Please read these operating instructions carefully and keep them for reference. Canton cannot be held liable for any damage resulting from non-compliance with the following instructions. Choose a level, dry and clean place for your speakers, away from windows with direct sunlight, heat sources, vibrations, high humidity and extreme cold. Never open the housing. Contact your authorized dealer or a qualified repair specialist in the event of problems or defects. To prevent damage, your subwoofer may only be operated with the voltage specified on the nameplate. To avoid the risk of fire and the possibility of an electric shock, the subwoofer may not be exposed to rain or high air humidity (> 80%). The device complies with the valid EMV regulations at an ambient temperature of +10C +40C. Do not use force on the operating elements, connections or cables. Disconnect the mains cable and connection cables to other equipment before shifting to another place. Always pull the plugs and not the cables. Never touch the mains cable with wet hands. To protect the amplifiers of the DM-System from overheating, a minimum space of 5 cm from walls and furniture must be observed when setting up the equipment. Avoid heat accumulation and do not cover your DM-System with curtains, tablecloths etc. To avoid image interference, ensure that there is sufficient space (min. 1 m) between the subwoofer and the TV (tube TVs only). This does not include the DM 90, since it is magnetically shielded like all other components of the DM system (satellites and central speaker) and can be positioned directly next to the TV set without any problems. Do not place your DM-System close to heat sources or open flames (e.g. candles). Please disconnect the DM-System from the mains when not in use for longer periods, during thunder storms or in the event of flooding. Do not place any objects on the DM housing. Oscillations and vibrations can damage them.

Do not insert any objects or body parts into the subwoofer opening DM 1 and DM 2). Live components inside the housing could get touched and damaged. This can lead to short circuiting, electric shocks and fire. Turn down the volume immediately if sound distortions, such as unnatural knocking, beating or high-frequency clicking can be heard. While in playback mode distortions can be heard like e.g. unnatural knocking, pounding or high frequency clicking, the volume level is immediately to be reduced. Do not use any chemical solutions to clean the equipment. Use a clean, dry cloth. If exposed to severe temperature fluctuations, condensation (water drops) can form inside the subwoofer. In this case, wait for at least 2 hours until the moisture has evaporated before putting the equipment into operation. The batteries in the remote control must be disposed of at a waste battery collection point. Batteries should be kept out of the reach of children. Batteries must be inserted correctly, as shown on the polarity label. Only use the battery or rechargeable battery types specified for this system (LR03 AAA 1.5V). The batteries supplied with the system are not rechargeable, so please do not attempt to do so. The mains plug must always be accessible so that it can be removed in an emergency! The correct setup and connection of the subwoofer are the responsibility of the user. Canton will not accept any responsibility for damage or injuries caused by incorrect setup or faulty connection. Warning: Listening to music at high volume levels, in particular for a longer period, can lead to hearing damage.

System Description

The virtual surround systems of the DM-series produce a full-value acoustic field that is only possible otherwise with 5.1 systems. To do so, the individual channels are processed specifically per frequency into a multi-channel recording and mixed into two channels in such a way that a spatial surround impression is given when played back. This means minimum installation expense and effort for a great sound. The systems have an integrated FM tuner and an intelligent remote control which can also be used to control a second listening zone (multi-room). If the remote control provided with this system should not funktion, please refer to the chapter Troubleshooting and Optimization on page 62.

Pack Contents DM 1 and DM 2
The scope of delivery of the DM 1 and DM 2 digital movie systems includes the following components: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) One central surround loudspeaker (DM 1) or two small, variably positionable satellite loudspeakers (DM 2). One subwoofer with integrated audio receiver (including an FM tuner with RDS feature). One cable set for connecting 2 digital and one analog stereo sources. One loudspeaker cable (7.5 m) for connecting the subwoofer with the satellites. One mains cable for the power supply of the subwoofer. One throw-out antenna for FM reception. One coax cord for the connection to the broadband cable. One display-supported and easy to operate universal remote control. Table stand (DM 2). Available as an optional accessory for DM 1. Two wall brackets (DM 2) / one wall bracket (DM 1). Three batteries (LR03 AAA 1,5V) for the remote control. 36

