THE CONVERTIBLE SEASON HAS DAYS.
To ensure that you can enjoy the advantages of the BMW Series Convertible all year round, it comes with a retractable hardtop which opens and closes fully automatically, either via a switch in the centre console, via remote control, or in conjunction with the comfort access system. Thanks to the design of the roof, water is intelligently routed away and the luggage compartment remains dry even when opening a wet roof. Especially convenient: the comfort loading and unloading function, accessible via remote control, freezes the roof at a dened halfway position. This is a great help when accessing the boot to stow or remove larger luggage items while the top is down. The hardtop system is a pioneer in terms of weight and torsional stiffness, and thanks to the generous side and rear windows, it also offers excellent all-round visibility when closed. It complements the slender silhouette and owing lines of the car to perfection, and lends it its elegant character and low side prole. The hardtops opulent roof liner and excellent noise insulation are additional highlights. The luggage compartment of the BMW Series Convertible holds a lot of cargo. With the roof up or down, golfers, skiing enthusiasts and holidaymakers are in for a pleasant surprise.
When a BMW Series Convertible lifts its roof by the side of the road, it often attracts interest from passers-by. The sophisticated choreography of the three retractable roof panels is considered a remarkable feat of engineering. Once the entire roof of the Convertible is tucked away, many observers assume that the luggage compartment is now full. But what makes the threepanel BMW roof so special is its space-saving storage. Below the roof remains a luggage space which can accommodate board cases or a cm long and cm high suitcase. In conjunction with the optional through-loading system, there is enough space here for a golf bag, skis or a snowboard. The comfort loading and unloading function (shown below) makes loading easier when the roof is down.

BMW EfcientDynamics represents the most comprehensive package of innovative technologies for reducing fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously enhancing dynamic performance that is currently in standard production. With it, BMW has been able to reduce the CO emissions of its entire eet by approximately percent since. models produce less than g of CO per kilometre, and BMW has already rolled out more than two million vehicles equipped with EfcientDynamics. BMW intends to achieve a further % reduction by. Different paths to the same destination: unmistakable BMW driving pleasure. Under the umbrella of the BMW EfcientDynamics project, BMW is continuously developing innovative systems that will bring us nearer to the goal of emission-free mobility in the long term. Driving pleasure has not, of course, been forgotten. Its being pursued in four different ways at once. The optimisation of models with conventional diesel and petrol engines continues apace. BMW has also launched its rst production models with hybrid drive: the BMW ActiveHybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid X. Both models offer exemplary efciency and dynamism to an unequalled degree. Based on the BMW Concept ActiveE with its innovative % electric drive system, a whole new form of dynamism is set to be launched in spring a model that will pave the way for the emission-free mobility of the future. And nally, a completely new vehicle concept targeted at meeting the need for sustainable mobility in fast-growing conurbations will soon become reality in the shape of the Megacity Vehicle (MCV), specially developed as part of project i. THE BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS MEASURES IN THE BMW SERIES CONVERTIBLE AT A GLANCE.
Petrol direct injection. This latest-generation petrol direct injection system features injectors located right next to the spark plugs. They inject fuel at high pressure with maximum precision, ensuring particularly efcient combustion. Valvetronic. The Valvetronic valve control system improves engine response and renement and helps to reduce fuel consumption considerably. The system provides fully variable valve lift adjustment of the inlet valves. Auto Start/Stop function. BMW four-cylinder engines with -speed manual transmission automatically shut down when the vehicle comes to a stop and the driver operates the clutch to shift into neutral. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch pedal is operated again. This innovation signicantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in urban trafc. Tyres with reduced rolling resistance. While driving, tyres are constantly changing shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling resistance minimise the tyres changes in shape by means of an optimised design and the use of special materials in the tread.
Optimum Shift Indicator. Shifting gears at the right time is one of the easiest and most effective ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator used in conjunction with the -speed manual gearbox comes in. It shows the driver which gear to change to in order to save fuel. Electric Power Steering. Unlike conventional, hydraulic steering systems, Electric Power Steering only draws power during actual steering movements. When the steering wheel position is constant, the electric motor is inactive. Brake Energy Regeneration. Brake Energy Regeneration means that the alternator normally only generates electricity when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator or brakes making productive use of excess kinetic energy to feed the battery.

