PRODUCT OVERVIEW FOR THE BROTHER HL-2400Ce SERIES LASER PRINTER. This document is designed to explain in greater detail some of the more sophisticated/unique features that we include with the HL-2400Ce Series printer. For convenience, the first section gives a brief overview of the printer's stronger features; it is followed by a more in-depth discussion of the features listed in the first section. In a world where messages fight for attention, color printing adds impact. Once an expensive luxury, it's now an essential everyday business tool. The Brother HL-2400Ce Series color laser printer represents Brother's next generation of color laser technology offering improved print quality, faster data processing, enhanced job re-print and job accounting capabilities. Pin sharp printing is assured at 2400dpi-class resolution, delivering upto 4ppm (full color), 8ppm (two color) or 16ppm (monochrome) printing. The optional LT-24CL lower tray further increases the paper capacity for longer print runs and workgroup use. Duplex printing is catered for manually (by following on screen driver prompts). Built in PCL5C for color printing and PCL 6 for monochrome printing plus BRScript level II (PostScript Level II compatible) and Epson/IBM emulations further enhance the HL-2400Ce Series connectivity options. Optional (Built in for the HL2400CeN printer) 10/100Mbit Ethernet support ensures compatibility with today's and tomorrows network requirements.
1. 2400dpi class color printing
Combined with microfine toner, Brother's Color Advanced Photoscale Technology and our own High Resolution Control System the HL-2400Ce Series printer produces exceptional print quality at up to 16ppm (monochrome) and 4ppm (color).
2. Platform Support and Emulation Support
The HL-2400Ce Series printer is compliant with all Windows environments: Windows 3.1x, Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0 (Windows 2000 users can use our NT 4 printer driver) and also allows direct DOS/other operating system printing via its PCL 5C, PCL 6, HPGL, BRScript level II (PostScript Level II compatible), Epson FX-850 or IBM ProPrinter XL emulations. For added flexibility, the HL-2400Ce Series is also supplied with a Macintosh driver which allows the user to print over an Ethernet network. At the time of writing, the HL-2400Ce Series printer is being tested for Pantone compliance. Please consult the Brother web site to see the current status. 3. Network Control and Support
With seamless support for all popular platforms and protocols, the HL-2400Ce Series offers an on-board network solution making it at home on any 10/100 Ethernet network (Optional for the HL-2400Ce supplied as standard on the HL-2400CeN). The built in web server graphically displays the status of the printer and allows all aspects of the printer to be remotely managed using your favourite web browser. Our BRAdmin32 Windows application can also be used to configure the printer and monitor its status using the TCP/IP or IPX/SPX protocols, auto detecting 10/100BaseTX technology ensures integration into today's and tomorrows network infrastructure. Compatibility with HP's JetAdmin, Web JetAdmin software and SNMP capabilities extend network management even further.

4. Standard and Enhanced Paper Handling
An adjustable paper cassette ensures that a variety of different paper sizes can be used. A manual duplex option allows for duplex printing using the standard paper cassette. Enhanced Paper Capacity For uninterrupted large print runs, the addition of the optional LT-24CL lower tray doubles the paper-input capacity from 250 sheets to 500 sheets.
5. Unique Driver Features
For added flexibility, the HL-2400Ce Series printer also supports Brother's Quick Print Setup utility, a taskbar based application that allows you to change driver properties without having to use the Windows Control panel. Manual duplex allows for duplex printing and Poster print mode enlarges documents to up to A0 size. Multi-page print mode reduces document sizes, using this feature it is possible to print up to 25 pages on to 1 individual page. Additional features include watermarking and electronic form creation via the optional PCMCIA or 2.5" HDD drive. Secure color (using the PCL or Postscript printer drivers supplied) printing lets you configure which users are able to print in color whilst Two color printing allows you to configure your application to print color documents in a choice of two colors.
6. Interactive Help and Technical Support
Our Windows drivers use the latest software technology to assist the user. For example, Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 users can take advantage of pop-up error messages which display Shockwave movie files to guide the user through the replacement of toner cartridges, replacing paper, etc.
7. Automatic Emulation and Automatic Interface Selection
The HL-2400Ce Series printers can automatically switch between the IEEE1284, RS232C and the optional 10/100Mbit Ethernet interface. Auto emulation mode also enables the printer to automatically switch between printer emulations no matter which interface the data arrives on.

