The Clarion APA2104 car audio amplifier (show in Figure 1) is a 2-channel amplifier that delivers 50 watts (RMS), into 2 channel or 125 watts into 1 channel. Depending on your application, this amplifiers is an excellent choice of customizing your car audio system. All connections and controls are on end panels and are straightforward and easy to understand. We use gold-plated RCA and barrier connectors to ensure the best electrical connection for your system. Included are external automotive-type fuses that are easy to replace.
Adjusting the Bass Extender To boost low frequency bass information in your car audio system, Clarion recommends starting with the Bass Extender LPF/HPF control set to 200Hz (full CW) and the GAIN control set at +6dB. Listen to a variety of music styles (Rock, Rap, R&B, etc.) and slowly decrease the LPF/HPF control until no noticeable increase in low bass response is perceived. Adjust the GAIN control up or down slowly to realize the best low bass response. Caution: If the speakers begin to pop (speaker over excursion), lower the GAIN control or raise the LPF/HPF control to prevent speaker damage. If the speakers begin to sound muddy and distorted (amplifier clipping), lower the GAIN control to avoid constant amplifier shutdown from overheating or raise the LPF/HPF control until clear bass response returns.

On the APA2104, the gold-plated power terminals are labeled (left to right) as REMOTE (remote turn-on) , GROUND, BATTERY. The speaker terminals are also gold-plated. The INPUT connectors on the APA2104 are gold-plated RCA jacks, marked [CH1] for the Left channel and [CH2] for the Right channel. 1. 2.

Einstellen des Bass Extender Um die tiefen Bsse der Auto-Audioanlage anzuheben, empfiehlt Clarion, den LPF/ HPF-Regler zunchst in Stellung 200 Hz (rechte Anschlagstellung) und den BASS EXTENDER-Regler in Stellung 6 dB zu bringen. Strong power supply Based on a policy stressing sound quality, the APA2104 uses a high performance MOS-FET and a strong power supply circuit with a push-pull PWM DC-DC converter and high capacity, low impedance capacitors. This makes for an extremely stable supply of power despite the harsh power fluctuations and environmental changes particular to cars. Designed for high sound quality Low-noise, high slew rate operational amplifier and layered film capacitors reproduce the energetic low bass and clear, undistorted sound provided by such digital sources as Compact Discs and MiniDiscs. Low distortion and wide output range The APA2104 offers stable playback with high output simultaneously from the two channels and low distortion even beyond the range of frequencies audible to the human ear. Distortion is low in the playback frequency range even when signals are simultaneously output to all channels. A channel mode selector switch provides the following high output (rated): 1-channel mode.125W 1 2-channel mode.50W 2 Protection circuit A protection circuit is used to constantly protect against damage to the amplifier from loads, short-circuits, overcurrents, overheating, etc. Bass extender circuitry Adding boost to low frequency sound information produces rich, full bass tones that are normally difficult to reproduce in the car audio environment. The Clarion APA2104 car audio amplifier contains a Constant-Q (wide) Bass Extender Circuit with an adjustable frequency and gain controls. When the High/Low-pass Filter is not active, the Bass Extender gain control acts much like an equalizer, allowing from 0 to 12dB of gain. Unlike most equalizers that only equalize a particular frequency, Clarions Bass Extender frequency control is fully adjustable between 50Hz and 200Hz. Fully adjustable controls allow for precision turning of both equalization frequency and gain to compensate for less than ideal speaker locations, ambient road noise, as well as physical constraints associated with the car audio environment. High/Low-pass filter Clarions APA2104 car audio amplifier has a 12dB per octave switchable electronic High-pass or Low-pass Filter for precise frequency attenuation. The crossover is fully adjustable from 50 and 200Hz allowing for a wide range of crossover points. If your system design doesnt call for crossover, simply leave the switch in the BASS position to take full advantage for the Bass Extender circuit.

Adjusting the High-pass/Low-pass Filter Caution: Clarion recommends turning the amplifier off before changing any switch position. This will eliminate any possible damage from transient spikes to the amplifier or speaker system while changing the switch settings. Turn the Bass/High/Low-pass Filter switch to either the LP (low-pass filter on) or to the HP (High-pass filter on) position when connecting the amplifier to a component speaker driver. In the OFF position, full frequency audio signals are passed through the amplifier to the speaker. Clarion recommends starting the LPF/HPF control set to 50Hz (full CCW) or set the crossover frequency control to the recommended crossover point of the speaker manufacture. Listen to a variety of music styles (Rock, Rap, R&B, etc.) and slowly increase or decrease the LPF/HPF control until the best performance is realized. Note: For most subwoofer systems, the crossover point tends to be between 50 and 120Hz. Setting the crossover frequency too high may cause the audio system to sound boomy or vocals and speech to become very nasal in tone. Consult your speaker manufacturer's crossover specifications before adjusting crossover frequencies for tweeters or midrange components.

