THE NEW BMW 5 SERIES TOURING: AESTHETICS, SPORTING APPEAL, MAXIMUM VERSATILITY.
In a few days, the eagerly anticipated new BMW 5 Series Saloon will become available in the showrooms. And in autumn, only six months later, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is scheduled to make its market debut. The fourth generation of this successful executive estate by BMW continues its tradition of superior aesthetics, sporting elegance, unparalleled driving pleasure and maximum versatility in a premium executive-class vehicle. What sets the new BMW 5 Series Touring apart from its predecessor, even at first glance, are its elongated lines and dynamically sloping roofline. Equally apparent: the optimised interior. Here, the new BMW 5 Series Touring offers a uniquely comprehensive range of intelligent details and a versatility that is unmatched in this category. And BMW EfficientDynamics ensures a spate of best-in-class ratings in terms of both performance and fuel efficiency. Rounding off this innovative vehicle are BMW-exclusive driver assistance systems as well as brand-new, unique BMW ConnectedDrive functions. The new BMW 5 Series Touring will have its world premiere at the Auto Mobil International show (AMI) in Leipzig, Germany (1018 April); market launch is scheduled for September 2010.
Design: dynamic, sporty looks and unusual aesthetics.
The long bonnet, short overhangs, the longest wheelbase in the segment, an elongated silhouette and the dynamically sloping roofline ensure that the new BMW 5 Series Touring looks nothing like its competitors. The precise lines and distinctive surfaces extending from the front across the sides all the way to the rear underline the active, sporty looks and unusual aesthetics of this five-door vehicle. Powerful aesthetics: Characteristic design highlights include an athletic shoulder area, a distinctive swage line and the muscular sculpting and concave surfaces below the swage line. Reinterpretation of trademark BMW features: The wide BMW kidney grille stands very upright, even seems to be sloping towards the front from some angles, hinting at the powerful engine under the bonnet. The strongly contoured bonnet combines with the muscular flared wheel arches and horizontal rear lines to underline the cars sporty appeal. Precision down to the last detail: the distinctive Hofmeister kink a key styling element for all BMW models emphasises the dynamic flow of the cars lines. The redesigned optional roof rail is another element that adds interest to the low, athletic appearance of the silhouette, which really serves to set the new BMW 5 Series Touring apart from all its competitors.
Hallmark BMW style: the rear view of the new BMW 5 Series Touring with the muscular flared wheel arches and the characteristic L-shaped taillights.
Sporting elegance: dynamic proportions and precisely sculpted lines immediately set the new BMW 5 Series Touring apart from its competitors.
Interior: premium quality and unmatched versatility.
The interior of the new BMW 5 Series Touring is setting standards through premium quality on the one hand, and driver orientation and great versatility for all occupants on the other. Other characteristic features include the contemporary, generous ambience, a centre console angled slightly towards the steering wheel, and the intuitive functionality of the iDrive system. In addition, this car is offered with a unique range of intelligent details which enable drivers to extend their transport capabilities according to their personal requirements.
Highlights at a glance: As the only vehicle in its category, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is offering a 40/20/40-split folding rear seat backrest (which can be folded down with a 60/40 split from the luggage compartment). This considerably increases flexibility (with competitors only offering 1/3-vs.2/3-split options). By folding down some or all of the elements, the luggage compartment volume can be increased from 560 litres to up to 1,670 litres if necessary. Optional luggage compartment package with a unique backrest tilt function: seat back angles can be adjusted by up to 11 degrees, via 7 different settings. The benefit: a 30-litre increase in capacity, additional space especially for bulkier items, while preserving the rear seats. New: the cassette for the divider net and load area cover can now be released completely with one touch of a button on the right side of the vehicle. Another exclusive feature that comes as standard in the new BMW 5 Series Touring: the separately opening rear window. It now opens automatically via the remote. The load area cover provided as standard is automatically lifted or lowered when opening or closing the tailgate or rear window. The electrically operated tailgate (optional), activated via a button in the vehicle key, provides additional comfort when loading and unloading the vehicle.
