Seatback Latches (2-Door Models)
The front seatback folds forward to let people get into the back seat. To fold a front seatback forward, lift the latch located on the lower back side of the seatback. Then the seat will fold forward.
yellowblue When you return the seatback to its original position, make sure the seatback is locked. The latch must be down for the seat to work properly.
Easy Entry Seat (If Equipped)
CAUTION: CAUTION:
If the seatback isnt locked, it could move forward in a sudden stop or crash. That could cause injury to the person sitting there. Always press rearward on the seatback to be sure it is locked. If an easy entry right front seat isnt locked, it can move. In a sudden stop or crash, the person sitting there could be injured. After youve used it, be sure to push rearward on an easy entry seat to be sure it is locked. The right front seat of some two-door vehicles makes it easy to get in and out of the rear seat.
D Tilt the right front seatback completely forward and
the whole seat will slide forward.
D Move the right front seatback to its original position D Tilt the seatback completely forward again to
get out.
after someone gets into the rear seat area. Then move the seat rearward until it locks.
Rear Seats
Folding the Rear Seat
To close the seat, push the seatback up to its original position. To open the fold-down rear seat, pull forward on the seat tab. Check to ensure the seatback is in its original position and securely latched by pulling forward on the top of the seatback. Move any obstructions in the trunk compartment.
Safety Belts: Theyre for Everyone
This part of the manual tells you how to use safety belts properly. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts. And it explains the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), or air bag system.
It is extremely dangerous to ride in a cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and safety belts. Be sure everyone in your vehicle is in a seat and using a safety belt properly.
Dont let anyone ride where he or she cant wear a safety belt properly. If you are in a crash and youre not wearing a safety belt, your injuries can be much worse. You can hit things inside the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, you might not be if you are buckled up. Always fasten your safety belt, and check that your passengers belts are fastened properly too.
Your vehicle has a light that comes on as a reminder to buckle up. (See Safety Belt Reminder Light in the Index.)
yellowblue In most states and Canadian provinces, the law says to wear safety belts. Heres why: They work. You never know if youll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you dont know if it will be a bad one. A few crashes are mild, and some crashes can be so serious that even buckled up a person wouldnt survive. But most crashes are in between. In many of them, people who buckle up can survive and sometimes walk away. Without belts they could have been badly hurt or killed. After more than 30 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most crashes buckling up does matter. a lot!
Where to Put the Restraint
Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat. We at General Motors therefore recommend that you put your child restraint in the rear seat. Never put a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat. Heres why:
Top Strap
If your child restraint has a top strap, it should be anchored. If you have a convertible, dont use a restraint like that in your vehicle because the top strap anchor cannot be installed properly. You shouldnt use this type of restraint without anchoring the top strap. If your vehicle is not a convertible and you need to have an anchor installed, you can ask your dealer to put one in for you. This work will be done for you free of charge. If you want to install an anchor yourself, your dealer can tell you how to do it.
Canadian law requires that forward-facing child restraints have a top strap, and that the strap be anchored.
Securing a Child Restraint in a Rear Outside Seat Position
Youll be using the lap-shoulder belt. See the earlier part about the top strap if the child restraint has one. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. Secure the child in the child restraint when and as the instructions say. 1. Put the restraint on the seat. 2. Pick up the latch plate, and run the lap and shoulder portions of the vehicles safety belt through or around the restraint. The child restraint instructions will show you how. 3. Tilt the latch plate to adjust the belt if needed. If the shoulder belt goes in front of the childs face or neck, put it behind the child restraint.
4. Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
5. To tighten the belt, pull up on the shoulder belt while you push down on the child restraint. If youre using a forward-facing child restraint, you may find it helpful to use your knee to push down on the child restraint as you tighten the belt. 6. Push and pull the child restraint in different directions to be sure it is secure.
yellowblue To remove the child restraint, just unbuckle the vehicles safety belt and let it go back all the way. The safety belt will move freely again and be ready to work for an adult or larger child passenger.
Securing a Child Restraint in the Center Rear Seat Position
Youll be using the lap belt. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. Secure the child in the child restraint when and as the instructions say. See the earlier part about the top strap if the child restraint has one.
yellowblue Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear seat. But they need to use the safety belts properly.
