Congratulations on your purchase of Blaupunkts ProComponent speakers! We at Blaupunkt feel that these components are of the highest value available on the market today. The performance, reliability, and installation flexibility is unequaled. Unlike radios and amplifiers, speaker technology is more evolutionary than revolutionary. Incremental improvements are usually implemented with materials change or minor design. Using Blaupunkts EXP Extended Pole Design we are able to make substantial jumps in linear excursion and power handling.
KEY COMPONENT FEATURES The ProComponent sets offer tremendous performance because of well thought out designs focusing on performance and ease of installation. Key features include: n Very high power handling and low distortion for the woofer due to the Extended Pole design. n High power handling for the tweeter through the use of Neodymium magnets and a circuit-breaker type poly-switch that opens the circuit to the tweeter if over- driven. n Resin-laminated woofer cones to maintain rigidity and resistance to moisture. n Easy installation via multiple mounting systems for the tweeter. n 12 dB/Octave linear phase crossovers n Color and mechanically keyed wiring to ensure proper phase and reliable connections. n High efficiency

The extended pole design offers a longer symmetrical magnetic field compared to a conventional flush type pole.

EXTENDED POLE DESIGN In a conventional flush type pole piece the asymmetrical flux distribution through the voice coil prevents linear motion throughout the voice coil travel. The EXP design creates a symmetric magnetic field resulting in longer linear travel of the voice coil which yields lower distortion. Also, there is additional control at the excursion limits thus offering higher power handling. The music can now play louder, longer, and with less risk in burning out your woofers.
Because of the longer linear travel, power handling and tonal quality are improved dramatically.
We recommend you have your Blaupunkt speakers professionally installed but the installation process is often so easy that the average consumer can make a successful installation with little trouble. BUT, great care must be taken to ensure the safety of the installer and the vehicle. To ensure such safety you should do the following: 1. READ THE MANUAL! Understand the product and installation before beginning. 2. WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES! 3. PROTECT THE VEHICLE! Always disconnect the negative battery cable before starting any installation work. This prevents high current shorts (i.e., potential fires) 4. VERIFY AN UNOBSTRUCTED INSTALL! Before cutting any trim components or drilling holes, make sure there are no electrical wires, fuel or fluid lines, or structural metal members hidden from view. 5. DO NOT LISTEN AT HIGH LEVELS FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME! If connected to 25 watt amplifiers or higher, most car speakers in this performance level can cause permanent hearing loss if listened to over several hours at maximum power.
Before ripping apart the interior of your beautiful new car you need some basic installation knowledge and skill with common hand and power tools. 1. CHECK YOUR PARTS! Completely empty the box ensuring all parts are accounted for and_ you have a clear visual understanding of the components. 2. GIVE YOURSELF LOTS OF TIME! Back-tracking to find problems after the installation can often be avoided by moving slowly and carefully through the installation process. 3. READ THIS MANUAL! Read aJ of this manual to ensure an optimum performance and reliability. 4. TAKE CARE IN DISASSEMBLING THE VEHICLE! Every manufacturer uses slightly different construction mqthods. Take special care in removing trim and door panels since they often use unique screws or snap fasteners.
For most installations, simple hand tools are adequate if replacing the factory speakers. If the factory locations are not used power tools for drilling and cutting will likely be needed. A good starting list is the following: Marking pen and starting punch Tape measure or ruler Phillips and flat blade screwdrivers (small and medium sizes) Wire cutters, and wire strippers, and electrical tape Standard size vice-style pliers and needle nosed pliers Light duty trim type pry bar Cutting shears or nibbling tool (for cutting metal) Crimping pliers and appropriate crimp-on spade terminals Power drill with appropriate sized drill bits (118 and 114 as a start) Electnc jig-saw (saber-saw)

SOUND QUALITY.A good audio system will faithfully reproduce the original recording by offering accurate frequency response and staging. Good frequency response reproduces high tones such as symbols, through human voices and most instruments, and down to the very low tones from synthesizers and drums. Frequency response includes timbre (the accurate replication of an instrument), linearity (the tonal quality is the same regardless of volume level), and c/&v (lack of distortion of the original signal). Blaupunkt speakers address these properties by having a very smooth frequency response with low distortion levels. Good staging offers the illusion of a stage upon which players are located and it has a sense of height, width, and depth. Imaging is a sound systems ability to correctly place the instruments on the imaginary stage. Again, the Blaupunkt speakers excel here due to angled tweeter mounting and smooth off-axis frequency response ensuring accurate reproduction. LOUDNESS It is fairly easy to build a sound system that plays loud but has very poor tonal accuracy. This is done by simply placing lots of amplifiers and subwoofers in a car without attention to midrange and high frequency speakers and ignoring their positioning. But, with some basic attention to design, a loud system can also play accurately. In most vehicles, 50 watts per satellite speaker (midrange/tweeter) and 100 watts into 2 subwoofers will provide nearly 120 decibels across the audio spectrum of 20-20,000 Hz. This is the threshold of instantaneous permanent hearing loss so it is useless (and dangerous) to add much more than 400 watts of system power.
MOUNTING SPEAKERS IN BOXES We often receive calls from people wanting to install their speakers into custom made boxes. We whole heattedly support this concept since the box provides an acoustical air-spring for the woofer thus lowering distortion and increasing power handling compared to that of a free-air installation in a car door. These volumes are dictated by the speakers Thiele-Small parameters which are noted in the TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS section of this manual. Since the Qts values are all around 0.70 for this family of speakers, a sealed box is the ONLY recommended enclosure design. It must be understood that a supplementary subwoofer is needed for music below 100 Hz. Please note the attached table for recommended box volumes and dimensions for best performance.

