I have an Onkyo 605 receiver that puts out 90 watts per channel, the cubes can go up to 100 watts. If you are looking for a good 5.

The remote stop working. The heavy magnet used to transmit is soldered & can easily break if the remote is dropped. If you have the cash and looking for something easy to set up, go for it.

Great Product and Easy set up Not much to say except that it works better than expected. I installed it in a closet with a 20ft 3. Nice solution I purchased one of these for my father-in-law to use in a cabinet he re-built. Great little product. Took about 5 minutes to install.

Controlling External Sources Using your LIFESTYLE remote with other components
You can control most brands of external components, such as TVs, VCRs, and cable/satellite boxes, using your LIFESTYLE remote control. You can also designate one of these components as the video tuner (channel selector) for all, to further simplify operation. Your LIFESTYLE system includes an infrared (IR) emitter that sends out signals from the front of the music center to any component that your LIFESTYLE remote is set to control. This allows you to turn on other sources in the room and make basic selections from them, whether they are connected to the media center or to the TV. Note: If a component is located where it cannot receive these IR signals, you can use the supplied IR emitter cable with that component. For tips on getting the IR signals where they need to go, or using the optional emitter, see Connecting the optional IR emitter cable in your Installation Guide.

For TV control

Note: For general guidelines on using the LIFESTYLE System menu, refer to Using System Menus on page 29. Use the TV remote to turn on the TV. Be sure to select the Video input on the TV for the media center. Then, using the LIFESTYLE remote control: 1. 2. 3. 4. Figure 4

*For the Automatic feature to work effectively with North American TV models, the optional TV sensor must be installed and positioned to detect if the TV is on or off. In Europe, a SCART connector serves this purpose. If you do not use a SCART connector, or the TV sensor is not positioned properly, the automatic feature is not an option. In that case, leave the TV power set to Manual. This means you must turn your TV on using its power button or with the LIFESTYLE remote (when it is set to do so). 8. Notice the TV Power Status: TV Detected means the installed TV sensor is working. TV Not Detected means the TV sensor (if installed) is not positioned properly, or a SCART connector is installed. Press System or Exit to leave the System menu. Note: For information on using the TV sensor, refer to Installing the TV on/off detector in your Installation Guide. To check for positioning of the sensor, refer to The media center on page 10

For cable/satellite control
While you can set the LIFESTYLE remote to control both cable and satellite boxes, you must designate one or the other, not both, in the steps below. The one connected to the CBL-SAT input on your media center is the one you should designate. So when you press the CBL-SAT source button and the On/Off button below it, you are operating that device. You can designate the other under AUX Device. Do this only if the device is connected to the AUX input on the media center, or the AUX input is not being used. Note: For general guidelines on using the LIFESTYLE System menu, refer to Using System Menus on page 29. Follow the process below: Turn on the cable or satellite box, whichever you are setting the remote to control. Turn on the TV and be sure to select the Video input on the TV for the media center. Then, using the LIFESTYLE remote control, press the CBL-SAT source button and follow the steps below: 1. Identify the device: From the Remote Control options in the System menu, select CBL/SAT Device. Move right and select either Cable or Satellite by pressing Enter. 2. Press that button again. If the Cable or Satellite box turns off and on again, you have chosen the right code. If it does not turn off, select another code, and press the CBL/SAT On/Off button two more times.* When you have chosen the right code, press the Enter button. Press the System or Exit button to leave the System menu. When you complete these settings, you can use the CBL-SAT On/Off button to turn on your Cable or Satellite source and other LIFESTYLE remote buttons to operate it.
*Some manufacturers use a number of similar device codes. After selecting one, you may find you can turn your Cable or Satellite box on and off, but are unable to change channels or select Play or Pause. In that case, select a different device code that provides more control. 21
For VCR (or DVR) control English
The list of VCR brands and VCR codes include selections for DVRs as well. By following the instructions below, you can set the remote to control one or the other, but not both. If you have both a VCR and a DVR, setting your remote to control the DVR will provide more control options. Whether yours is a standalone DVR or is coupled with the VCR or Cable/Satellite box makes no difference. Note: For general guidelines on using the LIFESTYLE System menu, refer to Using System Menus on page 29. Follow the process below: Turn on your VCR or DVR. Turn on the TV and be sure to select the Video input on the TV for the media center. Then, using the LIFESTYLE remote control, press the VCR source button and follow the steps below. 1. Identify the brand. From the Remote Control options in the System menu, select VCR Brand. Move right into the list of brands and up or down to locate your brand of VCR or DVR. Press Enter to select that brand. 2. Choose a device code: In the menu options on the left, select VCR Device Code. Move right to select the first code. Press the VCR On/Off button on your LIFESTYLE remote. Press this button again. If the VCR or DVR turns off and on again, you have chosen the right code. If the VCR or DVR does not turn off and on, select another code, and press the VCR On/Off button two more times.* When you have chosen the right code, press the Enter button. Press the System or Exit button to leave the System menu. When you complete these settings and select VCR as the source, you can now use the VCR On/Off button and press Play, Pause, or Stop to control your VCR. If you have made the remote settings for a DVR, you can also use the Seek button on the LIFESTYLE remote. On some DVRs, pressing Shuffle and Repeat buttons will allow you to skip backward or forward quickly.

