Jim Jacisin, President In this column, the last of 2004, I ask for a presidential holiday indulgence, if you please. to use this as a thank you card and a holiday card. The Thank You card goes the outgoing Board of Directors Officers and Coordinators - for the tireless work they have provided to the Chicago Region. And thanks also to everyone who volunteered any time and talent to make this the finest PCA Region in all of America. From golf balls to baseballs, from ice cream cones in Elkhart Lake to orange Autocross cones at a driving school, from Rallye instructions to Concours scoring logs, it has been quite a year. Thank you all for participating. The daunting task of licking 1,653 stamps was not appealing, no matter what the flavor. Please consider this the Holiday Card you would be receiving from the Jacisin Family. Presidential privilege. The outside cover is up to your imagination. It could be a turn-ofthe-last-century Currier & Ives winter wonderland scene. Or it might be palm trees with colorful holiday lights attached. Or it could even be a brand new Ocean Blue Metallic 997 Carrera S with a Savannah Beige full leather interior with sport seats, a six-speed gear box, 19 inch rims over yellow ceramic brakes and a sweep second hand turning on the dash mounted chronograph, as the car challenges the switchbacks outside of Lake Tahoe. (I guess you know what I want Santa to leave for me on Christmas Day!). Make a wish, pick your favorite scene done. The inside of our holiday card reads: May your troubles be less, your blessings be more, and for the new year, nothing but happiness come through your door. Stay safe, be well, happy holidays. James Drury The sun rose over Naperville on Sunday September 26, 2004 with abundant sunshine. Concours participates stuck their collective heads outside and said it would be a good day to drive and show their cars. 36 cars showed up. 2 or 3 first timers and one brand new club member brought out his 911SC. The 911SC was a huge hit. So huge that Van Larson offered to buy the car on the spot. Pat Yanahan brought out his 356. In fact their were three 356s entered. George Biskup brought out his 04 911GT-3. Bruce Janecek brought out his BMW and showed pictures of his 911. We were not outclassed by the plethora of Vipers along side of us. One Viper had a rather nasty license plate frame that read Porsches for Lunch, Ferraris for dinner. I want to thank Mike Milhouse and all the other Porsche club members who drove a go kart in the Naperville Grand Prix. And thanks to everyone who brought out their car.

Dave Youngblut The October Fall Rallye Run to New Glarus, Wisconsin das Bergrennen - was without a doubt the best Rallye event Ive attended since joining the Chicago Region PCA 3 years ago. This was only the 4th rallye my wife and I have participated in, and this time, everything clicked. The run was great, we finally felt like we knew what we were doing, and the camaraderie was special. And, the dinner commentary by a 3rd party was truly memorable (more on that later.) The run began Saturday morning in South Beloit and consisted of 12 cars and the hard working organizers and checkpoint workers. Weather was somewhat dismal with overcast skies and blustery winds. Despite the conditions, it took little away from our high spirits and the spectacular fall colors that we were able to view enroute to our luncheon stop in Monroe, WI. Monroe just happens to be my wifes hometown, so it was especially fun for us. Lunch itself was at the Suiss Haus, a Monroe institution. This charming bar/restaurant has been serving beer with great burgers, chili, and sandwiches for many generations of both local residents and weekend visitors. Several rallyers ordered a local specialty liverwurst and onion sandwiches on rye. Word to the wise: during lunch one of our members pointed out that eating liverwurst in excess could cause gout. I dont think Ill have to worry. Then, we hit the road again for the next leg of the rallye. Rallye organizers and checkpoint workers deserve a huge thank you for their work this afternoon! Freshly tarred and pebbled roads made it challenging to keep moving at the targeted average speed. Cool winds had checkpoint workers holding onto signs and clipboards for dear life. And at one checkpoint, we stopped

for a while to make sure everyone was there and not lost. We watched for our tractor signs, tried to decide if we should turn on Balls Mill Rd, and worked on keeping our average speed on track. We arrived in New Glarus by 4:00 and had plenty of time to walk around the town, check out the bakery, find little Porsche cars at an antique store, have a beer at Puempels Tavern, hit the swimming pool, or get in a quick nap. The Wisconsin Purdue game captured the attention of quite a few. We opted for a beer and a walk. Dinner was at the Chalet Landhaus Inn. All the menu choices were great and the waitresses kept bringing steaming plates of roesti potatoes and spatzle. During

dinner we had a chance to help Jack Stephensen celebrate his 50th birthday. He got the typical gifts (like Depends) that everyone needs as they make the transition from middle age to senior citizenry. While we were singing Happy Birthday, next door was another celebration: a wedding. As the wedding party passed by the entrance of our dining room, several requests were called out. Someone asked the bride if we could take her picture with Jack. Someone else asked the bride, Come in so we can see your dress. The bride agreed to the picture but misunderstood the second request, declining to let everyone see her (insert a female body part that sort of rhymes with dress!) Sunday morning was clear and sunny and the 2nd day got off to
a smooth start. The route led us through some truly charming rural roads. A missing road sign had Tom Harwood standing in the middle of the road directing traffic so we wouldnt miss a tricky intersection, but we all made it to Hansons Tavern for the rallye end. So what made this rallye so much fun? First, there were enough tricks in the rallye to make it fun, but it wasnt so hard that we felt overwhelmed. The rural roads selected were just great plenty of fall color and interesting things to see, with just enough opportunities to let the car take a few curves. The pace of the 2 day drive was just about right. We met some new Porsche club members. And of course, its always great fun to take the Porsche for a ride on a beautiful day.
The rallye season for 2004 has come to an end. In addition to the rallye school rallye, we had five competitive rallyes this year. We want to thank everyone who was a Rallye Master, a checkpoint worker, sweep car, and last but not least, everyone who participated in the competitive part of the event. Without everyones support and participation we would not have enjoyed such a productive year. We look forward to continuing our rallye program in the Chicago Region in 2005. After examining the spare (photo below), theoretically, I could do the switch replacement myself. If I had the time. Which I dont. So I called the northwest suburban Porsche dealer where Ive had very good maintenance results to schedule an appointment. Expecting at least a one week lead time when I called, Scott, the Service Manager stepped up. Was tomorrow soon enough? He even joked about the problem: Parking Brake microswitch failure?? NEVER heard of that happening (snicker). So, off I went. I barely had time to sit in the waiting area when they told me the car was ready - it took more time driving to and from the dealership than it took to do the repair (plus a gas cap replacement that had been nagging me for a few weeks) but thats a COMPLIMENT, not a complaint. Lost in Las Vegas Whoever wrote about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was all wet unless they were behind