Never do this. Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt cant properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time.
D Children who arent buckled up can be thrown out in
a crash.
D Children who arent buckled up can strike other
people who are.
What if a child is wearing a lap-shoulder belt, but the child is so small that the shoulder belt is very close to the childs face or neck? Move the child toward the center of the vehicle, but be sure that the shoulder belt still is on the childs shoulder, so that in a crash the childs upper body would have the restraint that belts provide. If the child is sitting in a rear seat outside position, see Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides in the Index. If the child is so small that the shoulder belt is still very close to the childs face or neck, you might want to place the child in the center seat position, the one that has only a lap belt.
Never do this. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. The belts force would then be applied right on the childs abdomen. That could cause serious or fatal injuries. Wherever the child sits, the lap portion of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the childs thighs. This applies belt force to the childs pelvic bones in a crash.
Safety Belt Extender
If the vehicles safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt isnt long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. Its free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you. The extender will be just for you, and just for the seat in your vehicle that you choose. Dont let someone else use it, and use it only for the seat it is made to fit. To wear it, just attach it to the regular safety belt.
Replacing Restraint System Parts After a Crash
If youve had a crash, do you need new belts? After a very minor collision, nothing may be necessary. But if the belts were stretched, as they would be if worn during a more severe crash, then you need new belts. If belts are cut or damaged, replace them. Collision damage also may mean you will need to have safety belt or seat parts repaired or replaced. New parts and repairs may be necessary even if the belt wasnt being used at the time of the collision. If an air bag inflates, youll need to replace air bag system parts. See the part on the air bag system earlier in this section.
Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. A child or others could be badly injured or even killed. They could operate power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. Dont leave the keys in a vehicle with children.
yellowblue One key is used for the ignition, the doors and all other locks. If you need a new key, contact your Chevrolet dealer who can obtain the correct key code. In an emergency, call the Chevrolet Roadside Assistance Program at 1-800-CHEV-USAR (1-800-243-8872). In Canada call 1-800-268-6800.
Your vehicle has a number of new features that can help prevent theft. But you can have a lot of trouble getting into your vehicle if you ever lock your key inside. You may even have to damage your vehicle to get in. So be sure you have an extra key.
When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer removes the key tag from the key, and gives it to the first owner. Each tag has a code on it that tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys. Keep the tag in a safe place. If you lose your key, youll be able to have a new one made easily using the tag.
Door Locks CAUTION:
Unlocked doors can be dangerous. Passengers -- especially children -- can easily open the doors and fall out. When a door is locked, the inside handle wont open it. Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked door when you slow down or stop your vehicle. This may not be so obvious: You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors arent locked. Wear safety belts properly, lock your doors, and you will be far better off whenever you drive your vehicle. There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle. Use your key to unlock your vehicle from the outside. You can also use the optional remote keyless entry system to unlock your vehicle. See Remote Keyless Entry System in the Index.
To lock the door from the inside, push the locking lever forward.
To unlock the door, pull the locking lever backward.
Power Door Locks (If Equipped)
You can lock or unlock all doors of your vehicle from the drivers or front passengers door lock switch.
Center Console Cupholders
Open the center console lid all the way to uncover the front and rear cupholders. There is also a cupholder at the front of the console.
Dont hold a cigarette lighter in with your hand while it is heating. If you do, it wont be able to back away from the heating element when its ready. That can make it overheat, damaging the lighter and the heating element. To clean the center console ashtray, remove the entire ashtray and empty it. To clean the rear ashtray, open it, push down on the snuffer, and pull it out.
Sun Visors
To block out glare, you can swing down the visors. You can also swing them to the side.
Accessory Power Outlet (If Equipped)
The accessory power outlet is located on the instrument panel to the right of the steering wheel. Just remove the plug from the outlet and follow the proper installation instructions that are included with any electrical equipment you install. These circuits are protected by a fuse and have maximum current levels.
Dont put papers and other things that burn into your ashtrays. If you do, cigarettes or other smoking materials could set them on fire, causing damage.
Sunroof (If Equipped)
Press and release the rear of the switch and the glass panel will open to the vent position.
