Introduction Welcome

Thank you for purchasing a Bose LIFESTYLE DVD home entertainment system. Through proprietary Bose technologies and innovative LIFESTYLE systems design, this elegant and easy-to-use system delivers superior performance for both music and video programming.

Capabilities and Controls The remote control
The advanced radio-frequency remote control provided with the LIFESTYLE system works from almost anywhere inside your home. Simply press any button. There is no need to aim the remote at the media center.

Power and mute

Turns the system on and off. Selects the source last used. Mutes the volume for all connected speakers (main and in other rooms). Mutes or unmutes the volume in the current room.
Source and input selection
Turns the system on and selects the built-in disc player as source. Turns the system on and selects the built-in FM/AM radio tuner set to the station last selected. Switches between FM and AM when the radio is on. Turns the system on and selects an AUX source connected to the media center. Turns the system on and selects the TV connected to the media center as source. When the remote has been set to do so*, turns the TV on and off. When the remote has been set to do so, scrolls the TV inputs to select one. The input that connects to the media center is one choice. Turns the system on and selects a cable box or satellite receiver connected to the media center. When the remote has been set to do so*, turns your cable or satellite box on and off. Turns your system on and selects the VCR connected to the media center as the sound source. When the remote has been set to do so*, turns your VCR on and off.
*You can choose to set the LIFESTYLE remote to control your TV, cable or satellite box, or VCR so it will turn those devices on or off. To do that, refer to Using your LIFESTYLE remote with other components on page 18. Until then, however, simply turn on the TV or component using its power button or remote control. 7

Menu and program selection English
Enters or exits the Settings menu for the current source. Enters or exits the System menu. Enters or exits the menu of the DVD disc that is currently loaded. Skips to the previous TV channel.* Displays or exits the cable or satellite information window, if available. Pressing and holding this button (until the change is apparent), removes or restores auido track information on the media center display.

Play options

Note: All of the buttons shown below, except Shuffle and Repeat, can be used with your VCR or DVR after the remote has been set to control it. Stops the disc player. Note: For DVDs and VCDs only, the system remembers the point where the disc was stopped. Pressing again clears that memory. Pauses the disc player. Starts the disc player. Skip back or forward to the start of a track or chapter. Or, when pressed and held, scans back or forward through the current CD or MP3 disc, or adjusts the speed of the scan. Plays CD tracks in random order. Press Shuffle again to cancel this mode. Repeats a whole CD or track, DVD chapter, or DVD title. Press Repeat again to cancel the repeat mode.
If the remote does not work as you expect
If your system does not respond when you press a button on the remote, it could be time to change batteries. For information on the type of batteries to use and how to change them, refer to Troubleshooting on page 41. In some buildings, you may experience dead spots where the remote control will not operate effectively. If this happens, move the remote a foot or two and try again. Also make sure the cord that connects the power supply to the media center (and contains the remote antenna) is stretched to its full length. If these efforts do not work, move the media center a few feet to a location where it provides a better response. If the batteries are fine and the suggestions concerning dead spots above do not work, you may need an antenna extender. To contact Bose customer service to request one, refer to the address list included with the system.
Capabilities and Controls The media center
The CD/DVD tray and system controls are located under the front panel door of the media center. To the right of that is the display window (Figure 1). An IR signal emitter, located under the CD/DVD tray, enables you to control other components using the LIFESTYLE remote. Avoid blocking the emitter, so its signal will have a clear path to other components or reflective surfaces in the room. Figure 1

The nine control buttons work as described below.

On/Off

On/Off Source Volume
Turns the system on or off in the main room only. Selects the source last used when it turns the system on.

All Off

Turns off the system and all connected speakers (in all rooms).

Using the LIFESTYLE remote control, to assign to a specific number:
To remove a station preset Tune to the preset number you want to remove. Then follow the step below:
On the remote control, press and hold the 0 number button until the message PRESET: XX ERASED appears briefly on the media center display. The removal is then completed. To reassign a preset to a different station 1. Tune to the station preferred. 2. Using the remote control, press and hold the preset number button you want to reassign to that station.

Using the headphone jack

For private listening, you can connect headphones to the jack located on the right side of the media center as you face it. Note: Connecting headphones causes all main room speakers to be muted.

Using the sleep timer

You can set the sleep timer to turn off the LIFESTYLE system automatically in 10 to 90 minutes, depending on the time you select. You can do this in the Settings menu for any source that is selected. Note: If you are unfamiliar with use of the Settings menu, refer to Making adjustments to a particular source on page 24. In the Settings menu on the media center display or on the TV screen, move around and make changes by using the selection buttons.

