Michelin Guides launched on navigation CD-Roms

In-car navigation systems are increasingly becoming the norm in new vehicles across Europe. Already, 1.5 million Europeans have cars equipped with these systems and by 2005, it is predicted that this will increase to more than 3.5 million (Source: DRI). A growing number of drivers are keen to experience the benefits of in-car navigation systems which comprise: an on-board computer, an antenna which receives signals from GPS satellites (Global Positioning System) to follow the whereabouts of the vehicle and a CD-ROM containing digital maps. As a result of increased interest in the UK, a new CD-ROM for Great Britain and Belfast 2002 has just been launched by ViaMichelin, pioneer in digital travel assistance products and services for British and European road users, and Tele Atlas, the worldwide leader in the development of geographic databases with the largest portfolio of detailed and positionally accurate digital maps of Europe. The Tele Atlas/ViaMichelin CD-ROM provides a complete mapping service by combining the most up to date 2002 maps from Tele Atlas with the quality of content from the renowned Michelin Red Guide 2002 which details information on over 7,800 hotels and restaurants. The CD-ROMS are also enriched with 600 tourist attractions from the latest Green Guide. The Tele Atlas maps provide detail down to the street level, along with location information for city centres as well as additional destinations such as railway stations, airports and motorway intersections. Also included are other key services like parking and petrol stations. Designed to appeal to frequent business and leisure travellers, the CD-ROM is easy to use with a dedicated menu for Michelin Guide information and a multi-criteria search function that allows motorists to find the best establishment. It does this according to the criteria selected such as comfort, price category or facilities. Motorists can select a hotel, restaurant or tourist attraction; or they can enter their own destination address. /continued
