When handling products that may come into contact with electric voltage, you have to observe the valid VDE regulations, especially VDE 0100, VDE 0550/0551, VDE 0700, VDE 0711 and VDE 0860.
Contact an expert if you have any doubt about how the module works or about how to connect it. The module may only be put into operation if it was previously installed in the casing protected from contact. The power must be switched off when installing the module. All wiring work must be performed while the power is off. The direct contact with water must be avoided under all circumstances. 27
Do not use the module in rooms or at unfavourable ambient conditions in which are or could be combustible gases, vapours or dust. Prior to each operation, check your module device and its cables for damage(s). If you have reasons to assume that the safe operation is not possible any longer, then disconnect the appliance immediately and secure it against inadvertent operation. Reasons to assume that the safe operation is not possible any longer include the following ones: - the appliance is visibly damaged, - the device no longer works - if it has been stored for long periods of time under unfavourable conditions - if it has been subject to considerable stress in transit. Never switch the device on immediately after having taken it from a cold to a warm environment. The condensation water generated could destroy the device. Allow the device to reach room temperature before switching it on. Do not leave the packaging material lying around carelessly. Plastic foils and bags, polystyrene parts etc. can become dangerous toys in the hands of children. In schools, training centres, computer and self-help workshops, handling of technical devices must be supervised by trained personnel in a responsible manner. In commercial institutions, the accident prevention regulations of the relevant professional insurance association for electrical systems and operating materials are to be observed. Connections and LEDs

INPUTS There are inputs for the operating voltage on one side (no. 1), for two temperature sensors (no. 2), an analog connection (no. 3) and for both optocouplers (no. 4). Observe the maximum input voltage of 12 V/DC on the optocoupler inputs! OUTPUTS There are outputs on the other side to which a red LED is connected for status display with exception of the DAC. A relay is already connected to the call output INCALL (no. 5) and the first SMS output SMS1 (no. 6). Observe the maximum relay current of 8 Ampere (24VDC/250VAC). You can directly connect relays to the three other SMS outputs (no. 7) and the four temperature outputs (no. 8, Conrad order no. 502892). A voltage of approx. 138 mV up to approx. 2.61 V can be output at the DAC output (no. 9). ANTENNA The antenna is connected directly to the SONY-ERICSSON module. You should first check the receiver quality at the intended application site with a mobile phone. An adhesive strip is located at the end of the antenna on the back. Pull off the adhesive strip and attach the module as far away as possible from the module. SIM CARD The SIM card is inserted on the back of the circuit board in the support.

Installation Do not insert the SIM card yet! Do not yet connect the GSM module with the USB cable of your PC. If you have already connected it, disconnect it again! First install the USB driver for the module and the control software with the enclosed CD and follow the installation instructions. Now connect the supplied USB cable with the PC and follow the instructions. Now the device manager detects a new (virtual) COM port. Connect the antenna to the SONY-ERICSSON module and attach this as far away from the module as possible. Now connect the operating voltage. The green GSM LED (no. 11) starts to blink after a while. Without inserted SIM card (or wrong pin), the module enters the programming mode Start the software Control module at START/PROGRAMS/GSM MODULE, set all desired parameters and transmit the data to the module. Once the configuration was transmitted, the module performs a restart. Now you need the SIM card. Disconnect the operating voltage again. You also need an activated SIM card issued by any provider for commissioning. The PIN of the SIM card must be 4-digit and PIN query must be activated, meaning the PIN query must appear when you insert the card into a mobile phone. 33
Now check the receiver properties: To do so, insert the card into a mobile phone and check the transmission quality (normally shown on the display) at the site where the antenna will be located. Now insert the SIM card in the SIM support on the back of the module. To do so, shift the cover of the SIM support slightly and fold it open. Insert the SIM card into the cover, close it and and arrest it by sliding. Observe the marking on the card.

When you click onto the button General settings, an interface appears for entering the SIM cards PIN number, the desired phone numbers (PHONE), fax numbers (FAX) and e-mail addresses (MAIL). SIM Here you have to enter the four-digit PIN of the inserted SIM card. The PIN query on the card must be activated (meaning when you insert the card in a mobile phone and turn it on, the PIN query must appear!). You can assign a password with which everyone sending the password can switch: this lets you switch the 4 SMS outputs and the DAC output from any mobile phone and request an SMS response. The password must have 8 digits. If you enter a shorter password, you must attach the corresponding blanks with the SMS (see example on chapter 4 SMS outputs). 35
For sending e-mails, you have to state the provider of the inserted SIM card. Previously the sending and receiving of e-mails must be activated on the SIM card. If you enter the provider here, the right gateway number is set automatically (8000 for T-Mobile, 3400 for Vodafone D2, 7676245 for E-Plus and 6245 for O2) as well as the right fax prefix number (99 for T-Mobile, 88 for Vodafone D2, 1151 for E-Plus and 329 for O2). If your desired number combination is not among these, enter it at other providers (see chapter Information about SMS, FAX and EMAIL). PHONE You can enter up to 12 telephone numbers (PHONE) here. You have to enter all phone numbers from which the module is supposed to be called and receive an SMS and those that can send an SMS to the module. You can enter mobile phone numbers in two different ways: as 01701234567 or +491701234567, but not as 00491701234567. Foreign mobile phone numbers must be entered with +, e.g. Austria with +43. When calling the module and sending an SMS to the module, the number must be transmitted. Phone numbers are limited to 13 digits. FAX You can enter up to 4 fax numbers (FAX) here. You have to enter all fax numbers to which the module is supposed to be able to send a fax. Fax numbers are entered like normal phone numbers, e.g. 01805312110. Do not enter a prefix number here; the module inserts this automatically (see chapter Information on SMS, FAX and EMAIL)! The fax numbers including the prefix number are limited to 20 digits.