To set the timer

On both the media center display and the TV on-screen menu, the same actions apply: 1. 2. Figure 3

Press the Settings button on the LIFESTYLE remote to enter the source Settings menu. Move down to the Sleep Timer symbol, the last feature in the menu (Figure 3).
Note: If you see a continuation arrow at the bottom of the menu, move to it to see the other attributes that are not currently shown. 3. Move right into the options list and up to the delay time you want, from 10 to 90 minutes.
Note: Pressing the up arrow when you reach the 90-minute option turns the sleep timer off. 4. 5. Press Enter to confirm your selection. Press Exit or Settings on the LIFESTYLE remote control to leave the menu.
When the time you set elapses, the system, the TV (if it is on*), and the sleep timer will all turn off automatically. *For the TV to turn off automatically, the system must sense that it is on. This is contingent on your use of the supplied TV sensor. For information on installing and testing the TV sensor, refer to your LIFESTYLE system Installation Guide.

Controlling External Sources Using your LIFESTYLE remote with other components
You can control most brands of external components, such as TVs, VCRs, and cable/satellite boxes, using your LIFESTYLE remote control. You can also designate one of these components as the video tuner (channel selector) for all, to further simplify operation. Your LIFESTYLE system includes an infrared (IR) emitter that sends out signals from the front of the music center to any component that your LIFESTYLE remote is set to control. This allows you to turn on other sources in the room and make basic selections from them, whether they are connected to the media center or to the TV. Note: If a component is located where it cannot receive these IR signals, you can use the supplied IR emitter cable with that component. For tips on getting the IR signals where they need to go, or using the optional emitter, see Connecting the optional IR emitter cable in your Installation Guide.

5. Identify the TV brand: From the Remote Control options in the System menu, select TV Brand (Figure 5). Move right into the list of brands and up or down to locate the brand for your TV. Press Enter to select that brand. Figure 5

Choose the device code: In the menu options on the left, select TV Device Code. Move right to select the first code. Press the TV On/Off button on your LIFESTYLE remote. Press that button again. If the TV turns off and on again, you have chosen the right code. If the TV does not turn off, select another code, and press the TV On/Off button two more times.* When you have chosen the right code, press the Enter button. To have the TV come on automatically, whenever you press a video source button, follow Step 7 on page 20. To skip this step, press System or Exit to leave the System menu.

Changing Source Settings Making adjustments to a particular source
While watching a video or listening to music on your system, you can make quick adjustments that will increase your enjoyment of the program. For example, you may want to hear more or fewer of the system speakers playing, or boost the center channel volume slightly. For this purpose, each source you use with this system has its own Settings menu, with features appropriate to that source. With a little experience, moving about and selecting options in the Settings menu for each source becomes second nature. Just try it and see.

How to see your options

To see the settings, you must first select the source. Then, on the LIFESTYLE remote control, press the Settings button to enter the menu. You can view the Settings menu for each source on your TV screen or, for audio sources only, on the display panel of your media center. If your source is the FM radio tuner, the setting options appear on the media center display (Figure 8). The choices scroll into view as you press the down button on the remote. Figure 8

To see the Settings menu on the TV screen as well, turn on the TV and select the TV input for the media center. If the list of elements in a menu is longer than can be seen, a small down or up arrow indicates where to move to see the others.

How to change the settings
In the Settings menu on the media center display or on the TV screen, move around and make changes by using the selection buttons shown. On the display or the screen, the same actions apply: Press the left, right, up or down arrows to get to the option you want. Press Enter or the left arrow to confirm your selection and move back to the features column. Repeat those steps for each change you want to make. Press the Exit button on the remote control to leave the Settings menu. The progression below shows how to change the number of speakers used in FM (Figure 10). A. The FM Settings menu appears on the TV screen with 5 speakers as the default setting. B. Arrow buttons move right and up or down to change the number of speakers playing. C. You can use the actions above to restore the original settings, too. Do this if you do not like the effect of a change you have made, or accidentally made a change you did not intend. The original (default) settings for each source are shown as the first option for each feature on the pages that follow. Note: You can restore all default settings by choosing Restore Settings in the Systems menu, under Media Center. This reverses all changes you have made in both the Settings or System menus. Instead of making this overall change, you can note the default setting listed on the pages that follow, then re-select that setting in any of the sources.