Convertible Top (If Equipped)
The following steps explain the proper operation of your convertible top.
D Remove any items from the convertible top
storage area before you lower the top. Even small items in the storage area can damage the top or other parts of the system. Dont raise or lower the convertible top when the temperature is below 20_F (-7_C). The cold can cause cracks and other damage to the top as it is being lowered or raised. Dont raise or lower the convertible top while the vehicle is moving. The wind could damage the top. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop before attempting to raise or lower the top. Always make sure that the top is securely latched before driving the vehicle.
Open the sunshade by hand when using the vent position. Press and release the rear of the switch again to open the glass panel and the sunshade. Press the front of the switch to stop the panel in any position. Press and hold the front of the switch to close the glass panel. The sunshade can only be closed by hand. The sunroof glass panel cannot be opened or closed if your vehicle has an electrical failure.

The AUTO TONE setting stored for that pushbutton will be automatically chosen. Press P.SCAN or one of the pushbuttons again to stop scanning. P.SCAN will be displayed whenever the tuner is in the P.SCAN mode. The channel number (P1-P6) will appear momentarily just before the frequency is displayed. In FM mode, this function will scan through both FM1 and FM2 preset stations and FM1 or FM2 will appear on the display.
Understanding Radio Reception
AM The range for most AM stations is greater than for FM, especially at night. The longer range, however, can cause stations to interfere with each other. AM can pick up noise from things like storms and power lines. Try reducing the treble to reduce this noise if you ever get it.
yellowblue FM Stereo FM stereo will give you the best sound, but FM signals will reach only about 10 to 40 miles (16 to 65 km). Tall buildings or hills can interfere with FM signals, causing the sound to come and go.
Before you add any sound equipment to your vehicle -- like a tape player, CB radio, mobile telephone or two-way radio -- be sure you can add what you want. If you can, its very important to do it properly. Added sound equipment may interfere with the operation of your vehicles engine, Delco Electronics radio or other systems, and even damage them. Your vehicles systems may interfere with the operation of sound equipment that has been added improperly. So, before adding sound equipment, check with your dealer and be sure to check Federal rules covering mobile radio and telephone units.
Tips About Your Audio System
Hearing damage from loud noise is almost undetectable until it is too late. Your hearing can adapt to higher volumes of sound. Sound that seems normal can be loud and harmful to your hearing. Take precautions by adjusting the volume control on your radio to a safe sound level before your hearing adapts to it. To help avoid hearing loss or damage:
D Adjust the volume control to the lowest setting. D Increase volume slowly until you hear comfortably
and clearly.
Care of Your Cassette Tape Player
A tape player that is not cleaned regularly can cause reduced sound quality, ruined cassettes or a damaged mechanism. Cassette tapes should be stored in their cases away from contaminants, direct sunlight and extreme heat. If they arent, they may not operate properly or may cause failure of the tape player. Your tape player should be cleaned regularly after every 50 hours of use. Your radio may display CLN to indicate that you have used your tape player for 50 hours without resetting the tape clean timer. If this message appears on the display, your cassette tape player needs to be cleaned. It will still play tapes, but you should clean it as soon as possible to prevent damage to your tapes and player. If you notice a reduction in sound quality, try a known good cassette to see if it is the tape or the tape player at fault. If this other cassette has no improvement in sound quality, clean the tape player. The recommended cleaning method for your cassette tape player is the use of a scrubbing action, non-abrasive cleaning cassette with pads which scrub the tape head as the hubs of the cleaner cassette turn. The recommended cleaning cassette is available through your dealership (GM Part No. 12344789).

Maintenance When Trailer Towing
Your vehicle will need service more often when youre pulling a trailer. See the Maintenance Schedule for more on this. Things that are especially important in trailer operation are automatic transaxle fluid (dont overfill), engine oil, drive belt, cooling system and brake system. Each of these is covered in this manual, and the Index will help you find them quickly. If youre trailering, its a good idea to review this information before you start your trip. Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and bolts are tight.

Hazard Warning Flashers
Move the switch to the right to make your front and rear turn signal lamps flash on and off.
