Before using your CanonetG-III 17, load the mercury battery. To open cover of the battery compartment, inserta fingernail in the open slot, slidingthe cover in the d i r e c t i o n o f t h e a r r o w. B y u s i n ga slight pull outward, the coverwill open. 3
Insert the battery on the tab in the compartment. I Be sure the mercury battery is inserted only in the correct direction. r A 1.35V M20 (#625) mercury battery should be used-equ ivalent t o t h e M a l l o r y P X - 5, o r E v e r e a d yEP X - 5. Presscover to close.
R e p l a c i n gB a t t e r y W h e n r e p l a c i n gt h e m e r c u r y b a t tery, open the cover of the 1 m e r c ur y b a t t e r y c o m p a r t m e n t and slowly pull out the tab being careful not to let the battery r drop out. C a n o n ' s E x c l u s i v eO u i c k - L o a d i n S( O t ) m e c h a nism in the Canonet G-III 17 accepts any standard 35mm film roll in cartridge. When loading new film, always avoid direct sunlight. To release the latch of the back cover, raise the film rewind crank, and pull it all the way up.
Open the cover fully. When the back cover i s o p e n e d ,t h e O L c o v e r o p e n s s i m u l t a n e o u s l y. Face the film cartridge as illustrated in the line drawing inside the back cover, and insert it into the cartridge compartment. Push the crank back to its normal Position.

Bring down the OL cover to hold the film in place by closing the back cover. Look through the sprocket window to see if the f ilm is correctly engaged with the sprocket. Wind the film advance lever until it stops. The first frame is now automatically in posttton.

Focusing While looking through the viewfinder, turn the focusing lever. The subject is in focus when the double image merges into one p r e c i s ei m a g e i n t h e c e n t e r o f t h e v i e w f i n d e r.

I lf the indicator points to the underexposure warning mark, turn the shutter speedring clockwise until the indicator moves to the proper exposure range, or use the Canolite D or other flash units. T h e C a n o li t e D i s a n o p t i o n a l e l e c t r o ni c flash unit with direct contact exclusively d e s i g n e d f o r t h e C a n o n e t G - I I I 1 7. T h e r e i s absolutely no necessity to worry about g ui d e n u m b e r s. N i g h t o r i n d o o r p h o t o g r a p h y is now as easy as daylight photography using the CanoliteD.
By simply attaching the Canolite D, the camera, wh ile set at " A" , is switched over to the automatic flash control circuit, and the proper f/stop corresponding to the shooti n g d i s t a n c ei s a u t o m a t i c a l l y s e t.

t Do not use f lash bulb (or unit) with following types of film becauseit does not couple properly. Flash bulb of guide number 14 with ASA 25 film, guide number 20 with ASA 8OO, and guide number 28 with ASA 40O or higher speeds.
r In flash photography using a conventional electronic flash unit or flash bulb when the proper f/stop is set according to the guide number, there is a heavy drain on the mercury battery. Therefore, be sure to return the aperture ring to the " ^" position after shooting. I When the subject is too far or too close, the shutter button cannot be depressed.

For manual control of the aperture, release the aperture ring from the "A" position. The shutter speed and f/stop can be freely set for a c h i e v i n g s p e c i a l i z e dt e c h n i c a l e f f e c t s. W i t h the Canonet G-III 17, special effects in high tone or low tone can be obtained in the same manner as with more professional cameras.
I In manual exposure control, the position of the exposure indicator is in the upper red mark.
Using Self-timer
T h e C a n o n e tG - I I I h a sa b u i l t - i n s e l f - t i m e r. To operate the self-timer,turn the self-timer lever in the direction of the arrow until it s t o p s. T h e s h u t t e r w i l l b e r e l e a s e da p p r o x i mately 1O seconds after the shutter button has been pressed.
I The self-timer also operates when taking p i c t u r e sw i t h f l a s hu n i t s. I lf the self-timer lever is set, do not return it to the normal position. lt is automatically returned,after the picture is snapped.

Pressthe shutter button gentlY. The shutter will remain open as long as the shutter button is pressedand will close when the shr.ltterbutton is released. I When an extended time exposure is being made, use the Canon Release, and tripod, to avoid blurred pictures.

W h e n t h e f i l m r e a c h e st h e e n d a n d t h e f i l m advance lever stops, rewind the f ilm into the cartridge as soon as possible. Be sure not to open the back cover before rewinding; otherwise, the entire roll will be exposed and ruined since the film will be exposed within the camera. Raise the film rewind crank, turning it in the direction of the arrow, until the film is completely rewound in the cartridge.
