Maverick Minutes
Lisa Steele, Secretary
he last Board Meeting of 2010 began with some holiday music in the background with beautiful decorations along the table and cheery faces in the room. Mr. Pres began the meeting at 7:05 with a very BIG THANK YOU to Clint Blackman for all of his hard work and service with the Sunday Drives. A big round of applause was given to Clint and the clapping continued for John Harvey who will be stepping in and continuing Clints hard work and dedication. Clint Blackman announced that the Holiday Light Drive would be on Sunday, December 12th. The meeting place is Starbucks in Highland Park Village. Clint assured the group that he will be around but taking a little break for a while (a well deserved break, Clint). Jim Falgout reported that during the last two years Maverick Region has sent $1,623.85 more to Hope House than collected in donations. There was a motion by John Hamilton to donate the difference to Hope House. Christy seconded the motion. Motion passed to donate the difference to Hope House. Jim also announced his usual happy phrase, We have money.
Ed Mullenix reported that the Tech Session on November 27th was good and well attended with 7 folks. This was a good number considering it was a holiday weekend. The session lasted about 2 hrs. and everyone had a good time. The next Tech Session is on the calendar for January 15th at Autobahn. The topic of discussion will be brake maintenancemaybe this Secretary should attend this one. Ed is also throwing around the idea of setting up a service clinic prior to DE/TT events to do tech inspection. There is no venue yet but this is still a work in progress. Pat Friend announced that he got in a new batch of badges. He also brought along lots of Silent Auction items for Founders Day from Park Place and Dallas Euro Cars. Travis Howard reported that the AX/TT Awards Banquet was quite a success. Everyone loved the beer mugs and shot glasses for their awards. He said that it was A LOT of FUN!! Travis also announced that he has scheduled a Time Trial at MSR on Oct.23rd and it will be the 1.3 course (should be exciting to do this as a time trial). Apparently Pennington Field is no longer wanting to have Autocrosses in their parking lot so Travis is looking for another space. Robyn Howard said I had what he had referring to all of her husband Travis report. Robyn did tell the group that she is currently talking with a few people about sponsoring some Autocrosses and Time Trials to help fund the more expensive locations. Christy Payne is looking forward to a great Founders Day Event. She reported that the Silent Auction/Raffle was looking good with some great items. Christy reminded the group that the New Member Party will be on January 29th. Christy also had information from Richard Bradley to share with the group. Apparently Richard received a few reports of some damaged Slipstreams, so if you had a Slipstream that was damaged please contact Richard because he has extras. Richard is also kicking around the idea of having an Advertisers Spotlight each month for advertisers to give a little spiel about their business. Madhu Rao was present and assured the group that he would be happy to help in any way he could at Founders Day. What a wonderful attitude!! BJ and John Harvey reported that the Turkey Chase Sunday Drive was great. They had about 25 cars. Don Brown laid out a very nice course. Carey Spreen reported that he might have a great place to do a Rally. He received an email from Mike Mayberry who has a Bed and Breakfast and horseback riding (not in the same room of course) near Whitesboro. There are some great roads for a Rally all around that area, so Carey is going to check it out.
Wendy brought up the recent passing of one of our DE Instructors, Azam Zaidi. As an honor to his memory, the board voted to send a donation to an organization aimed at helping the victims of the flooding this year in Pakistan. Wendy also brought some very colorful name tag holders that would be perfect for DEs. Everyone agreed they would be perfect! She also discussed that Jerry DeFeo was concerned that not a lot people look at and read the Trivia. The Board all agreed that the Trivia is wonderful and would hate to see it go. A new face at the Board Meeting was Mike Farrar. He feels like he has taken advantage of the club for the last 10-12 years and he is ready to help out in any way that he can. I can personally say that Mike has always been a wonderful help at the DEs with anything the Hospitality Chicks needed. I know we will find the perfect job for Mike. Another new face sitting at the table was Rick Schwausch. He, too, would like to give back to the club and contribute some of his time. John Hamilton chimed in and suggested that they could possibly help be a backup for the equipment manager. Chris Christensen announced that our next Happy Hour will be at Bavarian Grill in Plano on December 16th. Forty people attended the HH at Bavarian Grill the last time so it should be a good turn out.
Saabs and other vehicles and eventually their Vipers around tracks and listen to stories of their Road Rallies, and gone to Concours events. But this was my first event as a car owner, or as the wife of a car owner at least. I have moved up in the world to actually getting a seat in the car instead of just washing it. Still, my own car choices and driving styles tend to the much slower and steadier pace of driving a pick-up truck with a horse trailer behind. This is a new world for me. We departed Mesquite and headed out to East Texas. For me it is just fine to sit in a convertible while my husband drives and I get to watch the world and other cars go by. It was a real kick to see all the looks and occasional honks
big group of friendly people. We made our final destination before I, as an older woman, had to make the bathroom. (It was a great laugh to see all the men get out of their cars and run for the bathroom at the potty stop.) Perhaps that is indicative of just how tightly I might have been holding myself whipping through those scenic county roads.
We all enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Edom Bakery, which in addition to great sandwiches also had great chocolate chip cookies as promised by Mr. Blackman. Then we enjoyed a little window shopping with new friends at some of the artists shops across the street. All in all, a perfect day.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR
tuttgart - December 12 - The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR takes off into the new motorsport season with significant modifications. The 2011 version of the worlds most successful GT race car celebrated its international premiere at the Night of Champions party held at the R&D Center in Weissach to mark the end of the 2010 motorsport season. Priority in the further development of the GT3 RSR was given to the newly designed aerodynamics at the front and rear, changes to the suspension kinematics and to the engine. The 4.0-litre, sixcylinder boxer engine now delivers 455 hp (355 kW) at 7,800 revs, five horsepower more than its predecessor. The power increase results from an engine management system which adapts even better to different fuel grades, as well as a redesigned exhaust system and a modified air intake housing. Moreover, the drivability of the famously efficient engine has undergone further improvements. Maximum revs remain unchanged at 9,400 rpm. Clearly visible are the modifications to the front. A new front lip provides higher downforce at the front axle. The front wheels are now wider with the rims growing from 11 to 12 inches giving additional grip and less understeer. The position of the rear wing and the shape of the wing mounting also underwent optimization and were adapted to the new rear fairing with additional air outlet louvers. The rear lid was also redesigned for optimized air ducting. Like the 911 GT3 Cup and the GT3 R, the RSR has now been equipped with the LED rear lights taken from the latest 911 road-legal cars. The 911 GT3 RSR joins the 911 GT3 R and the 911 GT3 Cup as the top model of Porsche Motorsports product range. The successful long distance racer from Weissach can be ordered now at a price of 410,000 Euro plus country-specific value added tax. All 2011 modifications are available as a kit for GT3 RSR cars from the 2010 season.