Your hazard warning flashers work no matter what position your key is in, and even if the key isnt in. To turn off the flashers, move the switch to the left. When the hazard warning flashers are on, your turn signals wont work. Your hazard warning flashers let you warn others. They also let police know you have a problem. Your front and rear turn signal lamps will flash on and off.
Other Warning Devices
If you carry reflective triangles, you can set one up at the side of the road about 300 feet (100 m) behind your vehicle.
Ignoring these steps could result in costly damage to your vehicle that wouldnt be covered by your warranty. The ACDelco FreedomR battery in your vehicle has a built-in hydrometer. Do not charge, test or jump start the battery if the hydrometer looks clear or light yellow. Replace the battery when there is a clear or light yellow hydrometer and a cranking complaint. Trying to start your vehicle by pushing or pulling it wont work, and it could damage your vehicle. 1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt battery with a negative ground system.
yellowblue If the coolant inside the coolant surge tank is boiling, dont do anything else until it cools down.
Heater and radiator hoses, and other engine parts, can be very hot. Dont touch them. If you do, you can be burned. Dont run the engine if there is a leak. If you run the engine, it could lose all coolant. That could cause an engine fire, and you could be burned. Get any leak fixed before you drive the vehicle.
The coolant level should be at the FULL COLD mark. If it isnt, you may have a leak in the radiator hoses, heater hoses, radiator, water pump or somewhere else in the cooling system. Engine damage from running your engine without coolant isnt covered by your warranty.
When adding coolant, it is important that you use only DEX-COOLR (silicate-free) coolant. If coolant other than DEX-COOL is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner -- at 30,000 miles (km) or 24 months, whichever occurs first. Damage caused by the use of coolant other than DEX-COOLR is not covered by your new vehicle warranty. If there seems to be no leak, with the engine on, check to see if the electric engine cooling fan is running. If the engine is overheating, the fan should be running. If it isnt, your vehicle needs service.
How to Add Coolant to the Coolant Surge Tank
If you havent found a problem yet, but the coolant level isnt at the FULL COLD mark, add a 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOLR coolant at the coolant surge tank, but be sure the cooling system, including the coolant surge tank pressure cap, is cool before you do it. (See Engine Coolant in the Index for more information.)
Steam and scalding liquids from a hot cooling system can blow out and burn you badly. They are under pressure, and if you turn the coolant surge tank pressure cap -- even a little -- they can come out at high speed. Never turn the cap when the cooling system, including the coolant surge tank pressure cap, is hot. Wait for the cooling system and coolant surge tank pressure cap to cool if you ever have to turn the pressure cap.
Adding only plain water to your cooling system can be dangerous. Plain water, or some other liquid like alcohol, can boil before the proper coolant mixture will. Your vehicles coolant warning system is set for the proper coolant mixture. With plain water or the wrong mixture, your engine could get too hot but you wouldnt get the overheat warning. Your engine could catch fire and you or others could be burned. Use a 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOLR coolant.
In cold weather, water can freeze and crack the engine, radiator, heater core and other parts. So use the recommended coolant.
You can be burned if you spill coolant on hot engine parts. Coolant contains ethylene glycol and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough. Dont spill coolant on a hot engine.
system -- for example, when your brake linings wear down and you have to have new ones put in -- be sure you get new approved GM replacement parts. If you dont, your brakes may no longer work properly. For example, if someone puts in brake linings that are wrong for your vehicle, the balance between your front and rear brakes can change -- for the worse. The braking performance youve come to expect can change in many other ways if someone puts in the wrong replacement brake parts.
Battery
Replacing Brake System Parts
The braking system on a vehicle is complex. Its many parts have to be of top quality and work well together if the vehicle is to have really good braking. Your vehicle was designed and tested with top-quality GM brake parts. When you replace parts of your braking
Your new vehicle comes with an ACDelco FreedomR battery. When its time for a new battery, we recommend an ACDelco Freedom battery. Get one that has the replacement number shown on the original batterys label.
Vehicle Storage
If youre not going to drive your vehicle for 25 days or more, remove the black, negative (-) cable from the battery. This will help keep your battery from running down.
