| I expected great things from Canon, but this product sickens me. I am stuck with this 300$ chunk of cheap plastic combined with a few pieces of glass. I bought this camera only a few days before a trip to Seattle. With very limited opportunity to familiarize myself with the product. | |

| Great Consumer Camcorder I have used this camera to record many home movies, along with some student films and shorts. For its price. Overpriced (Not oppinion; fact) According the Canon, the ZR850 suggested retail price is $299. Amazon is currently selling it for almost $800. Compact, Realiable, and Versatile So far so good. I have had this camaera for over a year and have recorded many many hours of video. | |

RESERVING A CAMERA FROM THE DIGITAL AQUARIUM
Camera reservations must be made in advance as there are a limited number of cameras. To make a reservation call the Digital Aquarium at 404-413-4730, or come in person to the Student Center, Room 390 (on the third floor). Reservations can be made as far in advance as the end of the semester. Only currently enrolled students can checkout equipment and make reservations.
Alumni, Staff and Faculty cannot checkout equipment from the Digital Aquarium. Basic equipment does not require any training workshops. However, advanced equipment does require workshops. The student who makes the reservation must pick up the equipment. A valid Panther ID card is required to take workshops and to pickup equipment. The Digital Aquarium checksout equipment on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. For a normal checkout, a student picks up the equipment on a checkout day, and returns it on the following checkout day. Students can use two (2) reservations every four (4) weeks and can use both checkouts at once, for a double-checkout. For example, if the equipment is picked up on Wednesday, it would normally be due back on Friday (by 12pm). Although for a double checkout, equipment picked up on a Wednesday would not be due back until Monday (by 12pm). A double-checkout uses up both of the students reservations for a four week period. However, students can always checkout equipment as a Walk-In on checkout days. Simply come to the Digital Aquarium (SC390) on a checkout day, and if there are unreserved cameras, you can check one out without a reservation. Walkins are unlikely to happen on Fridays, as the Digital Aquarium usually has 100% of its equipment reserved in advance for Fridays. Tip: Make your reservations as far in advance as possible. There is no penalty for cancelling a reservation. Although reservations cancelled with less than 1 day notice will still count towards a students reservation quota. There is no charge for checking out equipment from the Digital Aquarium. The Digital Aquarium is 100% funded by Student Technology Fees. A legally binding contract will be signed when equipment is checkedout. Students who return equipment late will lose their checkout privileges for 4 weeks for every 1 day the equipment is late. After ten days late, the student will no longer be able to checkout equipment from the Digital Aquarium, and their Student Account will be placed on Hold with the Georgia State Registrars Office. Students are responsible for damage to equipment resulting from ignorance, neglect, accident, or theft. If equipment is stolen, they must provide a police report within 48 hours to the Digital Aquarium Coordinator.
SETTING UP THE CANON ZR850 CAMERA CHARGING BATTERIES WITH THE POWER SUPPLY
After picking up the camera Kit, the camera batteries need to be charged, before recording. The Digital Aquarium does not charge batteries in advance. It takes about 2 hours to charge the extended life battery. To charge the battery, connect it to the back of the camera. If there is already a battery on the camera, it can be removed by pressing the Battery Release button, located on the camera below the battery. To connect a battery to the camera, look at the back of the battery. There will be two metal plates. Those metal plates will lineup with the metal pins on the back of the camera. There are also arrows on the battery which indicate which way the battery should be connected to the camera. The battery will slide and click into place. Once secure, it will not come off without pressing the Battery Release button. Once the battery is attached to the camera, it is ready to be charged. Next plug the 2-prong electric power cord into a standard household electric outlet. The other end of the Power Supply has a custom power plug for the Canon ZR850 camera. The Power Supply attaches to the Canon ZR850 via a small outlet located below the camera battery. It is labeled AC. Once properly connected, a RED Light with the initials CHG will start blinking. Once the light stops blinking, and remains steady, the battery is fully charged. While the camera battery is charging, be sure to keep the camera up on a counter or table, away from children, pets, and water. It is not necessary to charge the batteries 100%, in order for them to still work. The Canon ZR850 can run off of the power supply, without a battery. The ZR850 cannot charge a battery while it is On. The camera must be Off in order for the battery to charge. With the camera connected to a charged battery or a power supply, you can insert your MiniDV tape.
MINIDV TAPES
MiniDV cameras have been the most popular type of camera in the world for almost a decade. MiniDV tapes are an international standard, that can be purchased throughout the world. Though there are many brands and many price points. A standard MiniDV tape can be found at any location that stocks blank VHS tapes or blank CDs. SONY brand are the most reliable, though they are also the most expensive. There are two factors that separate the low-cost MiniDV tapes from the professional or Master grade tape stock: reliability and shelf life. More expensive tapes are less likely to jam in a camera or tape deck. Cheap
MiniDV tapes have a shelf life of approximately 25 years. More expensive tapes have a shelf life of approximately 50 years. No tape will last forever. To insert the tape in the Canon ZR850, turn the camera up side down. On the bottom of the camera there will be an Eject Button. Slide this button into the Open position, and open the camera like a clamshell or like a book. The tape will automatically eject itself. Once the camera has been opened, you cannot close it until the camera completes the ejection of the tape. Attempting to close the camera while it is ejecting a tape can break the camera and damage the tape. Insert the tape with the label side facing out, sprocket holes facing toward the inside of the camera. Push the tape holder into the camera. This will start an automated retraction of the tape into the camera. DO NOT press down on the tape mechanism, as this will damage the camera and the tape. Once the tape mechanism stops moving (and making mechanical sounds), it is safe to close the camera back up. Tapes are ejected the same way they are inserted. The camera must be On, and not recording, in order to Eject a tape.