For AUX control

If you have a component connected to the AUX input on your media center, you can set your LIFESTYLE remote to control it, although on and off control is not an option. If you do not have a component connected to AUX, you can still control another device by selecting it from the list of AUX device choices: Changer, Satellite, Cable, DVR, TV or VCR. To exercise this control, you must press the AUX source button first. Note: For general guidelines on using the LIFESTYLE System menu, refer to Using System Menus on page 29.
*Some manufacturers use a number of similar device codes. After selecting one, you may find you can turn your VCR or DVR on and off, but are unable to change channels or select Play or Pause. In that case, select a different device code that provides more control. 22
Follow the process below: Turn on your component. Turn on the TV and be sure to select the Video input on the TV for the media center. Then using the LIFESTYLE remote control, press the AUX source button and continue: 1. Identify the device: From the Remote Control options in the System menu, select AUX Device. Move to the right and up or down in the list to select a component by pressing Enter. 2. Identify the brand: In the menu options on the left, select AUX Brand. Move to the right and up or down in the alphabetical list to locate your brand. Press Enter to select that brand. 3. Select the device code: From the menu options on the left, select AUX Device Code. Move right to select the first code. Press the Play or Channel/Track up button on the LIFESTYLE remote control. If the component responds, press other buttons to make sure important functions on the component also work. If the component does not respond, select a different code and try again. When you have chosen the best code for your component, press the Enter button. Press the System or Exit button to leave the System menu.
Designating one video tuner
If the LIFESTYLE remote controls several video components, you can choose one of them as the primary channel selector. This gets your channel tuning commands to your cable box, even when TV or VCR is selected. You dont need to switch to CBL/SAT to change channels. Note: For general guidelines on using the LIFESTYLE System menu, refer to Making system adjustments on page 29. Make this selection from the Remote Control options in the System menu. In the TV Tuner list, select one of your components. Then press the System or Exit button to leave the menu. Figure 7

Changing Source Settings Making adjustments to a particular source
While watching a video or listening to music on your system, you can make quick adjustments that will increase your enjoyment of the program. For example, you may want to hear more or fewer of the system speakers playing, or boost the center channel volume slightly. For this purpose, each source you use with this system has its own Settings menu, with features appropriate to that source. With a little experience, moving about and selecting options in the Settings menu for each source becomes second nature. Just try it and see.