8. On Board Memory and Memory Management
The HL-2400Ce Series is well equipped to handle complex documents quickly and efficiently using the 32Mbytes of on board memory. Brother's enhanced memory management technology compresses text and graphic data allowing even the most complex page to be printed. For enhanced workgroup performance the HL-2400Ce Series printer can be upgraded from 32Mbytes to 288Mbytes using standard 100-pin DIMMs. Add an additional HDD and networking-printing performance increases even further as the HDD spools print jobs, releasing the PC application back to the user faster. Configurable Input Buffer A configurable input buffer allows you to configure how much memory each interface is allocated. This allows you to fine tune the printer performance. Simple Job reprint capability The HL-2400Ce series printers have a job re-print capability. This allows you to re-print print jobs that are stored within the memory of the printer without having to keep resending the print job from your computer. For more advanced functionality, install the optional IDE HDD to gain secure re-print and job spooling capabilities.

9. Electronic Forms

For those people who wish to use Electronic forms within their printer, the HL-2400Ce Series PCL drivers allow you to automatically create a electronic form that can be stored on the optional PCMCIA or IDE HDD drive. Our CardMonitor software can be used to manage these forms.

10. Euro Font Support

All HL-2400Ce Series printers support the Euro-symbol from Windows and nonWindows environments.

11. Internet Printing

The HL-2400Ce Series printer can receive e-mail directly from an e-mail server, allowing print jobs to be sent over the internet at a fraction of the price of a FAX document with a print quality of 2400dpi.

12. Bar Code Support

Bar code printing is simple; the HL-2400Ce Series printer is supplied with 11 built in bar codes as standard allowing non-Windows users to print a variety of different industry standard bar codes at no extra cost.

13. FAX Modem Support

For added flexibility, it is possible to connect a 3Com/US-Robotics Modem to the serial interface of the HL-2400Ce Series printers. The printer can then be used to send and receive FAX documents. A simple to use Windows 3.1/95/98/NT 4 driver even allows for Network faxing. If job logging is enabled, all FAX documents that are received and transmitted are logged to the optional PCMCIA HDD or 2.5" HDD. Because the HL-2400Ce Series printers use an internal clock chip, date and time information is accurately recorded.
14. Job Spooling, Secure Re-Printing, Cost Analysis and Electronic Forms storage
Installing an optional 2.5" IDE HDD allows print jobs to be spooled and applications to be released faster. Jobs can then be re-printed using the printer front panel. For ease of use, the HL-2400Ce Series printer even allows the user to re-print jobs using their favourite web browser. Simply connect to the printer using a web browser, select the appropriate user, enter their password and their jobs are then displayed. It is then possible to re-print documents. For users requiring secure re-print through the front panel of the HL-2400Ce Series, simply specify a password for the user, documents printed by that user can only be reprinted by entering their unique password number on the printer front panel. The HDD can also be used to store job information such as the date and time that the job was submitted. It is even possible to see how much toner has been used and how many pages have been printed. With this information it is then possible to calculate the cost per copy using Brother's 32-bit Windows Analysis Software. Electronic Forms and Fonts can also be stored on the optional 2.5" or PCMCIA HDD. Brother's Card Monitor software can then be used to manipulate these electronic forms and fonts. User information such as the date/time that the document was submitted to the printer, the name of the document, the number of pages, even the percentage of CMYK used can be recorded onto an optionally installed PCMCIA HDD or 2.5" HDD. This information can be quickly viewed using a standard Web browser, for more precise analysis the 32bit Brother Analysis Software can be used to calculate printing costs.