There are different settings menus for AM and FM. You can adjust the settings differently for each. Two of the attributes below are available only when the tuner is set to FM. Using System Menus Making system adjustments
Adjustments to system properties are typically made only once. If your system operates as you want it to, there may be no need for any changes. In some cases, however, changes are required to make the system fully compatible with the installation options you have chosen. Using a component video connection is one example.
How to see the System menu
The System menu appears on the TV screen only, not on the media center display. To see the menu, you must have the TV turned on and the Video input on the TV set for the media center. Then, press the System button on the LIFESTYLE remote control. The menu appears with Audio selected, showing a preview of the Audio features. Note: Entering the System menu causes any DVD or VCD that is playing to pause. Figure 11

How to make changes
Making system adjustments in this menu is similar to changing the settings for a source. Move around and make choices by using the selection buttons shown. Move right across the categories to see the preview of the features. Press the down arrow or Enter button to select Audio for changes. Note: When you move into the features display, it changes from preview to an active screen with a slightly different appearance. Press the left, right, up or down arrows to get to the option you want. Press Enter or the left arrow button to confirm your selection and move back to the features column. Off System does not allow IR control by another remote or does not teach IR commands to a learning remote. Reference Remote control maintenance
Changing the batteries as needed is the only regular maintenance required. However, the switches inside the remote battery case may be changed, as needed. Additional remotes for use in other rooms may need their switches changed, too. For that, refer to Bose link remote switch settings on page 39.
Replacing the remote control batteries

Slide open the battery compartment on the back of the remote (Figure 17). Insert four AAA or IEC-LR3 1.5V batteries, or the equivalent, as shown. Match the + and symbols on the batteries with the + and markings inside the compartment. Slide the battery compartment cover back into place.

Changing house code settings
Each LIFESTYLE remote control uses a house code that corresponds to the house code set in the media center, enabling the two to communicate. If another LIFESTYLE system nearby creates a conflict with your system, you can easily set a new house code in your media center and its remote control(s) with steps that follow. Using the remote control: 1. 2. Open the remote control battery cover and locate the miniature switches (Figure 18 on page 38). Move one or more of switches 1, 2, 3, or 4 in the opposite direction from its current setting. Use a paper clip, ball point pen, or similar object.
Note: DO NOT change any other switch settings. Moving other switches may disable your remote control. 3. Replace the battery cover.

Using the media center: 1. 2. Lift the media center door and press the All Off button. Press and hold the Store button. Your current house code will appear in the media center display window in the form of four rectangles, which represent the positions of switches 1 through 4: HOUSE CODE:

Release the Store button. The system remains off. If you have additional remote controls, change the switches to match those of the first remote control by following steps 1-3 above. You do not need to repeat steps 4-8.

Other switches

Switch 5 determines what stream or program you hear. For more information on streams, refer to Setting up a second room with sound below. Switches 6-9 represent the room where the remote will be used. In the main room, the remote is set as Room A with all switches down.
For a Bose link remote in another room
Switches 1-4 need to match those switch settings in your main remote. Set switches 5-9 for the room where you will use the Bose link remote.
Setting up a second room with sound
Your LIFESTYLE DVD home entertainment system can direct sound to more than one room at the same time. Whats more, it can even direct sound from two different sound sources (such as CD, AM/FM tuner, TAPE, or AUX) to these rooms through two independent streams. In other rooms with speakers (beyond the main room where the media center is located), you can choose either of these streams from different sources, for true independence. If the system is on in the main room, listeners in other rooms can enjoy the same program playing there or an entirely different program. Capable of supplying up to 14 addiitonal rooms with Bose sound, one LIFESTYLE system can fill your entire living space with music.
Bose link: the key to assured compatibility
One option is using a Bose product you already own, if you want the sound in just one additional room. As a second option that can provide sound throughout your home (or even outside!), the Bose link network connects all the pieces and offers a variety of Bose products of consistent quality for use in the other rooms. These include smaller Bose systems, powered and unpowered speakers and amplifiers, plus the proper cables and adapters to complete your sound network. And by purchasing a Bose link remote control for each additional room, managing your whole-house music system becomes quick and easy. Inside these remotes, one small switch allows you to predetermine which rooms, as a group, will share the main room program stream and which other room or group of rooms will hear the alternate stream. For more versatility, you may prefer using a PERSONAL music center II remote control in your other rooms. Besides providing the ability to switch between program streams without setting switches, this advanced remote provides an LCD screen that shows you what is playing on both steams. So it is very easy to choose one or the other whenever you like. Regardless of which type you choose, with any Bose link remote control you also get detailed instructions on using the network. And a Bose link symbol on the cartons (for the products mentioned above) helps simplify your selections. Problem What to do Make sure antennas are connected properly. Move AM antenna at least 20 inches (50 cm) from the media center. Adjust antenna position to improve reception. Make sure the AM antenna is in an upright position. Move antennas farther from media center, TV, or other electronic equipment. Select another station. You may be in an area of weak signal coverage for some stations. After pressing the CD/DVD button, wait a few seconds before pressing Play. Make sure the disc is properly inserted (label side up). Eject the disc and try loading it again. The CD may be dirty. See Cleaning discs on page 40. Try another CD. The CD may be defective or not compatible. See Types of discs you can play on page 5. Adjust antenna position to reduce interference. Weak FM stations will produce static in the surround speakers. Select the 2-speaker mode in the Settings menu to minimize noise. See Tuner setting options (FM or AM radio) on page 26. Make sure speaker cables are not damaged and the connections are secure. Reduce the output level from any external components connected to the media center. Check the connections. Make sure that component is turned on. Refer to the component owners manual. Make sure correct codes are set. See For TV control on page 18. Make sure that the front of the media center is not obstructed. The IR emitter that sends commands to your external components is below the disc tray. If you still cannot control your external components successfully, you may need to connect the external IR emitter, included with your system, to the IR EMITTER jack on the rear panel of the media center. See Connecting the optional IR emitter cable in your LIFESTYLE system Installation Guide. Reposition the TV on/off sensor on the back of your TV. Or check the SCART connector if you use one. Verify that the TV on/off sensor is working properly by choosing TV Power Status under Video in the System menu. Use the media center to check the Video Format and Progressive Scan settings, following instructions in Activating component or progressive scan connections on page 11. - Video Format should be set to NTSC (U.S. standard) or PAL (European standard). - Make sure the Progressive Scan setting is Off, unless you have used a component video connection and progressive scan is a feature of the TV. Enter the numbers 2673 as temporary password to access the parental controls. Then create a new password.

