Karchner Deliver

The rapid growth and development of the food distribution market nationwide is reflected in the recent expansion and success of Karchner Refrigeration Service Inc. and its customers in Pennsylvania. A Carrier Transicold dealership for over 20 years in the Drums/Wilkes-Barre, Pa., area, Karchner recently opened a branch in Harrisburg, Pa., to better meet the sales and service needs of some of the biggest and most established food distributors in the state and the Northeast. The Karchner team and its clients agree its a win-win-win situation because they all follow the same philosophy of success with their respective customers: quality product backed by outstanding service. We made this dealership successful by listening to customers needs and then by earning their trust, said Principal and Owner Harold Karchner. Karchner described the dealerships winning formula in three basic steps. First, we meet and agree on expectations with the end user and the trailer manufacturers representative, he said. Second, we follow up with Carrier and the trailer engineering team to ensure that exacting specifications are met before delivery to the customer. Third, the relationship continues and blossoms with personal and persistent attention to service after the sale.
including providing recommendations regarding refrigeration equipment and needs, responding to questions, handling future upgrades of equipment and suggesting the best way to do things. We look at Carrier as a partner. GroceryWorks.com required a unit configuration to accommodate the way they load and unload, said Scott Pallotta, North America truck product manager for Carrier. Our standard configuration of the Integra unit would not fit their application, so we modified the evaporator and condenser configurations to fit the space allotted. To ensure we optimized the unit for GroceryWorks.coms operation, we tested an entire truck in one of our temperature-controlled cells in our Athens, Ga., facility. In making the design changes we had to make sure that the units were as service-friendly as they were initially intended to be, and that we werent adding in special parts that were unique to this unit.We wanted the unit to fit the customers application. In January 2000 GroceryWorks.com decided to refrigerate its delivery fleet exclusively with Carrier Integra units. The Integra unit fits our need to maintain product integrity, Gans said.It fits well on our truck body and enables us to ensure cold-chain protection so we dont have to use a self-contained unit. GroceryWorks.com currently has 180 Integra units in service. Those units are currently serving three of the hottest city climates in the country year-round: Dallas, Ft.Worth and Houston,Texas. We use the Integra 30S to keep box temperatures consistently at 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the most demanding ambient temperatures, so we can ensure the highest fresh product quality for our customers, Gans said.We are doing everything in our power to get groceries to the customer in better condition than they can get by transporting their own groceries home from the store. As the consumer base of GroceryWorks.com grows, Carrier is committed to its innovative business, delivering a healthy measure of quality, freshness and convenience to every home along each route.

Total Carrier Fleet for 2000 and Beyond
Feesers Inc. celebrates a century in food distribution with Carrier units on all of its more than 100 trucks and trailers. Bob Hunter, planning engineer for Feesers fleet operations, said he started working with Harold Karchner and Carrier products nearly two decades ago in Harrisburg. Theyve treated us very well over the years, with excellent products and services, Hunter said. Feesers order of Carrier Transicold Genesis units this year is the latest chapter in a successful relationship with the Karchner dealership. The Genesis units expand the capabilities of Feesers fleet, which also includes
ers Expanded Sales, Service to Food Distributors
which is shifting from straight trucks to predominantly trailers. The Carrier systems on trailers up to 53 feet feature one remote evaporator and a moveable bulkhead, creating two compartments for hauling frozen foods in one and fresh and dry-prepared products in the other. Carrier and Karchner also supply Ettline with R70 Genesis units for its owned and leased local delivery trucks. Carrier Transicolds Stealth low-noise option provides additional benefits to the distributor. It permits us to operate quietly around hospitals, schools and residential areas where our institutional, supermarket, deli and food court customers are located, Hess explained.
What the Dealership Hears
When Karchner Refrigeration opened its second branch in Harrisburg to better serve customers in Central Pennsylvania, Sales Manager Jim OBrien noted, We simply applied Harold Karchners philosophy of listening to customers and earning their trust to a much larger food distribution market.
Bob Hunter, planning engineer for Feesers Inc. fleet operations, said the grocery distributor recently added Genesis multi-temperature systems to its allCarrier Transicold fleet to better manage mixed loads.