the wheel of a car at rush hour or any weekend. Vegas is a kooky place. The Strip looks just like any big city downtown. I say looks like, because its an optical illusion. The buildings do indeed have a grand city look, but their scale is 5x. Or 10x. Walking the length of 1 block on the Vegas Strip can take 10 minutes or more. So, theres a strong temptation to get a car. A temptation fed by the exotic car rental vendors that dot the Strip and nearby. For instance: Dream Car Rentals, smack dab in the middle of the Strip had a Porsche Boxster available for 5 hours for $200 or 24 hrs for $249 (including 100 free miles!). Just off the Strip, RAV Exotic Car Rental (formerly Rent-a-Vette) had a Porsche Boxster S for $34 per hour, $269 per day or $1350 per week (each with 100 free miles per day). Temptation, however, is quickly tempered by traffic. Big Traffic. Unless you plan on LEAVING Las Vegas (quickly) with your rented Boxster, you neednt worry about exceeding that 100 mile per day allowance. I expect that the rush hour or anytime Saturday or Sunday commute time from one end of the Strip to the other is approximately 8 hours. Even the cabs we took were cutting through back alleys, backstreets, and parking lots to avoid the parking lot formally known as Las Vegas Boulevard. For reference purposes, it took 35

recent memory, I flew to Green Bay, WI on Saturday, only to arrive in time for terrible news (my Uncle Gus - see last months MidShip Column - passed away), flew back home an hour later, packed a suit and gassed up the Boxster and DROVE back to Green Bay on Sunday, and then drove home on Monday. I had plenty of time to think about the car and tires and road travel on the ride home; Theres no real way to compare the two trips - one is far more time efficient, and the other far more interesting as evidenced by a interesting moment on the Tri-state tollway somewhere just south of the state line, in the wet, in the dark, in moderate rush hour traffic. About 200 feet in front of me, a no-goodpunk-@#$^% decided to change lanes - across three lanes from the outside to the inside. His 5.0 liter Mustang (I know it was a 5.0, because the car crossed in
front of me completely sideways) ricocheted off the inside median barrier, turned around (now facing me/oncoming traffic and traveling over 40 mph backwards) and spun right back across all 4 lanes coming to a stop on the outside median against a light pole. I briefly contemplated stopping to see if he was hurt (and if not, I would rectify that), but I was tired in too many ways; and so my trips and my writing are going on hiatus for a month.
Next month: No, Thanks. Im taking the month off, so to speak. And dont forget the Club General Membership meeting in January. Its an opportunity to meet a lot of other club members and get a decent meal in very relaxed surroundings. Out of the country or In Jail are the only excused absences.

A driving tour has been added to the TRAC 2005 schedule. New this year is a (yet to be confirmed) DE at Autobahn Country Club in Sept and a new concours venue in Geneva. Stay tuned for changes and additions. I think that the explanation in the November Chicago Scene regarding
delivery to your mailbox of the Chicago Scene overlapped several e-mails and phone calls saying that an event was missed because the Scene was late. Please note that as soon as Event Info is available, it is posted on the web page (sometimes even before the Scene has gone to print) and, to the very best of my ability, Event Info is run for a minimum of three (3) months preceding the event. So, check the Three Months At A Glance (page 2 of each issue) and make note of the dates usually, if the event is noted on the 3 month calendar, the Event Info is in that issue. Should you have further concerns about missing event information, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to e-mail, fax, or mail the Event Info to you. Looking ahead: It is the current plan to mail the January Chicago Scene and the Directory together in early January. This will mean that the January Chicago Scene and the 2005 Directory will arrive in an envelope please watch for it and note that January is the only issue that will arrive in an envelope. Also make sure that you mark the General Membership Meeting on your calendar - Sunday, January 30th. Its a wonderful event where you can reconnect with friends after the holidays, meet new members, and hear all about the coming year.
On Thanksgiving Day I called a very dear friend to say that one of the blessings that I was counting on that day was her familys friendship and love. Had I been able to, I would have called each of you to thank you for the privilege afforded me to edit this publication each month. It is, of course, not a solo effort. Steve takes pictures and proofs it for me and many of you contribute articles, pictures, and the items that run in Oversteer. Jim and all that write the monthly articles are terrific about getting stuff to me more or less on time. Thank you. You make what is both a labor of love and a lot of work, a lot more fun. Steve and I had our moms here for Thanksgiving and look forward to having all of the kids (4) and their significant others here before Christmas. In between, we will see many of you at the Dinner Dance. It looks to be a hectic holiday season! To all of you, old friends, new friends, and friends not yet met, Happy Holidays!