You can use the actions above to restore the original settings, too. Do this if you do not like the effect of a change you have made, or accidentally made a change you did not intend. The original (default) settings for each source are shown as the first option for each feature on the pages that follow. Note: You can restore all default settings by choosing Restore Settings in the Systems menu, under Media Center. This reverses all changes you have made in both the Settings or System menus. Instead of making this overall change, you can note the default setting listed on the pages that follow, then re-select that setting in any of the sources.
Changing Source Settings Tuner setting options (FM or AM radio)

Introduction Before you begin

English

Thank you for your purchase of a Bose LIFESTYLE DVD home entertainment system. It will serve as the center of your home theater, providing superior audio performance for music and movies. There are four different systems, the LIFESTYLE 18 Series II, LIFESTYLE 28 Series II, LIFESTYLE 38, and the LIFESTYLE 48 systems. All include multiple room connections, most include the AdaptiQ audio calibration system, and the LIFESTYLE 38, and LIFESTYLE 48 systems have the uMusic intelligent playback system. This book shows you: The components included with your system and how to set the system up. The pictures on the next two pages will help you become familiar with each part of your system. First you will set up the audio portion of the system. You will find the best locations for your media center, cube speakers, and Acoustimass module. You will identify and connect the cables that are specific to each part of the system, the AM and FM antennas, and the power cords. How to make a basic connection between your LIFESTYLE system and your television, which will allow you to see the on-screen menus. Your Operating Guide offers information on other aspects of the use of your system. How to power up the system and optimize its sound for the component placement you have selected in your room. How to connect other pieces of equipment, such as VCRs, cable or satellite boxes, DVD changers, game consoles, and recording equipment, to make an even more versatile home theater system. The instructions in this section help you connect your system in your main room. However, if you wish to extend your systems sound to other rooms, read the special considerations in Expanding your system to other rooms on page 32 before you make any connections.
Special indicator used in this book
A box with dotted lines identifies parts which vary with different systems or in different countries.

Unpacking

After unpacking your new system, save all packing materials; they may be useful as a safe way to transport your system. If any part of your system is missing or appears damaged, contact your authorized Bose dealer immediately, or contact Bose directly. Refer to the Bose address list included in the carton. The drawings on these pages show the components of several LIFESTYLE DVD entertainment systems. Your system will have one of the three types of cube speakers shown.

Left and right front speaker placement
To best match sound and picture, the left and right front speakers should be placed at the edge of the TV picture (Figure 3). Place each speaker up to 3 feet (1 m) from the edge of the TV screen and line them up with the center of the TV screen. Bose recommends a maximum distance of 3 feet (1 m) from the edge of the TV screen so that the sound does not become too separated from the picture. You may wish to vary this distance based on room conditions and personal preference. The front cables allow the speakers to be placed up to 20 feet (6.1 m) from the Acoustimass module. Rotate the top cube of each speaker array (or the single cube speaker) toward the wall or in another direction to create reflected sound. See the illustration of reflected sound patterns in Figure 4 on page 9. Figure 3
Recommended speaker locations Center Left front Right front

Figure 5

Single cube speaker placement and reflection rays Left front Center Right front Acoustimass module

Center speaker placement

The center speaker sound should seem to come directly from the center of the picture. The center speaker cable allows up to 20 feet (6.1 m) distance from the Acoustimass module. 1. 2. Place the center speaker directly above or below the center of the TV screen, or at the closest convenient location. Align the speaker with the front of the TV screen (not pushed to the back of the TV).
Note: If placed on top of the TV, attach the protective rubber feet to the bottom of the center speaker.
Surround speaker placement English
The rear surround speakers create an area of sound around the listener. Place them in the back half of your room. Direct both cubes of the speaker array (or your single cube speaker) away from the listeners so that they cannot pinpoint the exact location of the sound source. The surround cables allow up to 50 feet (15.2 m) distance from the Acoustimass module. 1. 2. Place the speakers at ear height (when seated) or higher, if possible. Adjust the rear surround speakers to reflect sound off one or more surfaces.
The longer the path from the speaker to your ear, the better. Do not direct the sound straight at the listener. Note: Bose offers a variety of speaker mounting accessories, including stands and wall brackets. For further information, or to purchase accessories, contact your local Bose dealer or visit www.bose.com. To contact Bose, refer to the address sheet included with your system.