Biggest monitor in this class: The iDrive operating system includes the Controller on the centre console, direct menu control buttons and functional bookmarks as well as a Control Display that is harmoniously integrated into the instrument panel, at the same height as the instrument cluster. At a size of up to 10.2 inches, the monitor is the largest in this segment.
Optional luggage compartment package: The rear seat backrest has adjustable tilt angles that ensure a unique degree of versatility. Seat backs can be adjusted by up to 11 degrees, with a total of 7 settings. This corresponds to a 30-litre gain in luggage capacity while creating space for bulkier items.
The luggage compartment also contains an underfloor storage
compartment, covered by a removable floor panel. In addition to the lashing eyes included as standard, the optional luggage compartment package includes attachment rails, a strap to secure luggage, and a storage net.
Engines: maximum driving enjoyment, maximum efficiency.
At the start of production, the engine portfolio for the BMW 5 Series Touring comprises two six-cylinder in-line petrol units, one six-cylinder in-line diesel and a four-cylinder diesel engine, with outputs ranging from 135 kW/184 hp to 225 kW/306 hp. Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, almost all engine variants provide more power than their predecessors while also using less fuel and producing fewer CO2 emissions. This makes the BMW 5 Series Touring the sportiest and most efficient vehicle in its category. The BMW 535i Touring is powered by the most powerful six-cylinder engine (3.0-litre capacity, 225 kW/ 306 hp). The combination of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, direct petrol injection and variable VALVETRONIC valve lift control is unique. The BMW 523i Touring comes with a version of High Precision Injection that promotes even greater fuel efficiency. Its 3.0-litre naturally aspirated engine with lean-burn combustion benefits from direct fuel injection and delivers 150 kW/204 hp. In the BMW 530d Touring, a new, 3.0-litre turbo diesel provides superior pulling power, refinement and efficiency. The six-cylinder engine provides 180 kW/245 hp. When equipped with optional BMW BluePerformance technology, the BMW 530d Touring (with automatic transmission) already complies with the EU6 emissions standard. Thanks to its advanced four-cylinder diesel engine, Auto Start/Stop function included as standard, and an output of 135 kW/184 hp, the BMW 520d Touring manages new best-in-class efficiency ratings in its category. It requires an average of just 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the EU test cycle. CO2 emissions are a mere 137 g/km.
High on torque, low on emissions: the 3.0-lite six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the new BMW 530d delivers 180 kW/245 hp. When equipped with optional BluePerformance technology, the automatic transmission model already complies with the EU6 emissions standard.
BMW EfficientDynamics: maximum driving enjoyment in combination with a comprehensive features package designed to lower fuel consumption and emissions. The recuperation display in the cockpit indicates the status of the Brake Energy Regeneration system.
In addition, the BMW 5 Series Touring comes with the most comprehensive selection of transmissions in its category. As an alternative to the 6-speed manual transmission provided as standard, all model variants will also be available with an optional 8-speed automatic transmission or an 8speed sports automatic transmission including new steering wheel paddles and M gearshift logic. Its gearshift dynamics match those of a double-clutch transmission, with gear changes that are barely perceptible. At the same time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are even lower than those of the corresponding manual transmission models.
Unique choice: the 8-speed automatic transmission and the 8-speed sports automatic transmission are available for all engine variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring.

The self-levelling pneumatic rear suspension, also included as standard, ensures consistent comfort independent of the load carried. With the largest selection of standard and optional chassis systems in this category, the new BMW 5 Series Touring meets a broad spectrum of customer wishes. Another new equipment feature for the BMW 5 Series Touring is the Dynamic Driving Control which in conjunction with the optional sports automatic transmission, Integral Active Steering, and Dynamic Damping Control or Adaptive Drive enables drivers to select an individual suspension set-up that is unmatched in this segment. Suspension variant Basic suspension with double wishbone front suspension, integral rear axle and electromechanical power steering including speeddependent Servotronic steering assistance and self-levelling pneumatic rear suspension. M sports suspension (optional) including lowered suspension.