WHAT IS SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE? System architecture is simply the design strategy used to assemble the radio, speakers, and any additional amplifiers in order to maximize the overall system performance. Is the system two-way or three-way? Are the crossovers passive or active? Are the amplifiers being operated in bridge mode or stereo mode? All of these questions are answered in the outline diagram of the system. A completely passive system can often sound as good as a completely active one if care is taken in the component choice, speaker location choice, and the final installation. Rarely is a 4x20 watt receiver and four coaxial speakers going to provide an impressive performance. By moving to some good component speakers for the mids and highs (satellite speakers) and adding a separate subwooofer speaker, overall performance is areatlv improved. Noted below are a couple of popular satellife/subwoofer systems that can tremendously improve the performance but with reasonable cost and complexity. ADD-ON COMPONENTSlSUBWOOFERS Changing to component speakers for the mids and highs greatly improves the tonal quality and imaging over simple factory speaker installations. In most cases, the factory radio with its 4x20 watts is adequate for these components. Also, the factory radio may be installed in a cosmetically non-removable fashion so this approach will solve many

installation problems.

Passive X-over Receiver (4x20 W)
Even with the addition of the component speakers the sonic impact of a system is often dictated by the low frequency response. By adding a subwoofer and a basic 100 watt amplifier the low end performance can now offer the complementary wow effect of the bass to the sonic accuracy of the component speakers.

Amplifier (1x100 W)

Subwoofer
m Tuner MULTI-CHANNEL I HIGH POWER Moving up to a 4x50 watt satellite channel amplifier powering four sets of components and a 2x100 watt subwoofer amplifier powering 2 subwoofers can offer stunning performance! The increase in amplifier power helps reduce clipping which yields a cracking type of sound which can damage nearly any speaker over time. The tonal accuracy of the system is also often improved because the amplifiers are no longer strained at high listening levels. Sub Amplifier (2x100 w) Subwoofers
MOUNTING COMPONENT SPEAKERS The prime objectives of component speaker mounting are: q Positioning the speakers correctly q Mounting them to a solid surface q Making sure there are no air leaks between the front and back of the woofer cone n Protecting the speakers q Ensuring the wiring is correct The lower the frequencies a speaker reproduces, the more solid its mounting surface must be. This is necessary because a vibrating panel winds up acting like another loudspeaker and introduces its own sound into the car. This secondary sound can severely degrade the sound of the music yielding a muffled or howling sound at certain listeninglevels. A good air seal isolating the sound from the back of the speaker from the front wave sound is critical. Lack of a good air seal reduces the bass response and often creates a hollow sound from the woofer. The tweeters mounting is not nearly so critical since it does not require a rear air seal and it vibrates very little.

WIRING Your ProComponent series speakers have crossovers with wires which are clearly marked regarding input (RED), tweeter output (YELLOW), and the woofer output (GREEN). Proper electrical phasing is maintained by electrically keyed terminals using narrow and wide spade terminals. The crossover network is optimized for use with these tweeters. If you prefer an active crossover network, the lowest crossover point should be 4.0 kHz and with 12 dB/octave high-pass. Speaker wiring should be isolated from the electrical system of the car and routed away from any factory systems to avoid potential noise pickup. If installing these speakers in combination with other speakers make sure that the combined impedances cannot damage the amplifier or radio.

SYSTEM TEST Once the system is installed, turn on the audio system power and SLOWLY turn up the volume while playing a favorite music track. n If the signal is heavily distorted or the music occasionally drops out check for short circuits of wires to other wires or to the chassis of the car. n If nothing is heard at all but the power lights come on, check all connections between the radio and speaker. n If the radio or amp does not turn on at all, contact your Blaupunkt dealer for help or the Blaupunkt Technical support at l-800-266-2528.
INSTALLING THE WOOFERS IN FACTORY LOCATIONS Most of todays newer cars have speaker grilles which blend in aesthetically with the interior of the car. The grille is usually held in with small screws or spring clips. To remove a clipped on grille, gently pry up on the side with a flat blade screwdriver. (Some grilles are an integral part of the door such that the entire door panel must be removed to expose the speaker.) Once the factory speaker is exposed, remove the hardware and replace the factory unit with the new Blaupunkt unit. INSTALLING THE WOOFERS IN NON-FACTORY LOCATIONS If you choose to install your new Blaupunkt speakers in locations other than the factory locations make certain the new location is clear of obstructions in front of (e.g., armrests, window cranks) and behind the speaker (e.g., door wiring, sheet metal). Once the location is chosen, carefully cut the hole (using the cutout sizes at the back of the manual), install the crossover in a convenient location, route and connect all wires, mount the speaker, install the grille, and reinstall any panels and/or factory components.