Acoustimass module placement
Note: If the serial number on the bottom of the Acoustimass module is not already printed on your Product Registration card, now is a good time to record it there and in the space provided on page 3 of this guide. Follow these guidelines to select a location for the Acoustimass module: Place the Acoustimass module along the same wall as the TV, or at the same end of the room as the front speakers (refer to Figure 4). Note: To avoid interference with the TV picture, place the Acoustimass module at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the TV. Move it further if you still notice interference. Place the Acoustimass module so that the grille with the Bose logo faces the room or is perpendicular to the wall. This prevents blocking the sound output or creating too much bass. For best bass performance, DO NOT place the Acoustimass module at equal distances from any two walls or centered between the floor and ceiling. For convenience, you may want to slide the Acoustimass module under a table or behind a cabinet. However, DO NOT allow furniture or drapes to block its ventilation openings. CAUTION: DO NOT BLOCK the slots on the end the module, which provide ventilation for the built-in electronic circuitry. Place the Acoustimass module within reach of the audio input cable, speaker cables, and an AC power (mains) outlet.
Put any side of the Acoustimass module on the floor. DO NOT stand it on either end (Figure 6).

Figure 6

Right and wrong placements for the Acoustimass module
BEST For best ventilation, stand it on the narrow side with the connectors facing the floor.
DO NOT stand the module on its slightly curved back end, which can cause it to tip over. DO NOT stand the module on its front grille end. The weight of the module can damage the grille.
ALTERNATE Or, place it on one of the two broad sides.

Ventilation openings

Once you have selected a position for the module, place the four self-adhesive rubber feet near the corners of the bottom surface. The rubber feet provide increased stability and protection from scratches. CAUTION: The magnetic field from the Acoustimass module is not a short-term risk to your video tapes, audio tapes, and other magnetic media. However, you should not store tapes directly on or near the Acoustimass module.
Placing your media center
Note: If the serial number on the bottom of the media center is not already printed on your Product Registration card, now is a good time to record it there and in the space provided on page 3 of this guide. Note: Sending in the product registration card, included with your system, is very important if you want to receive software updates. Be sure to fill out the card and mail it to Bose. Select a location for the media center, keeping in mind the following guidelines: Do not block the front of the media center. Allow enough room to lift up the front cover and open the CD/DVD tray. Also, be sure you have a clear view of the display window on the front of the media center (Figure 7). Place the media center close enough to other sound sources (TV and VCR) to allow for easy cable connections. If you need additional audio or video cables to connect your components, see your dealer or call Bose customer service. Refer to the Bose address list included with your system. Place the media center within 30 feet (9.1 m) of the Acoustimass module (the length of the audio input cable). Note: For convenience, until your system is completely installed, you may wish to place the media center where you have easy access to its rear connection panel.

Reference Using alternate video connections
This section shows you how to set up your home theater system to incorporate additional components, such as VCRs and Cable/Satellite boxes. It also explains different ways to make the connections. Make audio connections from components to the media center. There are three different types of audio connections: the analog (L and R) connection you are probably familiar with, and two types of digital connections, either a coaxial digital (single cable with RCA connectors at each end), or an optical connection. See Using digital audio connections on page 30. A composite and an S-Video connection or a single component connection can be made from the media center to the TV. Your choice of connection will depend on your preference and the type of jacks provided on your TV. Explanations and diagrams on the following pages show variations that you may use in your home theater setup. Connect other video devices directly to the TV. The remaining video connections go directly to the TV (assuming it has multiple connection jacks on its back panel). Composite video This is a standard video input on televisions. To make this connection, use the supplied Video cable (with yellow connectors) to go from the Composite Video OUT on the media center and to a video input jack on your TV. Be sure to note which jack you use on the TV. S-Video An S-Video input jack, provided on many TVs, delivers higher picture quality than composite video output. To make this connection, use the S-Video cable included with your system to connect the S-Video OUT jack on the media center and to the S-Video input on your TV. Component video If your want to use the systems progressive scan feature and your TV has component jacks, you will need to use one of the two Component video adapters provided with your system (Figure 20). This adapter takes three separate video signals (Y, Pr, and Pb) from the media center and makes them available on standard video jacks. The adapter uses both Video out jacks on the media center, so you can only make one component connection to the TV. Video-grade cables from these jacks are not supplied and you will need to purchase them separately. Note: For more information, or to purchase the video cables, contact your local electronics store or authorized Bose dealer. Figure 20