Extras for All Seasons

Both Ettline and wholesaler Four Seasons Produce cite Karchners and Carriers value-added services, including driver and mechanic training programs, and MOBILECARE and next-day parts services as key reasons to choose Carrier.
Four Seasons Produce Vehicle Maintenance Manager John Wensel (left), shown inspecting a Carrier Extra unit, said his company switched to Carrier and Karchner to ensure quality and reliability.
Carrier Ultima and Optima trailer units, and Supra 722 truck units. The Genesis multi-temperature system consists of a host refrigeration system and an individually controlled remote evaporator. The system provides the highest multi-temp capacity and airflow available, and ensures fast pulldown and temperature recovery. Feesers trailers have a center divide creating two compartments, one for frozen products and the other for perishables, with the Genesis system ensuring optimal conditions for both sides of the trailer. The sleek design of the SlimLine remote evaporators enables them to be placed anywhere, even above rear roll-up doors. Overall, the Genesis units give Feesers flexibility, reliability, efficiency and economy, Hunter said. They provide maximum output and protection in our multi-temperature trailers.

Karchner Refrigeration Sales Manager Jim OBrien (center) reviews operation of a Carrier Transicold reefer system with Ettline Foods drivers to ensure the grocery distributor keeps its products cold even on the hottest days.
Genesis of Growth, Versatility
Ettline Foods Corporation in York is another distributor in its second century of operation. Carriers Genesis units are the newest components in Karchners contribution to the recent fast-paced growth and continuing evolution of Ettline, founded in 1889. Ettline Logistics Manager Jonathan Hess said the Genesis system and Karchner enhance the versatility of our fleet,
Weve recently switched to Carrier and Karchner to ensure the quality and reliability of the 40 to 60 trips our fleet makes to customers each day throughout central Pennsylvania, said John Wensel, Four Seasons vehicle maintenance manager. The produce distributor, with 550 employees based in Denver, Pa., operates from New England to the Carolinas. The Karchner dealership helps orient Four Seasons drivers to the use of Carriers Extra reefer systems and Stealth noisereduction packages. Im sending our entire crew of six mechanics to Carrier School for maintenance training, Wensel said. Were also impressed by Karchners responsiveness, attention to detail and frequent check-ups to ensure that parts delivery and other services meet or exceed our expectations.
We pay a lot of attention to what our customers say, to build on strengths and meet challenges. We especially hear a lot about our MOBILECARE service, which includes three vans based in each of our two locations. Food distributors tell us we cant be beat for the sheer number of technicians we have available on the road and on their lots for warranty and emergency services. Exceptional services coupled with quality products make all the difference, according to OBrien. Many food distribution managers have concluded theyve experienced less maintenance and better product reliability through our Carrier-dealer partnership, resulting in lower operating costs for our customers and theirs, he said. OBrien also pointed out that Carrier products offer several important features and benefits for the food industry, including precise temperature control and high cooling and heating capacity. The Genesis line, for example, gives our customers a comfort level and assures them of food product protection, he explained. By offering the highest cooling and heating capacity in the industry, Genesis provides faster temperature recovery from the many stops and door openings a driver must make per day. Finally, OBrien likes to tell the story of what one vice president of operations for a large regional food distributor told him: Carrier and Karchner stand completely behind their products and services. They work out solutions for all types of situations, and they help keep us and our customers cool, even on the hottest days.