Pack Contents DM 90

The scope of delivery of the DM 90 digital movie system includes the following components: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) One active central surround loudspeaker with integrated audio receiver (including an FM tuner with RDS feature). One cable set for connecting 2 digital and one analog stereo sources. One display-supported and easy to operate universal remote control. One coax cord for the connection to the broadband cable. One mains cable for the power supply of the subwoofer. One throw-out antenna for FM reception. Three batteries (LR03 AAA 1,5V) for the remote control.
The central surround loudspeaker (DM 1 and DM 90) should be placed below or above the TV set. A flat screen tv may be placed directly on the DM 90. The satellites of the DM 2 system, on the other hand, are best positioned to the right and left of the image reproduction unit. The distance between the satellites should be no more than 4m. The subwoofer serves simultaneously as the central control unit of your digital movie system and can be placed wherever you like in the room. The preferred position, however, is one which is close to the TV and signal sources, because this enables you to keep the necessary connection cables short. When using a tube TV set, you should keep a minimum space of one meter between the subwoofer and the TV. The DM 90 has the amplifier build in the active central surround loudspeaker.

Connecting the loudspeakers DM 1/ DM 2
Use the supplied loudspeaker cables to connect the speakers to the screw terminals Front Left and Front Right on the back of the subwoofer (strip approx. 1 cm of the insulation off the cable ends). Please observe the correct polarity, red for plus (+) and black for minus (-). Use the markings on the supplied cable for this purpose. The connection for the center speaker is only active in 5.1 mode, which can be switched on via the service setup (see Page 61). Important: Only connect your active subwoofer to the mains once all connections to the other audio/video components have been made. You can then turn the mains switch to the ON position. Cut the cable to the required lengths (ideally two cables of equal length). Ensure that the stripped cable ends do not have contact with the back of the housing (risk of short-circuiting!)
Connecting the loudspeakers DM 90
Since the DM 90 is internally wired, connecting the speakers is not neccessary.
The video signal connections are made directly between the source devices and the image reproduction unit. The selection of the image source to be reproduced is made directly in the selection menu of the television (3). A digital satellite receiver can be connected with the DM system via an optical or coaxial digital input, as desired. To do so, the desired input on the back of the active subwoofer or the DM 90 must be selected per slide switch (OPT/COAX).

Terminal DM 90

The Canton DM systems offer a variety of connection options for all standard source devices, such as DVD players, video recorders, satellite receivers, multimedia consoles (Playstation, X-Box,.) etc. To do so, the audio connections of your source devices are connected to the corresponding terminals on the back of the subwoofer (1) or the DM 90 (DVD to DVD, video recorder to VCR etc.). Source devices with a digital output for Dolby Digital and DTS Bitstreams should also be connected digitally to the DM system. This guarantees full Dolby Digital and DTS sound quality.
Connecting source devices
Terminal of the DM 1 and DM 2 subwoofers.
To be able to use the integrated FM tuner in the DM system, you must plug the supplied throw-out antenna into the corresponding socket in the subwoofer. The antenna should be stretched open for better reception. We recommend connection to a broadband cable or roof antenna for optimum reception. The 2.1/5.1 MODE output enables the connection of active wireless loudspeakers, for example. Depending on the setting selected in the service setup (Page 61), the front channels are put out in the 2.1 mode and the surround loudspeakers in the 5.1 mode. The LINE OUT/ZONE 2 (DM 1 and DM 2) or ZONE 2/SUB OUT (DM 90) output can provide the output options selectable in the remote controls Parameter Setup menu: - LINE OUT (DM 1 and DM 2), with a fixed volume level to the connection of an analog recording device. - ZONE 2, with a separately adjustable volume to the connection of an active multi-room and/or wireless loudspeaker system. - SUB OUT (DM 90), output for an optional active subwoofer. Note: If you are using an active subwoofer with the DM 90 please set the volume level for the subwoofer in the Speaker Setupto -6dB and increase the level at the subwoofer by 6dB. You will find more information on this on Page 53.