To make Component video connections: Plug the two-connector end of the adapter into the S-Video and Composite OUT jacks on the media center. Connect the other end of the adapter to video-grade cables. Connect the free ends of the video cable to the Y, Pb, and Pr jacks on your TV, matching the colors on the adapter appropriately. Note: You need to turn on the progressive scan feature using the display on your media center. To do this, see "Making it all work smoothly in your Operating Guide." You will also need to set your TV for progressive scan. Follow the instructions that came with the TV.
Reference Connecting your VCR to the system
The rear panel of the media center provides audio and video connections for your VCR. Note: If you have already used the video and audio cables supplied with your LIFESTYLE system, or your VCR does not provide any, you need to purchase additional cables. Contact your local electronics store or authorized Bose dealer. Most VCRs have a Composite video output, which is the type of connection explained below. Follow these steps to make the VCR connections: 1. 2. Using audio cables, connect the left (L) and right (R) audio outputs on your VCR to the L and R VCR Audio IN jacks on the media center rear panel. Using a video cable, connect the VCR (Video OUT) to the media center (Composite Video IN). Then use another cable to connect the media center (Composite Video OUT) to the TV. Cable TV, satellite, or antenna cable TV

IN OUT

Figure 21

VCR connection

The media center may also be connected to a different input on the TV using an S-Video cable.
You can use an S-Video cable to connect the media center (Video OUT) to your TV, for higher DVD picture quality. The composite connection made in Step 2 above will pass the VCR video to the TV. Remember to select the proper TV input when you change from watching video tapes to DVDs and vice versa. If your media center is connected to the TV using the Component video adapter, you cannot connect a VCR to the media center. Connect it directly to another input on the TV and select that input on the TV to watch videotapes.
Reference Connecting your cable/satellite box to the system
There are various ways to make the cable/satellite connections: 1. Connect cable/satellite L & R Audio OUT to the L & R Audio IN jacks on the media center. If the cable/satellite box has a DIGITAL Audio OUT jack, connect it to the CBL/SAT DIGITAL Audio IN jack on the media center. 2. If the cable/satellite box has an S-VIDEO OUT jack, connect it to the S-VIDEO IN jack on the media center. Use another S-VIDEO cable to connect the S-VIDEO OUT jack on the media center to an S-VIDEO jack on the TV. If the cable satellite box has only a composite VIDEO OUT jack, connect that to the composite VIDEO IN jack on the media center. Connect a VCR to this system as follows: 1. 2. If your cable satellite box has an additional set of Audio and VIDEO OUT jacks connect them to the corresponding Audio and VIDEO IN jacks on your VCR. Connect the VCR to the VIDEO IN jack on the media center. If that jack is unavailable, connect the VCR directly to the TV.

In Figure 22, select Input 2 on your TV to watch cable/satellite programs. Select the CBL/SAT sound source. This input will also provide better video quality when watching DVDs. To watch videotapes, select Input 1 on your TV (or the TV input to which you directly connected the VCR) and select the VCR sound source. Note: Additional cables may be purchased at an electronics store or authorized Bose dealer. Figure 22

Using digital audio connections
If your TV, VCR, tape deck, or AUX component has digital audio output jacks, you may connect them to the media center. In addition to the digital connection, be sure to connect L and R stereo outputs from the component to the media center. This will provide uninterrupted audio. See Figure 27. For a digital connection, use a 75 cable with RCA connectors (such as a video cable). For an optical digital connection, insert an optical digital cable into the Optical IN on the media center rear panel. Use the Optical OUT jacks on the media center rear panel if you plan to make a digital recording from that component. Note: Before you can listen to a source through the OPTICAL input, you need to assign the OPTICAL connection to that source: TV, VCR, CBL/SAT or AUX. See your operating guide for instructions on using the system menus. Figure 27

