Some things in life are worth waiting for. One such thing is the new top-of-the-range Brax X 2400.2 Graphic Edition amplifier by renowned manufacturer Audiotec Fischer a name synonymous with in-car high-end audio. Following the impressive performance of a pre-production model of this amp in the autohifi special issue High-End 2003, in which it inspired the Brax Graphic Pro speakers in active operation to dizzy heights, we now turn our attention to the production model. Its predecessor, the Brax X 2400, has since 1998 been the standard by which all four-channel amps are judged. Many an heir apparent has fallen by the wayside trying to usurp its position as reference model, notably the DLS A4 and the Kicker SX-900/4, to name but two. Not an easy act to follow, then, for its successor. However, the better is the enemy of the good, as the saying goes, and it is according to this motto that Audiotec Fischer has built the X 2400.2 Graphic Edition. Visually, the Graphic Edition differs from its basic X 2400.2 sister model by virtue of the platinum coloured paintwork on the timelessly beautiful heat sink, which exudes tremendous elegance and value. But it is underneath the splendid exterior that the true worth of this amplifier lies: Peter Starke, designer and father, so to speak, of Audiotec Fischer amps, was not prepared to compromise. Brax is associated with excellence. This exclusive autohifi test shows just how potent the new top model Brax X 2400.2 Graphic Edition really is. The stringent selection of components which applies to other Brax amplifiers is the basis for the lifetime warranty for all Brax amps has been further intensified here the tolerance levels for the Graphic Edition models were set even lower. In the case of the power transistors alone the selection process involved an incredible 200 (!!!) categories crazy stuff! But that was not enough: the OP-amps in the input section had to go. Starke replaced them with Burr Brown high-end models. The intention here was to ensure even better handling of delicate music signals reaching the amp via high-grade, individually mounted RCA sockets. A glance at the interior is enough to bring a tear to the eye of even the most technically uninitiated. The chrome-plated housing of the cast transformer including the choke coils is sure to elicit admiring looks.
But its not just the power supply unit with its large capacitors and fantastic coils which impresses. The power amp section with its 16 high-performance semiconductors, the tidily routed circuit board layout, the components standing in line like so many soldiers, the input section with its Burr Brown OP-amps and the daughter boards assembled using SMD components for the crossover functions will all cause some raised eyebrows. Speaking of crossovers: the circuit control cards (CCCs) typically used in Brax amps for the filter functions are now a thing of the past, as the X 2400.2 Graphic Edition has its own adjustable crossover. These filters, which can be configured as high-, low- or bandpass offer a wide range of settings (two-stage, 15 to 4,500 Hz), additionally provide a cut-off rate switchable between 12 and 24 dB. And thats not all: these filters, just like the input level, can be adjusted separately for each channel! Now you cant get much more flexible than that. After taking stock with profound admiration, it was now time to establish some hard facts on a technical level in the autohifi lab. Here the Brax showed no sign of weakness and excelled with some outstanding test results, for example a very high damping factor. In terms of power capability the X 2400.2 Graphic Edition proved itself to be streets ahead of its predecessor. At 4 ohms impedance the Brax delivered an extremely impressive 4 x 148 watts to its high-grade output terminals. This, however, was nothing compared to the output power at 2 ohms. Here the X 2400.2 Graphic Edition socked a massive 4 x 266 watts to the ballast resistors, equivalent to an incredibly high stability of 79.7%! These results also showed that the manufacturers figures of 4 x 100 watts at 4 ohms and 4 x 180 watts at 2 ohms are very conservative indeed typical Audiotec Fischer understatement. Having concluded the usual preliminaries it was now time to connect the unit to the reference speakers in the autohifi listening room and then just sit back and enjoy. Its not every day that an autohifi editor has the opportunity to experience what the Brax X 2400.2 Graphic Edition has to offer acoustically. First off was Marla Glen with her inspired track "The Cost of Freedom". The bass drum kicks and percussion elements were tight and ultra-precise, the Americans voice authentically masculine and smoky. The superbly recorded CDs by Rebecca Pidgeon ("Four Marys"), Tracy Chapman ("Telling Stories") and Loreena McKennit ("The Book of Secrets") gave the Brax further opportunities to show off its qualities. It displayed matchless dynamic sensitivity and resolution throughout, never resorting to severe or analytical reproduction, and gave the impression of being a touch more harmonious and agreeable at the treble end than its predecessor. The X 2400.2 Graphic Edition showed its dynamic capabilities to good effect during "Walking on the Moon" by The Yuri Honing Trio. Terrific, the way it was able to follow the sudden changes in volume of the snare without any problems many an amplifier would be unable to handle this song. But the Brax is equally in a position to get heavy when needs be, as it proved with the hip-hop tracks by Xzibit ("Man vs. Machine"). The bass riffs and bass drum kicks were incredibly deep and rich and at no point wanting in power. This blackness in the lowest reaches of the frequency spectrum can be reproduced only by genuine highend power amplifiers. It will come as no surprise that the listening session with the Brax took a little longer than was originally intended.

So its official: the Brax X 2400.2 Graphic Edition leaves its predecessor way behind and takes its rightful place on the reference throne as undisputed king of the absolute top-flight four-channel amplifiers. Result: If youre looking for the best four-channel amp in the world, theres no ignoring the uncompromising Brax X 2400.2 Graphic Edition. It combines impeccable appearance, superb finish, top specification, high performance and outstanding sound quality.