Cliffs Ramblings: Sebring 2011
By Cliff Blackshear
John and I decided last year, after Sebring 2010 and taking four of the top five places in SP Box class, that we Mavs have to go back and defend our place in 2011. I brought this up at the Hallett Club Race recently with the drivers there that had attended Sebring last year. They all started salivating and expressed great interest in returning. Once again, John and I had to make sure our dealer group wanted to spend the money to support the trip and we got that done. When youre dealing with a proposal that ends up in corporate accountants hands, it had better have some strong backing along the chain of command. Thankfully, up and down our group, we have track rats, gear heads, Porschephiles, ex-racers and a lot of cheerleaders. Yet I wonder how many of you reading this, understand what is involved. First, we have to find a transport, hummm, I wonder if the Ferrari Challenge trailer we own is available. If not, I wonder how much the ticket will be for an enclosed transport that is outsourced? How much is it going to cost per car to get them there and back? Will we need a second 18 wheeler for additional entrants for the class? Can we have more tools and equipment available than last year? This was an area where we really struggled last year, but fortunately other racers that were there lent a hand when we were in need, and we absolutely needed that help. Once the financial commitment is made and racers agree with what their expenditures are going to be, an amazing amount of things have to be done. 1. Set dates of departure and return for vehicles. 2. Figure out how much room the transport has for tools and equipment while making sure all the small needs are met. The decision has been made that only Spec Box cars are in our effort. I really wanted to include more, but it was just not in the cards this year. John has done all of the crucial