Remote Control

Starting up the remote control
Please insert the supplied batteries into the remote control in compliance with the polarity markings (+/-).

Using the remote control

The supplied remote control has 12 keys which can be used for different functions, depending on the operating mode. The functions of the 4 keys directly below are shown in the lower part of the display.

Once all of the devices have been connected with one another and the mains switch on the subwoofer is switched on, the Canton DM system is in standby mode. The remote control is activated by pressing any key once. If it is not used for longer than 30 seconds, it returns to the standby mode. It is reactivated by pressing any key. The DM system is switched on and/or put into standby mode by pressing the Power key.
If no connection shows up in the display, there is no wireless connection between the remote control and the subwoofer. If this happens, please check that the subwoofer is switched on or plugged in or, if necessary, reduce the distance between the two.
When you switch on, the remote control starts off in the main menu. From there, you can access the Speaker Setup and Parameter Setup via the Menu key. This provides you with more adjustment options. The remote control menus are set up in a loop, which means that you will always arrive back at the starting point by pressing in one direction.
You can switch between the logged on RF devices, such as DM 1 and DM 2, and the memorized remote control codes in the IR mode with < select >. Note: The functions of the < select > keys are only activated when at least one additional device has been logged on and/or programmed by you in addition to the DM system already logged on. You will find more information on this on Page 58.
The volume of the DM system can be regulated in 100 increments from 0.99 via < volume > in the main menu and in the IR mode. If the DM system is in one of the sub-menus, the volume cannot be altered in the DM or IR mode.

Operating the DM System

to start the DM system.

Important

If you want to switch the DM system off, press again to put the DM system into standby mode. Please note that the DM system inputs are switched over with < input > while <select> regulates the devices to be controlled remotely.

Main Menu

You can select the following sources with tv, vcr, aux, tuner, dvd, sat :
Note: To do justice to the various recording philosophies, especially with music recordings, we have implemented two surround modes. Use surround 2 above all when the speech is difficult to understand (e.g. when the voice reproduction seems to be unusually muffled and unintelligible).
Mute switches the sound off and on.
Use to select whether the sound is to be reproduced in the stereo or surround mode. The system sets the corresponding decode mode automatically, depending on the input signal. Stereo or PCM are activated as analog sound in the stereo play mode, Virtual Dolby Digital, Virtual Dolby Pro Logic II or Virtual DTS in the surround 1 und surround 2 / 2.1 mode play mode and Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II or DTS in the surround 5.1 mode play mode.
Setting the DIGITAL MOVIE
Once you have successfully connected your DM system, you should then adapt the individual components to your listening area. If you want to adjust the settings of your DM system, please switch it on and select Speaker Setup or Parameter Setup by pressing the MENU key once or twice respectively. This will not work if the tuner has been selected as the source device.

The loudspeaker to be adjusted is selected with. Begin by measuring the distance between the individual components of the DM system and your preferred listening position (in line with the Distance Setup graphs). Enter these values in the menu at the corresponding speaker (Subwoofer, Front Left, Front Right) under Distance. is used to adjust the volume of the DM components among one another. Note! Set the volume of the system to a moderate value (40-50) in the main menu before activating the test tone. The volume of the selected speaker can be altered separately via the < volume > key. The volume of the satellites and central surround should be the same at the listening position. Please set the subwoofer in accordance with your own personal preferences. Note: In the 2.1 mode the Center, Rear Right and Rear Left channel are virtual speakers. Their Distance setting can not be changed. 50
The following parameters can be selected with