CLEANING THE LENS
You may want to check the lens on the front of the camera, to see if it is clean. If it is dusty, or has finger prints, use a Lens Wipe (provide with all cameras) to clean off the unwanted dirt. Do not use your finger, shirt, tissues, paper towels, or anything other than the Lens Wipes to clean the lenses.
USING THE CANON ZR850 CAMERA
Once the battery is charged and connected to the camera, the MiniDV tape is loaded, and the lens is clean, then you are ready to turn the camera on and begin recording.
POWER SWITCH
The Power Switch in on the side of the camera, near the back. The Power Switch has three (3) settings. OFF is in the middle. PLAY is for watching your footage. CAMERA is for recording. Place the Power Switch into CAMERA position. The ZR850 will turn on. You should see a blue screen on the LCD display, and in the viewfinder. You can ignore any warnings about the Time/Date not being set. (You can set them in the Menu if you wish.) Once powered up, you should see icon on the LCD screen for battery life remaining and tape life remaining. There will also be a counter displayed, showing the amount of time available on the tape. Remove the lens cap. You should now see an image on the camera LCD screen and in the viewfinder. Press the RECORD button on the back of the camera, located near the Power Switch, to start and stop video recording. The Canon ZR850 is an Automatic camera. There are no manual controls for Shutter, Aperture, Gain, Volume, or White Balance. All of these settings are controlled automatically by the camera.
ZOOM, DISPLAY, AND MENU FUNCTIONS
Use the Zoom Slider, located on top of the camera, above the Record Button, to zoom in tight and zoom out wide. There is a zoom meter displayed on the LCD screen to show you the zoom range of the camera. If you want to hide all of the icons on the screen, there is a Display button, located on the LCD side of the camera, that can toggle the visibility of the icons. There is a Menu button, which also functions as a scroll-up, scroll-down to navigate through the Menus. The average Basic Video user will not need to access the Menus. However the Menus can be used to add Digital Effects such as Black & White,
Sepia, Pixelation, and others. The Digital Aquarium recommends that you do not use camera effects, as all of the same effects can be added in the editing phase using computer software that produces much better results.
USING A MIC KIT WITH THE CANON ZR850
The Canon ZR850 has a 1/8 Mic Input. Students can use XLR microphones with the ZR850, using the XLR-1/8 adaptors provided with the Digital Aquarium Mic Kits. The Digital Aquarium checksout Hand Held Mic Kits and Lavalier Mic Kits (aka clip on mics). The adaptor device is called the XLR Pro Pak. The XLR ProPak is an audio adaptor that permits XLR Mics to be plugged into the Canon ZX850s Mic Input. To use the XLR Pro Pak, first attach it to the bottom of the camera by threading the screw on the XLR Pro Pak into the screw hole on the bottom of the camera. The screw threads are standardized for all U.S. cameras. Do not overtighten, as this can result in the cracking of the Canon ZR850s plastic body. Once the XLR Pro Pak is attached to the bottom of the camera, locate the RED Mic Input. It is located on the side of camera, near the front. It is covered by a GREY plastic protective flap. The flap is labeled Mic. The 1/8 Mic Input will be RED. Plus the 1/8 cable on the XLR Pro Pak into the RED Mic Input on the ZR850 camera. Do not plug the XLR Pro Pak into the YELLOW A/V Input. Once the XLR Pro Pak is plugged in to the camera, the ZR850 will automatically switch from the built-in camera mic, to the Mic Input. Now simply plug one end of the XLR cable into your Mic, and the other end into Channel-1 of the XLR Pro Pak. There are a few settings on the XLR Pro Pak. Volume is controlled by the BLACK knobs, numbered 1-10 (10 is the loudest). There are also some switches on the XLR Pro Pak. When using a Microphone with the XLR Pro Pak, the switches should be set to Mic, not Line. Line level inputs are used when the camera is connected to something that is not a Mic, such as a mixer board or a VCR. Up to two Mics can be used with the XLR Pro Pak. Students can choose between Mono and Stereo audio. The switch for G1/G2 is not used.
USING A TRIPOD WITH THE CANON ZR850
Small tripods can be checked out from the Digital Aquarium to be used with the Canon ZR850 Basic Camera Kit. On some of the Small Tripods, there is a removable camera plate that is first attached to the bottom of the camera. Then the camera plate is locked into place on top of the tripod. On other models of the Small Tripod, there is a screw on the top of the tripod that screws into the bottom of the Canon ZR850. When attaching the camera to these types of tripods turn the screw into the camera. Do not twist the camera around, as you may drop it. The Small Tripods are compatible with all U.S. camera models, and can be checked out separately without a camera kit. The Small Tripods cannot be used with the Digital Aquariums Advanced Camera Kits, as they cannot support the weight of the larger cameras.
