Removal and replacement procedures
Preliminary replacement requirements
Tools required
You will need the following tools to complete the removal and replacement procedures: Flat-bladed screwdriver Magnetic screwdriver Phillips P0 and P1 screwdrivers
Service considerations
The following sections include some of the considerations that you must keep in mind during disassembly and assembly procedures. NOTE: As you remove each subassembly from the computer, place the subassembly (and all accompanying screws) away from the work area to prevent damage.
Plastic parts
Using excessive force during disassembly and reassembly can damage plastic parts. Use care when handling the plastic parts. Apply pressure only at the points designated in the maintenance instructions.
Chapter 4 Removal and replacement procedures
Cables and connectors
CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer. Cables must be handled with extreme care to avoid damage. Apply only the tension required to unseat or seat the cables during removal and insertion. Handle cables by the connector whenever possible. In all cases, avoid bending, twisting, or tearing cables. Be sure that cables are routed in such a way that they cannot be caught or snagged by parts being removed or replaced. Handle flex cables with extreme care; these cables tear easily.
When replacing the system board, be sure that the following components are removed from the defective system board and installed on the replacement system board: Memory modules (see Memory module on page 43) WLAN module (see WLAN module on page 45) RTC battery (see RTC battery on page 75) Card reader board (see Card reader board on page 77) Heat sink (see Heat sink on page 79) Processor (see Processor on page 81) Power connector cable (see Power connector cable on page 83)
Remove the system board: 1. 2. 3. 4. Remove the power connector (1) from the clip built into the base enclosure. Remove the power connector cable (2) from the routing channel and clips built into the base enclosure. Remove the black Phillips PM2.54.0 screw (3) that secures the system board to the base enclosure. Disconnect the USB board cable (4) from the system board.
Flex the front edge of the base enclosure (1) outward to provide clearance for the audio connectors (2). Use the optical drive connector (3) to lift the right side of the system board (4) until it rests at an angle.
Remove the system board (5) by pulling it away from the base enclosure at an angle.
Reverse the preceding procedure to install the system board.
RTC battery
NOTE: Removing the RTC battery and leaving it uninstalled for 5 or more minutes causes all passwords and CMOS settings to be cleared.
Description RTC battery (includes double-sided tape) Spare part number 454947-001
Before removing the RTC battery, follow these steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 40). Remove the following components: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 41) Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 48) Keyboard (see Keyboard on page 50) Switch cover (see Switch cover on page 53) Display assembly (see Display assembly on page 55) Top cover (see Top cover on page 62) System board (see System board on page 72)
Remove the RTC battery: 1. 2. Turn the system board upside down, with the audio connectors toward you. Disconnect the RTC battery cable (1) from the system board.
Remove the RTC battery (2). NOTE: The RTC battery is attached to the system board with double-sided tape.
Reverse this procedure to install the RTC battery.
Card reader board
Description Card reader board Spare part number 454949-001

Setup Utility
WARNING! Only authorized technicians trained by HP must repair this equipment. All troubleshooting and repair procedures are detailed to allow repair at only the subassembly or module level. Because of the complexity of the individual boards and subassemblies, do not attempt to make repairs at the component level or modify any printed wiring board. Improper repairs can create a safety hazard. Any indication of component replacement or printed wiring board modification may void any warranty or exchange allowances.
Starting the Setup Utility
The Setup Utility is a ROM-based information and customization utility that can be used even when your Windows operating system is not working or will not load. NOTE: The fingerprint reader (select models only) does not work when accessing the Setup Utility. The utility reports information about the computer and provides settings for startup, security, and other preferences. To start the Setup Utility: 1. 2. Turn on or restart the computer. 110 Chapter 8 Backup and recovery
Backup suggestions
Create a set of recovery discs using Recovery Manager. Create system restore points using the Windows System Restore feature, and periodically copy them to disc. Store personal files in the Documents folder and back up these folders periodically. Back up templates stored in their associated programs. Save customized settings in a window, toolbar, or menu bar by taking a screen shot of your settings. The screen shot can be a time saver if you have to reset your preferences. To copy the screen and paste it into a word-processing document: a. b. Display the screen. Copy the screen: To copy only the active window, press alt+fn+prt sc. To copy the entire screen, press fn+prt sc. c. Open a word-processing document, and then select Edit > Paste.
Using system restore points
When you back up your system, you are creating a system restore point. A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recover back to that point if you want to reverse subsequent changes made to your system. NOTE: Recovering to an earlier restore point does not affect data files saved or e-mails created since the last restore point. You also can create additional restore points to provide increased protection for your system files and settings.
When to create restore points
Before you add or extensively modify software or hardware. Periodically, whenever the system is performing optimally. NOTE: If you revert to a restore point and then change your mind, you can reverse the restoration.
Create a system restore point
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Select Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System. In the left pane, click System protection. Click the System Protection tab. Under Automatic restore points, select the disk for which you want to create a restore point. Click Create.
