What is Acacia Gum or Arabic Gum ? Some of our liquorice products are not the cheapest but are certainly the best due to the use of Acacia Gum. The secret of these high quality products can be found in the fabrication and in the recipes, but most of all in the chosen ingredients. Joris is one of the few companies that still uses acacia gum as one of the ingredients. Acacia gum is a resin from the acacia tree that grows in African countries such as Sudan, Niger, Chad, Senegal, etc. Acacia gum is an excellent thickener, but it is also very expensive. Acacia gum is highly nutritious and very low in calories. Over the years because of the price of the ingredients becoming very expensive, most manufacturers have replaced the Acacia Gum with wheat and potato starches. Unfortunately this substitute does not offer the advantages of the acacia gum, which does not stick, easily dissolves in the mouth and has an outstanding flavour.
Holland is to Liquorice what Belgium is to Chocolate. The Dutch just love their liquorice. They eat more liquorice per year than chocolates or chocolate bars. The Dutch, The Germans and The Scandinavians like their salt liquorice.
