About Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphones
You can use Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphones to chat with other Windows Live Messenger users from your BlackBerry smartphone. To use Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphones, you must have a Windows Live ID. For more information about Windows Live Messenger, visit get.live.com/messenger/overview.
Sign in to Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphone
1. 2. 3. 4. On the Home screen or in the application list, click Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphones. Type your Windows Live ID and password. Set the Domain field for the user name that you typed. Click Sign in.
To sign out, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Sign out.
Change your display name or display picture
1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > My Info. To change your display name, type a name. To change your display picture, press the Menu key. Click Change Display Picture. Click a picture. If necessary, center the picture in the box. Press the Menu key > Crop and Save. 2. Press the Menu key > Save.
About sound profiles
You can set notification options, such as vibrate or tone, for Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphones in the sounds application. The Windows Live Messenger Alert item specifies how you are notified when a contact that you have set an availability notification for becomes available. The Windows Live Messenger New Message item specifies how you are notified of incoming Windows Live Messenger messages. Depending on the sound profile that is set in the sounds application on your smartphone, you might not hear the audible notification that you have set for Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry smartphones. For more information about sounds, click the Help icon on the Home screen of your BlackBerry smartphone.

Availability
About your status
Your status is made up of a status indicator and a status message. You can create a custom status by typing your own status message and choosing a status indicator.
Change your status
If you change your status to offline, your contacts cannot send you messages. 1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > My Info. 2. Change the Status field.
Add a status message
1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > My Info. 2. Type a status message. 3. Press the Menu key > Save.
Show when you are on a call
Depending on your wireless network, this feature might not be supported. 1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > My Info. 2. Select the Show When I'm On The Phone check box. 3. Press the Menu key > Save. To stop showing when you are on a call, clear the Show When I'm On The Phone check box.
Receive notification when a contact is online
You can receive a message when the contact is online. Depending on the sound profile that is set on your smartphone, you might also receive an audible notification. 1. On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight an offline contact. 2. Press the Menu key > Alert Me > OK.

Add a contact
1. 2. 3. 4. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Add a Contact. Type an email address. Click OK. To link the contact with a contact in the contacts application, perform one of the following actions: If the contact is already in the contacts application, click Select Contact. Click a contact. If the contact is not yet in the contacts application, click New Contact. Type the contact information. Press the Menu key > Save.
View a contact's information
1. On the contact list screen, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > Contact Info.
Link a contact with a contact in the Contacts application
When you link a contact with a contact in the Contacts application, you might be able to perform additional tasks. For example, during a conversation, you might be able to call or send an email message to the contact quickly from the menu. 1. On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > Link to BlackBerry Contact. If the contact is already in the Contacts application, click Select Contact. Click a contact. If the contact is not yet in the Contacts application, click New Contact. Type the contact information. Press the Menu key > Save.
Delete a contact
1. On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > Delete Contact > Delete.
Block a contact
If you block a contact, you appear as offline in that contact's contact list. 1. On the contact list screen, in a contact group, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > Block Contact. To unblock a contact, click Unblock Contact.
View blocked contacts
1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Options. 2. Change the Show Blocked Contacts field to Yes. 3. Press the Menu key > Save. To hide blocked contacts again, change the Show Blocked Contacts field to No.
Organize offline contacts
1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Options. To group offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to Group. To hide offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to No. To view offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to Yes. 2. Press the Menu key > Save.
A contact no longer appears in my contact list
Try performing the following actions: If you have changed options to hide offline contacts, organize offline contacts so that you can view offline contacts. If you have collapsed the group that the contact is in, expand the group. On the contact list screen, click the group.
Conversations
Send a message
1. On the contact list screen, click an online contact. 2. Type a message. 3. Press the Enter key.
Add an emoticon
1. When you are composing a message, press the Menu key > Add Smiley. 2. Click an emoticon.
Send a file to a contact
If your BlackBerry smartphone is associated with an email account that uses a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you might be able to send files that are stored on your organization's network. For more information about accessing a file from your organization's network, click the Help icon on the Home screen of your smartphone. 1. On the contact list screen, highlight an online contact. 2. Press the Menu key > Send File. To send a picture, click Picture. Click a picture. To send a document, click File. Click a file. To send a voice note, click Voice Clip > Start. Record your message. Click Send. To send a contact attachment, click Contact. Click a contact.