Reference Other jacks on the media center panel
English Connecting an optional antenna extender
If your remote control does not communicate with the media center, the batteries may need replacement or it may be out of transmission range. To extend the range, plug an antenna extender, which may be purchased at an authorized Bose dealer, into its connection on the media center. See Figure 27 on page 30.
Connecting the optional IR emitter cable
The IR (infrared) emitter cable is designed for optional use when a particular component does not respond to LIFESTYLE system remote control commands. That is, the component is connected to the media center, but placed where it cannot receive the IR signals from the media center. The IR emitter can be placed next to one component only. See Figure 27 on page 30. To use the emitter: 1. 2. Insert the 3.5 mm plug into the IR EMITTER jack on the media center panel. Place the flat side of the other end of the cable near the unresponsive component so that the remote control signals reach that component.

How you make it all work together
Connect a Bose link speaker cable from the Bose link jack on the media center to the audio input of the additional equipment (Figure 28). Figure 28
Media center output connection for Bose link speakers
Note: You may need to change the Expansion Protocol setting for the additional speakers. Before using them, refer to instructions in your Operating Guide.
Bose link output jack Connector is marked Bose link A or Bose link B
Note: A Bose link A cable is used to connect the LIFESTYLE system to a Bose SA-2 or SA-3 amplifier. This cable is included with the amplifier. A Bose link B cable is used to connect the LIFESTYLE system to a Bose 321 Series II or Bose Wave radio/CD II.

Full description

The Lifestyle 28 Series III DVD system adds thrilling sound to your movies and music with the combination of performance, elegance and simplicity you expect from Bose. It customizes sound to your room with the innovative ADAPTiQ audio calibration system. The stylish media center features a progressive scan DVD/CD player and AM/FM tuner. Direct/Reflecting cube speaker arrays and a new horizontal center channel speaker fill your room with spacious surround sound. And all Lifestyle DVD systems feature Bose link home networking technology to connect compatible Bose products for a whole-home entertainment solution. From premium performance to elegance, the Lifestyle 28 III DVD system is made for your room - with all its unique characteristics. It includes the ADAPTiQ audio calibration system to deliver a consistent surround sound presentation in any room, while offering greater freedom of speaker placement. This proprietary technology analyzes and adjusts your Lifestyle system's sound to your room's dimensions, speaker placement and preferred seating locations. In a matter of minutes, you'll have Bose quality sound the way you like it. Nice and easy. The brushed silver media center features an integrated progressive scan DVD/CD player and AM/FM tuner. This one unit elegantly accomplishes everything that conventional home theater systems use multiple components to achieve. But it's also the hub of a whole-home entertainment system, made possible by Bose link home networking technology. This home networking technology allows you to connect compatible Bose products to your Lifestyle 28 III system for sound in as many as 14 additional rooms, even outdoors. Because, like you, your sound shouldn't live in one room. With Bose link technology, you can have independent volume control in each room, as well as access to two different audio streams from the same Lifestyle system. Direct/Reflecting cube speaker arrays, standing roughly 6" high, blend nicely with your decor. They combine with a sleek, horizontal center channel speaker to deliver a level of sound you'd expect from much larger speakers. And the Acoustimass module - now 30% smaller than the previous model - reproduces deep, resonant low notes while stationed inconspicuously almost anywhere in your room. The result? Riveting surround sound that seems to come from smaller speakers, whether it's the hypnotic whisper of rustling leaves or the pure power of a ferocious storm. Lifestyle systems are designed to make the most of DVDs and the rest of today's digital media. But you may still hold a spot in your heart for the film or TV classics you have on VHS. Keep them ... and enjoy them. The Lifestyle 28 III DVD system features an integrated suite of signal processing capabilities, including Videostage 5 decoding circuitry and digital 5.1 decoding. Together, they ensure a high-quality, 5.1-channel surround experience from practically any source. Even those recorded well before surround sound was an option. No matter what you want to hear - or where you want to hear it - the Lifestyle 28 Series III DVD system makes it all possible with performance, elegance and simplicity.