15. Additional Free Software
In addition to our BRAdmin32 software, the HL-2400Ce Series is also supplied with the following free software Automatic e-mail print. The automatic e-mail print software is a special utility that installs on a PC which will then poll the e-mail server for any e-mail intended for your personal account and then automatically print it as it arrives. Brother Internet Print software. Slightly different to the automatic e-mail printing software in that the printer is assigned an e-mail address and will then poll a POP3 server for incoming e-mail and print it as it arrives. Peer to peer printing software. Our peer to peer printing software is designed to run on Windows 95/98 computers and allows printing on a peer to peer based network that is using the TCP/IP protocol. Brownie. Brownie, a small utility that allows spooled print files to be re-sent to a single printer or group of printers. Brownie users can also monitor the status of several printers and log their status to a file. Brother CardMonitor. Brother's CardMonitor software can manipulate the printer forms that you may have stored in the PCMCIA or 2.5" HDD. These forms (also referred to as Macros), fonts, signatures, etc. can be transmitted to other printers on your network. Brother Analysis Tool. Our 32-bit Windows application is designed to calculate the cost per copy of all color and monochrome print jobs. Departments or individual users can be tracked and a cost associated with their use of the printer.

The HL-2400Ce Series enables users to print at up to 2400dpi when printing graphics using Brother's CAPT Technology (Color Advanced Photoscale Technology). CAPT enables fine graduation and the neutral tints of illustrations and photographs to achieve photographic-like image quality. CAPT examines every pixel of graphical data and produces the best possible graphics print quality by increasing the tone reproduction of each pixel. Lighter colored pixels are intelligently placed into the document to smooth the color gradation between dark and light colors. CAPT enables printing at up to 256 color shades for accurate and life-like photographic quality. Clever use of cache memory and a super fast 167Mhz CPU ensures that documents are processed quickly at the best possible print quality. For added flexibility, CAPT is available via both our PCL and BRScript (Postscript) printer drivers. HRC (High Resolution Control) is Brothers exclusive print quality enhancement technology. HRC, when implemented improves the print quality of text characters and graphics up to 2400x600 dpi print resolution HRC improves print quality by smoothing out the jagged edges associated with the laser printing process. Using HRC results in smoothing the edges of rounded objects, and users will notice clearer and crisper text printing.
The HL-2400Ce Series printer is supplied with a range of different printer drivers (Windows 3.1/95/98 and NT 4.0, the NT-4 driver will also work with Windows 2000 systems), these drivers have been designed to install easily into their intended operating systems. The HL-2400Ce Series printer is also supplied with a PPD file which allows Macintosh users to print to the HL-2400Ce Series printer over an Ethernet cable when using a LaserWriter 8 driver. Individual users can run the SETUP.EXE program supplied to install the printer driver. However, for people wishing to mass deploy Brother's HL-2400Ce Series drivers, we also provide the necessary INF files which will allow you to install the driver from a Microsoft NT 4 based server or from a Novell 5 server. Please visit the Brother web site for the latest driver information.

Token Ring Support*

For non-Ethernet network, Brother recommends 3 party network solutions from SEH (www.seh.de). SEH manufacture an internal 4/16Mbit Token Ring solution that is compatible with the Brother HL-2400Ce printer. For those customers that require an external Token Ring Interface, we specifically recommend Token Ring print servers from I-data (www.i-data.com). For more information, please contact your local Brother office.

Coax/Twinax Support*

IBM Twinax and Coax users can print directly to their HL-2400Ce printers with the installation of Internal or External Coax and Twinax print servers from I-data. For more information about I-data and their product, please visit www.i-data.com or contact your local Brother office.
*Please note that if you install a internal Token Ring/Coax/Twinax print server from these companies, you must firstly disconnect the NC-3100h Internal 10/100Mbit Ethernet print server. Software utilities described in this document (for example, the Brother Analysis Tool, BRAdmin32 and Brother Card Monitor are not available on Brother printers that use these products.

Manageability

Of-course manageability is key to any network ready product, that's why our HL-2400Ce Series printers include a built in web server with the same kind of feature set that you expect from Brother's network solution (including a FIND ALL PRINTERS operation, the ability to change printer settings such as font, margin settings, sleep mode timeout, etc.). In addition, the HL-2400Ce Series is supplied with our own BRAdmin32 Windows management software. Just like the HL-1270N, HL-1660e, HL-2060 and HL-2400C Series printers, the HL-2400Ce Series printer is HP JetAdmin and HP Web Jet Admin compatible. Users of Enterprise management applications such as HP OpenView can query the printer using the SNMP protocol. For users who are using a terminal with no graphics capability, the HL-2400Ce Series also supports the TELNET protocol.