MAIL You can enter up to 4 e-mail addresses (MAIL) here (e.g. max.mustermann@conrad.de). You have to enter all e-mail addresses to which the module is supposed to send a mail. The @ must be entered as * (e.g. max.mustermann@conrad.de must be entered as max.mustermann*conrad.de). E-mail addresses are limited to 35 digits.
Information about SMS, FAX and EMAIL
A mobile phone can send an SMS to an e-mail address or a FAX. Your provider needs to activate this service. To do so, send an SMS with the text activate for e-mail to the respective gateway number of the provider. SENDING SMS FROM THE MOBILE PHONE TO AN E-MAIL ADDRESS In order to send a message to an e-mail address, you have to write an SMS which first states the e-mail address followed by a blank and then the text. You have to send this SMS to the providers gateway number. e.g. you send the SMS: max.mustermann@conrad.de This is the message. with T-Mobile to the phone number 8000. SENDING SMS FROM THE MOBILE PHONE TO A FAX Write a normal SMS to send messages to a Fax. When entering the number, you only have to enter the recipient number (prefix) before the actual fax number. e.g. You want to send a Fax to 0180/5312110; you write a normal SMS and send this to 155101805312110 with E-Plus. 37
With this module, the prefix number for sending from a fax only has to be entered on the page SIM and does not have to be entered separately with each fax number. This is automatically set by the module. Caution: The mobile phone owner pays the transmission costs for e-mails at the price of an SMS. A fax cost slightly more, depending on the provider. Received text which consist of more than 160 characters are either shortened or distributed to several SMS. You can also have this service blocked again. To do so, send an SMS with the text Deactivate e-mail to the providers gateway number. The phone number must be transmitted so that the module can see who called or sent an SMS. Refer to the manual of your mobile phone to see how to activate this function. Inputs and outputs

4 SMS OUTPUTS (SMS1 - SMS4) These are the four outputs SMS1 to SMS4 that can be activated/deactivated by sending an SMS to the module. A relay is already connected to the output SMS1. You can directly connect a relay to the other outputs (CONRAD order no. 502892). This relay can switch 8 Ampere at 250V AC or at 24V DC. For each of the four outputs, you can assign a (different) message text each. This text serves to address the output. For switching, the SMS contains the message text of the respective output with the appendix =1 for activating or =0 for deactivating. For activation, e.g. RELAY =1 and for deactivation RELAY1 =0 is sent. Example: You call the output 3 LAMP, because a garden lamp is connected to it. When you now send the SMS LIGHT =1, the output SMS3 is switched on. The SMS LIGHT =0 turns the output SMS3 off again. Note: The text must always contain 8 characters. If the entered text is shorter, you have to enter blanks (marked with stars here: LIGHT***=1). If you click on Sent by anyone, anyone sending this text as SMS can activate/deactivate the output. Or you select the receivers from your list in SMS that may switch this output. Always switch with password means that anyone who knows and sends the password can switch this output. E.g. if your password is SECRET, anyone sending the SMS SECRET LIGHT =1 (with the respective blanks SECRET**LIGHT***=1) can activate the output. The module can return an automatically generated response to make sure that the output was switched. The response is sent to the sender address.
4 TEMPERATURE OUTPUTS see T1/T2 input 1 CALL OUTPUT (INCALL) This is the INCALL output, which switches for a defined time as soon as the module is called. Because the module does not pick up, this is free of charge! You simply call the module and let it ring a few times to be sure. Then the INCALL output switches on for the set time and then off again automatically. This is ideal e.g. for a garage door opener or front door light. The activation time can be set in 12 stages from 2 seconds to 24 hours. With Anyone may call, this output switches on every call, regardless of whether this is contained in the telephone list; it even switches if no phone number is transmitted. But you can also select the phone numbers in your list in TEL that may switch this output. A relay is already connected to the output INCALL. 1 ANALOG DAC OUTPUT (DAC) This is the analog output DAC, whose output voltage can be set via SMS. The output voltage can be set in 255 steps of 9.668mV each from 138mV to 2.61V. If the output is to be set to e.g. 1.5 V, the text DAC=141 must be sent as 1.5V is roughly 0.138V + 141*9,668mV.