Introduction Before you begin

Thank you for your purchase of a Bose LIFESTYLE DVD home entertainment system. It will serve as the center of your home theater, providing superior audio performance for music and movies. There are four different systems, the LIFESTYLE 18 Series II, LIFESTYLE 28 Series II, LIFESTYLE 38, and the LIFESTYLE 48 systems. All include multiple room connections, most include the AdaptiQ audio calibration system, and the LIFESTYLE 38, and LIFESTYLE 48 systems have the uMusic intelligent playback system. This book shows you: The components included with your system and how to set the system up. The pictures on the next two pages will help you become familiar with each part of your system. First you will set up the audio portion of the system. You will find the best locations for your media center, cube speakers, and Acoustimass module. You will identify and connect the cables that are specific to each part of the system, the AM and FM antennas, and the power cords. How to make a basic connection between your LIFESTYLE system and your television, which will allow you to see the on-screen menus. Your Operating Guide offers information on other aspects of the use of your system. How to power up the system and optimize its sound for the component placement you have selected in your room. How to connect other pieces of equipment, such as VCRs, cable or satellite boxes, DVD changers, game consoles, and recording equipment, to make an even more versatile home theater system. The instructions in this section help you connect your system in your main room. However, if you wish to extend your systems sound to other rooms, read the special considerations in Expanding your system to other rooms on page 32 before you make any connections.

TV on/off sensor

Note: You may need other cables and adapters to complete your home theater setup. For example, if you intend to use, and your TV supports the progressive scan feature, you will need three component video cables long enough to reach from your media center component video adapter to your TV.
System Installation Placing your speakers
When you place your speakers according to the guidelines below, they provide the audio atmosphere of a home theater. You may experiment with the placement and orientation of the speakers to produce the sound most pleasing to you. CAUTION: Choose a stable and level surface for each speaker. Vibration can cause speakers to move, particularly on smooth surfaces like marble, glass, or highly polished wood. If you place the center speaker on top of the television, for example, be sure to attach the supplied rubber feet to the bottom of that speaker. To obtain additional rubber feet, contact Bose customer service. Refer to the Bose address list included with your system. Note: Do not place a cube or cube array speaker on its side, as this diminishes performance.
Left and right front speaker placement
To best match sound and picture, the left and right front speakers should be placed at the edge of the TV picture (Figure 3). Place each speaker up to 3 feet (1 m) from the edge of the TV screen and line them up with the center of the TV screen. Bose recommends a maximum distance of 3 feet (1 m) from the edge of the TV screen so that the sound does not become too separated from the picture. You may wish to vary this distance based on room conditions and personal preference. The front cables allow the speakers to be placed up to 20 feet (6.1 m) from the Acoustimass module. Rotate the top cube of each speaker array (or the single cube speaker) toward the wall or in another direction to create reflected sound. See the illustration of reflected sound patterns in Figure 4 on page 9. Figure 3

Note: If the center, left, or right front speakers will be in a bookcase unit, be sure to place them at the front edge of the shelf. Placing speakers in an enclosed space can change the tonal quality of the sound.