they were setting it up on the Dyno and she was hooked! She wanted a 911. Later in 2006, her husband bought her the Targa to celebrate their 10 year wedding anniversary. She (the Targa) is known affectionately as Mausi. In April 2009, they replaced the Boxster with the 997 C4. In 2008, Parade was held in Charlotte, so the family piled in and took everything needed for four days away in their little Mausi. During the gimmick rally, the news had come to cover the event. Founders Day 2010 - GT at the GT (Good Times at the Gaylord Texan)
By Carey Spreen
raditionally, Maverick Region has held its annual Founders Day banquet in honor of the 15 founding members that started the Region back in November of 1962. This banquet, at which the club officers and chairs present season trophies, awards, and other recognition to our members, and at which the next years officers are elected and announced, usually takes place on the second Saturday of November, and is typically followed by the clubs annual Christmas/Holiday Party in early December. However, this year, Social Chair, Christy Payne decided to try something different. In years past, we spent a significant amount of time during Founders Day giving out Autocross and Time Trial awards, which was of course interesting to those who competed in the series, but not necessarily to others who did not participate. To that end, we held a separate Autocross/Time Trial awards banquet in November, which freed up more time at the Founders Day banquet for other activities and general socializing. And since Founders Day was later in the year than usual, it was combined with the Christmas/Holiday Party, as the weekends leading up to the holidays tend to fill up quickly on many folks calendars. Something else new was this years venue the Gaylord Texan. This was one of the better locations in recent memory. We had a large banquet room, with a huge variety of buffetstyle hors doeuvres, main courses, and desserts. A nice touch was that each couple got two free drink tickets, good at the cash bar. This was quite a bonus, since a glass of wine was $12! Also presented to each banquet-goer was a raffle ticket, of which more could be purchased (and some of us took great advantage of that loophole, by the way!) to better the chances of winning something from the large assortment of door prizes donated by the clubs sponsors. Sponsors,

Tech Corner
Ed Mullenix, Tech Chair
ovembers tech session was a lot of fun. Even though it was the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a bunch of folks showed up. We discussed the various tools and equipment that would be employed and then we performed the diagnostic tests on a vehicle electrical system. Hopefully some of the mystery
was eliminated. On February 19th, we will have a tech session at Boardwalk Porsche. The topic will be the clubs tech sheet that has to be filled out prior to our driving events. We will perform a pre-driving event inspection and have some training aids to demonstrate what constitutes a pass or fail on some of the components. For those members that would feel comfortable doing their own inspection, we will pass out wallet cards that certify the member to sign their own tech sheet (alas, no you wont be able to sign your buddys.) The tech sheet pretty much fills up an entire page and looks somewhat intimidating. Most items on the list are common sense things. Something that routinely gets overlooked is brake fluid. Automotive brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. For those of you that have ever bothered to
look, there is a tiny little hole in the cap on the brake fluid reservoir. Its purpose is to vent the reservoir. As the brake pads wear, the pistons in the calipers are displaced further out and more fluid goes into the caliper. The fluid level in the reservoir goes down accordingly. Some manufacturers employ a rubber membrane in the reservoir cap to act as a barrier to moisture. Porsche does not, so moisture from the air does enter the brake fluid through that tiny little hole. When the fluid absorbs moisture, it lowers the temperature at which the brake fluid will boil. For a car driven on roads here in the flatlands, old brake fluid is not much of an issue. If you track your car or drive in mountainous areas, you absolutely do not want the fluid to boil. The club insists that if you are participating in a driving event, you have brake fluid that has been changed within the preceding six months. Nothing will cause you to suck up that seat like pressing on the middle pedal when nothing happens! Also during the session, we will demonstrate how to uncowl a Boxster motor and pull the air filter assembly off of a conventional Porsche so you can see the accessory belt and such. Look forward to seeing yall there. RSVP so Ill know how many donuts to bring. Ed

cant forget the excitement I was feeling when we finished up last months Board Meeting. We had tons of attendees, lots of new faces and lots of enthusiasm around the table. If you ever want to be a part of something fun, as well as encouraging that involves an automobile that Dr. F. Porsche designed, this is it! Come be a part of your club by joining our core group at the Board meetings. You will find somewhere to plug in, and if you dont, we can find something for you to do. As I finish off my 24th issue, I can still remember when Jan passed the baton to me as I thought to myself, I dont know what to do! Now Jans in Colorado bracing for a cold winter and Im still havin fun. This club is full of wonderful people that will become wonderful friends if you plug in. So I encourage every one of you to take a step of faith and become more than you are by yourself. Thank you to every one that has given me the encouragement I needed at the time I needed it, to do something I can for the ones that cant. Heres to a wonderful Holiday season.