8. TECHNICAL TIP - EVERYONE WANTS MORE BASS / TECHNISCHER TIPP - SATTERE
In the car audio environment, subsonic bass information (most people call it thump) requires three components (1) speaker piston area (size of the moving surface), (2) Cone excursion (amount of surface travel), and (3) Power (ability to move the surface). The car audio environment is unique when it comes to the reproduction of bass. Comparing a car audio system to a home system is like comparing apples to oranges, both come from trees that produce sweet fruits, but only one makes orange juice. In the home we can easily propagate (complete on cycle of an audio signal) bass easily, where in a small vehicle we must modulate air pressure to simulate propagation of the bass wave. Speaker piston area and speaker excursion become the critical factors in producing low frequency response. A general rule of thumb to consider is, The smaller the speaker, the greater the mechanical cone travel required to produce low bass. The larger the speaker, the shorter the mechanical cone travel required to produce the same bass response.

A single subwoofer can only produce as much pressure as the piston area and the amount of mechanical cone excursion allow. Throwing more power on a single subwoofer may not be the best answer to more bass response. Adding multiple subwoofers to an audio system is often more economical than adding sheer brute amplifier power. The best answer may be a combination of factors: larger speakers, multiple drivers, bigger amplifiers, or a combination of all the above. Massive amounts of bass often require purchasing massive quantities of subwoofer drivers and multiple amplifier. This may lead to modification of the cars electrical system, or special installation skills necessary to design and install multiple subwoofer speakers. How much is enough? This section lists mounting and wiring precautions for installing the Clarion APA2104 car audio amplifier. Combined with the experience of a professional installer, these safeguards are sufficiently detailed to successfully complete installation. If you do not have the necessary skills, do not install the amplifier yourself. Instead, see your authorized Clarion dealer for installation recommendations. Mounting Precautions Although this Clarion amplifier incorporates a large heat sink and protection circuits, mounting any amplifier in a confined space without any air movement can still damage internal circuits over time. Choose a site that provides adequate ventilation around the amplifier. For easy system set-up, mount the amplifier so the controls and fuse will be accessible after installation. In addition, observe these precautions: For the most efficient cooling, mount the amplifier so cool air runs along the length of the heatsink. Remember, any moving air will dissipate heat. Mount the amplifier on a rigid surface. Do not install the amplifier on plastic or other combustible material. Prior to drilling, make sure proposed mounting holes will not cut into the fuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines (under chassis), or electrical wiring. Wiring Precautions Read all wiring precautions. If you are not sure of the connections, contact your authorized Clarion dealer. Before installation, make sure the head unit power switch is turned OFF. Disconnect the negative () lead at the battery before making any power connections. When making connections, be sure that each connection is clean and secure. Insulate final connections with electrical tape or shrink tubing. Failure to do so may damage your equipment. A secure, clean ground connection is critical to the performance of your Clarion car audio amplifier. Use the shortest ground wire possible to minimize resistance and avoid noise problems. Add an external fuse on the positive (+) power lead and connect it as close as possible to the vehicle's (+) battery terminal. Use a rating that equals the total current consumption at full output of all amplifiers in the system. Adding an external fuse will protect the electrical system from short-circuits that can cause fire. Refer to Figure 6 when making electrical connections. Connect the amplifiers positive (+) power lead via a fuse directly to the positive (+) terminal on the car battery. Do not connect this wire to the cars fuse panel. Use red-insulated 12gauge (or larger) wire for the amplifier's positive (+) power lead and the same gauge black-insulated wire for the gorund. When replacing the amplifier's fuse, always use one having the same current rating. Substituting with a higher-rated fuse can reduce protection and may result in serious damage to the amplifier. Never ground the speakers to the vehicle chassis or body. Make sure that your vehicle's electrical system (i.e., alternator, battery, etc.) is capable of handling the additional load. If you are planning to install a multiamplifier system, you may need to add a second battery and possibly upgrade the alternator with a higher-output-rated model. Consult your Clarion dealer for recommendations. To avoid possible noise problems, run the amplifier's positive (+) power lead along one side of the vehicle to the battery. Run the remote turn-on wire and RCA audio cable down the center, and route the speaker wires along the remaining side. If wires must cross, run them perpendicular to each other. When creating passage holes for the power wire, use grommets to eliminate any sharp edges created during drilling. This will protect the wire from bring nicked and causing a short-circuit. Extra cable cause signal loss and act as an antenna for noise. Use only highquality RCA cables that are no longer than necessary to make a direct connection with the head unit or equalizer.
