing on many of the neighboring 5th to 14th century churches. Getting here, however, was a nightmare! Your bike chain:

Lubricating. Like your car needs oil for the engine to run smoothly, your bike chain needs lubricant for your gears to run smoothly. Proper chain care really extends the life of your chain. Regularly checking, lubricating and cleaning it helps extend its life, but other factors, such as using lubricants correctly, contribute as well. Many people these days are using self-cleaning lubricants such as White Lightning. These products claim to lubricate and keep dirt off your chain. In our experience here at BF headquarters these products can be chain killers if not used properly. They generally need to be applied by the hour not the week or month like a light oil. My rule of thumb is to apply self-cleaning lubricants every 50 miles on a dry day, more often on a wet day. When these dry lubes shed dirt, they do so by shedding the lube too. Its best to apply these lubes the night before riding to allow time for the solvent to evaporate. On the other hand, light oils like Phil Wood tend to stay on a long time, but attract dirt. Heavy rain, however, will displace these as well. For light oils, it is best to look at the chain before each ride and reapply if the chain looks dry. Wipe off the excess. I personally use Triow, which has some properties of both types. It has Teon suspended in light oil and gives some protection for a short period of time if the chain runs dry. I apply the oil on the top part of the link as it comes off the lower jockey wheel of the derailleur. This encourages the oil to move outward onto the cogs and chain rings. It requires very little oil, about one drop per link. I then spin the cranks backward for several revolutions to work in the oil and get some of the road gunk out. Next I run the chain through a terrycloth towel to remove excess oil from the outside of the chain where it would attract dirt. Replacing. Measure your chain regularly. Replacing your chain right before you actually need to will prevent you from having to replace cassette cogs and chain rings. If you let the chain wear, it stretches, putting more pressure on the teeth of the cogs and jockey wheels. Once this happens, a new chain will actually make the shifting worse as the new chain and cogs will no longer mesh correctly. You can get your chain checked at your local bike shop, or if you are a doit-yourselfer, you can buy a simple chain-length gauge. Most manufacturers recommend chain replacement at around 1000 miles. While this might be optimal, I think most people will get substantially more than that if they keep up maintenance on their chains. Not only the weather affects chain life. Other factors include rider weight, cargo weight (such as on a touring bike), and ruggedness of the terrain. All of these things put more stress on the chain than one would normally encounter on a ride through town. If you have problems that are keeping your bike from operating smoothly we encourage you to visit your local bike shop for a tune-up. The shops are typically quite happy for the business whether or not the bike was purchased through them. For more do-it-yourself tips, visit www.bikefriday.com/bf/chain Happy cycling!

Yosemite on an Air Friday
by Sandy Martin I just took my new Air Friday to a week long conference in Yosemite. I never would have paid to take my big bike, but the Air Friday checked as regular luggage so easily. Seeing the Yosemite Valley on a bicycle is just amazing, the steep cliffs are straight up on all sides of the valley. I saw mule deer and coyotes while biking. Yosemite Falls and Half Dome were more spectaular than any picture. My maiden voyage with my new bike, Venture, was a complete success! On my way up a hill to Mirror Lake at Yosemite National Park, I passed two guys on mountain bikes. They were really amazed that a WOMAN on that LITTLE BIKE could easily pass them. At the top, they asked a lot of questions about my Air Friday. I even biked from Fish Camp, 2 miles south of the south entrance to Yosemite, to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequioas, 4 miles further up mountain. People in cars passed me on the road, and they commented on my little bike and how well it climbed the mountain when I reached the Grove. I didnt run out of gears, just lungs!! But I made the 6 mile climb! Coming down, I was going as fast as the cars! Read more about the Air bikes (road, tour, mountain and tandem) and why theyre so popular at www.bikefriday.com/bf/airbikes.

by Walter Lapchynski, Travel Bike Consultant reward. The referral reward is $25 for a stock or pre-owned bike, $50 for a new single, and $100 for a new tandem. When Joes bike ships, youll get a thank you card that asks you what you want to do with your reward. You can have the money or leave it on account. If you choose the latter, youll get a 50% bonus (e.g. $75 for a new single). You can use this as a way to fund your next bike or get some spare parts. For many people its not about the money. Being able to help someone else nd the joy of a custom bike that they can take anywhere is a great reward. Often times, customers refer their friends. Done enough times over, weve seen whole Bike Friday clubs spring up this way around people referring their friends and acquaintances. Having like minded people to socialize and ride with is a wonderful reward. Helping people ride their bike more and helping us grow and improve as a company is certainly a huge reward. Referrals help support our business, which in turn, helps support our research, development, and service, and thats something even our rst Bike Friday owner would benet from. But we also want to give back. So if your motivation is primarily to help people get a great bike and/or help Bike Friday grow -- rather than to nance your next Bike Friday -- you may opt to have us donate your referral fee to our new non-prot recipient, the Adventure Cycling Association. The groups mission is to inspire and empower people to travel by bicycle. They offer resources including maps, routes, tours, instruction and training, events, and more to make this possible, to help fulll all manner of bicycle travel goals. So dont forget to bring those referral cards next time you ride your Friday. And remember that were happy to send you more cards any time. Contact us at 800-777-0258 or info@bikefriday. com, or jot a note on the next referral card you send us. Thanks for your support!

Katherine Roberts loves to spread the word about Bike Friday. (Note: Bike Friday strongly endorses use of a bike helmet)
When asked what has prompted her to refer over 90 people to Bike Friday, Crusoe and Pocket Llama owner Katherine Roberts replies, People ask about the bike. Theyre so curious about it. And I am happy to refer people because Bike Friday is such a great company. I know they will get great service and attention and make sure theyre satised. Sure its nice getting the rewards program perks, but its denitely not the only reason. I really believe in the product and the company. Ive even waived my credit for people who cant afford the bike. Long-time Pocket Rocket Pro owner Terry de Campo has a similar answer. Its a great bike. When my friends ask me what kind of bike they should get, I recommend Bike Friday. Its great for travel, can go anywhere, and is so convenient. You can use and enjoy it at any time. If I had to choose only one of my 10 bikes to keep, it would without a doubt be one of my Bike Fridays. We at Bike Friday developed our referral card to help Bike Friday owners like Katherine and Terry let other cyclists know about Bike Friday. The referral program benets everyone other cyclists get the bikes they need, you - the customer - get the recognition of helping, and we continue to grow as a company. We recently improved the card to ensure better followthrough. The format is still the same: a postage-paid postcard with prompts to collect contact information, attached to a card with a bit of Bike Friday information to give the other cyclist. Lets say you run into Joe on one of your rides and he asks about your Bike Friday. As the referrer, you write out Joes contact info and riding interests. Then you give Joe the upper informational portion and mail the lower portion. We found that if you gave Joe the whole card to ll out, it often ended up in his jersey pocket, then in the wash. So now you can participate in the referral program and feel more certain that Joe will be taken care of. Well get the card, associate you with Joe in our database, send him information, and contact him to try to help him purchase his bike. And upon Joes purchase, we express our gratitude to you with a

Winter cycling tip

Even at its January worst, cold weather shouldnt limit your riding. As youll hear the Scandinavians say, the weather isnt too cold, youre just underdressed! Tip: To lessen the effect of windchill, plan winter routes so you travel into the wind on the outward leg. Youll get the coldest part of the ride done early before your clothes become moist with sweat. When youre damp and getting tired, the frigid blasts will be at your back, blowing you home.
