I bought this camera a while back to video tape racing. It works really well for what I do, and for not knowing a lot about all cameras.

Used it for years to videotape plays Comfortable to Operate, Durable, Great Sound, Simple Controls, Versatile I have had problems with this camera. It gets its job done most of the time, but my audio speakers for playback have stopped working.

Record Your Precious Memories the Simple Way

www.canondv.com

A New Era in Personal Digital Video
The ZR50 MC , ZR45 MC , and ZR40 take advantage of the latest digital video technology, yet are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Sporting a sleek body design, and an extensive list of features, these camcorders provide exceptional results, and are remarkably easy to use. Canon's attention to detail guarantees a flawless shooting experience, seamless connectivity, and endless creativity.

DV Format

Enter the world of DV and realize truly amazing picture and sound quality. Images reaching up to 500 line horizontal resolution reveal stunning detail and clarity. Clearly superior quality than even the best analog camcorders, by 20% at least, and free from annoying color noise. DV is the right format, right now!
22x Optical Zoom Lens plus 440x Digital Zoom (ZR50 MC ) 18x Optical Zoom Lens plus 360x Digital Zoom (ZR45 MC /ZR40)
This Canon optical zoom lens perfectly transforms distant subjects into dramatic close-ups with absolutely no loss in image quality. The digital zoom extends the magnification to an amazing 440x (ZR45 MC /ZR40: 360x)* revealing details too distant to be seen with just the eye alone. The scope from wide panorama to super telephoto is outstanding.

Image Stabilizer

A high quality image stabilization system corrects camera shake instantly, giving you smooth, stable pictures. It enables you to record shake-free images, even on long telephoto shots without a tripod.

Effortless Multimedia Connectivity

IEEE 1394 DV Terminal

The ZR50 MC , ZR45 MC and ZR40 are equipped with a DV IN/OUT terminal that conforms to IEEE 1394. It takes just a single digital cable to transfer or copy your videos in pure digital form to your DV compatible computer or another Canon DV camcorder. Once youve transferred video images to your computer, you can edit your movies or send your movies over the Internet, or post them on your Web site. Also, print them out on a Canon color printer, transfer them back to your Canon camcorder and archive them on a Mini DV cassette, or create a dubbing master.
USB Terminal (ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC only)*
Allows high speed transfer of memory card data to computers through the USB terminal. By using the USB cable and software provided, you can process and organize still images on your PC. The camcorder functions as a memory card reader/writer. Bundled software: ZoomBrowser EX (Windows) / ImageBrowser (Macintosh). You can easily download, browse, archive and retouch still images. Automatically resize images and attach them to e-mail, arrange them for printing, and add text anywhere on the page.
*System requirements: Interface: USB: only preinstalled Windows 98/Windows Me/Windows 2000/Windows XP systems with built-in USB ports, or only systems equipped with genuine Apple-brand built-in USB interfaces. Operating System Windows 98 Windows Windows Me/ Windows 2000 Windows XP Macintosh 8.69.2 CPU RAM 150MHz or better 32MB or more 150MHz or better 64MB or more 300MHz or better 128MB or more PowerPC 20MB or more Operating System Free hard disk space Windows ZoomBrowser EX 120MB or more PhotoStitch 40MB or more Macintosh ImageBrowser 20MB or more PhotoStitch 30MB or more

MultiMediaCard and SD Memory Card (ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC only)*
The ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC expand video possibilities by using a MultiMediaCard or an SD (Secure Digital) Memory Card in addition to a Mini DV cassette. These ultra-small and ultra-light media record, store and manage still images, as well as allow easy transfer of still images to a PC with the camcorder. Use an SD Memory Card for high-capacity recording. Copy still images from a videocassette to a memory card, and vice versa. Produce effects not possible with just a cassette using one of the three types of Card Mix Effects. Choose one of the sample images provided on the supplied MultiMediaCard such as a picture frame or crashing waves and combine it with the currently recording image.
*An 8MB MultiMediaCard is supplied with the camcorders.

Movie Making Fun Fo

Analog Line-In
For instant editing, simply connect your TV, VCR, or analog camcorder to the ZR50 MC , ZR45 MC or ZR40 and send the analog signal directly to your computer's IEEE1394 terminal*, without recording to tape. If you choose, you may first record the analog signal to DV tape, allowing you to create a high-quality master of your original.
*The Analog-Digital Converter may not function depending on the software used.
Advanced Accessory Shoe (ZR50 MC only)
Simply slide on an accessory, and the shoe transmits power directly from the ZR50 MC. Choose to attach Canons DM-50 Directional Stereo Microphone*, the worlds first stereo shotgun mic with high sensitivity and super-directional pick up. Use when recording or dubbing audio. Or, attach the VL-3 Video Light*, which can either stay on continuously or turn on/off automatically in response to changes in the brightness of the shooting situation.

*Optional

Lithium Ion Power
Lithium ion battery packs can be recharged at any time, so you will always be prepared for peak shooting performance, and never caught without power unexpectedly. Cut down on charging time with the high-capacity BP-522 and BP-535 battery packs* quick charging feature. When charged with the CR-560 charger kit*, the BP-522 and BP-535 give 70 minutes of recording** after only 15 minutes of charging.

* Optional ** Using the viewfinder
Progressive Photo (ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC only)
The ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC employ the Progressive Photo function to record sharp, clear still images, even of moving subjects, onto a memory card. When you take a still image, the camcorder's iris works as a mechanical shutter immediately closing after the picture is taken. Every 1/30 of a second, the camcorder reads two fields of image data simultaneously, resulting in full-frame images virtually free of annoying time-lag blur.
Flexible LCD View Screen and Color Viewfinder
The 2.5 view screen makes it easier to compose sensational shots from any angle. It swivels and flips for maximum handling comfort and flexibility. It also tucks neatly away when bright shooting conditions make the eyecup viewfinder the preferred way to shoot.