MHC Carrier Takes To The Skies
A scissor-lift truck raises the box to the height required to load 747 planes at airports in New York City and Miami. The box is now equipped with a Genesis R70 unit to maintain the quality of cold meals served on airplanes.
The Genesis R70 dual-discharge evaporator is mounted inside the box. The slim design allows for more complete loading, while the dual-discharge feature compensates for cool air leakage from the two roll-up doors.
arrier dealer MHC Carrier-Kansas City is on the cutting edge of a growing trend: helping airlines address the demand for serving more refrigerated food in flight. The Kansas City, Mo., dealership has devised a way to install a Carrier Genesis R70 unit and a dual-discharge evaporator on a scissor-lift truck to maintain the quality and safety of chilled airline fare. While Carrier offers high-quality reliable products, it was the professionalism, problem-solving skills and attention to customer service that convinced this customer to use Carrier for this project, according to Al Guinn, general manager of MHC Carrier. Before the customer signed on, we went out and talked with him and advised him on how to do this project cost-efficiently, Guinn said. It started out as putting a straight truck unit on top and ducting the cold air in. Then we began working with a design and engineering group from Carrier, and in the end we gave the potential client sound technical advice. The competition just gave him a quote. The technicians at MHC Carrier listened to what the client wanted: better airflow in the boxes and a more streamlined unit. Thats why they chose the Genesis R70, which offers the highest capacity and airflow available boasting 11,600 Btuh of host cooling capacity at zero degrees Fahrenheit, faster temperature recovery, precise setpoint control and even temperature distribution. One of the problems with cooling the customers existing boxes is that the boxes have two roll-up doors, said Steve Mayhew, branch manager of MHC Carrier. You lose twice as much cold air with the box leakage and multiple door openings; thats why we proposed the dual-discharge evaporator. The exceptional capacity and airflow of Genesis helped solve the problem. There are several different businesses using this type of truck, Guinn said. The catch is that theyre typically not refrigerated. But to stay competitive, our customer needs to be able to haul cold items using its existing fleet. Carrier earned the business by demonstrating not only its refrigeration knowledge but also its adaptability and creative problem-solving. With an increasing number of passengers enjoying chilled food, MHC Carrier has positioned itself to help airline food service companies meet the growing demand.

Car rier Technicians Bring Ser vice to the Customer
To save customers time and money, Carrier Transicolds dealers continue to invest in MOBILECARE service. This shop on wheels program allows skilled technicians to conduct maintenance and repairs at customers transportation and maintenance facilities, pickup locations, delivery sites or storage sites, whichever is most convenient for the customer. This service really provides the customers convenience by serving them faster, said Joe Hock, national service manager. That allows the customers to reduce their downtime and increase productivity because they have more equipment available to do the jobs. Another benefit of the service is that it eliminates drayage expense. You dont have the CDL driver waiting around, said Hock. So you avoid having to pay the drivers salary and benefits for the time hes waiting, as well as paying for the repairs and the time they take. This is a huge benefit, and increases savings to customers, as many of the dealers who provide MOBILECARE have found out.

Rapid Response Advantage

One example of a growing MOBILECARE service is Carrier Transicold South, based in Atlanta. The dealership has nine service trucks on the road every day one in Knoxville, two in Savannah and six in Atlanta. Nine technicians are dedicated to the MOBILECARE units; two are master technicians. The biggest thing is being able to go to the customers yard, said Hugh Giles, vice president and general manager of Carrier Transicold South. The customer sees the mobile service technician one to two times a week, and weve designed our shop and support services so the technicians can spend more time interfacing with the customer. For example, technicians or customers can phone in parts orders to the shop, so the supplies each technician needs are waiting in his assigned bin. That way the technician can quickly get whats needed for a job and get right back on the road and service the customer.
Carrier Transicold Souths well-equipped mobile service fleet and skilled technicians are able to respond to problems in 20 to 30 minutes, which reduces downtime and increases productivity for the customer.
Casey said. Additional savings come to the customer because the technician usually looks at more than one piece of equipment, further reducing lost driver time, fuel and wear and tear on vehicles. One of the ways Caseys dealership has ensured that fleets receiving MOBILECARE service are at peak performance capacities is by responding to the individual needs of the customer. We mold the service to the customers schedule so we can get at the whole fleet, Casey said. We have nine MOBILECARE trucks that can service current truck/trailer diesel products. MOBILECARE is not available for variable speed units. Each truck carries different inventory according to fleet demographics and the markets they cover. MOBILECARE is such a large percentage of the dealerships business that after completing factory and in-house training, the technician is awarded his own fully equipped mobile service vehicle. He is assigned to a service territory and maintenance accounts, and is available for emergency service calls or to work in-shop. Each technician also has a two-way radio and cell phone. Communication with the technicians is critical for peak efficiency, Casey said. All service and maintenance calls are handled through a central dispatch system at the companys headquarters. This gives us more efficient use of all the technicians time, he added. Because of our emphasis on the MOBILECARE program, customers get some of the best technicians through this service, Casey said.