Unique in the world, its drive concept combines a TwinScroll turbocharger, Valvetronic and petrol direct injection with a six-cylinder in-line engine. THE FEELING OF DRIVING THE BMW SERIES CONVERTIBLE IS BEYOND DESCRIPTION. ITS TECHNOLOGY ISNT.
-speed sport automatic transmission with double clutch. This innovative transmission (optionally available for the BMW i Convertible) has two separate clutches for the odd and even gears. When one gear is disengaged, the next one is already engaged minimising shift times, and maximising precision. So you can accelerate without any interruption of power, just like in a sports car.
Active Steering. Every bend is different. That is why the Active Steering system, available as an option for the six-cylinder models, adjusts both steering ratio and steering force as a function of road speed. At low speeds for example when parking two turns of the steering wheel are enough to go from lock to lock. At higher speeds, the steering wheel must be turned further to achieve the same effect, enhancing stability.
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Highly sensitive sensors track vehicle status on a permanent, practically real-time basis and optimise directional stability and traction as required, via engine and brake management interventions. This makes it easier to control the vehicle in poor conditions, enhancing both safety and driving pleasure.
Lightweight chassis. The almost perfect : front-rear weight distribution ensures that the BMW Series Convertible stays safely on track, with neutral steering, high directional stability and superb traction. Together, all these systems ensure a level of dynamic performance that offers a very intense driving experience. In addition, the aluminium doublejoint trailing-arm front axle increases dynamic ability, while ensuring superb ride comfort.

Rollover protection system. The rollover protection system tucked away behind the rear seat backs ensures the necessary headroom in the event of a crash. Highly accurate sensors react to any violation of dened limits for parameters such as vehicle angle, longitudinal and lateral acceleration or loss of ground contact. In such a situation, the rollover bars are deployed from behind the rear headrests within fractions of a second.
Airbags. In a BMW, all safety features complement each other perfectly. Four airbags offer specic protection: the driver and front passenger airbags and head/thorax airbags for the front seats. They greatly decrease the risk of injuries to the head, pelvic and chest areas.
Occupant cell. The body uses high-strength materials and an optimised structural design to ensure a maximum of passive safety in the event of a front, side or tail-end collision. Thanks to dened deformation zones, the body structure can absorb impact forces, helping to protect the occupants.

On long journeys, I dont always want to have to look at the speedometer. Not a problem with Active Cruise Control.
Comfort Access, including exterior door handle illumination. This system allows you to unlock, lock and start your BMW without inserting the key. All you need is the remote control, which transmits an identication signal to the car, in your pocket. Simply touch the door handle or boot lid and the BMW unlocks or locks as required. Similarly, a touch of the Start/Stop button is all it takes to start the engine.
Active cruise control. This option enables comfortable driving at a pre-selected speed. When driving in columns of trafc, your BMW automatically adapts to the speed of the preceding vehicle and uses its radar sensor to maintain a pre-set distance. The braking function ensures that the desired speed is maintained even when travelling downhill (not for four-cylinder models).
The IT revolution has changed the way we live. For BMW drivers, it has become normal to view their vehicle as another networked component of their lives they expect to be able to access information on the go, communicate via phone or e-mail, and keep up with the latest news. therefore comprises all packages and innovative technologies that enable the networking of BMW vehicles and their occupants with the outside world, including the immediate trafc environment. BMW ConnectedDrive innovations optionally enhance convenience, infotainment and safety.
Infotainment. I used to have to stay late at the ofce. Today, I just take it along with me. Using the BMW ConnectedDrive Ofce function.
Safety. When I drive at night, this assistant really brightens things up: the BMW High-beam assistant.

Bluetooth interface with added functionality (Bluetooth Ofce). Use the time you spend on the road even more effectively! Thanks to the optional mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface in conjunction with a navigation system and the intelligent integration of selected business mobile phones, you can use the Bluetooth connection to show Ofce functions such as e-mails, dates, tasks or SMS messages on the Control Display while on the move, or have them read out aloud to you via the audio speakers, using the text-to-speech function. And thanks to Bluetooth Audio Streaming, wireless playback of music via selected Bluetooth-enabled devices is not a problem. USB/audio interface with extended functions. In combination with the optional USB/audio interface and the original iPod USB cable, your BMW is able to display the album cover for the currently played title in the Control Display. This Cover Art display adds the cover for any song and album, for fast and convenient reference (function also available for other music devices). The USB/audio interface also makes it easy to update a part of the vehicle software in your BMW via a USB stick. This provides access to the complete range of functions supported by new mobile phone and music player models.
High-beam assistant. The optional High-beam assistant recognises light sources in the cars environment and switches the high beam on and off, according to the trafc situation. When the system is active, an image sensor at the back of the interior mirror monitors the trafc and lighting conditions. Based on these sensor images, the assistant decides whether or not the high beam should be switched on. When it detects vehicles ahead, or nds that ambient light is sufcient, the high beam is switched off again.
BMW Connected. For the rst time, you can now use apps in your BMW. With the optional Apps feature, an iPhone and the free BMW Connected App from the Apple App Store, youre no longer limited to listening to local radio. Using the iDrive system, you can select web radio stations from around the world. You can also call up the latest status reports from your Facebook or Twitter accounts on the Control Display. And thats just the beginning, more functions and apps will follow in the future.