DOOR MOUNTING Door locations are most often favored because of the tonal quality and imaging advantages they provide compared to the typical dash locations. Unfortunately the woofer is forced into the very bottom of most doors because of space constraints. This low woofer installation creates a dilemma because the tweeter should be kept close to the woofer to maintain a unified sound field but this often places the tweeter firing into the legs of the passengers therefore high frequencies are lost. If the tweeter is too high (at the top of the door) the listener is overwhelmed with high frequencies and the left/right balance is damaged; therefore accurate imaging is lost. Optimally, a balance must be achieved with location which can often be found with the tweeter just above knee Ieve! in most automobiles. This will provide good frequency response and imaging REAR DECK MOUNTING Rear deck or sail panel installations are easily accommodated with these speakers since the woofers can often drop into factory holes or may require a simple adaptor plate which can be purchased or formed from wood. The surface mount tweeter assembly does not require any significant holes so a factory look can be maintained in most cases.
The biggest advantage of component speakers is their ability, when properly installed, to provide a tonally accurate sound with a wide sound stage but pinpoint localization of performers. The largest impact over this sound stage is provided by the tweeter location and mounting angle. To determine this optimal location and angle we recommend a simple experiment. 1. Complete all of the installation except for the tweeters (i.e, woofers, crossover, and wiring). 2. Have a friend sit in the passengers seat while you sit in the drivers seat, each holding a tweeter up to the door. 3. With music having good high frequency content, move the tweeters around listening for the best high frequency response yet maintaining a good left/right acoustical balance in the car. Mounting the tweeters mid level and as far forward in the door panel is often the best acoustical location in most cars. In most cases, the preferred location usually has the tweeters facing the opposite occupant in the car. The tweeter can now be mounted in one of the following four methods.

FLUSH MOUNT This mount looks as though it is styled into the car. The listeners are still slightly off-axis from the tweeter so high frequency response suffers slightly. A hole must be drilled to accommodate the flush cup. A screw run in from the back and through the spring clip is necessary to ensure a solid lifetime fit.

1.1 In (143 mm)

ANGLE FLUSH MOUNT Acoustically and aesthetically, this is the BEST mounting system. The tweeter is angled at the opposite occupant in the car. Like the flush cup, a hole must be drilled to accommodate the cup. The spring clip is attached with the screw as shown.
SURFACE MOUNT This method is used in installations where room is not available behind the tweeter to drill a mounting hole for a flush type cup. For this mounting method, a hole is drilled for both the wires and mounting screw. A rear spring clip is not necessary but a small backing washer is recommended to ensure that the screw will not pull through the door panel over time. ANGLE SURFACE MOUNT Angling the tweeter puts the acoustical output of the tweeter pointing more at the listeners which give better high frequency response. Like the flat surface mount above, holes must be drilled for the wires and screw. This mount is unique since the Cup is mounted to the panel with the bolt 8 nut, and the tweeter is then snaooed to the cup.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AND INSTALLATION @k?#&>@! To avoid the aggravation of costly mistakes and serious damage that could make you feel this way. please carefully read all of the instructions before you begin. Youll
be glad you did! GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS If youre not confident that you can install the unit correctly, have it installed by a qualified Blaupunkt installation technician. Use this unit only with negative ground 12 Volt (11-16 Volt) direct current (DC). l Be sure to detach the faceplate before you start to connect or install the unit. l If you use the units connector with or without an adapter, make sure that function of the leads (wires) of the connector match the function of the leads in the mating connectors! - If your vehicles radio wire harness is not compatible with this units harness connector, you can either a. buy an adapter harness at a car audio store -or- b. cut off the units connector and use a different type of connection. l We recommend making and testing all electrical connections before installing the unit. Connect the leads (wires) according to instructions and diagram below unless the speakers or amplifiers manual states that this is O.K.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION INSTRUCTfONS Disconnect the vehicle batterys negative terminal before making connections. : Before any other connections are made, you must first connect the antenna in order to avoid damage from mis, viring. 3 Connect speakers following the guidelines in the SPEAKER CONNECTION section below. 4. Connect the black (power ground) lead to a grounded metal part on the vehicle. We recommend grounding all audio system black ground leads (head unit, CD changer, etc.) to a common
grounding point, preferably a non-painted surface under the instrument panel. Connect the yellow (constant power) input lead to a source of constant battery power, preferably a terminal to an appropriate slot in the fuse box. Connect the red (turn-on power) input lead only after the other leads are connected. Be sure to connect the red lead to a positive (+) 12 Volt power terminal that is energized only when the ignition key is set to the on position or accessory position. 7 Cover the ends of any unused leads with electrical tape.
