Fantastic value for money From a company I trust, this is truly the definition of bang for your buck. Sitting on your shelf or in your hifi cabinet.

High-Quality Surround Sound Reproduction NEW High Resolution 32bit Floating Point DSP 96 kHz Processing Circuit 24 bit, 192 kHz High Resolution D/A Conversion
s Component Video Conversion High-grade Up Conversion This video transcoding technology lets you enjoy highest picture quality from all video gear connected to the AVR-1705. Since composite and S-video signals are converted up to component video signals and output to the monitor, all you need to do is connect a monitor that can display component video images. 3 Sets of Component Video Inputs The AVR-1705 is equipped with 3 sets of assignable, component video inputs and 1set of monitor outputs (all RCA terminals) High Definition Quality Video Switching The high-performance relay that is used to switch component video signals, features an extended bandwidth range up to 100 MHz. s Fully Discrete, Equal Power Six Amplifier Channels, 75 Watts Each Front 75 W + 75 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08 % THD) Center 75 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08 % THD) Surround 75 W + 75 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08 % THD) Surround Back 75 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08 % THD) For optimum Dolby Digital and DTS reproduction, the AVR-1705 features high quality, wideband audio amplification, providing 75 watts power output for each of the six main channels. The large capacity power supply includes a high current power transformer along with discrete power output devices on all six amplifier channels for high dynamic range and superb reproduction clarity.
s DENON's Basic Design for High-Quality Sound Reproduction
Twin Drive Rectifier DENON's Twin Drive Rectifier design uses two rectifying diodes in parallel to bring out the maximum potential of the large transformer. Since the rectifiers recharge the large block capacitors at low impedance, they are able to supply ample current to reproduce deep basses as well as sudden bursts of sound from percussion or other musical instruments. Large Aluminum Extruded Heatsink DENON uses large heatsink made of extruded aluminum. They have been placed in a design that ensures mostly uniform temperatures throughout the heatsink so that the output transistors for all channels can be driven under uniform conditions. This in turn ensures that all channels respond with equal performance to the demands of the audio signals. s Wide-Range Play Capability for DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD The power amp circuits of the AVR-1705 have been meticulously designed to reproduce the exceptionally high sound quality with wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. s Cinema Equalizer The sound from movie sources recorded in Dolby Digital, DTS or other formats emphasize the high-frequency range due to a theaters front speakers being placed behind the movie screen. If this sound is reproduced in the home theater without correction, the high-frequency range is too strong. The AVR-1705 features a Cinema Equalizer to correct these high-frequency components so that the sound is clearer and easier to listen to. (For Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital EX and DTS surround modes) s Personal Memory Plus, for Easy Operation The AVR-1705 includes the Personal Memory Plus function that automatically remembers the surround mode you last used for each program source, so that you do not need to select the mode again for that program. s Acclaimed Customization Feature As with all of DENONs high-grade A/V receivers, the AVR-1705 lets you adjust delay times and other parameters so that you can customize the performance of the AVR-1705 to suit your own home theater and enhance operating ease. The adjustments are easy to make via a dialog format on the fluorescent display on the front panel. These customized features are then stored, for each source input and surround mode, in Personal Memory Plus so constant readjustments are not required.

Power Transformer for High Power Driven The chassis that supports the large transformer has been designed to absorb vibration, and the transformer is housed inside a highly rigid frame to secure it more solidly to the chassis. In addition, a cushioning material has been placed around the core of the transformer to minimize interference on the signal and enable more faithful reproduction of the original sound. The AVR-1705 inherits this low-noise design from higher-end models, like the acclaimed AVR-3805.

s Multi-Function Preset Memory Remote Controller with Glo-keys The supplied system remote controller features a large selection of remote control codes to operate other components in your home theater system, including codes for selected DENON models, along with remote control codes from other manufacturers. The most frequently used buttons are laid out separately for TV, VCR and DVD, for maximum ease-of-use.
* Remote control codes cannot be used with the products of other manufacturers and some DENON products.

performance. They become more readily apparent when using the Denon as a stereo amp, or a DVD-Audio replay device. At this point, the receiver sounds peaky bright and too shiny in the treble and it can also easily descend into sounding boomy and ill-controlled in the bass. But this is not a receiver for the music buff (who would likely spend more on a stereo amp, anyway), nor is this the product for those who place specifications above performance. What this receiver offers is the ideal performance for those wanting a good cinema sound at a decent price and who dont want all those fluffy extras. If you fit that bill, the Denon AVR-1705 goes to the top of the list Alan Sircom
oming on the tail of superstar successes like the AVR-3805 and AVR-2805, Denons budget 250 AVR-1705 receiver may seem almost ordinary. It has no automated set-up facility, no DenonLink or Firewire connections and is hardly festooned with connections. Theres no onscreen display and apart from digital inputs you cant mess with reassigning or renaming inputs. Its just a good, solid, basic AV receiver at a good price. But look deeper and this basic specification belies some extremely useful features like three component video inputs. All the superfluous sockets are removed. Its unlikely that a budget Denon receiver will be used in partnership with a series of power amplifiers, so all you need is a subwoofer output. The 6 x 110W is enough to cope with most entry-level speaker systems and leaves more money for Denon to divert to good processor power. The AVR-1705 features Dolby Pro-Logic IIx and DTS 96/24 decoding (both rare in products at this price), alongside the usual raft of Dolby and DTS surround formats (including the 6.1 flavours). It also features a Personal Memory Plus function, which automatically memorises the parameters (such as surround-sound mode and channel volume) for each input. These are all practical functions, arguably more important than fancy surround modes or onscreen displays. That said, a little more functionality would be nice S-Video and digital optical connections on the front panel input, and digital audio outputs, for instance. Were
sure many would trade this for the Speaker B speaker connections, although these, too, are useful for bi-amping the front speakers. Installation is pretty much standard for AV amps and receivers without OSD or measuring microphones a series of scrolling LCD readouts across the front panel, which can adjust a limited set of functions, without the tonal corrections seen on more advanced systems. It does provide adjustment of the subwoofer in eight steps from 40Hz250Hz, though. This gives an accurate rendition of sound, especially between satellite and subwoofer systems. Overall, ergonomics are good, although the design is one in transition, owing much to the style of the latest generation of amplifiers, but without shaking off the boxy look of last years models.

WHATS GOOD

Performance; price

PERFORMANCE

Denons amplifiers are typically exciting and slightly dark sounding, with an accent on the bass performance. The AVR-1705 does nothing to disabuse us of that conclusion. The sound is dynamic and exciting, delivering powerful, well-steered sounds. Even complex soundstages are precisely manipulated around the room. The amplifier seems more powerful than its 110W power suggests, but the reason for that, and the key component of the AVR-1705 itself, is its processor. The processor stage is a notch above the rest for the money and it makes the power amp sections seem bigger and better than they really are. The limits to the sound quality are not really a function of the cinema