Add another contact to the conversation
1. During a conversation, press the Menu key > Invite. 2. Click a contact.
View a list of conversation participants
During a conversation, press the Menu key > View Participants.
Email a conversation
Depending on your wireless service plan, this feature might not be supported. During a conversation, press the Menu key > Email Conversation.
Copy a conversation
During a conversation, press the Menu key > Copy Conversation.
Clear a conversation
During a conversation, press the Menu key > Clear Conversation.
Switch conversations
1. During a conversation, press the Menu key > Switch Conversation. 2. Click a contact.
End a conversation
During a conversation, press the Menu key > End Conversation.
Prevent conversations from appearing in the messages application
1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Options. 2. Change the Show Conversations in Messages Application field to No. 3. Press the Menu key > Save. To view conversations in the messages application again, change the Show Conversations in Messages Application field to Yes.
Stop grouping messages in conversations
In a conversation, by default, consecutive messages that you send or receive are grouped together. 1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Options. 2. Change the Group Sequential Messages in Conversations field to No. 3. Press the Menu key > Save.
I am not receiving notification for incoming messages
In the sounds application, try performing the following actions: Verify that the All Alerts Off sound profile is not selected. Verify that the Volume fields for the Windows Live Messenger item are not set to Silent. Change the notification options for the Windows Live Messenger New Message item.
Text sometimes changes after I type it
If AutoText recognizes specific text, it is designed to replace the text that you type with the AutoText entry automatically. To view or change AutoText entries, during a conversation, press the Menu key > Edit AutoText. For more information about AutoText, click the Help icon on the Home screen of your BlackBerry smartphone.
Conversation history
Turn on conversation history
1. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key > Options. 2. Change the Save Message History field to Device or Media Card. 3. Press the Menu key > Save.
View the conversation history for a contact
You can only perform this task if you have previously turned on conversation history. 1. On the contact list screen, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > View History. 3. Click a conversation history.
Search for text in a conversation history
You can only perform this task if you have previously turned on conversation history. 1. On the contact list screen, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > View History. 3. Type the text. 4. Click Search. 5. In the search results, click a conversation history.
Delete a conversation history
You can only perform this task if you have previously turned on conversation history. 1. On the contact list screen, highlight a contact. 2. Press the Menu key > View History. 3. Press the Menu key. To delete the conversation history for an individual contact, click Delete Contact's History. To delete the conversation history for all contacts, click Delete Complete History.

You can use Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices to chat with other Windows Live Messenger users from your BlackBerry device. To use Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices, you must have a Windows Live ID. For more information about Windows Live Messenger, visit get.live.com/messenger/overview. You can send and receive email messages and use other applications on your device while the Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices application is running. When you receive a new instant message, an indicator appears in the device status section of the screen.

About contacts
The contact list displays your individual contacts, or Windows Live Messenger users. Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices uses your existing contacts from your Windows Live Messenger account.
Add a contact
1. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Add a Contact. 3. In the email address field, perform one of the following actions: Type an email address. Type part of the name for a contact in the main contact list on your BlackBerry device. Click a contact name. 4. Click OK. 5. To associate the contact with a contact in the main contact list on your BlackBerry device, perform one of the following actions: If the contact is in your main contact list, click Select Contact. Click an email address. If the contact is not in your main contact list, click New Contact. Type the contact information. Click the trackwheel. Click Save.
View a contact's information
1. On the Contact list screen, highlight a contact. 2. Click the trackwheel. 3. Click Contact Info.
Associate a contact with a contact in the main contact list on your BlackBerry device
You can associate a contact with a contact in your main contact list who has an email address, phone number, or both. You can then call or send an email message to the contact quickly during a conversation. 1. On the Contact list screen, highlight a contact. 2. Click the trackwheel. 3. Click Link to BlackBerry Contact. 4. Perform one of the following actions: If the contact is in your main contact list, click Select Contact. Click an email address. If the contact is not in your main contact list, click New Contact. Type the contact information. Click the trackwheel. Click Save.
Delete a contact
1. In a contact group, highlight a contact.
Block a contact
2. Click the trackwheel. 3. Click Delete Contact.
If you block a contact, you appear as offline in that contact's contact list. 1. In a contact group, highlight a contact. 2. Click the trackwheel. 3. Click Block Contact. To unblock a contact, click Unblock Contact.
View blocked contacts
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. Click Options. Change the Show Blocked Contacts field to Yes. Click the trackwheel. Click Save.