Put any side of the Acoustimass module on the floor. DO NOT stand it on either end (Figure 6).

BEST For best ventilation, stand it on the narrow side with the connectors facing the floor.
DO NOT stand the module on its slightly curved back end, which can cause it to tip over. DO NOT stand the module on its front grille end. The weight of the module can damage the grille.
ALTERNATE Or, place it on one of the two broad sides.

Ventilation openings

Once you have selected a position for the module, place the four self-adhesive rubber feet near the corners of the bottom surface. The rubber feet provide increased stability and protection from scratches. CAUTION: The magnetic field from the Acoustimass module is not a short-term risk to your video tapes, audio tapes, and other magnetic media. However, you should not store tapes directly on or near the Acoustimass module.
Placing your media center
Note: If the serial number on the bottom of the media center is not already printed on your Product Registration card, now is a good time to record it there and in the space provided on page 3 of this guide. Note: Sending in the product registration card, included with your system, is very important if you want to receive software updates. Be sure to fill out the card and mail it to Bose. Select a location for the media center, keeping in mind the following guidelines: Do not block the front of the media center. Allow enough room to lift up the front cover and open the CD/DVD tray. Also, be sure you have a clear view of the display window on the front of the media center (Figure 7). Place the media center close enough to other sound sources (TV and VCR) to allow for easy cable connections. If you need additional audio or video cables to connect your components, see your dealer or call Bose customer service. Refer to the Bose address list included with your system. Place the media center within 30 feet (9.1 m) of the Acoustimass module (the length of the audio input cable). Note: For convenience, until your system is completely installed, you may wish to place the media center where you have easy access to its rear connection panel.

Connecting the speakers to the Acoustimass module
CAUTION: Before you make any connections, be sure that the media center, the Acoustimass module, and any additional equipment are not connected to AC power. Your system may have Jewel Cube speakers (image A on the left), which use a plug-in cable connect, or cube array or single cube speakers (images B and C respectively,) which use a two-wire cable. LIFESTYLE DVD systems include five speakers.

Note: If your system has cube or cube array speakers, follow the instructions in Making the two-wire connections for cube or cube array speakers on page 13. The positive and negative wires of the plug-in cable are properly oriented for polarity and the plug is designed to fit only one way into the jack. 1. Match the correct cable to the corresponding speaker location: Front speaker cables have blue RCA connectors on one end and speaker plugs at the other end with L (left), R (right), or C (center) markings. Surround speaker cables have orange RCA connectors at one end and speaker plugs at the other end with L (left) or R (right) markings.
2. Insert the speaker plug of each cable fully into the jack on the rear of one of the five speakers. The raised part on the plug slips into a notch at the top of the jack.

Connect the RCA connector at the other end of each cable to the corresponding jack on the Acoustimass module (Figure 10 on page 14). Blue connectors go into the matching left front, center, and right front jacks. Orange connectors go into the matching left surround and right surround jacks.
Making the two-wire connections for cube or cube array speakers
Note: The surround speaker cables are joined together for your convenience, providing an easy-to-use cable for connecting the surround speakers. To run the cables in different directions from the Acoustimass module, simply pull apart the cables as needed. Note: To lengthen the speaker cables, use heavy-duty RCA extension cables, or splice in 18gauge or thicker cord (connecting + to + and to ). To purchase extension cables, see your dealer or electronics store, or call Bose customer service. Refer to the Bose address list included with your system. In Figure 9, the wire marked with a red collar is positive (+) and the plain one is negative (). These wires match the positive (red) and negative (black) terminals on the back of each speaker. 1. Match the correct cable to the corresponding speaker location. Front speaker cables have blue connectors at one end, with L (left), R (right), or C (center) molded into the connectors. A red collar on each + wire is labeled LEFT, RIGHT, or CENTER. Surround speaker cables have orange connectors at one end, with L (left) or R (right) molded into the connectors. A red collar on each + wire is labeled LEFT or RIGHT.

