| Great DVD/CD combination, supports lots of formats! Highlights: CD-R/RW, HDCD and MP3 compatibility (with a good user interface). Superb, plain and simple. I have had this for a couple of weeks now and I am very impressed with the unit. | |

| Now my old Denon DVD player has been sold, up until the day I bought this Denon I had been playing my DVDs through my PlayStation 2. Captures a true "film-like" reproduction, sound imaging excellent. Locked-in scaling if Wide-Screen is sensed. Flawed FF to Play Remote commands. | |

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Surround Decoding: All of our DVD home theater systems include Dolby Digital and DTS decoding for 5.1-channel surround sound-encoded sources like DVDs. Each system also includes either Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Pro Logic II. The original Dolby Pro Logic decoder converts many 2-channel sources (like Dolby Surround VHS tapes and television broadcasts) into 4-channel audio. Pro Logic II converts any 2-channel source (including stereo music) into 5.1-channel audio. For more info, turn to page 100. Disc Playback: All DVD systems will play DVD-Video discs and regular audio CDs. Most will also play your home-burned CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and long-playing MP3 CDs. Some players can even handle an ultra-high-resolution, multichannel music format like SACD or DVD-Audio. Inputs & Outputs: If youre planning to hook up other audio and A/V components to your DVD system, make sure there are enough inputs and outputs (both analog and digital) to suit your needs. Check the video inputs on your TV, and be sure to get a DVD system with a matching video output. Progressive Scan: Some systems include high-quality progressivescan video. A progressive-scan picture is smoother and more filmlike than standard interlaced video, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires an HDTV or HD-ready television. For more info on progressive-scan video, turn to page 92.

DVD Players
Amazing picture, sound, versatility, and value
Nothing delivers more home entertainment bang for your buck than a DVD player. Its a killer home theater combination: a picture thats twice as sharp as standard VHS, plus powerfully precise DolbyDigital surround sound. (To make Dolby Digital happen, you dont need decoding in both your DVD player and receiver, just one or the other. A Dolby Digital receiver also decodes other sources.) There are already more than 20,000 DVD titles you can buy or rent at lots of locations.
Sony DVP-NS725P
Combination DVD players are hot!
DVD players are already among the most versatile A/V components, but manufacturers continue to add cool features and capabilities. On pg. 97 youll see a selection of combination DVD/VCRs. Besides saving space, these one-box wonders are very easy to hook up and use. Another variation on the DVD theme is the DVD/receiver combo (see pgs. 103, 107 & 108). Simply add speakers and a TV for easy home theater entertainment!
Dolby Digital and DTS: DVD-Videos official audio format is Dolby Digital (DVDs with DTS soundtracks are relatively rare). All of our players can read Dolby Digital and DTS signals off a DVD and transfer them via digital output to an A/V receiver with built-in decoding (pgs. 100-110). Some DVD players also have built-in decoding and 5.1-channel output for use with receivers with a 5.1-channel input (whether or not the receiver has built-in decoding). Progressive Scan: Instead of splitting each video frame into two sequential fields like interlaced scan, progressive scan displays the entire frame in a single sweep. So, where a standard DVD players 480i output displays 30 frames (60 fields) per second, a progressive-scan players 480p output displays 60 full frames per second. Progressive-scan images are more filmlike, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires an HDTV or HDTV-ready TV. MP3 and WMA Playback: Fans of downloaded music should look for DVD models that play MP3 and/or WMA (Windows Media Audio) files.
S-video Output Digital Outputs* Coaxial Optical Progressive-scan Video
Progressive-scan video
More and more DVD players let you select either standard interlaced-scan video or progressive-scan video. A 480-line progressive (480p) image has twice the picture information of a 480-line interlaced (480i) image see What to Look For (right). Progressive signals are available only through the DVD players component video output, and progressive signals will only display on HDTVs and HDTV-ready TVs (see pgs. 140-147).
VHS VCR built-in Where to Look
SACD and DVD-Audio: High-definition sound
As the chart below shows, DVD players also play a wide variety of audio discs. The real excitement for audiophiles is the new high-resolution music formats: AUDIO / VIDEO Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio. There are over 800 SACD titles, and about 300 for DVD-Audio. Some titles are 5.1-channel surround sound while others are high-resolution stereo, but all DVD-Audio and SACD discs sound better than regular CDs.

Dolby Pro Logic
What is a receiver and why do I need one?
Wondering what a receiver actually does? The answer: Lots of crucial stuff! To hook up and switch between audio/video source components (like DVD, CD, etc.) you need a preamplifier. To listen to AM/FM radio, you need a tuner. And to power your speakers, you need an amplifier. You can buy these items separately, but a receiver combines all these functions and more in one convenient package. Basically, your receiver is the center of your A/V system it serves as both brain and muscle. And the smarter and stronger it is, the more your system can do, and the better it will sound.

All of our home theater receivers offer 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, plus the 5-channel power you need for engrossing surround sound. Some models also offer up-and-coming 6.1 formats and 6- or 7-channel amplification, for even more enveloping home theater.