WWW based Management

Manage the printer using your favourite web browser. No special Brother software is necessary as the built in network solution of the printer acts as a mini-web server allowing Windows and non-Windows users alike to manage their printer.

HP JetAdmin compatibility
Compatibility with HP is always an added benefit to Brother's printer technology. As well as offering PCL 5C and PCL 6 compatibility (Brother was one of the first manufacturers to do this), the HL-2400CeN also supports HP's JetAdmin and WebJetAdmin management software.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
For enterprise wide network management, SNMP support allows you to query the status of the printer using standard SNMP based applications such as HP OpenView or Computer Associates Unicenter software.

As the HL-2400Ce Series printer is likely to be connected to a network environment, or be used with software applications that generate more paper, paper capacity can be doubled by installing the optional 250 sheet lower tray (LT-24CL). This increases paperinput capacity from 250 sheets to 500 sheets.

5. Brother HL-2400Ce Series Driver Features
Our Windows drivers also allow the user to take advantage of many of Brother's unique driver features such as:

Manual Duplex

Imagine that you have a 10-page document that you wish to print in duplex mode (i.e., you want to print on both sides of the paper). Traditionally the only way to do this would be by buying an optional duplex unit and then letting the duplex unit take care of the paper handling printing on both sides of the paper). Brother's HL-2400Ce Series printers tackle this problem in a unique way. When manual duplexing is enabled within the printer driver, the printer will print the pages in a particular order. Going back to our 10-page document example, the printer will print pages 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. When those pages are printed, the printer driver will prompt you to re-insert those pages back into the printer and then print pages 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. The driver takes care of which pages to print, so there is no need to re-order your documents. To enable manual duplex, do the following: Select the "Duplex" tab from the driver, or using the Quick Print Setup program select "Manual Duplex".

Secure Color Printing

You may decide that not all users are able to print their documents is color mode. So the HL-2400Ce series print drivers include the option to disable color printing based on a password. This means that you can control exactly how people use the printer, ensuring that only those who are supposed to print in color are able to.

Fast Two color Printing

When making a draft of a document, it is not always necessary to print everything in full color mode. However printing in color adds life to a document, the Brother HL-2400Ce series printer drivers allow you to print in 2-color mode. This means that any color in your document will be converted to Black and Cyan, Black and Magenta or Black and Yellow.

Quick Print Setup

As we introduce more and more features to our printer drivers, it can sometimes take a little time to find your way around a driver. To help you, we have created a small application that lives on your taskbar when activated; this allows the user to quickly change settings without having to go into the actual driver.

For example, if you wish to select poster print mode, click one of the left four icons. If you wish to use 2 in one printing (2 pages will be printed on one single page, select the second icon labelled "2 in 1". To change other settings, right click the printer icon and the following is displayed:

When writing user guides, we do our utmost to make them as easy to understand as possible, however, we realised that we could go even further in terms of help. Brother's unique Interactive Help system (which is available on locally connected HL-2400Ce Series printers) is your personal on-line support system available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Figure 11 Help file and Shockwave Movie Animated Shockwave movies appear on your desktop, demonstrating to you how to perform basic operations such as replacing toner cartridges, clearing miss-feeds etc. The driver is installed using the SETUP.EXE program from the CD-ROM supplied with the printer. If a disk set has been created from the CD-ROM, the interactive help files will also be copied to the disk set.

For those people who wish to use Electronic forms within their printer, the HL-2400Ce Series printer can use an optional PCMCIA or 2.5" HDD. This storage can be accessed using Brother's Card Monitor software, which allows the print administrator to connect to the printer on a TCP/IP based network. Once connected, macros can be downloaded to the printer, or copied from one printer to another over a network connection. By using Macros, it is possible to store electronic forms, letterheads, signatures, fonts, etc. inside the memory of the printer, these macros/fonts can then be executed at a later date. Forms creation is handled by the Brother printer driver using the Macro Settings option. Forms Creation Form creation is easy. Follow these simple steps: Step 1: Create the form template in your Windows application.
Step 2: Specify the Save to memory, Save to PCMCIA option or the Save to HDD option within the Brother printer driver. The form that you created will now be stored in the printer memory or PCMCIA HDD. Step 3: Now using your Windows application, enter the data that you wish to be overlaid onto the form you created in step 1.