and altered with

You can determine under Output whether the lower pre-amplifier output on the back of the subwoofer is switched as Line Out (fixed volume level for an analog recording device - only DM 1 and DM 2) or as Zone 2 (adjustable volume for an active multi-room system or wireless loudspeaker system, for example). Instead of Line Out appears Subwoofer with the DM 90. This makes the connection of an additional active subwoofer possible. Room Compensation serves as a sound regulator. It is used to adjust the treble and bass tones of the satellites to the listening area. Here are a few tips on this: In severely acoustically dampened rooms turn up the treble In resonant rooms turn down treble In a freestanding position turn up bass When satellites are positioned close to a wall turn down bass Irrespective of all of this: let your own ear decide. 53
The dynamic bass regulator on the subwoofer (bass expand) adjusts the intensity of the bass tones to the physiological properties of human hearing depending on the volume. When playing movies, we recommend the expand normal or expand medium settings. When playing audiophile stereo recordings, we recommend the bypass setting.
The picture can be synchronized with the sound using lip sync in order to coordinate speech with delayed lip movements, for example. An audio signal delay of 0 to 70ms can be selected.
To play 5.1 multi-channel recordings (DolbyDigital or DTS) through ZONE 2/LINE OUT, dynamic must be set at compressed. The full dynamic position is recommended for normal play back. This setting has no effect at the subwoofer output of the DM 90.

The Canton DM systems have an integrated FM tuner with RDS feature which is selected via the input keys in the main menu of the remote control. The menu key is used to change or memorize the radio frequency. This takes you to the Tuner Setup menu, where you can adjust the following settings: The automatic search function is activated by pressing and holding (>1 sec.) the keys (search upwards or downwards). The system stops automatically every time it finds a station with sufficient field strength. The manual search function is activated by briefly pressing the keys. This function is used for the fine tuning of a radio station.
Memorizing a radio station To program a radio station, begin by starting the search. Please wait until the name of the radio station is shown in the upper line of the display and press the OK key to initiate the save process. If the dispaly does not show the radio text after approximately 10 sec. either the signal strength is too weak or the radio station does not have RDS information. In this case you can save the station without the radio text. The two small digits (presets) to the left of the frequency begin to flash for at least 5 seconds. During this time, select the desired preset using the keys. Only when saved appears in the display the radio station has been programmed. If you have stored the radio station inadvertently under a wrong name, wait until the name appears in the second line and than press the OK key.
Reduction of noise and reception interference If the signal of a radio station has noise or interference, please press the num key to switch the tuner to mono operation, thereby reducing the interference. The last selected mode (stereo or mono) is memorized automatically. Note: It is not possible to adjust the volume of the DM system in the tuner sub-menu!
Selecting the station storage space The system has 20 presets which can be selected using the <preset> keys. A radio station must be selected before the station memory function can be used. To exit the tuner setup menu, press the Menu key again. You cannot access Speaker or Parameter setup from the Tuner Setup menu.

The DM remote control can learn the functions of other infrared remote controls, thus assuming control over the source devices. Depending on the configuration, you can choose between the following menu items: Main menu, DM, DVD, Sat, TV, CD, iPod Dock, Receiver. You will find information on programming on Page 58. Note: The function of the < select > keys is only enabled once at least one of these source devices has been programmed. You will find more information on this on Pages 58.

The previous menu then appears and you can either repeat the programming or cancel the process.
For the registration of the remote control to the DM system you first need to follow the steps on page 58 (Programming the remote control) The DM system parameters set at the factory cannot be deleted, but they can be overwritten (reprogrammed) if necessary. To do so, press after selecting the system. You will then be informed that this device already exists and will be overwritten if you continue (Device already exists Overwrite?). Press start to confirm or to cancel. Once you have confirmed, you will be asked to connect the DM system to be memorized to the mains power supply and switch on the power switch. Please ensure that the DM system was switched off for at least 20 sec. prior to this. Press start 5 - 10 sec. after switching on to initiate the connection process or to cancel the process. The remote control will now attempt to connect itself to the subwoofer that has just been activated, installation successful appears in the display if the connection was successful, and installation failed if it was not. Rectify the cause of the fault (device not switched on, distance too great etc) and start the process again. After a successful installation, use to choose between a DM 1 and a DM 2 system. Confirm your choice with. If you own a second DM system, you can program it to this remote control too via the new device field. Once this field has been selected and confirmed with , the process is identical to the one described above.

