DVD-Audio/Video & Super Audio CD Player

DVD-1920

DVD Audio/Video & Super Audio CD Player
The DVD-1920 is endowed with technology to unleash the full impact of DVD-Video picture quality. The DVD-1920 also uses 12-bit, 108-MHz video D/A converter to faithfully preserve the delicate low-level signals often lost during D/A conversion. With these advanced video image technologies, the DVD-1920 will reproduce with the highest resolution, DVD images on Progressive-compliant monitors and projectors. In addition to these features, the DVD-1920s HDMI port supports multi-channel DVD-Video and DVD-Audio output when connected to HDMI compliant equipment. For sound, it is high quality audio D/A conversion and Digital Bass Management that will bring out the best of not only Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio discs, but your entire CD collection as well.
s HDMI Interface with Multi Channel Audio (*1) 480P/720P/1080i Scaling s Progressive Scan featuring DCDi by Faroudja Progressive Scan technology represents a vast improvement over the interlaced scanning method used in TV broadcasts and other conventional applications, as it can process around twice as much video data to produce a sharper, noisefree picture with finer details. High-definition video images are faithfully displayed with optimum naturalness and beauty. Now, this DCDi technology that was available only in the higher-end DVD players has been included in Denon's affordable DVD-1920. The DVD-1920 has a feature of manual IP detection mode selection. Even if a DVD-Video disc was mastered with wrong progressive flag or without a flag, the user can select a mode (Auto1, Auto2, Video1, 2 or 3) to enjoy higher performance of picture quality. s DVD-Audio/Video, Super Audio CD Universal Player s 12 bit, 108 MHz High Resolution Video D/A Converters s Bass Management for HDMI Output s DVD-R/RW Playback (*2) With the increasing presence of DVD recorders, consumers are increasingly recording audio and video material onto DVD discs. These discs can be played back on the DVD-1920. s CD-R/RW (MP3 / Windows Media Audio 9 / JPEG / Kodak Picture CD) Playback (*2) The DVD-1920 supports the CD-R/RW format. It plays finalized CD-R/RW discs (single-session or multi-session) containing MP3/WMA9 audio files. It also reads still photos in the Kodak Picture CD or JPEG format taken by a digital camera. WMA (Windows Media Audio) is an audio compression format developed with Microsoft technology. It claims to offer the highest quality sound available in the industry. If WMA is used to compress a music CD on a PC, for instance, using the new Encoder 9, the quality of sound at 48 kbps is said to be equivalent to that of the original CD. s 24-bit, 192-kHz High Resolution Audio D/A Converters s Picture Zooming (x2 or x4) During play, when you press the Zoom button on the remote control, you can enlarge the picture by 2x or 4x. Use the cursor to move the enlarged viewing area up, down, to the left, or to the right.
s A Wealth of Playback Functions The DVD-1920 includes a wide variety of playback functions, such as Resume Play, for returning to the Pause position on the disc after the playback was restarted; Slow Play; Repeat Play (A-B, Chapter, Track, Disc); Random Play and Program Play. s VSS (Virtual Surround Sound) Enjoy enveloping surround sound using just one pair of speakers. s Discrete Remote Control commands for Power On/Off s Aluminum Front Panel The DVD-1920 features the front panel is made of strong, high-grade aluminum. When combined with a Denon A/V surround amp of uniform design, the matching front panels give a touch of elegance to any decor. s Color Component Video Output The DVD-1920 provides color component video (Y, CB/PB, CR/PR) output that ensure the best reproduction of fine color detail with todays high-end video monitors and large screen projectors that feature component video inputs. This connection method provides the best video quality compared to S-video and composite video connections. s 2 MB Buffer Memory This unit is equipped with a 2 MB buffer memory to ensure that both picture and sound are played without interruption when the DVD disc shifts from layer 1 to layer 2, or in the rare event of a pickup dropout. s Picture Adjustment function Brightness/Contrast/Colour/ Gamma Correction/Sharpness s Aspect Ratio Function for Correct Image Displays When you want to view video images with an aspect ratio of 4:3 on a 16:9 Progressive TV monitor, the DVD-1920's Aspect Ratio function converts the images to the correct aspect ratio so that you can enjoy high-quality Progressive output on your screen. This function also converts 16:9 images for output to 4:3 TV screens.

s Icon Based On-screen Display A simple press of the Display button on the remote controller lets you see the current operating status of the DVD-1920 within an easy-to-read display on screen. The various operations and settings are easily changed using the remote controller while monitoring the screen display. s 24 bit/96kHz PCM Digital Output Capability s PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Output s Auto Power OFF s Remote IN/OUT Terminals

enons DVD-A1XV is currently the last word in video upscaling, but not everyone can afford to spend more than two grand on a DVD player,so Denon has kindly offered the same feature on decks lower down the range. The DVD-1920 is a good-looking (available in silver or black) midrange model with a wealth of features and that all-important HDMI video output to allow video upscaling for those with suitable monitors. Its not the same system as the A1XV uses,of course.Instead,it uses a Silicon Image scaler, which can deliver a 480/576p,720p or 1080i signal, with a range of options including a black enhancer and various modes depending on the origin of the input signal. This gives the user a great level of control over the final picture quality. For those without an HDMI monitor there are component video outputs featuring Faroudja DCDi PAL progressive scan, and an RGB Scart option. Audio connections include optical and electrical digital audio outputs, alongside 5.1-channel sockets for DVD-Audio/SACD playback. File compatibility is excellent, including JPEG,WMA and MP3 files, as well as DiVX downloads. There is also the provision of a DiVX video-ondemand (VOD) code. Playback options include the de rigueur zoom (a 4x version), as well as slow-motion playback in both directions. A Direct Mode switches off all video circuitry, boosting analogue audio playback in the process, and there is the now familiar dynamic range control as well. The wealth of features and options inevitably impacts on the ease of use of this deck.It isnt complicated, but you should take your time to set things up properly.
The onscreen menu is basic, but the manual is exhaustive, detailing all of the available features in depth. The deck will output HDMI and RGB Scart images at the same time, and a small button on the front makes it easy to switch from one HDMI mode to another. This makes it possible to compare performance in different modes while watching a DVD,rather than having to stop playback and enter the menu. The only drawback is that HDMI output has to be turned off to get a signal from the component sockets.

PHILIPS DVP9000S A wonderful player, with HDMI output and Faroudja upscaling. Reviewed: Issue 299 with different TVs, so its worth experimenting when you get the 1920 out of its box and not just accepting the first thing you see. Audio-wise this is also a very impressive performer, with DVDAudio and SACD an added bonus, while movie soundtracks are the real stars but everything else has to take a back seat to that engrossing picture n David Smith

performance

Well start with an RGB connection (if you want to use a lower-quality hook-up this deck is a waste of money).Pictures are superb.Fantastic 4 at times takes on a computergenerated feel, not because it looks artificial, but because it looks near perfect.Colours are realistic and natural and there are no artefacts. A quick look at Monsters Inc confirmed these impressions, with bitingly sharp images. Switching to an HDMI feed to our Panasonic TH-37PV500 plasma display, the picture becomes slightly more detailed and filmic. However, the 480/576p setting does seem to introduce some picture noise. Skin tones are more realistic than in RGB, but faces also fizz slightly. Switching to the upscaled 720p mode, the issue is resolved. The added fizz is removed, while the skin tone accuracy and detail remains. You can check this by ramping up the contrast on your TV and (if it has them) any sharpness settings. These will reveal the flaws of the 480/576p setting and show how the 720p mode clears them up.Just remember to reset your TV afterwards! This is no doubt a case of different modes working better