Step 4: Now select the Insert Macro command and specify if you wish the macro to be overlaid on all pages, or on a specific page.
The printer will now overlay the macro that you created in steps 1 and 2 with the data that you created in step 3
Forms can be saved in the optional PCMCIA HDD, or in the printer memory. The advantage of using the PCMCIA HDD is that even if the printer is powered off it will still retain the electronic form, however, forms stored in the memory of the printer will be erased if the printer is powered off. Other advantages are: Save valuable network bandwidth by storing electronic forms inside the printer. Only data that changes needs to be sent to the printer. Logos, forms, signatures and fonts that are stored in the printer can simply be executed by selecting the appropriate option in the Windows PCL driver. Maximum of 16Gbytes HDD storage. The HL-2400Ce Series printer can use a PCMCIA HDD (maximum capacity: 2Gbytes) or a 2.5" HDD (maximum capacity 16Gbytes). Please contact your Brother re-seller for more information. Simple to use Windows applications. Our own CardMonitor software is supplied with all HL-2400CeN printers as standard. Printer Driver Support. Our Windows PCL printer drivers can automatically create macros from any Windows application. Simply click the macro option in the Brother driver and a form is automatically generated and stored into the PCMCIA or 2.5 HDD.

For those users who wish to print bar codes, the HL-2400Ce Series printers are supplied with 11 built in bar codes as standard: Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, EAN-8, EAN 13, UPC-A, EAN-128, UPC-E, Codabar, USPostNet, ISBN and Code 128. To access these bar codes use the following control codes (for more technical instructions, download the control code guide from the Brother web site).

This bar code command can have the following parameters in the parameter segment (n. n). Parameters are effective only within the single command sequence using the syntax ESC i n. n }. They do not take effect in any subsequent bar code commands. If any parameters are not specified, they take the default settings. The last parameter must be the bar code data start identifier (b or B) or the expanded character data start identifier (l or L). Other parameters can be specified in any sequence. The Brother HL-2400Ce Series printer can be used as a departmental FAX machine with the inclusion of a 3Com/US-Robotics modem. Simply connect the modem to the serial interface of the printer and the printer can receive and send fax jobs. Brother's own Windows 3.1/95/98/NT 4.0 FAX driver software can even be used to send FAX jobs from a user's PC over your network. As the HL-2400Ce Series printer includes an internal hardware clock chip, date and time information is accurately recorded to the optional PCMCIA HDD or optional 2.5" HDD. Network ready versions of the HL-2400CeN printer can then use the Brother Analysis Tool software to analyse which incoming and outgoing faxes are sent to/from the HL2400Ce series printer.

By installing an optional PCMCIA (ATA type) or 2.5" IDE HDD drive you extend the printers functionality even further by adding secure re-printing; cost analysis capability electronics forms and font storage. Job Spooling (IDE HDD type only) Usually when print jobs are submitted to the printer, data is spooled in the computer responsible for printing the job. This computer must communicate with the print until all data has been delivered. Usually this data can be passed to the printer memory very quickly, however, once the printer memory becomes full, the data must wait on the computer until there is more memory available inside the printer. In longer print runs, and especially with color printing, this can have some kind of performance overhead on the computer that is sending the data. To reduce this problem, the HL-2400Ce Series printer can be fitted with an optional IDE 2.5" HDD. Data is then spooled to the HDD instead of the printer memory. This allows the printer to receive huge amounts of data (up to 16Gbytes if the printer is fitted with a 16Gbyte HDD 2.5" HDD). The printer simply looks at the HDD contents of the printer during the print run. As new jobs arrive, they are processed quickly and efficiently. Because the HDD is used as a high speed spooling device, the jobs can also be retained inside the printer for future use. For example, if the user selects the "keep data" option within the printer driver, data is spooled to the printer, printed and then stored in a special folder within the HDD. If the user wishes to re-print the data, they simply select the reprint option from the printer front panel and then the job is re-printed. As the user does not have to re-submit the print job from their original computer application, printing is performed in a fraction of the time. Secure Re-Print (IDE HDD type only) One important aspect to this type of printing is that the user can specify if they would like to password protect their print data. For example, selecting the "Private" option within the driver causes the documents to be stored on the HDD. Those documents can then only be printed if the user knows the password for this file. To re-print a secure job, the user simply walks to the printer, selects the re-print option from the printer front panel and selects the appropriate user name followed by the password for that user (a 4 digit password). The user can then see their print jobs and they can chose to re-print documents using the easy to use front panel. To control these options, simply select the appropriate option within the printer driver If the user prefers it, they can also connect to the printer using a web browser and walk through user areas (which can be password protected) and select the file that they wish to print.