2. Connect the wire end of one speaker cable to the terminals on the rear of the matching speaker. Press the terminal tab on the back of the speaker and insert the marked wire (+) into the red terminal and the plain wire () into the black terminal. Release the tab to secure the wire. Repeat this step for each of the five speakers. Figure 9

Connect each cable to the corresponding jack on the Acoustimass module (Figure 10). Plug the blue connectors into the matching left front, center, and right front jacks. Plug the orange connectors into the matching left surround and right surround jacks.

Note: You may find it more convenient to place the Acoustimass module upside down while making connections. When done, place it on any of its sides but not on either end or top.
System Installation Connecting the Acoustimass module to the media center
Connect the Acoustimass module to the media center with the audio input cable (Figure 11). Note: Be sure that each connector is fully inserted into each jack. 1. 2. 3. You may find it easier to insert the power adapter cord into the media center first. Do not plug the other end into an AC (mains) power outlet until all connections are completed. Plug the small black multi-pin connector (flat side up) into the Speakers jack labeled Main on the back of the media center. Insert the telephone-style RJ-45 connector on the other end of the audio input cable into the Audio INPUT jack on the Acoustimass module. When properly inserted, it locks in place.
Note: An antenna is built into the media center power cord; be sure to unwrap the power cord for the best remote control operation (Figure 11). Note: Refer to Expanding your system to other rooms on page 32 for information on connecting a second room. Figure 11

CAUTION: Do not place strain on the audio input cable, especially on the connection to the Acoustimass module. Excessive strain on the cable may cause damage to the connection at the Acoustimass module. When disconnecting the cable from the Acoustimass module, be sure to press the tab on the connector.
System Installation Connecting the antennas
You should connect the additional AM and FM antennas, included with your system, to the rear panel of the media center (Figure 12). Figure 12

Note: The FM jack (75 ohm) can be used with an outdoor antenna. To do this, consult a qualified installer. Follow all safety instructions supplied with the antenna. CAUTION: Do not attempt to connect a television cable to the FM antenna jack.
Connecting the FM antenna
Plug the connector on the FM dipole antenna lead into the FM antenna jack. Spread out the antenna arms. Change the orientation of the antenna arms to get optimum FM reception. Place the antenna as far from the media center and other components as possible.
Connecting the AM antenna
Note: To mount the AM antenna on a wall, follow the instructions enclosed with the antenna. 1. 2. 3. Plug the connector on the AM antenna lead into the AM antenna jack. Stand the loop antenna on the base, following the instructions enclosed with the AM antenna. Move the AM loop antenna as far as possible, at least 20 inches (50 cm), from the media center, and at least 2 feet (60 cm) from the Acoustimass module. Experiment with the orientation of the loop for optimum AM reception.
Note: AM radio reception may be adversely affected by your television. For best AM reception, turn the television off.
Connecting to a cable radio provider
Some cable TV providers make FM radio signals available through the cable service to your home. This connection is made to the FM antenna jack on the back panel of the media center. To connect to this service, contact your cable TV provider for assistance. Note: Make sure that the cable radio installation includes a signal splitter so that only the FM radio band, not the cable TV band, is received by the media center. If necessary, contact a qualified installer.

Turning off the speakers in your TV
When you listen to TV sound through your LIFESTYLE system, the speakers in your TV should be turned off or set to their lowest volume. To turn their sound off: 1. 2. 3. 4. Use the TV on-screen setting (not to be confused with the LIFESTYLE system menu or settings menu). Select Internal Speakers: Off (the wording for your TV may vary slightly). If you have a choice between Variable and Fixed, choose Fixed. Refer to your TV owners guide for more detailed instructions.
System Installation Connecting the system to power
Note: Bose recommends using a quality surge suppressor on all electronics equipment. Voltage variations and spikes can damage electronic components in any system. A quality suppressor can eliminate the vast majority of failures attributed to surges and may be purchased at electronics stores. Connect the two AC power (mains) cords in the following order: 1. 2. 3. Figure 14

Plug the small end of the Acoustimass module power cord into the AC power jack on the connector panel of the Acoustimass module (Figure 14). Plug the other end of the power cord into an AC (mains) outlet. Turn the Acoustimass module POWER switch to on.

Note: For dual voltage units (sold in certain areas), make sure the voltage setting on the bottom of the media center power supply matches the local power rating (Figure 15). Check with local electrical authorities if you are not sure of the appropriate power rating.

4. If you have not plugged the small round connector of the media center power supply cable into the DC POWER jack on the media center connection panel, do so now (Figure 15). Insert the power supply cord connector into the power supply and plug the cord into an AC (mains) outlet.

