Fitting Details

Your car contains the latest technology ECU that can be reprogrammed through the on-board diagnostic port (OBD-II). Specialised software interfaces with your vehicles engine management system to extract the electronic code via serial download. Once the information has been read, Powerchip technicians apply the performance changes and upload the performance program back through the OBD-II port. Installation cannot be performed by the end user. Programming must occur at an Authorized Powerchip Office or at authorised Powerchip Platinum dealers. The programming takes approximately 2 hour's to complete.

Speed Limt

Your vehicle uses a factory speed governor that prevents the vehicle from reaching any speed above the preset factory limit. The speed limiter is a set of digital instructions that measures the vehicle speed and limits acceleration at a certain speed. By adjusting the values in the ECU, and raising the speed limiter to operate above the natural top speed of the car (according to engine power Vs vehicle air coefficient). This allows the vehicle to attain its natural top speed without hitting a preset limit. This feature is safe for use on the racetrack; however, Powerchip holds no responsibility for vehicles driven irresponsibly. Powerchip recommends adherence to all local road laws including speed limits. Furthermore the tyres on your vehicle must be suitable for sustained high speeds (i.e. W, Y or Z rated).

Drivability

Powerchip technicians do not spend their whole research and development focus tuning the full throttle performance of each vehicle. A significant emphasis is placed on the part throttle performance. We understand that driving in everyday conditions is more than just flat out acceleration, with your foot flat to the floor. With Powerchip performance software, your car will perform to its potential, even when you are not demanding the peak performance. You no longer need to mash the throttle to take off briskly, and in-gear overtaking can be performed without needing to change down gears. Manufacturers Tolerances

BMW unfortunately leaves large tolerances in the performance characteristics of its entire fleet to allow for drivers that are negligent on maintenance, and who are non-enthusiasts. The X5 E53 3.0d MY04-06 is de-tuned to be able to run on the poorest grade of fuel that the car is likely to encounter anywhere in the world, and also to allow for the small percentage of owners who put their cars reliability to the test due to their lack of mechanical understanding. Exaust Gas Temperature

The Powerchip is designed to get the best from your diesel engine, to do this your engine is tuned with longevity in mind. A diesel engines Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) rises as fuel is added. The more fuel, the higher engine output and EGT. The Powerchip upgrade utilizes the manufacturer's fine resolution adjustment of injection timing and duration, turbo boost and torque limits to ensure torque, drivability and throttle response are not compromised across the rev range.

Cetane Rating

Cetane Rating is a quality rating for diesel fuel, similar to octane ratings for petrol. It indicates how easily the diesel fuel ignites and burns. Powerchip understands and develops all our performance diesel software in Australia to suit Australian weather and altitutde conditions.

In a regular service it is very unlikely that the dealer would perform any tasks that are additional to those required by the manufacturer. The dealer tool may be able to detect that modified software has been fitted to the vehicle. The vehicle can still continue to be flashed by the dealer with any software updates that become available. The Powerchip does not 'lock out' the dealer from reflashing the car. The Powerchip software does not make it any different to service than a vehicle with out a Powerchip. All 'Fault Codes' continue to able to be read, just like a standard car

"As far as I can determine the car's normal smooth running characteristics are pretty much unchanged, however the car accelerates much quicker than before. It feels so willing to accelerate that at first I thought the car was holding lower gears, but I'm used to it now and drive on a lighter throttle most of the time. Under full acceleration it really does take off like a scolded cat and feels as if 500kg has been lopped off the weight somehow. I've compared fuel economy over 2 tanks of juice, about 1800k's of combined city and freeway driving; the reading is 9.5L/100 compared to 11.3L/100 previously. I drove 100K to Brisbane on the freeway at 120kph all the way and got an amazing 7.8L/100! Downside.it's very tempting to give it a bootfull now and then just for the sheer fun of it!"

s Brake Force Display with two-stage brake lights makes it easier for drivers following from behind to see how hard you are applying the brakes: If you are applying the brakes in an emergency, the brake lights cover a larger area, allowing following traffic to distinguish between full application of the brakes and just a slight tap on the brakes. s Controller is the central iDrive input element (for driver and passenger). Additional functions can be activated from the control display using this rotary/push button. Menu navigation is oriented to the four cardinal points. Four different menus are available: Climate, Communication, Navigation, Entertainment and on-board info (optional navigation).
s Control Display with TFT screen (6.5 inch, colour). Shows the functions activated by the Controller (e.g. on-board computer or radio). In conjunction with the optional navigation system Professional* or with the TV function, the screen measures 8.8 inches.
s Functional bookmarks: With these buttons, the driver and passenger can save their most frequently used navigation, audio (e.g. certain radio stations or CD tracks) or telephone functions on eight separate buttons for rapid access.
o Navigation system Professional* with colour 8.8 inch display, trafc guidance provided by voice information, arrows and street maps. The split-screen function allows you to view radio and navigation data simultaneously.
o TV function allows you to use the Control Display as a television when the vehicle is stationary. Both analogue and digital (DVB-T) channels broadcast by terrestrial stations can be received.
o Rear view camera clearly shows the area behind the vehicle on the Control Display, where interactive road line markings show. for example, whether the target parking space is large enough for the vehicle. The rear view camera is activated automatically when the reverse gear is selected.