To unblock a contact, highlight a contact. Click the trackwheel. Click Unblock.
Organize offline contacts
1. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Options. 3. Perform one of the following actions: To group offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to Group. To hide offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to No. To view offline contacts, change the Show Offline Contacts field to Yes. 4. Click the trackwheel. 5. Click Save.
A contact no longer appears in my contact list
Try performing the following actions: If you have set your client to hide offline contacts, organize offline contacts so that you can view offline contacts. If you have collapsed the group that the contact is in, expand the group. On the Contact list screen, highlight the group. Click the trackwheel.
Conversations
Send a message
1. 2. 3. 4. On the Contact list screen, click an online contact. Click Send Message. Type a message. Press the Enter key.
Open a conversation
Conversations appear in the conversation group and in the main message list on your BlackBerry device. 1. In the conversation group, click a contact. 2. Click Open Conversation.
Add an emoticon
1. When you are composing a message, press the Symbol key. 2. Press the Symbol key multiple times until the emoticons appear. 3. Click an emoticon.
Prevent conversations from appearing in the main message list
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. Click Options. Change the Show Conversations in Message List field to No. Click the trackwheel. Click Save.
Switch conversations
1. During a conversation, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Switch Conversation. 3. Click a contact.
Call or send an email message to a contact quickly during a conversation
To perform this task, the contact must be associated with a contact in the main contact list on your BlackBerry device. During a conversation, perform any of the following actions: Click the trackwheel.Click Call <Contact Name>. Click the trackwheel.Click Email <Contact Name>.
Send a conversation as an email message
1. During a conversation, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Email Conversation.
Copy a conversation
1. During a conversation, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Copy Conversation.
Clear a conversation
1. During a conversation, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Clear Conversation.
End a conversation
1. During a conversation, click the trackwheel. 2. Click End Conversation.
Start a conference
1. 2. 3. 4. During a conversation, click the trackwheel. Click Invite. Click a contact. Click OK.
View a list of conference participants
1. During a conference, click the trackwheel. 2. Click View Participants.
Stop grouping messages in conversations
In a conversation, by default, consecutive messages that you send or receive are grouped together. 1. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Options. 3. Change the Group Messages In Conversation field to No. 4. Click the trackwheel. 5. Click Save.
I am not receiving notification for incoming messages
Try performing any of the following actions: In the profile list, click the active notification profile. Change the notification option for the Windows Live Messenger New Message item to Tone, Vibrate, or Vibrate+Tone. In the profile list, for the active notification profile, verify that the Volume fields for the Windows Live Messenger item are not set to Mute.
Text sometimes changes after I type it
If AutoText recognizes specific text, it is designed to replace the text that you type with the AutoText entry automatically. 1. To view or change AutoText entries, during a conversation, click the trackwheel. 2. Click Edit AutoText. For more information about AutoText, click Help on your BlackBerry device.
Conversation history
View the conversation history for a contact
To perform this task, on the Options screen, the Save Message History field must be set to save conversations on your BlackBerry device or on a media card. 1. 2. 3. 4. On the Contact list screen, highlight a contact. Click the trackwheel. Click View History. Click a conversation history.
Delete a conversation history
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. On the Contact list screen, highlight a contact. Click the trackwheel. Click View History. Click the trackwheel. Perform one of the following actions: To delete the conversation history for an individual contact, click Delete Contact's History. To delete the conversation history for all contacts, click Delete Complete History.
Availability
Change your availability status
1. At the top of the Contact list screen, click your user name. 2. Click an availability status. Note: If you change your availability status to offline, your contacts cannot send you messages.
Create a custom status message
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. Click My Status. Click Personal message. Type a status message. Click OK.
Delete your custom status message
1. On the Contact list screen, click the trackwheel. 2. Click My Status. 3. Click Clear personal message.
Receive notification when a contact becomes available
1. 2. 3. 4. On the Contact list screen, highlight an offline contact. Click the trackwheel. Click Alert Me. Click OK.
About notification profiles
In the profile list, you can set notification options such as vibrate or tone for Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices messages. The Windows Live Messenger Alert notification profile specifies how you are notified when a contact becomes available. The Windows Live Messenger New Message notification profile specifies how you are notified of incoming Windows Live Messenger messages.
Change a notification profile
1. In the profile list, click Advanced. 2. Click a notification profile. 3. Click Edit.
4. Change the notification profile. 5. Click the trackwheel. 6. Click Save.