Installing the remote control batteries
Slide the battery compartment cover off of the back of the remote. Find the polarity markings (+ and ) inside the compartment and install the four batteries accordingly (Figure 16). Slide the cover back on the remote and snap it closed. Note: Do not change the settings of the factory-preset miniature switches. See your Operating Guide for information on how to prevent conflicts with other LIFESTYLE systems. Figure 16

Replace all four batteries when the remote control stops operating or its range seems reduced. Alkaline batteries are recommended. Your remote control will need to be taught to control external components of your home theater, including your TV. See your Operating Guide for details.
System Installation Finishing the basic installation

ADAPTiQ calibration headset
Setup Disc 1 provides information about your system and verifies that your speakers are connected correctly. Setup Disc 2 leads you through the ADAPTiQ audio calibration process, which tailors the sound of your LIFESTYLE system and your speaker placement to the acoustics of your listening area. The special headset, designed to be worn above your ears, enables you to take acoustic measurements during the process. Put it on only when Disc 2 indicates. Play both discs when everything is in place and you have made all of the connections. Allow approximately 20 minutes to complete the process. You may want to do it when the acoustic measurements will not disturb anyone. Note: The 220-240V LIFESTYLE 18 Series II system includes Disc 1 only. Owners of that system do not need to follow the instructions for Disc 2 below.

Using the AdaptiQ calibration headset
Select the video input connected to the LIFESTYLE system media center. Lift up the media center front cover and press the Open/Close button. Insert Setup Disc 1 into the tray (label side up) and press the Open/Close button again. On the remote control, press the CD/DVD button. As the disc begins to play, listen carefully and follow the instructions. You will be instructed when to play Disc 2. When Disc 2 indicates, connect the ADAPTiQ calibration headset to the AUX jacks on the connection panel of the media center as shown below.
Put on the headset so it rests above your ears for the greatest comfort during the ADAPTiQ audio calibration process. Disc 2 will explain the procedure you are to follow.
Save the headset for possible future use When you have played both discs and followed their instructions, the installation of your LIFESTYLE DVD system is complete and its performance is tailored to the placement of your system and your listening area. You may want to customize your system again if you move it to another room or significantly change the arrangement of the room by relocating furniture, the speakers, or the Acoustimass module. You can repeat the steps in Finishing the basic installation on page 21 at any time. Keep the headset and discs together in their original carton and store them in a safe location.
System Installation Installing the TV on/off sensor
The TV on/off sensor enables the system to automatically switch the TV on, as needed, when another video source (DVD, cable/satellite box, etc.) is selected. If you choose not to use the sensor, you need to turn on your TV separately. See Figure 19. Note: The TV on/off sensor is not included on LIFESTYLE systems that use SCART connectors. With larger TVs you may want a second person to help as you follow the steps below: 1. 2. 3. Plug the sensor cord connector into the TV SENSOR jack on the media center. Temporarily position the TV on/off sensor on the back of your TV as shown in Figure 19. Test the sensor and enable the feature. See Programming your LIFESTYLE system remote to control your TV in your Operating Guide. A. Turn the TV on. Press the System button on the LIFESTYLE system remote. Access Video/TV power status. B. As one person moves the sensor near the rear vent area of the TV, another person observes when TV Power Status changes from TV not detected to TV ON. C. In the menu navigate to TV Power (directly above TV Power Status). Change this from Manual to Automatic. D. You will need to select the TV brand and device code, as explained in the guide. Note: DO NOT use the mounting strip to permanently mount the sensor until you have tested and enabled this automatic feature as explained in the Operating Guide. Figure 19