Lisa Steele, Secretary
s the Thanksgiving Holiday approaches, this Secretary is very thankful that our Board Meetings are starting and finishing in such a timely manner. We began the November meeting promptly at 7:00 PM. Bryan Bell was running this meeting and he was eager to get it started. Bryan assured the group that all insurance is covered. He also had information from Andy Mears about Slipstream. Apparently, the mail service agency has raised their prices from our current price of $150/month to $500/month. Andy did some research and found another company that will do the job for $280/month. Jim Falgout reports with a smile on his face that we have money. Welluntil that hospitality chick buys the pizza and beer for the next DE. Pat Friend introduced his friend, Paul Jason, to the group. Paul was just sitting in on this meeting, but it wont be long until we convince him that he needs to volunteer for something. Pat was also happy to announce that he delivered his first order of 30 name tags to Chris Christensen for his Happy Hour folks. Can I hear a Woot Woot? Keep those
orders coming in! Pat reported that as of November 15th the on-line Goodie Store may have a slightly different look to it the next time you go on there to order something because there has been a change in management. It should still offer everything Porsche that your heart desires. Richard Bradley introduced his friends, Larry and Donnetta Ramsey. Donnetta has agreed to help with Slipstream Ads so Richard and Christy Payne (who currently does all of the ads) can have a little relief. Both Richard and Christy are doing the Happy Dance! Cant wait to see your awesome work, Donnetta! Michael Pelletier would like for Donnetta to make a special ad for him that says WANTED: Registrar for AX/TT. If anyone is interested in this job, please contact Michael. Christy Payne reminded the group to sign up for the AX/ TT End of Season Celebration and Awards Dinner. She also announced that registration for Founders Day will be up on the website soon. Did we mention that it is at the Gaylord Texan?!! Anyone who is anyone, will be there so sign up early!! I have it from an inside source that the dress code is a nice dress shirt and jeans for the gentlemen and a beautiful blouse or your best Christmas sweater with a pair of jeans for the ladies. I already have my outfit picked outdo you? Robyn Howard was present, but had nothing to report. Travis Howard had a tear or two running down his face as he announced that the AX/TT season is over. Travis was excited to report that he tried a new TT course at the last event and there were mixed reviewskeep those new ideas coming! He also announced that the Mineral Wells dates for next year are all set. Tannia Dobbins is working on the AX dates. Wendy Shoffit was present, but had nothing to report. Carey Spreen attended several SCCA Rallies this year and he made the comment that they make you stop and think too much. Madhu Rao was present, but had nothing to report but he is anxiously awaiting the January Board Meeting when he gets to put his awesome secretarial skills to work. I personally cannot wait to read your Maverick Minutes, Madhu! Clint Blackman announced that the next Sunday Drive is a Turkey Chase in East Texas. Clint also announced that he will be stepping down as the Sunday Drive Chair. It will be hard to fill your shoes ClintThank you for all that you have brought to the ever growing Sunday Drive Group! Clint introduced John Harvey as the new Sunday Drive Chairman. Welcome, John!! Ed Mullenix announced that there will be a Tech Session at Autobahn on January 15th.
Jack Griffin is planning a Concours/Prep for the near futurestay tuned for specific dates! John Hamilton reported that the October DE sold out! Can I get another Woot Woot? He also announced that the November DE is looking good. Of course it is John because we have absolutely the BEST Instructors, Corner Workers, and Staff at our DEs. Come join our FUN!! Meeting adjourned at 7:23pmyes, you heard me right. the meeting lasted a total of 23 minutes! Now that calls for a triple Woot Woot!!!

