PW:Oh.Aftermyfirstyear,sinceIdhadfouryearsinLatin,Igotascholarshipforbeinganassistant forthatandthenmeetingclasseswithDr.BowenwhenhedidntgetbackfromRichmondintime,hed usuallycomeinonthetraintosignsomething.Butanyway,andthenaftertwoyearsofchemistry,I had,whatdotheycallthem,anassistantshipinthelab.SoIhadtwoofthem.Andatthattime,along withityougotafreepassontheRF&PfromRichmondtoWashington.But,soIhadtwo,youcouldonly getitoneway.Iwantedtoget,sinceIhadtwoIthoughtIbeentitledtoonecomingandgoing,but theywouldntgivemebuttheone.SoIcouldgetapasstoridethetrainfreegoingintoRichmond,butI hadtobumaridecomingback. JS:Theystilltrytoavoideightoclockclassesiftheycan. PW:ButyoutriednottogetSaturdayclassesifyoucould,somecoursesyoutookyoudidnthaveto takeSaturdayclasses.AlltheonesthatItookwereregularSaturdayclasses.Chemistrywaseight oclockSaturdaymorning,andthenyouhadlabintheafternoon.Idontknowhowtheylearnanything now,theyreinschoolsolittle. JS:So,whatdidyoudoaftergraduation? PW:IoriginallyroomedwithReggieJones,whosefatherwasalawyerinHopewellandwasonthe schoolboard.Iwassupposedtogetajobwithhim;Ididnthaveajobandhearrangedformetoteach historyandphysicsatHopewellHighforninetydollarsamonthfortenmonths,butIdecidedthatIdtry somethingelse.Afellowacoupleyearsaheadofme,JohnHolman,hadgone,wasinchemistryand hedgonetoworkforDuPontinNewJerseyandIwrotehimandaskedhimaboutanyjobsupthereand hewrotebackandgavemethenameofthedirectorofthelab,and,soIwrotehimandhegavemean appointmenttocomeup,whichIdid,andspentawholedaywithhim,andhedecidedhewouldgiveme ajob.ButIsaidwhendoIstart,andhesaidyouonlygettwoweeksvacationsoyoubettertakewhat youwantbeforehand.SoIwantedtosetitforthefirstofSeptember,andhesaid,wellwecoulduse youthissummer,soIendedupstartingthefirstofAugustinNewJersey.Anditwasabigjob.Igot140 amonth. JS:Betterthan90. PW:Itwasbetterthan90amonthinHopewell.Ofcourse,itcostalittlemoreinNewJersey,butnot thatmuchmore.So,Ididthatfor,letssee,thewarcamealong,Iwasessential.ButbythattimeI decidedthatIwasntsureIwantedtostayinindustry.AtthattimetheyinstitutedinHoboken,New Jersey,Icantthinkofthenameofit,butincomingtoPennsylvaniaforsomanydays,andtheydgive youtheseaptitudetests.SoIfoundoutaboutthatandwentoverthereandspentthedaydoingtests.