Mobile Service for All Jobs
Multimarine Services of Baltimore has built its reputation on providing mobile service. Its fleet of more than 48 mobile trucks services all Carrier truck/trailer units, commercial and residential air conditioning systems, marine vessels at the Chesapeake Basin piers, various transit and school bus fleets, and several container lines. More than a dozen technicians are assigned to the MOBILECARE units. Those technicians spend the majority of their day on the roads. We can travel up to 100 miles to service a particular customers needs, said Joseph Smith, vice president. Our technicians spend at least 75 percent of their time on the road servicing customers. Two additional areas that Carrier MOBILECARE service supports are rail and intermodal applications. Railcars cant come to a dealership, Hock said. Therefore, we dispatch service technicians to the customers rail location and service the unit there. With intermodal/rail markets growing, Carrier will continue to expand its mobile services to meet customers needs in these areas. MOBILECARE on-site service support for transport refrigeration equipment is part of Carrier Transicolds complete family of RoadCare customer support programs. By addressing truck/trailer, rail and intermodal applications, Carriers goal is to leave no stone unturned when it comes to customer service. MOBILECARE simplifies maintenance and repair work and reduces downtime, allowing MOBILECARE customers to concentrate on their services and their customers. By bringing the service directly to customers, Carrier dealers save them valuable time and money, giving them a competitive edge.
Carrier Transicold South Service Manager Gary Bishop (right) goes through a parts checklist with Technician Marc Wilbur prior to leaving on his mobile service route. The MOBILECARE shops on wheels allow technicians to service refrigeration units wherever it is most convenient for customers, saving them time and money.
The ability to go to the customers yard has doubled the dealerships monthly service business since 1998, an indication of MOBILECAREs value to customers. The key is that we get to customers weve never been able to before, because we offer something our competition doesnt, Giles said. Customers have told us that our competitor would take more than two hours to get there. Were there in 20 to 30 minutes because we have so many service units. And we expect to add up to three more mobile service trucks by 2001.

Customized Service Schedules
Carrier Transicold of Southern New England (CTSNE) saves customers time and money by servicing them at preferred locations. The tremendous growth of the company is a direct result of our MOBILECARE service, said Joe Casey, president of CTSNE. Companies today cannot find enough CDL drivers to deliver their products. The last thing a company wants is for a driver to be using valuable drive time to bring a unit in for repairs or service. Our road-call labor rate is higher than shop rate, but when you consider the drivers time, fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle, it is actually less costly,
Multimarine Services Inc. has 48 mobile trucks that service a wide range of Carrier products in and around the Baltimore/capital district. More than a dozen technicians spend at least 75 percent of their time on the road servicing truck and trailer customers.
Four PC Cards Meet All Fleet Needs

provide peace of mind

Downloading, configuring and programming microprocessors for an entire fleet is as simple and easy as using a bank ATM card, with Carrier Transicolds DataShare PC cards. Carrier revolutionized the transport refrigeration market when it offered the industrys first PCMCIA card, designed to work with Carriers Advance microprocessor controller. Now four types of PC cards are available to meet the needs of every fleet.

