BOS Approved Scientific 1/97 CalculatorsSchool Certificate Reference Tests and Higher School Certificate Examinations 1997 The scientific calculators listed on page 3 are the only models approved for use in the School Certificate Reference Tests and Higher School Certificate Examinations in 1997. Schools may apply to have other calculators added to this list provided that requests for approval are received by 2 May 1997. Requests received after this date will not be considered for the current year. Any request must be accompanied by: the manufacturers specifications or a copy of the same; or a clear photocopy of the keyboard of the calculator, showing the brand and model number. The list of approved calculators, including any calculators added to the list, is available at the Boards Internet address (http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au). A final list will be published in the Presiding Officers Handbook, issued to Presiding Officers at the School Certificate Reference Tests and HSC Examinations. Features of approved calculators The Board will only approve calculators that meet the following criteria. In addition to the features of a basic (four operation) calculator, a scientific calculator may include some or all of the following: fraction keys (for fraction arithmetic) percentage key (%) square root key () key memory access keys an EXP key and a sign change (+/) key square (x2) and square root () keys logarithm and exponential keys (base 10 and base e) a power key (ax, xy or similar) trigonometrical function keys with an INVERSE key for the inverse functions (ie sin, cos, tan, INV) a capacity to work in both degree and radian mode reciprocal key (1/x) permutation or combination key (nPr, nCr) cube or cube root keys parentheses keys, etc statistical operations such as mean and standard deviation metric or currency conversion.
Features that are not permitted Calculators with the following features will NOT be approved: programmable (any calculator that can have a sequence of operations stored and then executed automatically is considered programmable and hence NOT allowed); capable of storing alphanumeric data input by a user (this does not exclude calculators with memories that are used to store intermediate numerical results obtained during calculations and required later); capable of storing, manipulating or graphing functions entered in symbolic form (this includes calculators with a graphic-display capacity); capable of performing hard-wired numerical routines for operations such as differentiation, definite integration and the solution of equations; capable of performing hard-wired symbolic manipulations such as addition of algebraic expressions, binomial expansion, symbolic differentiation. General requirements All calculators must meet the following criteria: battery or solar powered hand-held silent (except in approved cases for blind candidates). Calculators that allow modules to be plugged in are permitted only if they meet all the above requirements and all plug-in modules are removed. These requirements also apply to any ruler, pen, watch or other item with a built-in calculator function. Effective: Contact no: Immediately (02) 9927 8233

Distinction Courses University Recognition

BOS 5/97

The universities in NSW and the ACT have agreed to recognise study in the Distinction Courses, but the precise arrangements vary from university to university and from course to course. Some universities offer advanced programs and other special schemes for gifted and talented students, and results obtained in Distinction Courses may be used in considering admission to these programs. The universities have also considered recognition of good results in Distinction Courses through advanced standing and credit transfer. Credit means that students receive credit towards their degree for previous studies and thereby shorten their degree program. Credit may be for specific units in the program, or allow a general exemption from, say, one first-year subject. Advanced standing does not grant credit or reduce the requirements for the degree, but may enable students to use their previous studies to gain access to advanced level units. The universities will consider either advanced standing or credit on an individual basis. The nature and extent of this recognition is likely to depend also on performance in other HSC subjects and on the degree program to which entry is sought. The universities have provided more specific statements on the type of recognition to be granted. The dates in column 1 after the name of the university represent the last updating of the information by the university. (See the following pages.) The following statements apply to students enrolling in university courses in 1997 and provide a general guide to students contemplating university study in subsequent years. Variations may occur as the 1997 provisions come under review. Students taking Distinction Courses, or intending to do so, are encouraged to make contact directly with the universities on the matter of recognition. General inquiries about Distinction Courses can be directed to the Board of Studies. Contact no: Trevor Harrison (02) 9927 8106

UNIVERSITY 1. Charles Sturt University 4.12.96 AUTHORITY Academic Senate
RECOGNITION Charles Sturt University accepts each of the three Distinction Courses in Philosophy, Comparative Literature and Cosmology, as equal to two sessions-long first-year equivalent subjects for the purposes of granting credit. Consideration of credit for these subjects in relation to specific courses to be determined on a case-by-case basis within the faculties concerned. Students who meet all the normal entry requirements of the University for admission and who have successfully completed 2 Unit Physics (or the equivalent in 3 Unit or 4 Unit Science), 3 Unit Mathematics (or higher) and the Distinction Course in Cosmology to be given exemption for Physics 1 (6 credit points). Students who meet all the normal entry requirements of the University for admission and who have successfully completed either Comparative Literature or Philosophy as Distinction Courses be given exemption for 6 credit points of electives. As a general rule, credit transfer for Distinction Courses should be considered on a course-bycourse basis. Students will be considered eligible for credit towards their degrees at UNE on the basis of Distinction Courses passed while enrolled for the New South Wales Higher School Certificate. The University of Western Sydney accepts each of the three Distinction Courses in Philosophy, Comparative Literature and Cosmology, as equivalent to semester-long first-year equivalent subjects for the purposes of granting credit. Consideration of credit for these subjects in relation to specific courses to be determined on a case-by-case basis within the faculties concerned. The School of Philosophy will grant direct entry to upper level (advanced) subjects in Philosophy for students who have completed the Philosophy Distinction Course. Entry to upper level (advanced) subjects in the school on the basis of the Cosmology or Philosophy Distinction Course. UNIVERSITY 6. University of Sydney 4.10.95 AUTHORITY Academic Board
RECOGNITION The University will consider incoming students with Distinction Course results obtained at the previous years HSC on an individual basis for advanced standing in a relevant course or for entry to an advanced program within a degree. The progress of such students is monitored by departments and faculties concerned and the results used in an annual review of this arrangement. In this way students of Comparative Literature may gain entry to second-year units in English, students of Cosmology may gain entry to the second-year unit in Astronomy, and students of Philosophy may gain entry to second-year units in Philosophy. These arrangements are kept under review in the light of experience with the program. Students will be considered eligible to apply for advanced standing towards their degrees at Southern Cross University on the basis of Distinction Courses passed while enrolled for the New South Wales Higher School Certificate. Comparative Literature Two units of level-one English (20 credit points). Philosophy One level-one Philosophy unit (10 credit points). Similar credit awarded as above as elective units. Each application to be assessed individually to determine what credit may be given. Students who have successfully completed the Philosophy Distinction Course will be considered for advanced standing. The prerequisite of Physics A05/06 will be waived for students who have successfully completed the Cosmology Distinction Course and wish to undertake Mathematics B67 (Basic Astronomy and Astrophysics). Students who have performed at a satisfactory level in the Cosmology or Philosophy Distinction Courses will be granted 6 unspecified credit points at 100 (first year) level towards either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.