Use the clear key to delete functions which have already been programmed. Once you have pressed the key, you will be asked whether you really do want to delete the functions for this device. Confirm by pressing ente or press esc to cancel. The remote control then returns to the device selection menu. Exit the programming mode by pressing esc. 59
If the programming was successful, you will receive the message programming successful.
Register the Remote Control
Operating without a remote control
The basic functions of the DM 1 and DM 2 can also be controlled using the keys on the back of the subwoofer. These include regulation of the volume, selection of the play mode and the source device. In addition to this, the device can be switched on or into the standby mode. An LED (operation) shows the status of the DM system: red = standby, green = on. Note: The DM 90 can only be used with the remote control. An operation directly on the unit is not possible.
Raise volume Lower volume Play mode (stereo/surround) Source selection (DVD, Sat, TV, VCR, AUX, Tuner) On/Standby Operation display (red - standby, green - on)
The Service Setup mode of the DM remote control is accessed by pressing and holding the MENU key, simultaneously pressing the Power key and releasing them both at the same. The following functions can be set here: i2C, Start-up Volume, Volume Limiter and Preset.
The maximum settable and achievable volume is set here in order to prevent an unintentionally high level.
Preset determines the mode in which your DM system is operated. The display differentiates between function-specific and productspecific properties. 2.1 (delivery status) or 5.1 mode can appear as functions. The option exists in 5.1 mode of operating an active or wireless loudspeaker system via the 2.1 MODE/5.1 MODE pre-amplifier output. If 5.1 Mode DM 2 is selected, an additional passive center speaker is required which should be connected at the Center output. This is not necessary in 5.1 Mode DM 1, because the signals are reproduced by the two front speakers. The product-specific properties relate to the DIGITAL MOVIE system you have purchased. Select the menu items here that match up with your system.
This is used to switch off the internal control of the Canton system for servicing. After automatic shut-down of the remote control, reactivation is only possible by disconnecting the sub from the mains for 10 seconds. For this reason, please ensure that the setting is always in the on position.

Start-up Volume

This value determines the maximum volume when the DM system is switched on. If the device is switched off at a lower volume, this level is maintained.

General Care Notes To enjoy your Canton loudspeakers for as long as possible, please observe the following: do not expose loudspeaker housings to direct sunlight. Avoid extreme temperature differences and protect your speakers against moisture. Do not clean the housing surfaces with polish that contains alcohol or scouring agents. Use a non-fluffing cloth if possible.
Play-In Phase To develop its maximum performance, a loudspeaker requires a running-in period of approx. 15-20 operating hours. During this period, the properties of all mechanical components change until they achieve the values determined during the development of the speaker, i.e. the chassis suspension becomes more flexible, which has a positive influence on sound reproduction.

Canton-speakers in a surround setup It is possible in principle to use any Canton-speaker in a surround system. All Canton products have been trimmed accurately for neutral sound reproduction, so that balanced tone performance is obtained with any combination. Even if they are products from different speaker-families. Four speakers are distinguished according to their respective functions in a surround system (Fig. 3) Center-speaker: It must be placed in the immediate vicinity of the television picture (above or below it). For a 6.1 speaker setup place a second center-speaker between the rear surround-speakers (Fig. 4). All Canton center-speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent disturbance of the television picture. Main-speakers: Place the main-speakers to the left and the right of the picture (television set), at least 60 cm distance from the screen edges. Active subwoofer: It reproduces the extreme low frequency signals required by the special effects found in movie soundtracks. The active subwoofer can be located almost anywhere in the room, however the best position is in front of the listener. Surround-speakers: In most cases the surround-speakers should be located to the left and right beside or behind the listener, slightly higher than the seat position. For further information please consult the operating instructions manual of your A/V amplifier (surround amplifier, receiver).