Im proud to be part of the Race of Champions for the first time, says Bleekemolen. December 11
Race of Champions continued
The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, based on the road-legal 911 GT3 RS sports car, is powered by a 3.8-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 450 hp. The spectacular-sounding race exhaust system features a fully controlled catalytic converter. The rear-engine concept and the wide track give the racing 911 excellent traction and razor-sharp handling. Pilots operate the sequential six-speed gearbox manually. Power from the high-revving engine (max. 8,500 rpm) is distributed to the wide rear wheels via a mechanical differential. Im very pleased that the racing elite from all over the globe will be seen driving the worlds most produced race car, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, says Hartmut Kristen, head of Motorsport at Porsche. Im sure that fans and drivers alike will have just as much pleasure in the spectacular sound and the superb handling of this vehicle. This marks the return of the Race of Champions to Germany since its first meet here in 1989. The event will be broadcast by the German national TV, ZDF. Aktuelle Sportstudio provides coverage on Saturday, with Sportreportage broadcasting the spectacular action from Dusseldorfs Esprit Arena on Sunday. Get more information and follow the action on the events official site www. raceofchampions.com.
Fall Season DE Complete
By Carrie Carrera
here were two remaining fall Driver Education events for 2010. What? You didnt hear about the one in October? Well, that is because all of the fast loud guys were up at the Club Race in Hallett. So we didnt have quite the roar of horsepower that is typical at one of our events. Nonetheless, there was an abundance of horsepower with several GT3s, GT2s, Carreras and a flock of Caymans and Boxsters. We ran the Motorsport Ranch 1.7 configuration going clockwise, for a change of pace. With a balance of cars in each group we had a fun full event. Our remaining instructor team was joined by several of our reserves and guests from other clubs so that we were able to provide instruction to all. Parade laps at lunch was very well attended, with donations going to the Komen Race for a Cure, in support of instructor Lori Mauthes Team Walking On, which is participating in the 3-Day 60 mile walk in San Diego in November. Our season finale was at Eagles Canyon Raceway in midNovember. With a full team of instructors, including the loud guys, we finished our year with another great event. The regulars were back Joel Nannis at Black Flag, John Sandusky as chief driving instructor, Team Leads and Advanced Instructors with their Club Racing Porsches, and our new regular Travis as our Grid Marshall. Travis got his exercise running up and down the grid, around the new tech building, to manage the exit onto the track for each run group and did a fine masterful job in his 2nd event with us. We sure hope he is back next year. Lisa Steele and Andrea Bell discovered a new caterer from Cresson who provided our lunches at MSR, and the food was so wonderful, that they invited them back to ECR. They bring a whole new meaning to the concept of track food wow was it tasty and enjoyed by all. Lisa and Andrea worked all weekend to keep of us well hydrated and fed with coffee and treats in the morning, cold drinks all day, and of course the fine lunch and pizza for dinner Saturday. The instructors GREATLY APPRECIATE their blue buckets of snacks at the grid stations. Due to the fine work of our instructors and excellent students, there were many promotions and solo stickers presented. We were a bit chilly in the wind, yet thankful that there wasnt any rain all weekend. A special shout out to Bob Benson and his team of corner workers that kept us running smooth and safe all day. Without them we couldnt begin to have this much fun. The spring schedule is published for 2011 starting in March at Eagles Canyon, and April at MSR, and then back at Eagles Canyon for Memorial Day. Watch for email alerts and check out Slipstream and the website for more details. Happy Holidays to all and big thank you for all who participated in the 2010 Driver Education Season.

SheLLey MALone, PArk PLAce PorSche enThuSiAST:
Ive been buying cars from Park Place Porsche for seven years, and have probably purchased eight cars from them. I have my baby now a 2001 Turbo with custom wheels. When I purchase from Park Place, its always free of complications. If Im looking for something specific, theyll find it and take care of it for me. Because Ive worked with them so many times, theres a level of trust. I dont worry about it. When you get treated that way, you keep coming back. Whenever Ive brought my cars in for service, its always been a wonderful experience. The car is always ready before Ive even thought about it, and its beautifully clean when it comes back. Theres just a level of perfection at Park Place that you wont find elsewhere. I recently joined the Porsche Club of America, and what got me interested was a Park Place Porsche drive event. Theyd been encouraging me to try it for years, and I finally made the time to do the caravan. It was a blast. They push the cars pretty quick and follow it with a steak dinner; it was first class. The PCA does cool weekend runs, so I plan to do more of that. I love this dealership theyre friendly and personable, provide good service; no problems, just great cars. I recommend Park Place Porsche to anyone interested, and Ill keep coming back.