Digital Photo Mode

The camcorders function as a digital still camera; theyre like two cameras in one. Just press the photo button to capture more than 700 stunning still pictures on a single videocassette (in SP mode) or combine video and still pictures together with the added benefit of audio. The ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC can also capture approximately 60 fine resolution still pictures onto an 8MB MultiMediaCard.
AV Insert and Audio Dubbing
Use this feature to insert new scenes of video from your VCR or other camcorder onto a tape recorded in the SP mode. Using a recording made in the 12 bit audio mode you can also add stereo sound from another audio source or through the internal microphone or an external microphone.

or Everyone

Night Mode
In situations too dark for conventional recording, the camcorder selects the optimal shutter speed, based on the subject's brightness, allowing improved brightness and color. Now you can capture your baby sleeping without even turning on the light.

PCM Digital Sound

The camcorders offer two digital audio modes to enhance the playback experience. The 16 bit mode produces the higher, CD equivalent, two-channel sound quality while the 12 bit mode records on two of four channels leaving two other channels free to dub extra sound at a later date.

Program Auto Exposure

Ensures great video results even in challenging shooting conditions. Select the program that matches your scene and the camcorder adjusts internal controls for perfect video every time. Choose from Easy Recording, Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Sand & Snow, Low Light and Night.

AE Shift

Gives you control over how dark or light the camcorder sets the auto exposure level.

Portrait Sand & Snow

Manual Controls
In addition to being fully automatic, the camcorders offer manual control over focus, white balance and shutter speed.

Digital Effects

Sports Spotlight Low Light
The camcorders include a selection of digital effects for a more appealing look and greater imaging variety.
Extended Recording Function (ZR50 MC only)
In addition to the SP mode, the ZR50 MC s Extended Recording Function lets you choose from three more recording modes: Long Play (LP), giving 1.5 times the standard recording time; and two more modes giving two and three times SP*. When image data is recorded to a tape in the 2x and 3x SP modes, it is compressed twice as much as in SP and LP modes. In the 3x SP mode, record for up to 4 hours on an 80 minute cassette tape. The ZR45 MC and ZR40 can record in the SP and LP modes.
*When recording in double or triple length recording mode, image quality will not be as high as SP or LP mode.

Faders

Use the various faders to start or end scenes with a fade to or from black. Choose between Fade Trigger, Vertical Wipe, Horizontal Wipe and Mosaic fades*.

*During playback only.

Effects
Give variety to your images during recording by adding Art, Black and White, Sepia or Mosaic* effects.
*During recording to a tape and playback only.
Selectable Color Light-up Buttons (ZR50 MC only)
The clear buttons above the LCD panel light up, adding a touch of fun while also making it possible to play back cassettes when in dark surroundings. Choose the color in which they light up: green, orange, blue, yellow, turquoise or purple. Press one of the buttons and they simultaneously change color. You can also select to turn them off, or set them to power save mode, where they only light up when one of them is pressed.
Multi-image Screen (ZR50 MC and ZR45 MC only)
Divides your display screen into four, nine or sixteen pictures with the Image Capture feature. You can choose the speed at which the images are captured: Manual, Slow, Moderate, or Fast.

Recording from Mini-DV to VHSCanon ZR50MC
To record video from a Mini-DV video tape to a regular VHS tape (so that it can be easily played on a standard VCR), you will need the following items: 1. Canon ZR50MC camera. 2. AV cable (included with camera & made for this camera). 3. Power supply for the camera (included in camera bag). 4. VCR with front inputs, located in the A10 lab. (Any VCR will work, but these instructions are written assuming a lab VCR will be used.) 5. Mini-DV tape you wish to use as a source. 6. Video tape onto which you want to record (destination). To record from a Mini-DV tape, please use the following instructions: 1. Connect the AV cable to the yellow AV port under the plastic door on the side of the camera, just under the hand strap. 2. Connect the other end of the AV cable (which has three plugs-one yellow for video, one red for right audio channel, and one white for left audio channel) to the front of the JVC VCR (These directions assume you will be using the equipment in A10). (The connections are color-coded on the VCR.) 3. Plug the Canon power supply (refer to the diagram in the bag if you dont know what this is) into the side of the camera, under the small plastic door under the hand strap. (Its labeled DC IN 9.5V.) 4. Connect the cord that goes from the power supply (the big plastic chunky part) to the wall to the power supply, and the other end into a wall outlet. 5. Turn on the VCR and camera, and place a tape into each (the camera should be switched to PLAY(VCR)). Also turn on the video monitor, which should display the video as you record it. 6. Make sure the VCR reads F1 on the front of the VCR, indicating that it will pay attention to the connections on the front. (Do this by using the channel up/down buttons on the front of the VCR). 7. Locate the portion of video on the MiniDV tape that youd like to record onto VHS, and stop the tape a few seconds before the beginning of the clip. 8. If theres anything on the VHS tape you need to keep, stop the tape a few seconds AFTER the portion that you want to save. 9. Press the REC and Play buttons on the front of the VCR. 10. Press Play on the camera and the video from the Mini-DV tape should be displayed on the video monitor and the cameras screen. 11. When the video has all been recorded, just press stop on the camera and VCR, turn all devices off, and return all cables and accessories to the camera bag.