For a special driving experience: the Integral Active Steering system for the new BMW 5 Series Touring is unique in this category and enhances agility in urban traffic while also providing greater sophistication and ride comfort at higher speeds.
Bespoke driving dynamics and comfort: With the largest selection of standard and optional chassis systems in this segment, the new BMW 5 Series Touring meets a broad spectrum of customer requirements. In addition, the optional Dynamic Driving Control offers drivers a choice of several suspension modes, ranging from distinctly comfortable to extremely sporty.
Customer benefits Perfectly tailored to the requirements of the typical business customer who expects trademark BMW driving dynamics and receives further increased comfort features in the bargain, even when carrying heavy loads in the back. This option is unmatched in the segment for the BMW 5 Series Touring and provides a special driving experience which enhances agility in urban traffic while providing added comfort and directional stability at higher speeds.
Adaptive Drive (optional): a combination of Dynamic Damping Control with electronically controlled dampers and the electronically controlled Dynamic Drive anti-roll system. Integral Active Steering (optional): A combination of active steering at the front and rear-wheel steering. Depending on the driving situation, the rear wheels are turned either the same or the opposite way to the front wheels.
Integral Active Steering (optional) This combination provides every possible suspension configuration and Adaptive Drive (optional). and meets the requirements of BMW drivers who desire the ultimate balance of ride comfort, safety and dynamism.
New optional equipment at luxury class level.
Its comfort features and many new driver assistance systems are another area where the new BMW 5 Series Touring is setting standards in the premium executive segment. Unmatched in its scope, the BMW ConnectedDrive range has been rounded off by innovative office functions and Bluetooth audio streaming. BMW ConnectedDrive is setting standards in this segment. Newly available office functions and Bluetooth audio streaming further optimise the integration of smartphones such as the Apple iPhone. This technology also provides numerous comfort, safety and infotainment functions, some of them exclusive to BMW, such as Advanced eCall, BMW Routes, BMW Assist, BMW Online as well as unlimited onboard Internet access. As the only manufacturer in this segment, BMW is offering a Parking Assistant (optional) with steering function which will autonomously steer the car into a parking space. Further optional driver assistance systems include Approach Warning with light-braking function as part of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Surround View and Rear View Camera with a total of five cameras. Other optional features for the new BMW 5 Series Touring: Lane Change Warning and Speed Limit Info. Another unique piece of optional equipment in the executive segment is the Head-up Display (optional), which has been further optimised in terms of display (now multicolour), resolution and size and can even be connected with other innovative driver assistance systems.
Parking assistant with steering function: this innovative assistance system supports the driver during parallel parking by automatically operating the steering wheel.
Important information at a glance: As the only vehicle in its segment, the new BMW 5 Series Touring can be fitted with a Head-up Display. This system, now optimised even further, projects selected information onto the windscreen, within the drivers immediate field of vision.
Optional comfort features like the 4-zone automatic air conditioning, active seat ventilation for the front and the rear-seat entertainment systems show that the new BMW 5 Series Touring more than ever is taking its cues from the luxury class.
Uncontested pole position among its competitors.