Happy Hour at Uncle Julios
Chris Christensen, Happy Hour Chair
e had a very good turnout at this months Happy Hour with over thirty-five enthusiastic Mavericks joining in the fun. Two long tables increased to three long tables that normally seat about 15 or so at a table. a good crowd and it seemed everyone enjoyed the food and camaraderie. We even had a couple drop in who now live in Germany, Alan and Verena Lage. About a month or so ago I spoke with Jack Griffin asking him if he would be interested in speaking at an upcoming Happy Hour about his racing history. Jack agreed, being the great guy that he is.
Jacks talk was informative and fun to hearalong with mementosand a tennis trophy?!! Wow, it was good he came home healthy and with some bragging rights. But in reality, anyone who has driven in the 24 hours of Le Mans has bragging rights for a lifetime from our point of view. We thank you Jack for a great presentation and a job well done. It never ceases to amaze us how many Mavericks own more than one Porsche what a testament to the marque!
Jack Griffin, with one of his many Porsches.a 1985 Carrera, with original paint.it is gorgeous!
Many of the Mavericks came to hear Jack talk about his experiences at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Some of us knew Jack had driven in this race, not once, but twice with a third attempt that was foreshortened. Jack had also driven in the 12 Hours of Sebring, as well as others. This writer has always thought the Le Mans race is une course extraordinaire.
Derek Stutsman and his wife Susan enjoying a night out!
Anyone attempting it was certain to prove himself on earth (hopefully not heaven - at least not immediately) as a great racecar driver.
And of course they were all lined up outside Uncle Julios, even impressing the young manager of the restaurant who had to go out and take a peek. It really doesnt matter the year or model of the car you own, it is still a Porsche. We run into many people who will say you know I should never have sold that 356 that I owned many years ago. And many of us still own their original Porsches, it is hard to let go of such a wonderful sports car!

At this months HH, we will be ordering free nametags for all those who signed-up to receive one. We hope to have them completed by the November HH - or if we run late by Decembers. If you missed out we will have additional forms available at next months HH. Next month Happy Hour will return to and close out the year at the Bavarian Grill on December 16tha fun German cuisine with a beer garden atmosphere. See you all there.

Racing with PCA at Mineral Wells
By Garrett Dexter
ince my brother Josh started racing with the Porsche Club back in March of 2010, he expressed to me that I needed to come out and race because, in his words, thats the most fun Ive had in a car with my pants on. So once he told me that after his first time out, I knew I needed to make it out for a race weekend. Garrett Dexter contemplates the We planned a short trip for the day ahead weekend of October 2nd and 3rd; I had no clue what I was getting myself into. We made it out to Mineral Wells airport early Saturday morning and all I saw was a large patch of asphalt, cones and race ready cars. Ive got to admit I was really nervous when we pulled up and walked around, but the butterflies soon settled with the generous greetings from all the other participants and instructors. Josh and I hoped we would be getting into a Porsche, but found ourselves in his Nissan 350Z driving around the Time Trial course at 50% speed. In the car he pointed out the breaking points, apexes and speeds he was going to try to achieve throughout the day. I was a little unsure on how I was going to do, but I then drove the track at half speed with Jeff and he instructed me more on what I needed to do throughout the track and slowly everything fell into place when we picked up the speed. My first few laps with Jeff were far from smooth, but the guidance he gave me stuck in my mind, and by the time I rode with an instructor named Gabby everything fell into place. I then started running faster more smooth times and by the end of the day I was only 2 seconds off of my brothers time. Not too bad for my first time racing. I told Josh that day that I had done things to a car Ive never done before, it was great! Its something else when youre able to run a car to the edge of its breaking point and it still goes; Ive got to give the Z credit there.
OUCH!! I am not sure what was hurt worse.

the Time Trial course and then set up the Autocross course for Sunday, and thanks Tannia and Robyn for showing me how to drive a box truck like a race car!!! The Autocross day opened at sun rise with a nice cool breeze, and I was feeling pretty good about myself. We had to walk the course and determine our lines as if we were in the drivers seat. I was in the first group with Josh and rode the course with him to find some more lines throughout the track. After each run we talked about different things we could do to make the next run faster, such as making this corner wider and turning into the gate between the box and turning into the witches corner.