o Park Distance Control (PDC), front and rear, makes parking and manoeuvring easier in the narrowest spaces; the distance between the vehicle and the nearest obstacle is signalled acoustically as well as visually in the Control Display.
o Auxiliary heating with remote control, ideal in winter and in cold weather. When you step into your vehicle, the windscreen is already free of ice and the interior is already pleasantly warm.
s Cruise control with brake function facilitates comfortable driving at a preselected speed (30250 km/h).
s Six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic. Gears are shifted very quickly and smoothly for optimum performance on the road.
s Parking brake with Auto-Hold-function, allowing you to hold and release the vehicle most conveniently by means of a button in the central console.

s Automatic air conditioning, incl. microfilter, to provide an ideal climate at any season, automatic temperature and air volume control, vent programme and rear ventilation; settings displayed on Control Display (standard on the 3.0si and 3.0d).
o 2-zone automatic air conditioning, incl. Automatic Air Recirculation (AAR) with circulation filter, sun and condensation filters, automatic temperature control (separate for driver and passenger) as well as air volume control; display and settings on the Control Display (standard on the 4.8i and 3.0sd).
o 4-zone automatic air conditioning. As for 2-zone air conditioning, plus the climate in the rear area of the vehicle can be separately controlled with two dials and a display. This feature also includes rear blowers, footspace heaters and outlets on the B-pillars.

o Head-Up Display shows relevant information, for example current speed, directly in the driver's field of vision. Arrow directions for navigation, for example, can also be shown. Height and brightness of the display can be individually adjusted, so that the driver can fully concentrate on the traffic at all times.
o Preparation for mobile telephone with Bluetooth interface, incl. hands-free installation with Snap-in adapter (Original BMW Accessory) for a wireless Bluetooth mobile phone connection which can be operated via the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, iDrive Controller or the voice control system. Includes sockets for charger and antenna. Your BMW partner will be happy to inform you about recommended telephones.
o Sports seats for driver and passenger, highly contoured seat sides for optimal lateral support at all times. Seat height, seat angle and backrest angle are electrically adjustable, thigh support manually adjustable.
o Comfort seats for driver and passenger (shown here with Active seat ventilation, which is only available in conjunction with Nevada leather, perforated) with electrical seat adjustment for all seat levels. Further electronic functions include the upper seat back and seat depth adjustment and height adjustment.
s Standard seats, with manual adjustment forward/back and for headrest height and angle, as well as electrical adjustment for seat height, and seat and backrest angle.
o Lumbar support on drivers and front passengers seats, electrically adjustable, to provide a perfectly ergonomic seating position and support your back muscles.

o Seat heating for driver and front passenger: Seat surfaces and backrests with heating in three stages for pleasant temperatures shortly after setting off.
o Active seat ventilation provides a noticeably more comfortable ride. Fans in the seat base and backrest blow air through the seat covers (available for the driver and passenger in conjunction with Nevada leather, perforated and comfort seats). o Active seats for driver and front passenger provide a relaxed seating position even over long distances. The seat moves up and down on either side, cyclically mobilising the pelvis and lumbar spine (available in conjunction with comfort seats).
o Panorama glass roof with an extra-large opening and a transparent viewing area, plus speed-related wind deflector. Both glass panels tilt up electrically at the touch of a button and the front panel comes additionally with a sliding function, an electrically operated roof liner (protecting you and your passengers from glare) as well as comfort opening/closing complete with trap release.

o Rooiner in Anthracite; the A-, B-, C and D-column trim as well as the sun visors and roof grab handles are finished in refined Black (included in Sports Package).
o Interior mirror and exterior mirror, with automatic anti-glare function which activates once a certain light intensity from following vehicles is reached. With fold-in function for exterior mirror. o Alarm system with remote control: In any attempt to break into and manipulate your car, the alarm system sets off a loud signal and immediately switches on the hazard warning flashers.
s Rear seat back rest, can be 60 : 40 asymmetrically split and individually folded down.
o Third row of seating1 ensures a flexible use of the available space. The two additional seats face forward, and can be separately folded down. This option includes additional heating for the third row footspace. (Option for 3.0si, 3.0d and 3.0sd incl. level adjustment with air suspension on the rear axle).
s Luggage compartment partition net behind the second row of seating, ensures that objects in the luggage compartment cannot fall forward into the passenger compartment.
o Storage package including an illuminated storage box under the front central console with a 12 volt socket, two lashing rails with four lashing points in the luggage compartment, multifunction hooks and storage nets left and right (in conjunction with third row of seating, storage net under armrest).

BMW Recycling.

Your BMW is the product of a comprehensive recycling concept. But what exactly does that mean in practice? It means that all the requirements of recycling are taken into account from the start, in the initial development of a BMW. One example is careful material selection designed to preserve resources and to ensure efficient recycling compatible with the environment.
