CLUSTER GROUP WORKSHOPS

The success of regional and cluster group Professional Development workshops has been outstanding this year. Casio in conjunction with respective Mathematics and Science Co-ordinators has conducted practical workshops to cater for the need for teacher training in the use of graphics calculators and dataloggers in the classroom. Workshops have been held in states all over Australia. NSW continues to have a large demand for these workshops and many rural schools tend to organise regional workshops. Recently, Queensland schools were invited to evening workshops held in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Townsville and Rockhampton. These proved to be very popular and were very well attended, as did the workshops held in Tasmania earlier this year. Casio is also very proud of the first user group meeting held in conjunction with MAWA, in early October. An advantage of organising these larger workshops is the potential to develop a network of schools who can share ideas, resources and who provide each other with support. Feedback received about these sessions has been very postive and Casio will continue to offer this option as part its free professional development program. Due to the popularity of these workshops and the preparation involved bookings need to be made in advance. We encourage both City and rural schools to take advantage of this service.

Providing teachers of South Australia with on-going Professional Development.
The success of LUMAT in South Australia can be largely attributed to the dedication of Anthony Harradine from Prince Alfred College. As co-ordinator of the project, together with fellow staff members Deb Woodard- Knight and Grant Davis materials are produced that are specific to the South Australian syllabuses. Its success, since it inception two years ago has exceeded all expectations and the enrolment figures now exceed 300! Each rural area has a key presenter. It is also due to their commitment that the program has been so successful in all areas of SA. Feedback about the materials and all presenters has been extremely positive. CASIO would like to thank all those involved!

Learning using Mathematics avec Technology (LUMAT) is a joint initiative between Casio and Prince Alfred College, to provide teachers state wide (both City and Country) with free ongoing professional development.
The focus is on integrating technology into the teaching and learning of mathematics, with the major form of technology being the Casio 9850GB Plus Graphics Calculator. Enter the Graph mode and Press SHIFT F3 and change the View-Window to the initial settings then press EXE. Delete any graphs you have there by highlighting each one of them and pressing F2(DEL) F1(YES). Press F3(Type) then F6 and F1 (Y>) and enter the equation Y1>X2-2. Follow a similar process to enter Y2<X Pressing F6(DRAW) will give you the intersection of these two inequalities as shown opposite but what if we want to display the union. Highlight Y2 and press F1(SEL). This will deselect Y2 which means it will NOT be drawn. Press F6(DRAW) then press OPTN F1(PICT) F1(STO) F1(Pic1). This stores this picture. Now draw just Y<X by selecting it and deselecting Y1 then press OPTN F1(PICT) F2(RCL) F1(Pic1) to recall the original picture thus giving the union of the two inequalities as shown below.

Seeing Answers in on the CFX 9850GB+
When calculations involving degrees are done on the CFX9850GB+, the answer is returned as a decimal. However, often students need to see the answer in . HOW DO WE DO THIS?
1. As always, when in doubt press OPTN. If ANGLE is selected from the option menu the options are seen as shown (Fig 1) 2. However, when EXE is pressed to perform the calculation, a new option is presented above F5 (Fig 2). Note that the option is only available once a calculation has been performed. 3. Pressing F5 will then convert the decimal answer to a answer (Fig 3). Easy!
Which probes can I use with the Casio EA-100 Data Logger and the 9850GB plus graphics calculator? All of them. The program GET DATA2 is easily customised to any probe, either by calibration or by entering an equation found in the probe manual. There are also many other programs designed for specific probes, available from Casio.
