Military Style Assault Weapons Have No Place in Our Society
STOPPING SEMI-AUTOMATIC ASSAULT WEAPONS
On September 13, 1994, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was signed into law, establishing legislation by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to stop the future manufacture, transfer and possession of military-style semi-automatic assault weapons -- guns that fire dozens of rounds of ammunition in seconds. Senator Feinstein wishes to acknowledge the groundbreaking legislative work of former Senators Howard Metzenbaum (DOH) and Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), without whom passage of this legislation would not have been possible.
Semi-automatic assault weapons are turning Americas streets into warzones. The time has come to stop the proliferation of weapons of war and fear on our streets, while still protecting the rights of those who collect or hunt and use weapons for target, sporting or other legitimate recreational purposes. s Senator Dianne Feinstein

s SUMMARY s

The ban of military-style, semi-automatic weapons stops the future manufacture, transfer and possession of: s 19 deadly types of common semi-automatic assault weapons, originally designed to meet the military need for high ammunition capacity weapons capable of rapid fire at close quarters; Copycat models of banned weapons; Any weapon with a combination of specific assault features; Any ammunition clip, magazine or other device that holds more than 10 rounds.
s STOPPING COPYCAT GUNS s This legislation stops the proliferation of copycat models of banned weapons. All semi-automatic assault pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and 2 or more assault characteristics, as well as semi-automatic shotguns with 2 or more such characteristics, are banned under this legislation. Assault characteristics for each of these weapons are: RIFLES

This legislation also explicitly protects: s s s s s 670 hunting and other recreational rifles; Any gun that is manually operated by a bolt, pump, lever or slide action; Any semi-automatic rifle or shotgun that cannot accept a detachable magazine that holds more than 5 rounds; Antique weapons; Use of semi-automatic assault weapons by police officers and other law enforcement officials.