Cards Replace Computers

With Carriers exclusive DataShare PC card, technicians no longer have to connect a computer to the micro to make changes. Instead, only one computer is needed to place the appropriate commands or software onto a PC card, and one PC card can be used to change any number of micros in a fleet. The time, effort and inconvenience of connecting a PC to the micro are eliminated, replaced by a tool that can be carried in a shirt pocket. Some DataShare PC Cards can be purchased from Carrier ready to insert into the micro. Others can be used for downloading information still others are easily reconfigured or programmed using a computer and running Carriers DataManager and Service Tool Windows-based program. This innovative informationmanagement software allows data to be extracted from the card for convenient and customized viewing. The data can be printed in reports or saved to other files, and the card can be erased for reuse. Once the PC Card is ready, its inserted into the micro, and the Advance systems easy-to-understand MessageCenter uses plain-language phrases instead of codes to confirm exactly whats happening.

DataShare Program Card

The DataShare program card simplifies upgrading micro software tremendously, Fragnito said. Theres no longer a need to replace chips inside the micro. The Advance operational software can be downloaded from the Internet, e-mailed or sent on floppy disks. Carrier Transicolds Service Tool PC software program allows the customer to copy the operational software file to the DataShare program card. The customer can then insert the card into the micros PCMCIA card slot to upgrade the software. The Advance micro immediately recognizes the program card and prompts the customer to initiate the software upgrade. The process is quick, simple and convenient, Fragnito said. The cards can be reused by writing new software files to them as upgrade versions of Advance micro software are released.

Pocket-Sized, Superior Power
The DataShare card, which is only slightly larger than a credit card, enables technicians to download the entire DataLink memory in less than a minute. It also performs quick and easy microprocessor and DataLink configuration, and software upgrades. Heres how the four types of PC cards download, configuration, program and option work.
DataShare Configuration Card
The DataShare configuration card helps customers by allowing them to upload new function and configuration settings to their Advance micros without a PC or numerous keystrokes. The Carrier Transicold Service Tool PC software assists the customer in selecting micro settings and then copies them to the DataShare configuration card in the office. Customers can then go out and upgrade the settings on their fleets by simply inserting the card into the PCMCIA card slot and pressing a single key, Fragnito said.

DataShare Download Card

When a DataShare download card is inserted into the PCMCIA slot, the Advance micro automatically recognizes the download card and immediately transfers a copy of the entire 512K data-recorder memory to the card. During the download, the MessageCenter notifies the customer that the transfer is taking place, and then instructs the customer to remove the card once the operation is complete, said Mark Fragnito, electronics product manager. The entire process takes only about 30 seconds, a fraction of the time required by a PC. Download cards can hold data from several units simultaneously.

DataShare Option Card

The DataShare option card allows customers to activate Advance and refrigeration system options in seconds by simply inserting the card into the PCMCIA slot and removing it when directed by the MessageCenter. A single card can be programmed to activate options on multiple units, Fragnito explained, and its delivered to the customer pre-programmed for the number of options purchased. These four DataShare cards supply Advance microprocessor users with a pocketful of substantial computer power.
Satellite T racking Keeps MARTRAC in Control of Road, Rail Units
MARTRAC, a division of United Parcel Services Logistics Group, is at the cutting edge of transport refrigeration technology. The company is using a satellite-based system, integrated through Carriers Advance microprocessor controller, to track the whereabouts of and control the conditions inside refrigerated trailers and railcars. The system can shut down, restart and change settings on the refrigeration units while theyre on the roads or on the rails. The customer benefits because MARTRAC can ensure consistent environments inside the traveling boxes. If the truck or rail car is traveling through Texas and its 100 degrees there and then 60 degrees in Chicago, we can adjust the trailer compartments temperature to make up for the ambient heat loss, said Linus Schlumpberger of MARTRAC. A small adjustment like that can extend the shelf life of products for the customer. Combining remote monitoring with Carriers latest micro technology has enabled MARTRAC to significantly lower claims, according to Schlumpberger. Plus, the system ensures that more products reach their final destinations in peak condition. The sophistication of the Advance system also helps technicians better recognize when to do maintenance, he said. We are integrating a total maintenance package through the microprocessor.

