BlackBerry power and radio settings
Power and radio settings on BlackBerry handhelds

Summary

This document discusses the behavior of the following options of BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds: Auto On/Off, Turn Wireless Off, and Power Off.

Auto On/Off

In the Options application, the user can set the handheld to turn on and turn off automatically at specific times on both weekdays and the weekend. At the specified turn off time, the handheld turns off the radio and LCD display and only acknowledges Alarm and Calendar notifications, which then turn on the handheld. Note: For the RIM 950 and RIM 957, the behavior of Auto On/Off was changed in version 2.1 of the handheld software to avoid spikes in network traffic at 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM and other common times that users specify for the handheld to turn on automatically. For these handhelds, Auto Off turns off message notification but leaves the radio turned on and also acknowledges Alarm and Calendar notifications. The additional power consumption is expected to be minimal, because these are largely inactive periods. Note the following safety information in the Installation and Getting Started Guide for the RIM 950 and RIM 957: Note that the Auto On/Off function on the handheld does not affect radio operation, and the radio remains on even when the handheld has been turned off by the Auto On/Off function. Before entering an area where radio devices are forbidden or may otherwise disrupt the operation of other equipment, ensure that the radio has been turned off by turning on your handheld and manually turning off the radio in the Home screen.

Turn Wireless Off

If, on the handheld Home screen, a user clicks the Turn Wireless Off (airplane) icon, the radio is turned off and no radio frequency (RF) is transmitted from the handheld. This feature can be used when the user is on an airplane, in a blasting area, in a hospital, or in other RF-sensitive situations. When the user clicks the Turn Wireless Off icon RF transmissions cease. This means that no wireless communication occurs between the handheld and the base stations, not even station keeping. The only RF transmissions from the handheld are very low and are accepted under the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) part 15 requirements.

Power Off

If, on the handheld Home screen, a user clicks the Power Off (power switch) icon, or the user holds down the silver key (only applicable to RIM 857 and RIM 957 handhelds), the handheld turns off completely, including the radio. Note: This functionality is present in BlackBerry software version 3.0 and later for the BlackBerry 5810 and BlackBerry 5820. TAE-00040-001

Roaming between North America and Europe with BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds

Summary

The BlackBerry solution enables roaming between wireless networks within both North America and Europe. This roaming will become increasingly seamless in 2002. However, until that system is in use, user and system administrator intervention is required to support roaming between North America and Europe.
Current roaming implementation
This roaming implementation requires the following conditions: BlackBerry Enterprise Server located in North America (either BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.1 for Microsoft Exchange or later OR BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.0 for Lotus Domino with Service Pack 2 or later) BlackBerry Enterprise Server located in Europe (either BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.1 for Microsoft Exchange or later OR BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.0 for Lotus Domino with Service Pack 2 or later) BlackBerry Wireless Handheld that is provisioned for use in North America (including the RIM 850, RIM 857, RIM 950, RIM 957, or BlackBerry 5810), with the appropriate cradle and desktop software BlackBerry 5820 Wireless Handheld, provisioned with a European network operator Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card, with the appropriate cradle and desktop software Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino mail server The following scenario assumes that you are starting in North America and travelling to Europe. The process is identical for the opposite scenario. 1. Inform your system administrator of your travel plans, so that the system administrator can move you from a BlackBerry Enterprise Server in North America to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server in Europe. Note: Users should also be moved to a Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino server in Europe to avoid overseas latency between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the Microsoft Exchange server or Lotus Domino server. Note: Users should only be moved when they depart for Europe because, as soon as they are moved, they are required to insert their BlackBerry handheld operating in Europe into the cradle (as described below) and they will not receive any email on their BlackBerry handheld operating in North America from that point forward. 2. Verify that the cradle is connected to your computer, and insert your BlackBerry handheld that is provisioned for use in North America into the cradle. 3. Back up the data from your BlackBerry handheld that is operating in North America to your computer:

1. On your computer, on the Start menu, select Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager. The BlackBerry Desktop Manager window appears. 2. Double-click the Backup and Restore icon. The Backup and Restore window appears. 3. Click Backup. The Select file for Full Backup window appears. 4. Click Save. The data on your handheld is saved on your computer. 4. After the backup process is complete, connect the cradle that is provisioned for use in Europe to your computer and insert the BlackBerry handheld that is provisioned for use in Europe into the cradle. 5. Restore the files from your computer to the BlackBerry handheld that is provisioned for use in Europe. 1. In the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, double-click the Backup and Restore icon. The Backup and Restore window appears. 2. Click Advanced. The Backup/Restore window appears. 3. On the File menu, click Open. The Open window appears. 4. Select the backup.ipd file that you created and click Open. The Backup/Restore window appears, with the files from the backup displayed. 5. In the Desktop File Databases section, select all the items in the list box. Note: If you are restoring files from a BlackBerry handheld that is provisioned for use in Europe (BlackBerry 5820) to a BlackBerry handheld that is provisioned for use in North America (RIM 850, RIM 857, RIM 950 or RIM 957), select all the items in the list box except for Folder Id, Options, and Searches. 6. Click the bottom right arrow button to transfer these files to your BlackBerry handheld that is provisioned for use in Europe. 7. After you transfer the files, click Close. You return to the Backup and Restore window. 8. Click Close. You return to the desktop manager. 9. Double-click the Intellisync icon. The Intellisync window appears. 10. In the Synchronize now section, select all three check boxes and click Synchronize now. Your handheld synchronizes with your computer. 6. After you arrive in Europe, you must register with the network to receive email messages. When you return to North America, you must perform the same steps. Note: Check with your service provider for information on GSM/GPRS roaming agreements or plans that might exist with other network operators throughout the world.