The new BMW 5 Series Touring offers a unique combination of driving enjoyment, efficiency, aesthetics and variability in the premium executive segment especially when compared to its core competitors, the MercedesBenz E-Class Estate and the Audi A6 Avant. The new BMW 5 Series Touring also manages to convince with new, pioneering innovations that many other manufacturers are nowhere near offering. BMW 5 Series Touring
New standards for the executive class: compared to its competitors, the new BMW 5 Series Touring not only manages to impress with its aesthetic design, it also features efficient drive technology, tailor-made suspension options and numerous innovations.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate by Mercedes-Benz, relaunched in September 2009, with very good comfort levels and many safety features. Lagging behind BMW in terms of fuel efficiency, owners in the upper age bracket. Classic estate looks with distinctive, hardly dynamic appeal, rear-centric utilitarian looks with steep tailgate. Generous, comfortable interior in traditional Mercedes style. Centre console still cluttered with too many switches, despite Comand operating system. Automatic selector lever on the steering column. Rear seat bench only comes with a 60/40-split (activated from the luggage compartment), electrically operated tailgate as standard, automatically raised and lowered load area cover. BlueEfficiency fuel-economy technology available for almost all engine options; lagging behind BMW in terms of performance and efficiency; Mercedes four-cylinder diesel suffering from a slight lack of refinement; four-cylinder engines only offered with five-speed automatic transmission, six-cylinder engines available with seven-speed automatic transmission. Very comfort-focused suspension with a noticeable lack of dynamic ability; selective damping system as standard; self-levelling suspension as standard; optional pneumatic suspension for six-cylinder models; no Integral Active Steering. Extensive equipment range and very high safety levels, thanks to, among others, Attention Assist. Large selection of driver assist systems and comfort features. Not all features offered for the BMW 5 Series Touring are available for the E-Class.
Premium executive estate with superior aesthetics, sporting elegance, exceptional performance and efficiency and many innovative engineering features. Individual, distinctive front, dynamic proportions, sporty yet elegant appearance. Excellent, harmonious interior, driver orientation, very clean cockpit with few controls, iDrive with best-inclass operating logic, unique versatility and great operating comfort thanks to 40/20/40-split (60/40-split from the luggage compartment) rear backrests which also offer backrest angle adjustment, as well as automatically opening rear window and automatically raised and lowered load area cover. BMW EfficientDynamics for best-inclass performance and fuel economy; at 5.2 litres/100 km, the BMW 520d Touring is the most efficient vehicle in the segment. Eight-speed automatic transmission and eight-speed sports automatic transmission optionally available for all engine variants.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate: the design of this five-door estate is dominated by its overly pronounced wedge shape
Classic style: the interior of the Mercedes E-Class offers a generous sense of space and a traditional ambience.
Lots of room, but little dynamic flair: the steep tailgate of the E-Class Estate represents the brands classic estate look. The Mercedes scores with its large luggage capacity, but cannot quite match the versatility of the new BMW 5 Series Touring.
Best agility in the segment, with Dynamic Driving Control enabling individual suspension settings; Integral Active Steering and Adaptive Drive for superior safety and best-in-class comfort; selflevelling pneumatic rear suspension as standard. Unique BMW ConnectedDrive features (including office functions, Bluetooth audio streaming, Advanced eCall, Internet access); first parking assistant with steering function in the segment; Surround View and Head-up Display are equally unique in this category.
BMW 5 Series Touring Contemporary premium executive estate with superior aesthetics, sporting elegance, exceptional performance and fuel economy and many innovative engineering features.
Audi A6 Avant: The family resemblance is as conspicuous as the large bland surfaces which make the design appear static.
Audi A6 Avant This Audi estate has been on the market since 2005 and is beginning to show its age, despite a facelift in 2008. Less prestigious than the BMW 5 Series Touring. Audi A6 Avant conforming very strongly to the typical Audi look. Low level of differentiation from other Audi model series like the A4. Many large and bland surfaces make for a static appearance. Very generous sense of space, good workmanship. The cockpit, however, appears overly cluttered with many switches and buttons, and the MMI system is very complex. Rear seat bench with only a 40/60-split and no backrest angle adjustment, no activation of the folding mechanism from the luggage compartment, no separately opening rear window.
Characteristic model design language with individual interpretations giving the new BMW 5 Series Touring its unique identity. Precisely executed design details. Modern ambience, generous sense of space, high-quality materials and very elegant, tidy cockpit with a focus on the driver. Standard equipment includes iDrive, the most intuitive, user-friendly system in this category. Smart details for superior versatility.