To make Component video connections: Plug the two-connector end of the adapter into the S-Video and Composite OUT jacks on the media center. Connect the other end of the adapter to video-grade cables. Connect the free ends of the video cable to the Y, Pb, and Pr jacks on your TV, matching the colors on the adapter appropriately. Note: You need to turn on the progressive scan feature using the display on your media center. To do this, see "Making it all work smoothly in your Operating Guide." You will also need to set your TV for progressive scan. Follow the instructions that came with the TV.
Reference Connecting your VCR to the system
The rear panel of the media center provides audio and video connections for your VCR. Note: If you have already used the video and audio cables supplied with your LIFESTYLE system, or your VCR does not provide any, you need to purchase additional cables. Contact your local electronics store or authorized Bose dealer. Most VCRs have a Composite video output, which is the type of connection explained below. Follow these steps to make the VCR connections: 1. 2. Using audio cables, connect the left (L) and right (R) audio outputs on your VCR to the L and R VCR Audio IN jacks on the media center rear panel. Using a video cable, connect the VCR (Video OUT) to the media center (Composite Video IN). Then use another cable to connect the media center (Composite Video OUT) to the TV. The media center may also be connected to a different input on the TV using an S-Video cable.
You can use an S-Video cable to connect the media center (Video OUT) to your TV, for higher DVD picture quality. The composite connection made in Step 2 above will pass the VCR video to the TV. Remember to select the proper TV input when you change from watching video tapes to DVDs and vice versa. If your media center is connected to the TV using the Component video adapter, you cannot connect a VCR to the media center. Connect it directly to another input on the TV and select that input on the TV to watch videotapes.
Reference Connecting your cable/satellite box to the system
There are various ways to make the cable/satellite connections: 1. Connect cable/satellite L & R Audio OUT to the L & R Audio IN jacks on the media center. If the cable/satellite box has a DIGITAL Audio OUT jack, connect it to the CBL/SAT DIGITAL Audio IN jack on the media center. 2. If the cable/satellite box has an S-VIDEO OUT jack, connect it to the S-VIDEO IN jack on the media center. Use another S-VIDEO cable to connect the S-VIDEO OUT jack on the media center to an S-VIDEO jack on the TV. If the cable satellite box has only a composite VIDEO OUT jack, connect that to the composite VIDEO IN jack on the media center. Connect a VCR to this system as follows: 1. 2. If your cable satellite box has an additional set of Audio and VIDEO OUT jacks connect them to the corresponding Audio and VIDEO IN jacks on your VCR. Connect the VCR to the VIDEO IN jack on the media center. If that jack is unavailable, connect the VCR directly to the TV.

In Figure 22, select Input 2 on your TV to watch cable/satellite programs. Select the CBL/SAT sound source. This input will also provide better video quality when watching DVDs. To watch videotapes, select Input 1 on your TV (or the TV input to which you directly connected the VCR) and select the VCR sound source. If the CBL/SAT box has only a composite VIDEO OUT jack, connect that to the composite VIDEO IN jack on the media center.Connect the VCR composite VIDEO OUT directly to the TV.

Using Component video connections
Follow the connection diagram in Figure 23 to achieve the best video quality for DVD and cable/satellite viewing, while adding a VCR to your home theater. Refer to Component video on page 24, if necessary. To watch DVDs and see LIFESTYLE system menus, select the VIDEO 4 input on your TV, or, if your cable/satellite box has component jacks, connect them as shown in the diagram and select VIDEO 4 on your TV. Select CBL/SAT on your LIFESTYLE system remote. Connect the VCR (VIDEO OUT) to an available VIDEO IN jack on your TV. Select that TV input. Use standard RCA audio cables, matching the white (or black) connector to the L (left) channel and the red connector to the R (right) channel. See Figure 25. If the component is mono, use a Y adapter to connect it to the media center. Appropriate cables and adapters are available at most electronic stores. If the component has a digital output use the corresponding digital input beneath the set of analog (L and R) inputs. You could also use an optical connection, if the component has one. See Figure 27. You must identify the optical source using the System/Media Center/Optical Source menu.

Using digital audio connections
If your TV, VCR, tape deck, or AUX component has digital audio output jacks, you may connect them to the media center. In addition to the digital connection, be sure to connect L and R stereo outputs from the component to the media center. This will provide uninterrupted audio. See Figure 27. For a digital connection, use a 75 cable with RCA connectors (such as a video cable). For an optical digital connection, insert an optical digital cable into the Optical IN on the media center rear panel. Use the Optical OUT jacks on the media center rear panel if you plan to make a digital recording from that component. Note: Before you can listen to a source through the OPTICAL input, you need to assign the OPTICAL connection to that source: TV, VCR, CBL/SAT or AUX. See your operating guide for instructions on using the system menus. Figure 27

If your remote control does not communicate with the media center, the batteries may need replacement or it may be out of transmission range. To extend the range, plug an antenna extender, which may be purchased at an authorized Bose dealer, into its connection on the media center. See Figure 27 on page 30.
Connecting the optional IR emitter cable
The IR (infrared) emitter cable is designed for optional use when a particular component does not respond to LIFESTYLE system remote control commands. That is, the component is connected to the media center, but placed where it cannot receive the IR signals from the media center. The IR emitter can be placed next to one component only. See Figure 27 on page 30. To use the emitter: 1. 2. Insert the 3.5 mm plug into the IR EMITTER jack on the media center panel. Place the flat side of the other end of the cable near the unresponsive component so that the remote control signals reach that component.

How you make it all work together
Connect a Bose link speaker cable from the Bose link jack on the media center to the audio input of the additional equipment (Figure 28). Figure 28
