What is Network Attached Storage (NAS)?
Network attached storage (commonly abbreviated to NAS) are storage devices that can be accessed over a computer network (usually TCP/IP), rather than directly being connected to the computer (internal hard drives or external USB/SCSI drives). NAS devices enable multiple computers to share the same storage space at once. These devices are assigned an IP address and can then be accessed by clients (PCs or laptops) via a server that acts as a gateway to the data (this server is within the NAS device and hence NAS devices are often referred to as NAS servers). Some of the big advantages of NAS include the expandability; if you need more storage space, add another NAS device and expand the available storage. They also bring an extra level of fault tolerance to the network. Fault tolerant measures such as RAID can be used to make sure that the NAS device does not become a point of failure. NAS systems often contain more than one hard disk drive, often arranged into logical, redundant storage containers or RAID arrays for added redundancy/security - thus protecting data in the case of disk failure.

What is Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)?
The basic idea of RAID is to combine multiple small, inexpensive disk drives into an array of disk drives which performs better than a single large expensive drive. The array of drives appears to the computer as a single drive. Disk arrays can be made fault-tolerant by redundantly storing data i.e. duplicating all or part of the data stored over the drives. So if one of the disks fails the data is still preserved over the good disks which are left. There are several forms of RAID, all provide disk fault-tolerance and each form offers different trade-offs in features and performance.

Setting up a secure wireless network has always been difficult and complicated. Until now! Buffalos AirStation OneTouch Secure System (AOSS) does all the tedious, technical stuff for you, making setting up a secure wireless network as easy as pushing a button. The AirStation One-Touch Secure System (AOSS). With AOSS, users can set up the securest wireless network possible, easily and quickly. AOSS automatically detects and configures other AOSS enabled wireless devices and clients and seamlessly negotiates the most secure connection possible between your wireless devices.

(1) Press the AOSS button on the access point to initiate the AOSS session.

Done! - A secure connection is automatically established between the access point and the wireless client.
When two or more AOSS clients attach to the AOSS network, the client and router automatically negotiate the highest level of security that the clients and router can support. In the above example, one of the AOSS clients supports both WEP and WPA level encryption (TKIP and AES), while the other supports only WEP. AOSS automatically adjusts the security to a level that both clients support. All Buffalo wireless products support WPA level of security.

What is DLNA?

Every home is becoming increasingly rich in digital content, and every user has their own individual way of managing that content. For example, one user might choose to view a family movie or slideshow on the TV, whilst another might prefer to watch it on their mobile phone handset. Problems arise, however, when users want to store and share this digital content between family members and different rooms within the home and across any manner of different digital devices - and they dont want to be restricted to a single device manufacturer to do this. The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) has been set up to provide interoperability guidelines for the digital home, enabling PC, mobile and consumer electronics products to work seamlessly together, irrespective of the manufacturer. It means that products complying with these guidelines can operate and interact with other compliant devices, ultimately realising the digital home concept that is talked about so often amongst consumers and the press.