Brownie (Brother Own Instant Explorer) Brownie is a Windows based application that allows you to send pre-compiled print files to a single or group of computers. For example, anyone wishing to re-print multi-page documents may become frustrated waiting for their PC to release the applications whilst the print data is being spooled to the hard disc or network share. By using Brownie, the user can simply print the document to a special file and then Brownie can be used to send the file to the printer by dragging the file to the printer icon. At the same time, it is possible to monitor the status of locally connected printers or network connected printers using Brownie's status monitor tool. Printer activity can then be logged to file for further analysis.

Q. Can I use the same consumables that I use on my HL-2400C/CN printer? A. Yes, the HL-2400Ce/CeN printers use the same consumables as the HL-2400C/CN printer. Q. The HL-2400Ce Series is supplied with 32Mbytes of memory, I heard that the onboard network solution for the printer is using 2Mbytes of memory, does that mean that the printer has only 30Mbytes of memory as standard? A. No, the HL-2400Ce Series uses a separate area of memory for network protocols. This separate area of memory consists of 2Mbytes of FLASH memory. Because we are using FLASH memory, the network portion of the HL-2400Ce Series can be reprogrammed very easily as we introduce more network features to this product. Q. I have a non-Windows application and I want to print, what can I do? A. The HL-2400Ce and HL-2400CeN printers support PCL5e and PCL 6 as well as Epson FX-850 and IBM ProPrinter emulation's and BR-Script Level II (Brother's BRScript level II emulation).
Q. Does the Brother Macintosh driver support Manual duplex printing? A. Yes. Q. The Brother HL-2400C series color laser printers were pantone certified, when will the Brother HL-2400Ce series printers support Pantone calibration? A. Yes, Brother's Windows and Macintosh drivers support the Euro symbol. For those users writing their own printer driver, you can use the following character set to print the Euro symbol. Q. Does this mean that Windows users and non-Windows users, such as Macintosh users, can print the Euro-symbol? A. Yes it does. Q. I want to connect a PC to the parallel interface of the HL-2400Ce Series, another PC to the Serial interface and also connect the printer to my Ethernet network using the builtin 10/100 Ethernet print server of the printer, what will happen? A. All Brother's laser printers support AUTOMATIC interface selection. This means that if the printer receives data through the parallel interface, it will automatically switch to that interface, however, after receiving data from the interface, the printer reverts back to scanning all available interfaces. This means that whichever interface receives data first will be used. After the print job is finished, the printer will scan all available interfaces again. The end result is that it is possible to send data to the printer using all three interfaces, but only one interface will be processed at a time.

Q. What is the difference between the "Automatic e-mail printing" software and the "Brother Internet Print software"? A. The Automatic e-mail printing software is designed to work on printers that are connected to the parallel interface of the computer. Basically, software on the PC scans incoming e-mail using the POP3 protocol. As e-mail arrives, it is then sent to the Brother printer through the parallel port. E-mails sent to your user account will be printed. Brother's Internet print software relies on software inside the printer to scan a POP3 server. This means that you can create an e-mail address for the printer and then send print jobs to the printer using Brother's Internet Print client software on the sending PC. E-mails sent to the printer e-mail address will be printed.