Light rings creating a four-eye face. The light rings surrounding the headlights of the BMW Series Convertible create the familiar BMW face. The rings are used as parking lights and, at a slightly brighter setting, as daytime running lights. With the optional LED elements, the rings emit a brilliant white light. Americans lovingly refer to the light rings as Angel Eyes.

The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of ne engineering always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW EfcientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in a number of completely emission-free BMW 7 Series sedans. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW already includes the multi-award-winning BMW EfcientDynamics technology package as standard that boosts dynamics even further whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
And this is what comes out.
High Precision Injection In this cutting-edge generation of petrol direct injection, the Piezo injectors are positioned very close to the spark plugs. They inject the fuel at high pressure and with extreme precision. The injectors central positioning means only part of the combustion chamber needs to be filled with an ignitable petrolair mixture. This enables efficient, lean engine operation, especially in the heavily used part-throttle range.
Auto Start/Stop function BMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed manual transmission automatically shut down when the vehicle is stationary, for example at a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is activated again. This innovation signicantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in city trafc.
Optimum Shift Indicator Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction with 6-speed manual transmission comes in. It shows the driver what gear to use in order to save fuel.
Sports automatic transmission with double clutch This transmission changes gears with lightning speed and without any power gap. In automatic mode, fuel consumption is reduced considerably, because the transmission quickly and precisely selects the appropriate gear for any situation.
Electric Power Steering Unlike conventional, hydraulic steering systems, the electrical steering only uses energy during actual steering. When the steering wheel position is constant for example at high speed along the motorway the electric motor is inactive. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance While driving, tyres are constantly changing shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, thus reducing deformation.
Brake Energy Regeneration To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is permanently driven using engine power, imposing a constant overhead on the cars fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver either takes the foot off the accelerator or brakes previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel.
BMW already offers 24 models with CO2 emissions of 140 g/km and signicantly less. But thats just for starters. Were carrying on our research with EfcientDynamics in the quest to bring you more driving pleasure and less emissions.

s Xenon Headlights for high and low beam, including four light rings used as daytime running lights, headlight washing system and automatic headlight range control, provide much better illumination of the road ahead at night or in poor visibility. o Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution and turning light illuminate bends as soon as the driver steers into them. The turning light comes on automatically in tight corners at speeds up to 65 km/h and when indicating.
s Headlight washing system ensures unimpaired illumination in all weather conditions. If the windscreen wipers are activated while the headlights are on, the headlamp lenses are also automatically cleaned.

o Rain sensor with automatic driving lights control: once activated, the rain sensor will automatically switch on the windscreen wipers when it begins to rain, adjusting the wiper frequency in line with rainfall intensity. The integrated automatic driving lights control will switch on the low beam automatically at dusk and in tunnels.
o High-beam assistant supports the driver by automatically switching between high and low beam when trafc is approaching or enters the lane ahead. When street illumination becomes adequate, headlights are automatically dimmed.
s Retractable hardtop, opens quickly and automatically including the windows upon pressing a button in the centre console. Ensures all-year-round usability, improved theft and damage protection, and provides excellent soundproofing even at high speed.

s Start/Stop button for starting the engine. After inserting your ignition key, you can start and stop the engine by pressing this button.
o Cruise Control with braking function (not for 320i and 320d) stores, displays and maintains any selected speed above approx. 30 km/h. After accelerating, the car automatically returns to the previously stored speed. Braking cancels the settings.
o Active Cruise Control (not available on 320i and 320d) can be programmed to maintain a set speed when the lane ahead is clear, or to reduce speed to keep a safe distance between you and a slower car in front, automatically maintaining that distance until the radar sensors detect that the lane is clear. The braking function ensures that the desired speed is not surpassed even when driving downhill.
s On-board computer provides information on average speed, average fuel consumption, current fuel consumption and range.
o Navigation system Professional*, incl. DVD drive, iDrive controller with direct menu control buttons, eight functional bookmarks, integrated hard disc for storing audio data and navigation data, map display, birds eye view and high-resolution 8.8" display.

The figure quoted includes a 90 per cent tank filling, 68 kg for the driver and 7 kg for luggage. Unladen weight applies to vehicles with standard equipment. Optional equipment may increase this figure. The overall weight of the trailer may not exceed the maximum permissible trailer load plus the maximum permissible towbar download. BMW recommends the use of RON 95 super unleaded petrol. Unleaded RON 91 and higher with a maximum ethanol content of 10% (E10) may also be used (for 335i: minimum RON 95). Output and consumption figures apply to RON 98 fuel. All engines comply with the EU5 emissions standard (the 335i and 325d are EU4-compatible).
