I've only had the printer a month, but I think it's great! I get goreous photo prints. Some say footprint too large. Come on, you're replacing a printer AND a scanner. For me, I replaced three items - a B&W laser, a color ink jet. Everyday printing on small scale. Easy Setup","Easy To Use","Fast Print Time","Reliable

Chapter 1

Toolbox Basics

What is the Toolbox?
ScanGear Toolbox 3.0 (the Toolbox) is a program that makes your scanner faster and easier to use. Without the Toolbox, for example, you would have to perform each of the following steps if you wished to scan and display a page from a magazine in an image editing application program.
Start the application program. Start the scanner driver program. Set the detailed scan settings. Initiate the scan. Close the driver program.
View the scanned image in the application program.
You can perform the same functions with the following steps using the Toolbox.
Start the Toolbox. Select a function button in the main window. Set a few simple settings in the settings dialog. Initiate the scan.
As you can see, the process is simplified with the Toolbox.
You can simplify it even further by using the Scan button on the scanners front panel.
Press the SCAN button on the scanner.
(The Toolbox will start and automatically perform the entire process)
As this demonstrates, the Toolbox makes it considerably easier and faster to use your scanner.

Copying (Printing)

A dialog like the one below will display.
This function scans and prints the image in a single integrated step. Follow the procedures below to start copying an image. Start the Toolbox and click the [Copy] button.
The settings in this dialog are explained on the following pages.

Copy Settings (1/5)

This topic explains the settings in the Copy dialog.
Scanner Settings - Image Type
Select a scanning mode. Black and White: Scans and expresses the image in two colors, black and white. Grayscale: Scans and expresses the image in black and white and various shades of gray between these two colors. The result is similar to a monochrome image. Color (Auto crop): (Windows only) Automatically sets the paper size, sets the Image Quality to 300 dpi and expresses the image in color.
Moir patterns (striations or a wavy effect) can appear when some printed items are scanned. The Descreen function reduces this effect. Scanning takes longer with the Descreen function on.

Copy Settings (2/5)

Scanner Settings - Image Quality
This setting determines the resolution (fineness) at which a scanned image is reproduced. Draft (150 dpi/75 dpi): Scans at 150 dpi when Black and White or Grayscale mode is selected. If this setting is left unchecked, clicking the [Copy] button at the dialogs bottom right starts the scan immediately. What Scan Settings Are Used?
You may wish to know what settings are used when a scan is initiated by simply pressing a scanner button. What image type is selected? What are the Image quality and Paper size settings? The answer is the latest settings that have been specified. For example, if you start the Toolbox you can click the [Copy] button in the main window and set the Image type to Grayscale, the Image quality to Standard, and the Paper size to A5 Portrait in the settings dialog. When you press the Copy button on the dialog, the scan will start and transfer the image to the printer. The next time you press the scanners (Copy) button, the item will be scanned and copied with the latest settings. Namely, the Image type will be set to Grayscale, the Image quality to Standard, and the Paper size to A5 Portrait.
Clicking the [Cancel] button will terminate the scan and display the settings dialog. You can then adjust the settings and restart the scan.
If you want to adjust the scan settings without initiating a scan, please perform the following procedure in advance. 1. Start the Toolbox and click the desired button in its main window. 2. Adjust the settings in the settings dialog. 3. Click the [Apply] button, then click the [Cancel] button.
Changing the Functions of Scanner Buttons (1/2)
Click the arrow of the list box under the scanner button to which you wish to assign the function and select the desired function from the list.
The scanner buttons can be assigned to a different Toolbox function. For example, people that find themselves needing to scan numerous items and save them as image files to a particular folder may wish to assign the Save function to the (Scan) button. This topic explains how to assign a different function to a scanner button.

Start the Toolbox. Its main window will display. Click the [Settings] button.
Changing the Functions of Scanner Buttons (2/2)
This will change the buttons function.

Click the [OK] button.

Selecting the [Show Toolbox] option as the button function causes the Toolbox main window (the window shown above) to display when that button is pressed. Click the [Defaults] button to restore the settings to the default options.

1. Make sure the scanner is on (blue light on front). 2. Place your print face-down on the scanner glass (note arrow for location) 3. Launch CanoScan Toolbox from the START menu (Do not use the buttons on front of scanner. The buttons are best suited for home users who can program them accordingly.)
4. Click on the Save button as shown below.

5. Choose the Scan Mode:

Scan Mode: Choose Black and White if you have a black & white illustration with no screened areas or variations in tone. Choose Grayscale if you have grey or screened areas. Choose Color if your print is in color and you want it to reproduce in color. Choose Color (Magazine) if you are scanning color pages from previously printed materials. Continued

7. Click the Browse button. 8. Browse to the folder you want to scan your document into. In this example, we are choosing the Z: drive instead of the D: drive.
9. Click the Scan button. Scanning will begin as shown above. When finished, the folder you have saved your scan into will open as shown below. You can double-click on your file to view it.

Troubleshooting Tip

If, after scanning a document, you are presented with an unable to open file or selected application invalid error message*, do the following: Follow steps 1-4 again. When presented with the window shown at left, note if the External Program field states Save as File Only. If it does not, click the Delete button as indicated to reset the software to Save as File Only.
*This may occur if you modify the CanoScan software settings on one computer and then try scanning on another computer that does not have the same software. If you scan on more than one computer it is not recommended to change any settings from the default.