Brand-specific ambience: the interior of the Audi A6 combines a generous sense of space and good workmanship with a cluttered operating system and many switches.
A familiar sight: the rear of the Audi A6 Avant looks much like that of other Audi models. Compared to the new BMW 5 Series Touring, the luggage compartment is less versatile.
BMW EfficientDynamics as standard, eight-speed automatic transmission and eight-speed sports automatic transmission optional for all engine variants; BMW 520d Touring is the most efficient vehicle in the executive class by far. Innovative suspension technology for a first-class, trademark BMW driving experience. Rear-wheel drive ensures excellent agility, precise steering and balanced front-rear weight distribution. Noticeably increased ride comfort. Comprehensive range of new, innovative driver assistance systems, comfort features at luxury class level, many new technologies available for the first time in this segment.
No adequate features package to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, only very limited engine/ transmission combination options for customers; Audi A6 TDI e with significantly compromised performance but still higher fuel consumption than the BMW 520d. Audi A6 Avant steering is affected by torque steer caused by the frontwheel drive; more powerful engines only available in conjunction with allwheel drive (increased weight and fuel consumption). Inferior to the new BMW 5 Series Touring in terms of agility and comfort. No innovative features such as Head-up Display, BMW ConnectedDrive or Integral Active Steering; many engineering features off the VW Group shelves.

The Front starting point of flowing lines. The front end is the starting point of all flowing lines, which extend from the bonnet to the sides and well into the rear of the BMW 5 Series in one integral movement. The characteristic contours of the headlights underline the dynamic, selfconfident personality of the BMW 5 Series. Modifications were made to the lower enclosure of the double kidney grille in the front valance. As a result of the deliberate omission of a formal link, the double kidney appears more powerful and autonomous.
The air inlet is wider. Its modified exterior with integrated fog-lights bears an optical resemblance to the headlight cluster.

Whilst the characteristic exterior shape of the headlights has been retained, their interior was changed completely. The light conductor rod at the top of the headlight is enclosed by a mattfinish cover. When not illuminated, it conceals the active side marker (positioning light) and underlines the focussed expression of the headlights.
The sidelight conductor rings give a night-time appearance that has become a trade-mark BMW design feature (which first appeared in the ESeries in 2000). The light source of the indicators is concealed by transparent slats, which pick-up the exterior line-flow and underline the distinctive headlight appearance. LCI

The moderate interpretation of convex-concave surfaces on the side imparts an impression of lightness and elegance. The striking light reflecting edge of the rocker panel line optically stretches the silhouette of the BMW 5 Series LCI and picks-up the lower lines from both the front and rear valance.

The rear Powerful emphasis on width.
The small number plate recess is clearly defined and accentuates the powerful rear end. Both taillights are linked by a dominant line, which creates an optical subdivision of the bumper area. The tailpipe cut-out is smaller to reflect more light and defined contour lines create a more flowing convex-concave bumper design.

The five radial light conductor rods underline the affiliation to the BMW family particularly at night when illuminated. As with the headlights the rear lights now incorporate rear active side markers (positioning lights).

Engines 523i/525i/530i
All 6-cylinder petrol engines will now be powered by the new N53 engine which combines dynamic and sophisticated driving performance with efficient fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The HPI combustion process (Highprecision direct injection) in the N53 is characterised by its central location of the injector and spark plug in the combustion chamber. The location of these components and the piezo technology of the injector enable a reduction in fuel consumption by an average of 14% compared to VALVETRONIC in the NG6 engines (eg. N52 engine). Innovations of the new N53 engine High-precision direct injection with 200bar pressure Piezo injector High pressure pump Magnesium crankcase Electrical water pump Oil level sensor Differentiated suction unit (DISA) BI-VANOS