Batteries have acid that can burn you and gas that can explode. You can be badly hurt if you arent careful. See Jump Starting in the Index for tips on working around a battery without getting hurt. Contact your dealer to learn how to prepare your vehicle for longer storage periods. Also, for your audio system, see Theft-Deterrent Feature in the Index.
Bulb Replacement
The following procedures tell you how to replace the bulbs for your vehicle. For the type of bulb to use, see Replacement Bulbs in the Index. For any bulb changing procedure not listed in this section, contact your Chevrolet dealers service department.
Halogen Bulbs
Halogen bulbs have pressurized gas inside and can burst if you drop or scratch the bulb. You or others could be injured. Be sure to read and follow the instructions on the bulb package.
1. Remove the first bolt. Then remove the remaining plastic fasteners holding the shield. Use the end of a flat-head screwdriver to pull up the center of the fastener. Be careful not to break the fasteners that hold the shield in place.
2. Remove the other bolt that anchors the headlamp assembly. Pull the headlamp assembly toward the front of the vehicle to access the bulb assembly. When replacing the drivers side headlamp, twist the bulb assembly one-eighth of a turn counterclockwise and remove it from the headlamp assembly. When replacing the passengers side headlamp, twist the bulb assembly one-eighth of a turn clockwise and remove it from the headlamp assembly.
Center High-Mounted Stoplamp (Models Without a Spoiler)
To change the bulb, do the following: 1. Open the trunk and view the access hole under the rear shelf. 2. Remove the bulb sockets by turning and pull down. 3. Remove the bulb and replace. 4. Re-install the new bulb and socket into the CHMSL.
Center High-Mounted Stoplamp (Models With a Spoiler)
To change the bulb, do the following: 3. Disconnect the bulb base from the socket by lifting the plastic locking tab. 4. Snap a new bulb into the socket. 5. Replace the bulb assembly by reversing Steps 1 through 3, making sure the lower leg of the headlamp bracket is properly seated into the wedge-shaped retainer. 1. Use a TORXR screwdriver to unscrew the bulb assembly from the spoiler. 2. Gently pull out the bulb assembly. 3. Remove the bulb(s) by gently wiggling the bulb from the assembly. 4. Replace the bulb(s) and reverse these steps to replace the bulb assembly.
Taillamps and Rear Turn Signal Lamps
3. To remove the bulb, pull it out. To replace a bulb, do the following: 1. Remove the fastener which holds down the trunk trim. On vehicles without a convenience net, pry the fastener loose. On vehicles with a convenience net, remove the net and unscrew the fastener. Then pull down the trunk trim. 2. Remove the assembly by turning it one-quarter of a turn counterclockwise. 4. Push in a new bulb. 5. Reverse all steps to replace the taillamp assembly.
Back-Up Lamps To replace a back-up lamp, do the following: 1. Open the trunk lid and locate the back-up lamp
assembly on the trunk lid. 2. Gently remove the bulb from the socket by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it out. 3. Replace the bulb in the socket by aligning the tabs and turning clockwise.

Customer Satisfaction Procedure
Your satisfaction and goodwill are important to your dealer and to Chevrolet. Normally, any concerns with the sales transaction or the operation of your vehicle will be resolved by your dealers sales or service departments. Sometimes, however, despite the best intentions of all concerned, misunderstandings can occur. If your concern has not been resolved to your satisfaction, the following steps should be taken: STEP ONE -- Discuss your concern with a member of dealership management. Normally, concerns can be quickly resolved at that level. If the matter has already been reviewed with the sales, service or parts manager, contact the owner of the dealership or the general manager.
yellowblue STEP TWO -- If after contacting a member of dealership management, it appears your concern cannot be resolved by the dealership without further help, contact the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center by calling 1-800-222-1020. In Canada, contact GM of Canada Customer Communication Centre in Oshawa by calling 1-800-263-3777 (English) or 1-800-263-7854 (French). We encourage you to call the toll-free number in order to give your inquiry prompt attention. Please have the following information available to give the Customer Assistance Representative: When contacting Chevrolet, please remember that your concern will likely be resolved at a dealers facility. That is why we suggest you follow Step One first if you have a concern. STEP THREE -- Both General Motors and your dealer are committed to making sure you are completely satisfied with your new vehicle.