Carrier Takes the Wedding Cake
Brian and Patricia Hills wedding day included something never before seen at a reception: a grooms cake in the shape of a Carrier Ultra unit. Carrier Transicold and my dealership are very important to me, and the cake represents the pride I take in my work, said Brian, director of operations for Carrier Transicold South in Atlanta. Carrier plays a major role in my life. Now thats company spirit!
arrier Transicold expresses its sincere condolences to the family and associates of one of Carriers greatest dealers: John H. Jack Kilkenny, who died July 11 after a year-long battle with stomach cancer. Jack was president and CEO of Utility Trailer Sales of Boise Inc. in Boise, Idaho. We at Carrier Transicold are deeply saddened by the loss of Jack, said Travis Smith, manager of dealer development. He was a hard worker who built his business from a fiveperson operation to nearly 100 employees in the 27 years he ran the company. He will truly be missed. Jack was born April 29, 1934, in Salt Lake City and lost his father a year later. He believed that being raised without a father forced him to compete and survive at an early age, which, in turn, helped him in business. This philosophy was demonstrated in 1973 when he started his Utility Trailer dealership. As a result of his hard work he was awarded a dealership by Carrier Transicold. Jacks dealership and Carrier developed a partnership that helped build Carriers reputation in the Boise area. Jack loved his job. He was able to dominate the market for several years with a variety of Carrier Transicold products. In 1985 he was awarded Carrier Transicolds highest honor, National Dealer of the Year. According to his co-workers, Jack was very proud of that accomplishment. He had received the national runner-up award for Dealer of the Year for several years and worked especially hard to finally achieve the ultimate dealer recognition. That philosophy of excellence and hard work was evident in the way Jack conducted his business and his life. Jack was a very interesting person to work for and to work with, said Tom Whitaker, the dealerships controller and partner. He genuinely loved his work and mastered the art of the sale. We often referred to him as the First String, as he could rescue a sale when all hope was lost. Those who knew Jack well knew he could be demanding at times, so things got done. Those same people also knew that he was goodnatured and loved to tease. Whitaker added, I was fortunate enough to work with Jack to see many of the compassionate things he did for others. On the surface one might think that he was a tough businessman. On the inside, he was a man who cared for the little guy and was willing to share his wealth with others.

Carrier Event Raises Over $13,000 for Driver Training
hese bikers were rebels with a cause. Carrier Transicold raised over $13,000 to support the Professional Truck Drivers Institute (PTDI), through its second annual Riders for Drivers Motorcycle Rally, held July 9-11. Forty-seven Carrier Transicold customers, dealers and employees met in Coquitlam, British Columbia, and began the scenic journey to Banff, Alberta, site of the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) Refrigerated Division annual meeting and recognition banquet for ride participants. To participate in the ride, bikers pledged donations to PTDI, which Carrier matched, resulting in a check for $13,800 being presented to TCA Chairman Bob Hansen. Rider participation and pledges more than doubled last years total. The TCA manages PTDI, which advocates standardized, entry-level truck driver training. With driver recruitment and retention a major challenge to fleets, Carrier Transicold saw an opportunity to combine support for a meaningful cause with a hobby shared by several Carrier customers and dealers, according to Travis Smith, Carrier Transicolds manager of dealer development and the Riders for Drivers organizer. We started this in 1999 because many of our customers and their spouses are avid motorcyclists, and no one in the transportation industry was doing this type of event, Smith said. Linking this effort to a cause was important to us, and the severity of the driver shortage made the association with PTDI a natural fit. The enthusiasm and results have greatly exceeded our expectations. Outfitted in official Carrier Transicold Riders for Drivers motorcycle gear, the riders enjoyed majestic views of mountains and lakes along the three-day, 800-mile trek from Coquitlam to Banff.