I turned to Michael with a grin from ear to ear, because the safety was impeccable and I knew I couldnt hurt or injure anything or anyone out there. After that spin out I knew the car and began Chuck McCoy ponders how he can to run faster more efficient get another second out of the course times. By the days end so he can catch Brian Petri. for Autocross I was only 4 hundredths of second off of my brother, and Im glad I didnt beat him cause Jeff even told me that youre not supposed to beat the car owners time. So I abided by that standard, but next time bro, Im going to kick your butt, or if the old man comes out hell probably end up putting us both to shame. In all this was the best weekend Ive had in a long time and I look forward to doing it again. Hopefully soon I can call it a hobby. So thanks, bro. I love you and a special thanks to Jeff, Tannia, Robyn, Gabby, Michael, Travis, Charlie, everyone else and the Porsche Club of America. Its great to see your love and compassion for cars and racing expressed on the track. Thanks again for everything; I will hopefully see you all next year.

Tech Corner
Ed Mullenix, Tech Chair
ast months topic was electrical system maintenance. I will expand on that subject briefly and then touch on the subject of storing your Porsche for an extended period.
I have seen several articles on the various threads about battery tenders (low current battery chargers) and cut-off switches. If you drive your Porsche every day or at least several times during the month, you probably dont need to worry about it starting as long as the battery and charging system are in good condition (re: last months column). If you have a special car that only gets exercised occasionally and only during nice weather, you might consider one of the aforementioned items. A battery cut-off switch is a heavy-duty switch that you connect to your Porsches battery ground cable. It usually has a red plastic lever/key that turns the switch on and off and is removable should you choose to do so (great idea if youre worried about your teenager sneaking the car out while youre away, bad idea if stuff gets misplaced in your garage). With a battery switch turned off, the static current is no longer an issue. You also lose all of your radio preset stations or seat positions because the memory power is disconnected. If your battery is fully charged and you turn the battery switch off, you can come back in several weeks and turn it back on and the car should start. If you plan on not driving the car for several months, a battery tender would be a better choice. Even when fully charged and with no current drain (as in sitting on the shelf in a parts store) an automotive lead-acid battery will discharge after several months. A battery tender is connected to the battery as one would any battery charger. A tender only generates one to two amps of current so there is no worry about overcharging. If you choose the battery tender and leave the trunk lid open, remember to disconnect the trunk light and micro-switch on the trunk latch. You can employ both options and not have to bother with the trunk light, etc. The battery tender requires that you leave it connected to an extension cord plugged into a wall receptacle in your garage. I have seen several cars that had a tender installed, the trunk lid was closed, and the cord was not visible. The result was the tender was ripped out by the roots when the driver failed to disconnect same and drove away. In addition to the battery issue, if you are not going to
drive your Porsche for several months there are some other considerations as well. I had the opportunity several years ago to place my car in long term storage when I won an allexpense paid vacation to Iraq via the Navy! Here in Texas we usually do not have harsh winters with months of rain and snow. If your car is parked in a garage that protects it from rain and cold, you dont absolutely have to top off the fuel tank. Moisture condensation inside a steel fuel tank will cause rust formation. The less steel exposed to moisture-laden air (as in full of fuel), the less possibility of rust formation. I would recommend that you have your oil changed shortly before you store your car. Any combustion engine produces all sorts of weird compounds that become acids in the presence of water. For you non-chemistry majors, the combustion of a gallon of gasoline will produce more than a gallon of water. Most of it goes out the exhaust but some finds its way past the rings into the engine oil where it combines to form acid (bearing-destroying) compounds. Fresh oil has sufficient corrosion inhibitors to prevent any corrosion for several months. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If youve had the brake fluid changed within the past year, I would not be too concerned about it but I would get it changed when I returned the car to service. Next, tire pressure. The tires are not perfectly sealed to the wheels which is why we periodically have to correct our tire pressure. Increase the tire pressure to around 45 psi. before storage to account for the slight air loss. Lastly, rodent damage. I live next to a creek and from time to time, I see evidence of little visitors in my garage. I place trays of rat poison in my garage to give them something to eat besides the insulation on my cars wiring. Not sure why, but there is something about the insulation on German wiring that is irresistible to rodents. I have dogs (four at last count) so I have to be careful where I place the poison. Because Maverick Region encompasses the entire metroplex, we will be having a tech session on the west side of DFW at Autobahn Porsche. The Tech Session at Autobahn Porsche will be on January 15th. Primary topic will be brake system maintenance. We will discuss how driving habits affect brake wear and have some training aids (worn brake components) to illuminate when and why servicing is required. Ed