Always switch with password means that anyone may switch this output who knows and sends the password, or you select the people in your list at SMS and MAIL who may switch this output. 2 OPTO COUPLER INPUTS (IN1 - IN2) These are the two digital optocoupler inputs IN1 and IN2 for e.g. smoke detectors or burglary detectors (circuits that are interrupted). A voltage of 0 to 12V can be connected to the input of the optocoupler. Observe the polarity! The negative pole is connected on the left, the positive pole on the right. Without external voltage (meaning open), this input is HIGH. If an external voltage is connected, the input becomes LOW and when the circuit is interrupted, HIGH again. If you now set Message when input HIGH is set for the optocoupler input, and the input becomes HIGH due to an interruption of the circuit, the module can automatically return an SMS, a fax or an e-mail with the entered message text. (ALARM IN1: DIGITAL1). Only an SMS is sent; when the input returns to LOW and then to HIGH again, another SMS is sent. This also applies anlaog in the reverse case, if Message when input LOW is set. No output is switched. 1 ANALOG ADC INPUT (ADC) This is another analog ADC input similar to the T1 and T2 input for the temperature sensors. In case a set limit value is exceeded or undercut, the module may automatically return an SMS, a FAX or am e-mail with the entered message text. This input can measure a voltage from 0.01V to 2.75V in 255 steps at 10.742mV each. So if you want to set the limit value to 1.0V, you have to enter 92 at the limit value because 1.0V roughly corresponds to 0.01V + 92*10,742mV.

This is intended e.g. for an analog fill level indicator; the module can issue a warning message before the storage container runs empty or flows over. For limit value definition, you can fill the container to the desired level, read off the value in status and enter this as limit value in the software. No output is switched. 2 TEMPERATURE INPUTS (T1 - T2) / 4 TEMPERATURE OUTPUTS (TMP1 - TMP4) Two temperature sensors (CONRAD order no. 198896) can be connected to the two temperature inputs T1 and T2. The positive pole is connected to the left screw clamp, the signal in the middle and the ground is connected on the right screw clamp. The temperature range of the sensor ranges from -40C to +125C. The input T1 must be selected if only one temperature sensor is used. 0C is output if no sensor is connected. The outputs TMP1 to TMP4 are logically linked with the temperature control. You can directly connect a relay to these outputs (CONRAD order no. 502892). There are two different types of operation: range measurement and difference measurement. RANGE MEASURING: You can set a MAX, MIN and a TARGET temperature value for both temperature sensors. The TARGET value is the defined temperature. If the MAX value is exceeded, output TMP1 or TMP3 is activated automatically (e.g. for a ventilator) until the temperature undercuts the TARGET value again. If the MIN value is undercut, the output TMP2 or TMP4 is activated (e.g. for a heater) until the TARGET value is exceeded again. This generates a hysteresis that prevents the outputs from switching on and off in turn all the time. Example: If you set the MIN the TARGET and the MAX value to the same level (e.g. 25C), the output TMP1 is switched on when exceeding the MAX value (26C) and switched off when reaching the TARGET value (25C). The output TMP2 is switched when the temperature drops below the MIN value (24C). 42

Data transmission

After saving, you can transfer the settings made with the software to the module. As soon as the module is turned on, it tries to dial into the GSM net. Without inserted SIM card or in case of a wrong PIN number (e.g. if the module was not programmed yet), the module automatically goes into programming mode. This is signaled with WAITING FOR DATA. But you can also re-program the module at any time in running operation. In Communication, select the virtual COM entered in the device manager (in the system control) and press SEND. Now all data is sent to the module and saved there. This takes approx. 1 minute! Please wait until the transfer is completed. The software signals this with all data transferred. The sent data is preserved in the module also after disconnecting and re-connecting the operating voltage. The module performs a reset when the configuration was successfully transferred to the GSM module. As soon as the green GSM LED blinks, the model logged successfully into the net (if the module could not log into the GSM net, the green LED stays lit).
The module performs a reset and dials into the GSM net as soon as the configuration was transferred to the GSM module. As soon as the green GSM LED blinks, the status of all inputs and outputs can be displayed in the software Command module. To do so, set the detected COM interface in the device manager and click on STATUS. Now a display similar to a response SMS appears, which is updated approx. every 2 seconds.
If reception is not possible, the STATUS shows NO NETWORK! and the level is zero. In this case, check the receiver quality at the location of the antenna with a mobile phone. Also note that the antenna is supposed to be attached as far away from the module as possible.
